Today we have Jenny. She is 38 years old from Hudson, WI and she took her last drink on February 16, 2020. Sponsors for this episode include: Better Help – 10% off of your first month Recovery Elevator has a nonprofit called Café RE which is our alcohol-free community. For all of our happenings and what we offer, click on Recovery Elevator Events. [02:35] Thoughts from Paul: It doesn't really matter what word or label we attach to our relationship with alcohol. It doesn't matter what we call it; we still need to do something about it. Paul says that his own pursuits of solving the “why” behind his drinking and how his addiction took hold has been a revealing journey of self-discovery even he won't be able to pin down exactly why he crashed and burned so hard. When we relentlessly scour the past for reasons why we drink, we take our energies away from the only moment where true healing and peace reside, which is this very moment right now. Addiction does everything it can to pull us from the present moment. Ruminating on what happened, what you have tends to be fruitless. Befriend and make peace the part of you that seeks oblivion and self-destruction. An addiction path may be what our souls choose in hopes of teaching us what really matters in life. [09:03] Paul introduces Jenny: Jenny is a previous guest and was featured in Episode 417 back in 2023 after celebrating three years alcohol-free. Jenny is married and they have a seven-year-old son. She enjoys exercise, adventure and being outside. She does professional development for the construction industry. Jenny drinking when she was 11 years old with the goal of being a rebel. She says she had a goal of being a tough, naughty girl and says it let her down the road to 22 years of binging and going on benders with alcohol and drugs. In her late twenties, Jenny had a miscarriage and says that it was at that point that she knew she had a problem, and she didn't think she'd be able to stop. She and her husband had their son in 2017 and decided a life change was needed so they moved back home after living out west for a while. She was 31 years old, unemployed, had a newborn son and was deeply in debt. The move to her in-law's basement and being back in her hometown opening old wounds drove Jenny to use alcohol more and more to escape. Rock bottom came for Jenny after Super Bowl Sunday 202. She got very sick while driving and called out of work. For the next few days, she was hungover and thinking about ways to end things. A spiritual awakening and vision of an uncle that had passed away before she was born, led Jenny to get up and decide enough was enough. Jenny says the first week was hard like ripping a bandage off and bleed profusely. All aspects of her life needed to be explored. She wanted to live a life of integrity and knew she needed to do the right things for herself. She feels like every day is a victory for all of us on the journey. After a year without alcohol, her husband encouraged her to find connection and she tried AA. That group helped her define her higher power and she loves AA and the 12 steps. She finds that friendships in recovery are so much deeper. In the last few years since she was on the podcast, Jenny says not much has changed but life is more stable now. When she quit drinking, she was able to address other issues that she wasn't aware she had. She is capable of just being and seeking peace in her life. Jenny knows that relapse is a non-negotiable for her. She says she hasn't come this far to only come this far. Being able to tell the whole story about things that happen is important to her. Ever wondered if "pregnancy brain" is real science or just a convenient excuse for misplaced keys and forgotten appointments? The fascinating truth lies somewhere in between, and it's more remarkable than you might think.Pregnancy triggers measurable changes in your brain's structure, particularly in areas related to social cognition and emotional regulation. Far from being a deficit, these changes represent your brain's brilliant adaptation to prepare you for motherhood. Think of it as nature's way of helping you prioritize what really matters—your growing baby—while temporarily filing away less critical information. That feeling of mental fogginess has solid biological foundations. The hormonal tsunami of pregnancy, particularly those skyrocketing levels of progesterone and estrogen, directly influences memory and executive functioning. Combined with pregnancy-related sleep disruptions (midnight bathroom trips, anyone?), your brain faces genuine challenges. Yet these temporary cognitive shifts serve a greater purpose—they're rewiring your neural pathways to strengthen the connection with your baby. For those struggling with pregnancy brain, simple strategies can help manage the foggy moments. Writing things down (creating "outie lists" instead of keeping everything in your head), prioritizing rest, staying hydrated, and consuming brain-nourishing foods like omega-3s can all support cognitive function during this transformative time. Most importantly, embrace self-compassion and perhaps a sense of humor about those moments when you find yourself searching for sunglasses that are already on your head. The next time pregnancy brain makes you feel scattered, remember it's not a flaw—it's a feature of your amazingly adaptive brain preparing for life's most important job. Subscribe for more insights on maternal health, and share your own pregnancy brain stories with us—we'd love to hear them!

