“Martial Arts is a people building device, it teaches you how to live in a chaotic world and be happy. If we make the best of our lives by doing our best in life, we can create the life that we want. And that's really what life is about, being kind, courteous, respect, and respect for yourself. Do things that make you feel good and help people to be kind.” – Ron Van CliefMy guest this episode is Ron Van Clief, The Black Dragon. Mr. Van Clief is a multi-style Martial Arts Pioneer, a decorated Marine Corps and Vietnam Veteran, and an actor in Hollywood and Hong Kong Films. He has competed in over 900 tournaments, a 5-time world Karate/Kung Fu Champion and a 15 time All American Champion. At the age of 51 he competed in UFC 4 against at that time the Undefeated Royce Gracie. In 2023 at the age of 80 he received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt and is actively competing in BJJ Competitions. He is the 2002 Black Belt Magazine Instructor of the Year and has taught over 200,000 students over his career. His extensive experience in Martial Arts covers Goju Ryu Karate, Wing Tsun, Modern Arnis, and BJJ. This episode was all about the love of martial arts and how to stay young in the body, mind, and spirit. We dive deep into Mr. Van Clief's story, starting from his early beginnings with Grand Master Moses Powell, to his Military Service, to his Hong Kong Films, to his UFC Fight against Royce Gracie, to his current quest of earning a BJJ Black Belt. His story is one of great inspiration and mental fortitude. We discuss his bouts with Racism and PTSD, he was lynched in the 1960's and his Helicopter was shot down in Vietnam. My Key Take away is that martial arts can be used as a vehicle to heal from unimaginable traumatic experiences and live a life filled with great joy, happiness, and kindness. We will all be faced with challenges, how we face these challenges is what will determine the quality of our lives. We have to be strong enough to forgive and make the best of our lives by doing the best in our lives. Life is really about respect, for yourself and for others. The ultimate purpose of martial arts is to be kind, courteous, and help others by first helping ourselves. We also dive deep into his training experience in many different styles, and his realization that no one style has it all, and that through extensive research and study we get to the point of finding our own unique style. This is a special martial arts lifestyle episode that will inspire you to train and redefine your concept of aging and what is possible.
Join us this week on PKCC as we sit down with Sensei Jamie Seabrook. Sensei Seabrook has been training in American Kenpo for 38 years and received his 8th degree black belt under Grandmaster Larry Tatum in October 2020. Sensei Seabrook also received his black belt in Modern Arnis under Grandmaster Remy Presas (1991), and a black belt in Black Dragon Kung Fu under Master Paul Chau (1994). Jamie Seabrook is a Blue Belt Stripe 2 in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under Rener Gracie and Ryron Gracie (2018). His dojo, Seabrook Martial Arts Academy, has been in consistent operation in London, Ontario, since 1995. All classes are taught by Sensei Seabrook and unlike many schools that will promote young children to black belt, Seabrook Martial Arts Academy commits to earning one's rank through years of rigorous application and commitment. The dojo focus is on street self-defense, not sport. In addition to American Kenpo training, students are also taught effective kickboxing and ground-fighting. Outside the dojo, Sensei Seabrook holds a PhD in the Department of Sociology at Western University and is the Chair and Professor in the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences. https://www.youtube.com/@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy http://jamieseabrook.blogspot.com/
Jackie Bradbury began martial arts just shy of her 40th birthday. She was a two pack a day cigarette smoker at the time and realized she had to change her ways. She also needed to find a way to deal with a stressful job. She decided to begin martial art training with her family and the rest is history. She and her long-time husband, to whom she refers as her best friend, train together and recently opened their own school after operating a martial art program for many years. Jackie's background includes black belts and ranks in other styles, but the best fit for her is Modern Arnis. I met Jackie on social media about 8 years ago when we both began our blogs….mine, The Martial Arts Woman, and hers….The Stick Chick. The topics are different but it's fair to say both are written by enthusiastic martial art women with a message! In this podcast, Jackie shares her martial art background, training, and instructors. She fills us in on her recent surgeries and why she is able to rebound faster than most thanks to her marital art mindset and training. We also discuss what it is like to train and teach with your significant other. While we didn't have a chance to chat about it in the interview, I would be remiss to not mention that Jackie is a huge Kansas City Chiefs Fan and her other interests are “sci fi and fantasy geekery of all kinds," punk music, art and even video games. Make sure you like her links and pages to (as Jackie aptly states) "break up your Facebook stream full of memes, politics and selfies!" I think you will mostly enjoy Jackie's enthusiasm and obvious true love for martial arts in today's podcast. Hanshi Dave Kovar, the founder of Kovar Systems and Kovar's Satori Academies, started his martial arts journey in 1972 as a teenager, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Tim. He began studying Kenpo Karate, training under Hanshi Bruce Juchnik and immediately fell in love with the martial arts. As he recalls, he was immediately hooked and still remembers the immediate confidence boost he felt after learning his first self-defense technique. Just 2 years later, at the ripe old age of 15, he began teaching. His martial arts journey was just beginning, but his student mindset would stay with him for the rest of his life. He has embraced the best of what all martial arts have to offer, and shortly after starting his training, he began seeking out new styles, disciplines, and training partners to compliment his growth as a martial artist. In 1974, Kovar started Japanese Jujitsu under Bob McKean. In 1975, he began Serrada Escrima with the Angel Cabelas Organization. He earned his first black belt - his 1st degree in Kenpo Karate - in May, 1977. He would come to earn black belts in 9 other styles over his training career, while continuing to advance in his love of Kenpo. Kovar loved to spar and compete. He competed in over 200 martial arts tournaments in forms and fighting from 1974-1989. Of those, he won first place over 90 times including 4 “grand champion” sparring titles and in 1982 he was rated “California Competitor of the Year.” In 1988 he won the United States Martial Arts Championships men's heavyweight division in Reno, Nevada. But perhaps what most defines the martial arts career of Hanshi Dave Kovar is how he defines his priorities – his guiding compass through the years. As he has shared countless times with his team and those he meets, he considers himself a Martial Artist first, an Instructor second, and a Businessman third. It is through this prioritization of those different roles that has maintained his fire as a life-long student, always seeking to learn from others. Early-on, he sought out several pioneers and luminaries in the industry. He trained in Okinawan Kobudo with Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi, Serrada Escrima with George Santana, and Modern Arnis with Remy Presas. In the late 80's Dave begin training Tae Kwon Do formally under Grand Master Jhoon Rhee, the father of American Tae Kwon Do. In the early 90's Dave further branched his training to include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Cesar and Ralph Gracie, Jeet Kune Do under Burt Richardson, Tai Chi under David Dernhardt, CDT and LRT under Tom Patiere. Over the years his list of instructors has only grown, and he continues to set the example of maintaining an “empty cup” with a persistent willingness to learn. His willingness to learn has meant, of course, that he is a wealth of martial arts information, and he has – quite literally – written the book on being a martial arts instructor. He oversees the operation of his eight Kovar's Satori Academy schools, currently serving nearly 3000 students in the Sacramento area. Since he began teaching in 1978, he has had literally tens of thousands of students come through his doors, and has promoted over three thousand students to the rank of black belt and beyond. But his instructional skills extend well beyond Sacramento, CA. He is the lead instructor for the Martial Arts Industry Association and in 1992 earned “Instructor of the Year” from the U.S. Martial Arts Association. His love for teaching and developing others led him to sharing his teaching methods via seminars around the world on several continents and more recently online through The Satori Alliance, a martial arts association dedicated to raising the standard for Martial Arts Instructors through Instructor Certification and Ranking.Today, Hanshi Kovar is recognized worldwide as an innovator of best practices for ethical martial arts school operation. He believes strongly in doing business in a way that puts students and the martial arts first, in line with his guiding principles. He realized early on in his career as an instructor that to build a great team, defining and documenting his processes would be key to long-term success. And document he did! Dave Kovar has been a prolific author and has produced countless video, online, and written series on curriculum, teaching, business systems, and more. His methods have been shared through a long list of industry-organizations. He founded ProMAC, the Professional Martial Arts College to help share a deeper level of what he's learned about running a successful martial arts business with school owners around the globe. In 2010, he was honored to be named the recipient of the Martial Arts Industry Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Clearly, his impact in the industry has been wide-felt though the last four decades.

