"Making the decision to have a child...is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." Keeping our kids safe (and ourselves sane) is one of our most important duties as parents...but the best advice for doing that is scattered across dozens of disciplines. Karate teachers, police, sociologists, and alarm companies all have their own opinions, and some of them even contradict each other. I am using this milestone episode of the Managing Violence Podcast to plant a flag. It is time we tear down this makeshift industry we have continued to patch, fix and repair over the past 70 or so years. Like a loved family home that has been renovated and added to in ad hoc fashion as it has been outgrown, sometimes the best option is to take the lessons and rebuild for the future. It's time for us to create something that is truly fit for purpose. In this podcast I talk about what I think is the future of our industry. A move towards violence prevention and management, the incorporation of best-practice risk management principles and formalising professional education for instructors. Whether you agree or disagree, please feel free to share your comments wherever you find this episode or email me at joe@joesaunders.com.au More information on my upcoming UK tour: Managing Violence 2022 UK Tour - Managing Violence Podcast Book tickets: Self Defence Global Join the conversation in the Managing Violence Tribe: Managing Violence Tribe | Facebook Support the show on Patreon: www.patreon.com/managingviolence

Ellis Amdur has worked in the field of crisis intervention since 1989. He has developed a range of training and consultation services, as well as a unique style of assessment and psychotherapy. These are based on a combination of phenomenological psychology and the underlying philosophical premises of classical Japanese martial traditions. Ellis’s professional philosophy can best be summed up in this idea: the development of an individual’s integrity and dignity is the paramount virtue. This can only occur when people live courageously, regardless of the circumstances, and take responsibility for their roles in making the changes they desire.Ellis is the author of 17 books including works on martial arts, crisis intervention, de-escalation and fiction. In this interview, we breakdown the themes in his recent book Lost Boy which you can get here: https://geni.us/5lBOIJ Pick up Ellis' fantastic book, Words of Power, here: https://geni.us/BAMP OUR***BOOK OF THE WEEK: Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss - Get it here! https://geni.us/0g9hxs4 ***Make sure you check out this episode on our website: www.violencepod.com LISTEN ON APPLE PODCASTS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/managing-violence-podcast/id1441934641?mt=2&uo=4 LISTEN ON GOOGLE PODCASTS: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy83Y2NlMDAwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Want to check out the bonus content for this episode and others? www.patreon.com/managingviolence Make sure to subscribe and leave us a review so you never miss future content.

It would be fair to say that Shaun has seen his fair share of violence and depravity throughout his life. In fact, more like many lives worth. But it has not defined the man he has become today. Despite it trying its very best.Shaun O’Gorman is a highly accomplished and recognised Retired Police Officer and former member of the Queensland Police Dog Squad, or K9 Unit. After joining the force at the tender age of 19, Shaun worked his way up to the K9 unit at just age 22. His normal ‘every day’ would consist of anything from violent domestic disturbances, armed hold-ups, vehicle pursuits or large brawls. Shaun also worked as a tactical dog handler with the Special Emergency Response Team (SWAT). Several years later he joined the Covert and Surveillance Unit working on Major and Organised Crime syndicates trafficking in narcotics and other serious criminal activities.Shaun thought he was living his dream with every night filled with excitement, violence and the opportunity to push himself to his limits and help others. He loved his career. But it did not last. After a period of time, he realised that he was unfulfilled and becoming more angry, reactive and violent. He was in weekly fist fights and was encountering more and more violent offenders. He actively sought out confrontations as he became more and more addicted to the adrenaline and the opportunity to prove he was tough and fearless as a way to try to manage the significant impact his career was having on him.Shaun left the Police when he was 31 and began a very dark time in his life. He had lost the career, his identity and felt like a failure. The violence and depravity he had seen human beings perpetrate against each other meant he lost all faith in humanity. He suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, clinical depression, drank excessively, was very angry and came extremely close to suicide many times. What followed was a 17-year journey of personal development courses, study, education, working with coaches and mentors and finding every piece of information possible on resilience, stress and leadership – with an end goal of healing himself and becoming an effective leader in his own life.He now devotes his life to helping others using the knowledge, education and experience that helped him help himself. While forging a successful corporate executive career after leaving the Police, Shaun developed and now continues to follow his passion for helping other people.Learn more about Shaun at stronglifeproject.com Make sure you check out this episode on our website: www.violencepod.com LISTEN ON APPLE PODCASTS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/managing-violence-podcast/id1441934641?mt=2&uo=4 LISTEN ON GOOGLE PODCASTS: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy83Y2NlMDAwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Thanks for listening. He's the grandfather of modern self-defence. A legendary martial artist whose journey of self-discovery and self-destruction on the doors of Coventry nightclubs was documented in the paradigm shifting memoir, Watch My Back. His breakthrough training methods such as Animal Day training changed the way self-defence was taught throughout the world in the 1990s. Since then, Geoff Thompson has written more than 45 books, stage plays, films, a musical and won a BAFTA. His martial arts journey has led to a profound spiritual journey, encompassed in his latest book, Notes From A Factory Floor. It is my profound privilege to interview one of my personal heroes, and a man who inspired so much of my early work, the incomparable Geoff Thompson.