Step into the world of childbirth realities with Tend and Befriend as we unpack the truthful nuances surrounding the event of water breaking. Many of us can recall memorable moments from beloved television shows where a woman's water dramatically breaks in a public setting, igniting chaos and urgency. We provide clarity on how fluid flow may differ from the cinematic version and why identifying amniotic fluid accurately is crucial. This episode also explores significant health considerations that warrant immediate medical attention, including meconium presence and umbilical cord prolapse situations. Our aim is to demystify childbirth's complexities while providing practical advice to transition from the dramatization to every mother's reality. With expert insights and straightforward guidance, we help listeners navigate this essential part of the birthing process. Happy Satiated Saturday! Body shame is body communication. If body shame could speak, it might say, “It doesn't feel safe to be as you are. I'm trying to protect you from the pain you've already endured.”Body shame often acts as a shield, guarding against judgment and rejection. No one could be as cruel to you as you are to yourself. This can feel like a defense, ensuring that no one else's words can hurt you more than your own.Body shame can create a thick impenetrable wall around you that no one can get in but neither can you. It can lead to feeling disconnected from yourself where your body becomes a tool rather than a living being that allows you to experience sights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes. Have you ever felt invisible? Maybe you walked into a room, and no one noticed you because you didn't fit the mold. Imagine walking into a church to seek hope only to find rejection. How you treat others could be the difference between them being drawn to Jesus or driven away from him. And this is what James is concerned about in today's text in James 2:1-4. Welcome to the Daily Devo. If you are new here, it is not too late to get your James Scripture Journal. If you missed a few devotionals you can go back and listen and catch up on our study through James. There are hundreds of us studying the book of James right now, and you can join the community. Let's read the text for today: My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? — James 2:1-4 James does not pull punches here. He directly tackles a widespread issue in the church: favoritism. I think we can all imagine this situation: two people walk into the same church. One is decked out in designer threads, radiating success. The other looks like they just crawled out of bed from a hard week. What do you think? What's your judgment? Will you disregard the disheveled and favor the decked-out? Will you ignore the one to seek the benefit and approval of the other? If you do, even within your mind, James defines this as “judging with evil thoughts.” We all have been the target of favoritism and the instigator of it. However, favoritism in the church is a deadly disease to the gospel and the glory of God. When we come to a gathering of believers in "judgment mode," judging the people around us we objectify the wrong thing—ourselves. God's church was not designed to be a place to build our network or net worth. It is a place where together we focus our hearts and minds on God, glorifying and worshiping him, not ourselves. This is one of the things I appreciate about the church and the gospel. We are all sinners through and through, redeemed only by his grace, not by factors determined by the government, education, pop culture, net worth, or genetics. Why would we rely on such factors, unless we've become judges with evil thoughts? Favoritism reveals our faithlessness. Check your heart this week. Notice how you judge those within your Christian community. Who do you gravitate toward? Who do you ignore? Then ask yourself the hard and reflective question: why do I ignore one and gravitate to the other? Then, make it a point to intentionally greet or sit with someone you'd normally overlook at church. When you do this, you are glorifying God and sharing the gospel of God's great grace. The same grace he extended to you. If our favoritism reveals our faithlessness, then the gospel reveals God's boundless grace and perfect judgment. None of us can stand before him based on what we wear, what we've done, or who we know. We're all sinners in desperate need of a Savior, and the good news is this: Jesus judges perfectly and welcomes us just as we are even though he demands a change. While we often judge by appearances or selfish motives, Jesus looks beyond the surface. He sees your heart and offers grace—not because of what you bring, but because of what he has done. He lived the perfect life we couldn't, died the death we deserved, and rose again to offer us forgiveness and eternal life. So today, if you feel overlooked, unworthy, or even guilty of favoritism, know that Jesus offers a better way. His perfect judgment leads to perfect grace. You don't have to earn his favor. You can accept his gift of forgiveness and trust him to transform your life. Confess your sin, believe that he is Lord, and trust in his sacrifice for your salvation. He will judge you not by your failures, but by the righteousness he gives freely to all who believe. “Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner in need of Your grace. Thank You for dying for me and offering me forgiveness. I trust You as my Savior and submit to Your perfect judgment. Change me, and help me live for Your glory. Amen.” If you prayed this prayer write the words, "I choose Jesus" below. We want to celebrate with you and help you take the next step in your faith journey! #NoFavoritism, #GodsGrace, #FaithInAction Ask This: Who have you overlooked or judged based on appearances this week? How does favoritism reflect a lack of faith in God? What steps can you take to value others as God does? How has Jesus' perfect judgment changed the way you see yourself and others? Do This: Don't be faithless and play favorites. Befriend a brother or sister in Christ. Pray This: Lord, help me to see others as You see them, with love and grace, free of favoritism or judgment. Transform my heart to reflect Your perfect mercy and draw others to You through my actions. Amen. Play This: Great Is.

