Aspen is a ski-resort town located 13,000 feet up the Rocky Mountains. At one point in time, it was a silver mining town but now, it is a magnet for the wealthy. Nestled among a picturesque mountain and lakes, the average home price in Aspen is around $5 million with at least 50 billionaires owning a home here. In the 1970s and 1980s, Aspen had a reputation for cocaine-fuelled excess but since then, its reputation has drastically changed and it has an extremely low crime rate. However, in 2014, a wealthy Aspen socialite was found dead in her expensive home, sparking an exhaustive investigation, the outcome of which would come as a complete shock to the entire area.SPONSORS -CONTENT BOT - Thank you to Content Bot for sponsoring this episode! Nancy Pfister, heir to Buttermilk Mountain, the world-renowned site of the Winter X Games, was Aspen royalty, its ambassador to the world. She lived among the rich and famous: she partied with Hunter S. Thompson, dated Jack Nicholson, had a joint baby shower with Goldie Hawn, and globetrotted with Angelica Houston. She was also a philanthropist, admired for her generosity. But behind the warm façade, she could be selfish, manipulative, and careless. Pfister enjoyed bragging about her wealth and celebrity connections, but those closest to her, like Kathy Carpenter, Pfister's personal assistant, drinking companion, and on one occasion lover, knew better. In 2013, after a long fall from grace, Dr. William Styler and his wife, Nancy, relocated to Aspen to reinvent themselves. They'd lived the high life before a misguided lawsuit left them near poverty, and Nancy Pfister was their answered prayer. She took them in, gave them a place to live, and allowed them to launch their new spa business. Everything seemed perfect until Pfister turned on them, making increasingly irrational demands and threatening to throw them out on the street. When Nancy was found beaten to death in her own home, the Stylers and Carpenter were all under suspicion for the gruesome murder. But in this close-knit, wealthytown set on keeping its reputation and secrets safe from the public eye, the police struggled to solve the mystery of what really happened. SHADOW ON THE MOUNTAIN: Nancy Pfister, Dr. William Styler and the Murder of Aspen's Golden Girl-Stephen and Joyce Singular
Aspen's Golden Girl was found murdered in her locked bedroom closet. The story that unfolded about her life was full of fun parties, reckless abandon and plenty of drama. The story about her death was equally bizarre and many believe the full story still isn't known. I walk through the case, the many people in it and the unique circumstances that led to this the so-called conclusion in the question of who murdered Nancy Pfister.
In February 2014, Aspen socialite Nancy Pfister was murdered in her own home—brutally bludgeoned, wrapped in a sheet, and stuffed inside a locked closet. Fewer than twelve hours after her body was found and without any evidence, police decided a married couple from Denver had killed her. Within a few days, they arrested and charged Nancy Styler, a friend of Pfister’s who’d had a falling out with her after a business deal went sour, and Dr. Trey Styler, Nancy’s disabled husband, who recently lost the family home, his medical practice, and any hope of a peaceful retirement for himself and his wife. Eleven days later, police also arrested and charged Kathy Carpenter, Pfister’s underpaid and overworked personal assistant and closest friend.Months later, Trey Styler, who was slowly losing his grip on reality as he battled with mental illness, confessed to the crime. Rampant speculation spread about whether he was involved at all—or if his confession was that of a man on his deathbed—because a medical condition appeared to have left him barely able to walk, much less carry out such a heinous crime. And, in the only interview before his death, Trey gives his account of that fateful day.New York Times bestselling author Daleen Berry covers this compelling story from the inside, following the Stylers from their fairy-tale life in Denver to the morning of their simultaneous arrest to Nancy’s release from jail and her attempts to rebuild her shattered life. Welcome to Valley Roundup, a review of the top news stories in the valley in the past week. Aspen lost another longtime local in avalanche. And this week marks the first anniversary of the murder of Aspen native Nancy Pfister. Municipal elections are coming up in Glenwood Springs and Aspen. This year, it’s all mail-in. But in Aspen, you can still vote in a traditional way at two polling places. Meanwhile, Aspen City Council is countering a citizen ballot measure on development limitations. Will it just confuse voters more? Do the citizens of Glenwood Springs deserve to vote on a new bridge? Some believe that the state’s oil and gas task force was just a political maneuver and completely ineffective. Downtown Basalt may get a new boutique hotel and condos in an effort to revitalize downtown. And do we need more lighting in Rio Grande Park? Joining me this week are Curtis Wackerle, Managing Editor of the Aspen Daily News, Randy Essex, Editor of the Glenwood Post Independent and Brent Gardner-Smith, executive director of Aspen Journalism.
