Bobby Southworth was born in Madison, Wisconsin and was adopted when he was six weeks old. Southworth has three sisters. He grew up in Santa Cruz, California playing football and basketball, surfing and doing track. After graduating from Soquel High School, Bobby continued to Cabrillo College and yet UC Davis, playing basketball in all of them. His initial interest towards martial arts sparked after seeing Royce Gracie at UFC 1 and UFC 2. While Bobby was looking for a sport to stay fit, his friend invited him to a jiu-jitsu class in a nearby gym. Instantly hooked to the discipline, Bobby soon joined Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy before moving on to Gracie Systems which was formed after Cesar's cousin Ralph Gracie moved stateside. Subsequently, Ralph opened his own academy in Mountain View, California where Bobby continued teaching and training jiu-jitsu. Bobby grew interested to take a no holds barred bout which was disapproved by Ralph, leading to Bobby's departure from the academy. Subsequently Bobby joined American Kickboxing Academy which at the time had no proper Brazilian jiu-jitsu program, so he took the responsibility of teaching the discipline. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/toddatkinsshow/message

Bobby co-founded the American Kickboxing Academy Sunnyvale in 2008. In 2015, Southworth began coaching at UFC Gym Hollow Brook in San Antonio, Texas until it closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Southworth has a 10-6 record in Mixed Martial Arts and was an original cast member in Season 1 of the The Ultimate Fighter. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/toddatkinsshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/toddatkinsshow/support

Sean Roberts is a 2nd-degree black belt who has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2005, at the young age of 15. Sean first started training at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Placentia under black belt Brad Jackson and then black belt Eduardo Fraga. At the time Sean was competing there was very few teens his age to compete against so he was competing against adults in most tournaments and beating them, he's competed in over 200 tournaments. Sean moved to San Francisco in 2009 as a purple belt to train under Ralph Gracie. Sean started training at Ralph Gracie San Francisco under Ralph and black belt Kurt Osiander. It was during that time that Sean was selected to compete in The BJJ Kumite against 12 of the best brown belts from around the world, he came in 2nd place in the gi portion. This was shown as a reality series on YouTube, and Sean became one of the most recognized brown belts in the world. He was given his Black Belt by Ralph Gracie in March of 2013. He moved to Chino Hills to teach in September of 2013. I try to have guests on the show who I personally feel are very important for the art of Jiu Jitsu. Today's guest Sean Roberts is no exception, he is another one of those guys who has managed to avoid the hype train of BJJ personality despite winning droves of tournaments. Why we don't speak of his name more often is really a mystery to me, but I get it, he despises social media and I get the feeling that self promotion is barely on his priority list if at all. Sean was a feared tournament competitor, he is one of the quickest effective decision makers I've witnessed on the mats. It would serve many of us to go back and study his performances, unfortunately for us he recently announced his much deserved retirement from serious competition at the ripe age of 31 to focus on his coaching at his impressive Chino, CA academy Sektor. Fortunately for us, one can go to Sektor to learn from Sean or see his upcoming instructionals on BJJ Fanatics, his debut instructional will be on his invention, The Giggler sweep. Sean provides a ton of great insight on the episode, it was such an honor to have him on. Hanshi Dave Kovar, the founder of Kovar Systems and Kovar's Satori Academies, started his martial arts journey in 1972 as a teenager, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Tim. He began studying Kenpo Karate, training under Hanshi Bruce Juchnik and immediately fell in love with the martial arts. As he recalls, he was immediately hooked and still remembers the immediate confidence boost he felt after learning his first self-defense technique. Just 2 years later, at the ripe old age of 15, he began teaching. His martial arts journey was just beginning, but his student mindset would stay with him for the rest of his life. He has embraced the best of what all martial arts have to offer, and shortly after starting his training, he began seeking out new styles, disciplines, and training partners to compliment his growth as a martial artist. In 1974, Kovar started Japanese Jujitsu under Bob McKean. In 1975, he began Serrada Escrima with the Angel Cabelas Organization. He earned his first black belt - his 1st degree in Kenpo Karate - in May, 1977. He would come to earn black belts in 9 other styles over his training career, while continuing to advance in his love of Kenpo. Kovar loved to spar and compete. He competed in over 200 martial arts tournaments in forms and fighting from 1974-1989. Of those, he won first place over 90 times including 4 “grand champion” sparring titles and in 1982 he was rated “California Competitor of the Year.” In 1988 he won the United States Martial Arts Championships men's heavyweight division in Reno, Nevada. But perhaps what most defines the martial arts career of