Abrar and Mikah discuss cybersecurity training and email filtering used by companies to combat this. There's a growing trend of parents gifting their kids retro tech like Walkmans, portable CD players, and MP3 players in an effort to reduce screen time. Mikah and Abrar reflect on the appeal of single-purpose devices and bonding over music. Passkeys, a new login technology aiming to replace passwords, have seen increasing adoption but face usability challenges and inconsistent implementation across sites and devices. Mikah explains how passkeys work and recommends using password managers for now, as both hosts agree passkeys aren't quite ready for mainstream adoption yet. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan and I'm joined today by Helen Fernald. Each week I interview spiritual explorers, amazing coaches, and authors from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between because I believe every season is a beautiful opportunity for transformation. In this episode of the podcast, we are chatting with Helen Fernald about 5 tangible steps someone can take to finally befriend their grief and her book LOVE, HELEN--Letters to My Mother: Creating a Loving Connection After Loss. I am delighted to introduce my guest. Helen Fernald is a grief recovery expert and author of the forthcoming book LOVE, HELEN--Letters to My Mother: Creating a Loving Connection After Loss. She specializes in teaching therapeutic letter writing. All right, Helen, thank you very much for being with us. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: 3:21 But then when I really started to think about was how my book is actually about exploring the seasons of life. And I think unlike a linear timeline, my book is about exploring the seasons of the heart. So, it's how all those emotions, the joy, the sadness, everything gets all mixed together. And I think that's the beauty of life. And that's the beauty of the seasons of life. 7:13 I've reflected on this question a lot over my life, because I've had so many sudden losses in my life of the people that I really loved and I come from a family where we didn't deal with grief, we didn't deal with emotions. And I don't think I'm the only family from the only family that did that. 7:55 The first thing that I would recommend to people is that you just acknowledge your grief. I think that's the first step, acknowledging it. And then also giving yourself permission to feel it to actually grieve. I know that that can be so hard because I realized, after a number of years of not dealing with the grief around my mother, there was a part of me that was so afraid, I would never be able to stop crying that I didn't want to start cry. 8:37 The second step is absolutely to find someone to talk with. I personally would suggest a therapist, someone who really specializes in this, it could be a therapist, a doctor, a coach, there are grief groups I know. And even in our small town, we have a grief group. It could be a pastor, I first turned to my pastor, and then he connected with me with a therapist, and it was just so extraordinarily helpful. 9:24 Step number three is to find some sort of practice, some sort of practice where we can just learn to take a breath and be still. I think that we can't really turn into our grief until we can slow down enough to acknowledge it and to be able to talk about it. 14:38 The first thing I think for writing letters, is that it needs to be something that you want to do. It shouldn't be something that you feel oh my god, I have to sit down and write a letter, I have to do all this other stuff and I've got to have a letter, it should be something that you want to do. 16:57 This was the first letter that I wrote to my mother, my mother just to give you a little timeframe my mother died in July of 1992. And I did not start writing letters until 2008. So, this was my first letter and I entitled it Letters Through the Veil because I feel like for me from a spiritual sense our loved ones are always around us, but we just simply can't see them. 23:12 I also just wanted to mention that I never knew when, when this book would end, I had no idea I just kept writing and writing and the letters all sort of ended the same way. They all ended in with perhaps the exception of this one. They all were about Mom, please stay by my side, I still need you. 31:27 I think that it's when we actually stop and explore the seasons of our life. I think that there are miraculous things that can happen. Amazing things. And, and it's okay to be vulnerable. It's okay to be honest. We are who we are. And we are all gifts to the world. We are all lights to the world. And I think that those are, I know that's a little more than what you asked. But that's what that's that would be for me the biggest takeaway. Thank you Helen for joining us and as always, thanks for listening to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast.

