Informa Minerva OsoEscuchar audio

Denise leads by example! Her Kenpo training began in 1994 at the Boise Kenpo Karate school. Today, she holds a 6th-degree black belt. Her 1st-degree rank was significant, as she was the first woman to be promoted to a black belt in a Kenpo organization in the state of Idaho at that time. She later took over this school, which she operated for many years until a promotion at her day job at the Veterans Health Administration required extensive travel. Denise retired from the V.A. after a 37 year long career serving mostly in upper management positions. She shares about her initially difficult transition to retirement until she began to fill her time with what she loves - martial arts, family, and even pickleball. She is active in the Kenpo Women's Symposium, where she promotes women in martial arts. We discuss extensively all the benefits of martial arts outside the physical practice, including communication and learning to overcome failure. If you're looking for a role model and someone who leads by example, you will find it in Denise. “Everyone has a gift, but not everyone seeks to find it, or has the patience to go within themselves to find it. It's passion, what are you passionate about? What part of you gives you the drive to work hard to get good at something, no matter what it is. We can be mediocre or we can be average, but what makes a person driven to become extra ordinary. You are being driven to do something; we need to find that drive. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. This episode is all about being open to exploration and the pure Joy of studying Martial Arts. My key takeaway is that everyone has a gift, but not everyone seeks to find it. We must look to discover what makes us passionate and how it drives us to become extraordinary. As students we must look to find our talents, and as teachers we must guide our students towards this discovery. The creative process of martial arts requires its practitioners to approach its study with humility and openness. Let the love of the arts drive you forward, let great gratitude and appreciation fuel your vehicle of discovery. We also dive deep into Prof. Hundon's unique training methods, and how he has maintained longevity, cultivated a student first mindset, and how he has mentored generations of martial artists. This was a phenomenal episode, with one of the true OGs of the game, join us for an extraordinary conversation about the joy of living life as a martial artist.
I'm so happy to have Charles Harriott on the show for his second appearance. Charles is not your average black belt in Jiu-Jitsu; he's a true martial arts enthusiast with a rich background. He holds black belts in Kenpo and Judo, showcasing his dedication to the martial arts world. He's been a professional breakdancer, and he is one of the featured BJJ Globetrotters coaches. One thing that sets Charles apart is his passion for leglocks. He spent years honing his knowledge and skills in this area, Charles is the creator of "Leglocks 101," an introductory leglock curriculum designed to make these techniques accessible and safe for practitioners of all levels. But that's not all; Charles has another masterclass in store for the Jiu-Jitsu community. He's here to share his expertise on the power of the elbow frame, a concept that can supercharge your sweeps and submissions. Charles has tons of experience teaching students how to improve their game with hidden and overlooked positions like the elbow frame. Today, he'll explain how this post can create defense against pressure and opportunities for reattacks. And that's not all. Charles also introduces us to his system for "Butt Judo," showcasing how the elbow and armpit frame can be used for surprising techniques like seoi nages, kata garuma, and more. So, if you're curious about leglocks, the power of the elbow frame, and want to learn from a coach who's dedicated his life to martial arts, you're in for a treat today. I'm also super happy to announce Charles Harriott will be the first featured instructor of our first ever Forever White Belt sponsored seminar! The one day intensive will be this Veterans Day Saturday, November 11 2023 at North Bay Jiu Jitsu in Novato, CA. “My goal in training is to build a student's reflexes not just memorizing a technique. Building reflexes by discarding the drills, and eventually being able to free flow, so you can react to any angle of attack, if you train that way you will never be caught off guard because you are prepared for any line of attack, it doesn't matter the trajectory of the weapon because you have already trained it, as opposed to set techniques that may not fit the situation.” – Graciela CasillasMy guest this episode is Graciela Casillas who is a former Boxing and Kickboxing World Champion. She was the first athlete to simultaneously hold both titles. She was originally a student of Taekwondo and full-contact Karate and a 3rd degree Black Belt in Kenpo and Kodenkan Jujitsu. She was trained as an instructor by legends like Guro Dan Inosanto and Grandmaster Angel Cabales and is currently a college Academic Counselor and Educator. She was awarded Black Belt Magazine's and Inside Kung-Fu Magazine's "Woman of the Year" in 1989 and inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. In 2020, she was inducted into the International Women's Boxing Hall of Fame. This episode is all about trailblazing your own path in this world. My key takeaway is that as martial artists we should all evolve and develop our own expression and style of movement. We begin our training by imitating and emulating our teachers, but we must continue the path of exploration and discover our strengths and weaknesses, and from their look for our own unique opportunities for growth. From this growth we will learn valuable lessons that will lead to the creation of a better version of ourselves. We also dive deep into teaching and training philosophies and how to discover your own truth. Graciela Casillas is an educator and true martial arts pioneer who inspired paved the way for women in combat sports. Tune in and enjoy a fantastic episode.

While typing this I wanted to say a bad pun along the lines of "Welcome to a wild episode", but thought better of it. Meanwhile, this episode really is wild - so let us know if you enjoy it. We have Sensei Jay and that's always a plus. Also, we cover so much that we even mention Kenpo and Ed Parker. Of course we did an episode on that. Here's the link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/6535051 Also, at one point we're talking about snakes, and the percentage that are poisonous. I looked up that statistic and we were pretty accurate. Only 10 - 15% of snakes world wide are poisonous to humans! (Good to know.)I'll finish with some big news - You can now support us personally with a small donation (every dollar helps - no kidding). Carrie describes her story as almost being sober and in recovery by accident. Before her successes, Carrie has experienced domestic violence, abuse, addiction, lost businesses and homes, has had chronic health problems and was a single parent with a special needs child, but somehow remained on her feet. Her journey began in martial arts. Unfortunate life experience led to her passion of teaching karate to evolve into the study of violence prevention, psychology, communication and even bodyguard training– among other related topics - in order to better prepare and empower women and children to avoid and escape the real dangers of the world. After working in the self-defense industry for over a decade, her efforts transitioned into ensuring moms have access to what they really need to know to keep them and their kids safe as well as confidently raise their children to be PREPARED to thrive in today's world. This lead to the creation of the Mama Bear PREPARED online course and most recently, the Mama Bear PREPARED Facebook group. Though she still enjoys teaching Kenpo karate, most of her time is spent in further training and learning as well as sharing information with private groups or at conferences, providing various forms of self-defense or related training, or giving personal instruction and coaching for families with specific safety related concerns.