Hanshi Dave Kovar is how he defines his priorities – his guiding compass through the years. As he has shared countless times with his team and those he meets, he considers himself a Martial Artist first, an Instructor second, and a Businessman third. It is through this prioritization of those different roles that has maintained his fire as a life-long student, always seeking to learn from others. Early-on, he sought out several pioneers and luminaries in the industry. He trained in Okinawan Kobudo with Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi, Serrada Escrima with George Santana, and Modern Arnis with Remy Presas. In the late 80's Dave begin training Tae Kwon Do formally under Grand Master Jhoon Rhee, the father of American Tae Kwon Do. In the early 90's Dave further branched his training to include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Cesar and Ralph Gracie, Jeet Kune Do under Burt Richardson, Tai Chi under David Dernhardt, CDT and LRT under Tom Patiere. Over the years his list of instructors has only grown, and he continues to set the example of maintaining an “empty cup” with a persistent willingness to learn.  His willingness to learn has meant, of course, that he is a wealth of martial arts information, and he has – quite literally – written the book on being a martial arts instructor. He oversees the operation of his eight Kovar's Satori Academy schools, currently serving nearly 3000 students in the Sacramento area. Since he began teaching in 1978, he has had literally tens of thousands of students come through his doors, and has promoted over three thousand students to the rank of black belt and beyond. But his instructional skills extend well beyond Sacramento, CA. He is the lead instructor for the Martial Arts Industry Association and in 1992 earned “Instructor of the Year” from the U.S. Martial Arts Association. His love for teaching and developing others led him to sharing his teaching methods via seminars around the world on several continents and more recently online through The Satori Alliance, a martial arts association dedicated to raising the standard for Martial Arts Instructors through Instructor Certification and Ranking.Today, Hanshi Kovar is recognized worldwide as an innovator of best practices for ethical martial arts school operation. He believes strongly in doing business in a way that puts students and the martial arts first, in line with his guiding principles. He realized early on in his career as an instructor that to build a great team, defining and documenting his processes would be key to long-term success. And document he did! Dave Kovar has been a prolific author and has produced countless video, online, and written series on curriculum, teaching, business systems, and more. His methods have been shared through a long list of industry-organizations. He founded ProMAC, the Professional Martial Arts College to help share a deeper level of what he's learned about running a successful martial arts business with school owners around the globe. In 2010, he was honored to be named the recipient of the Martial Arts Industry Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Clearly, his impact in the industry has been wide-felt though the last four decades.

Mauricio "Tinguinha" Mariano  was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 11, following in his brother and friend's footsteps, with instructor Pitoco until the orange belt, as he developed into the sport and competitions he moved to  the Barra Gracie school, a bigger Academy conducted  by Jean Jaques Machado and Carlos Gracie Jr. at the time, until Jean Jaques moved to the US, and he started training full time under Master Carlos Gracie  Jr., son of the patriarch of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Carlos Gracie, under who Professor "Tinguinha” trained from the Blue to the Black belt.  Throughout his many years training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu "Tinguinha" achieved competitive success, winning many titles in all major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in Brazil and the US. He had the privilege of training with some very skilled BJJ Athletes such as Renzo Gracie,Ralph Gracie, Ryan Gracie,  Roberto "Gordo", Helio “Soneca”, Alexandre "Soca", Nino Schembri, Ricardo "Cachorrao",  among many others which helped shape and refine his own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills and technical approach to this art, culminating with the award of his Black Belt in 1996 at the age of 21, a privilege few had back at that time. His dedication into learning, perfecting and teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu evolved into his career path. He started teaching at an early age, in the purple belt and fully committed to following this path after being promoted the black belt, Mauricio is one of the pioneers in the expansion of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial art worldwide, having taught in his native Brazil, Japan and the US, contributing to the growth of this art around the world. He arrived in the United States in 2000 to continue his lifelong dream of spreading the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu art and sharing the benefits he was able to experience himself. Tinguinha has been one of my heroes since the late 90s when I moved to Brazil as a young man. I was able to visit his gym in the early 2000s in Orange County, California to train with him and it’s been a big pleasure to see his success over the years.