Change, although not effortless, is easier than you may realize, even for the most deeply ingrained patterns and habits. It starts with self-awareness and, in the case of Internal Family Systems (IFS), noticing and naming the many parts of yourself. But then what? Listen to learn how to see your many parts as allies, not enemies, and the questions you should ask your parts when they pop up in your life. The key is to let your curiosity take over so you can better understand these parts—and befriend them for your benefit. Question: First Corinthians 5:11 says, “But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.” Since Catholics are idolaters, where should a line be drawn in our social, familial, and work relationships with them? I frankly believe (and I used to be a strong Catholic) that we have become far too “chummy” with Catholics. Or am I just going overboard in my new zeal?Response: The many Roman Catholics who become Christians find it necessary for conscience' sake to leave that church very shortly thereafter, as you apparently did. Catholics thus encountered as neighbors or at work are in the same category as Mormons, Buddhists, or atheists as far as your relationship with them goes. No more with a Catholic than with an atheist should you join in a business partnership or marry or otherwise enter into any relationship that could be categorized as being “unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” Such alliances are forbidden (2 Corinthians 6:1-18)...
Jane and Sarah got to take a field trip together for this episode! They were soothed by a gorgeous sound bath created by Chuck Rosenthal while lying in the middle of a beautiful redwood grove. The following day they sat down with Chuck, founder of the Logos Method, for a soothing chat about all things nervous system and spaciousness. Chuck shares the importance of understanding and nurturing our nervous systems and the role sound healing can play in fostering a deeper connection with our intuition. She shares the differences between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and how sound can facilitate a journey towards relaxation and emotional processing. In this engaging conversation, Chuck, Jane, and Sarah explore the transformative power of silence in the healing process, the emotional releases experienced during sound baths and other somatic practices, and the role of intuition in personal growth. The trio also delves into highlighting practical tools for emotional regulation; the significance of manifestation, emphasizing the need to focus on serving others rather than just personal desires. Through their shared experiences, they highlight the profound impact of connection, energy work, and the therapeutic qualities of sound healing. Takeaways We often take our nervous system for granted, but building a relationship with our nervous system is key Sound can help us connect with our intuition. The parasympathetic nervous system allows for peace and calm. Sound baths are a journey within, not just a relaxation technique. Recognizing signs of nervous system dysregulation is crucial. Interconnectedness affects our collective consciousness and actions. Practical tools like breathwork can help regulate our emotional state. Sound baths can awaken deeper connections and insights. Silence is essential for nervous system regulation. Therapeutic sound healing differs from meditative experiences. Intuition can be enhanced through relaxation and clarity. Creating space for healing practices is crucial. Memorable Quotes from Chuck "We take our nervous system for granted." "Silence is not a familiar sound." "The place of being able to figure out how to get to the thinnest slice of now, that silence in between, is to me the magic recipe in learning to build a relationship with our intuition."