In this episode, Joe sits down with his Candian double, Randy King! They talk about a variety of topics, including Randy's early journey from martial artist to security professional, and then developing his passion for teaching self defence. Trigger warning: This conversation does go quite dark, particular in relation to the stress of self-defence instructors accurately recreating "bad guys" in training, which leads to a conversation around child abuse and pedophilia, so please keep this in mind if you do not want to listen to that segment. **** Randy King is an accomplished, impactful, internationally acclaimed mentor, public speaker, author and globe-trotting father. Having trained in the world of martial arts from the age of 10, Randy embraced traditional training having earned 2 black belts in different disciplines, one being a 4th degree, in Modern Arnis. In 2002, Randy’s perspective and confidence were shattered when he survived a stabbing, while attempting to deescalate a violent situation while he was employed at an Edmonton club as Head of Security. Randy realized that the old ways did not serve as a functional platform for self defense and he became determined to redefine the self defense industry. Over the course of a decade, Randy grew his desire for technical expertise into a hunger to demystify the psychology of violence through evidence-based research. Randy used his growing knowledge to build K.P.C. Self Defense , a highly successful local gym that he carved out of Edmonton’s inner city. K.P.C’s mandate was (and still is) to train and empower todays most vulnerable members of society. Working alongside at-risk youth, victims of abuse, and the general population Randy’s progressive and innovative methods gave people a realistic, easy to digest set of tools to help identify conflict, the communication around conflict, and if need be, employ physical techniques to escape and evade an attack. As Randy’s reputation and influence began to grow, he wanted to shift his focus from being a local influencer to a global one by creating Randy King Live. Under this new banner, Randy began aligning and partnering with other international coaches and organizations such as Safe International , Violence Dynamics , One on One Control Tactics , and others to apply his message; as well as becoming certified in a number of key courses such as Krav Maga, Rory Millers’ Conflict Communication and ‘ Understanding Violence’ from Emory University (with distinction) . Today, Randy travels the globe, helping others who look to help themselves by focusing on his philosophy of empowerment through empathy and education. Randy’s’ character has been described by clients and colleagues as insightful, practical, personable and dedicated. His passion, charisma, and experience make him an excellent choice to train the individual or organizations in conflict identification and resolution.

In May of 2001, I launched a martial arts community with a focus on respectful discussion and a generally family friendly atmosphere. The very next month, Bob Hubbard did the exact same thing. From an outward perspective, you might label us competitors and expect us to dislike each other. But we developed a friendship based upon mutual respect, which allowed us to compare notes and share knowledge around common challenges. On this episode, we discuss the benefits of being friendly with those managing “competing” communities. Plus: Community “brigading,” or coordinated attacks meant to disrupt an online community The threats that we received running communities where, more often than not, the members have been taught a form of physical combat How Bob approached selling his forum Big Quotes “If you make people choose, they won’t choose you. That’s always been my thought process. For instance, with my moderators and staff members, there’s no loyalty pledge – to borrow a phrase that’s really out there right now thanks to our president. There’s no loyalty pledge for joining my staff as a moderator.” -@patrickokeefe “I always tried to put MartialTalk on the mindset of you’ve just had a really good seminar, now you’re in the lobby of the school. You’re putting your gear away, and you’re shooting the breeze with everybody about what went on and what you’re going to do next. As opposed to some forums that had the attitude of no chit chat, just keep it on right on topic. You couldn’t deviate.” -Bob Hubbard “My own instructor got suspended [from my community] once or twice. It’s like, ‘Just because he’s the guy holding a belt rank in front of me doesn’t mean we’re going to give him a pass on behavior.'” -Bob Hubbard About Bob Hubbard Bob Hubbard is a photographer in Buffalo, New York. A native of Western New York, he speaks fluent chicken wing, beef on weck and sponge candy. He has a background is game development, programming and BBSs. Bob started moderating dial up BBSs in the late 80s and writing war games and RPG’s on the Commodore 64. In the late 90s, he transitioned to web design and launched his first web forum in 2000. A small locally-focused martial arts community on a hosted platform, it failed due in part to bad software and poor promotion. In the summer of 2001, he launched MartialTalk.com, and so began a 13 year journey in community building and forum management. Related Links This is a partial list of links from the show. An in-depth interview with Kajukenbo and Siddha Yoga practitioner Professor Barbara Bones. Hear how her profound experiences in both the outer and inner arts contributed to transformation for herself and her students. The video of this interview is available at http://youtu.be/svm4ojxyIPs Some background on Professor Barbara Bones: "My training in the martial arts began in 1971 in the art of Tae Kwon Do. I migrated to Kajukenbo (Gaylord Method) in 1972, being drawn to the freedom and creativity of the art. I am now an 8th degree in Kajukenbo. For many years I competed in tournaments and was named one of the top five female competitors by Black Belt magazine in 1975. After 1976, my focus changed to teaching. Along with Sifu Joyce Towne, I started Amazon Kung Fu in Eugene, OR. Many students reached the rank of black belt during those years including Professor Coleen Gragen, Sifu Anne Moon and Chief Instructor Aaron Ibbotson. My training in Modern Arnis was with Professor Remy Presas. His teaching inspired thousands of practitioners around the world to become greater, to practice with enthusiasm, to move with ease and power. Through this lineage, three prominent Kajukenbo schools have arisen: Hand to Hand Kajukenbo now led by Chief Instructor Sonya Richardson, Seattle Kajukenbo led by Chief Instructor Melinda Johnson and Seven Star Women's Kung Fu led by Chief Instructor Michelle McVadon. These schools have promoted more than 65 Black Belts and have made significant advances and contributions to the women's martial arts movement, the welfare and wellbeing of their respective communities and the art of Kajukenbo as a whole."