Caleb is THE Journeyman grappler because he travels the world showcasing his jiu jitsu, good vibes and humor. We discuss his role as the Chief Grappling Officer of the Guardian gym, a project started by Ben Kovacs & Joel Lunenfeld - a truly monumental effort showing the power of community through jiu jitsu and martial arts (We highly recommend looking them up and all the great work they do). The Guardian Gym has more than 400 students, which consists of roughly 160 FREE youth students. We talk jiu-jitsu and what it means to Caleb, we discuss his journey including training with former UFC champion Rafael Dos Anjos, we pick his brain on competing as you get older and keeping up with the demands of the teaching & training on the body. Caleb's story is remarkable and he reminds us that having the opportunity to teach, train and give back through jiu jitsu is a blessing. We talk about DJ Jackson, Shane Jamil Hill Taylor, the Judo matches, and a bunch of other grapplers from Baltimore, and Baltimore BJJ, as well as Form. Taking a look at Rob Sullivan, and Just the Tap BJJ owner David Brennan deep Kimura, and general arm nastiness that he was in during his match. The team had a great time at the event as always and cannot wait for it to come back around. After that we move into the previews section of the show taking a look at the Abu Dhabi UAEJJF Worlds Championships tons of big names, and tons of top competitors that will have to fight off in the Brazilian qualifier to even earn their spot into the world championship event. This event is always fireworks with the short match time, and penalty rules. We preview Fight to Win 110 in Cleveland Ohio featuring Jaime Canuto vs Michael Liera Jr, and an astonishing Co-Main Event in the Gi Stipe Micoc the most decorated UFC heavyweight champion vs Aaron Howard of Carlson Gracie team. Plus Max Gimenis vs Alexander Huddleston. As well as Troy Everett showing up on the card as well in Team No Sleep and Night Pigeon fashion. This event should be lots of fun as well. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reposts an interview with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990s in Amarillo, Texas. This organization, which was one of the most successful local promotions of its time, held fights under what were called shootfighting rules, with only open hand strikes allowed, but with all submissions as well as kicks and knees permitted. It was thus a mixture of catch wrestling and MMA. Steve was also a headliner in the company's most famous fight, when he took on Ralph Gracie, who had defeated him in under a minute in 1996 under no holds barred rules in Battlecade/Extreme Fighting 2 in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake near Montreal. The rematch took place August 22, 1998, as the main event of the USWF 11 show in Amarillo. This fight was my selection as the 1998 Fight of the Year in mixed discipline combat sports. A video of this fight can be seen here. This interview was originally recorded in August 2008 to mark the tenth anniversary of his classic USWF fight with Ralph Gracie. While MMA in the U.S. was facing many difficulties in 1998, the USWF, which just ran shows in Amarillo and West Texas, was drawing large crowds of upwards of 4000 fans. Explaining this, Steve Nelson pointed out, "We didn't have a TV show. All we had was, we had posters around the town. I went and did a lot of interviews. So the other fighters did their interviews, too, on the radio, and we were pulling these kind of crowds." They were so successful at the art of local promotion in the late 1990s that, "We were the top-drawing martial arts company in the United States at the time." Much has changed since then, of course, with the USWF soon peaking and closing down a few years later. Many of its top stars then focused on MMA, including the late USWF and UFC champion Evan Tanner, or coaching wrestling like Steve, Paul Jones, and others. Steve had been the head coach of the boy's and girl's wrestling teams at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo for many years, but retired from teaching and coaching in December 2013. He now works full-time as the manager of Sakura Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Amarillo. In our original lengthy interview, we spoke with Steve about the USWF and its history; his fights with Ralph Gracie; some of the fighters from the USWF who became notable in MMA; important tips for promoters, especially local promoters who need to avoid quickly losing money (which is today particularly important for those running catch wrestling and grappling shows); the accomplishments of the wrestling teams he coached; and much more.
