Der Abend begann gleich mit einer heiklen Frage. Nämlich mit jener nach der Offiziersschule, die Martin Pfister im Jahr 1985 absolvierte – und das offenbar nicht ganz aus freien Stücken. «Ich muss zugeben, dass ich den Korporal nicht freiwillig gemacht habe.» Inzwischen hat sich Pfister jedoch mit der Armee angefreundet. Seit gut einem Jahr ist er Verteididungsminister. Am Dienstabend sprach der Mitte-Bundesrat im Bierhübeli in Bern über die Aufrüstung der Armee in der Schweiz in einer Welt voller Konflikte.  Im Gespräch erklärt er , warum er die 10-Millionen-Initiative aus sicherheitspolitischen Gründen als gravierend bezeichnet und weshalb der Bundesrat die hohe Zustimmung in den Umfragen als Weckruf sehen sollte. Er spricht über die Partnerschaft mit den USA und die Probleme mit den Bestellungen von Kampfjets und Luftverteidigung. Und ausserdem gibt er preis, wer ihn als Sportminister zum wöchentlichen Joggen mitschleppen muss. Weil sich die Sicherheitslage verschärft, erwägt der Bundesrat, neben den F35-Kampfflugzeugen die Flotte auf 55 bis 70 moderne Jets zu erweitern. Wieviel mehr Sicherheit bietet das? Und wer soll das bezahlen? Kritische Fragen an Bundesrat Martin Pfister. Zwar will der Bundesrat vorerst nur so viele F35 kaufen, wie im Rahmen der vom Volk bewilligten 6 Milliarden Franken möglich sind – weniger als 36, weil der Preis gestiegen ist. Über die «fehlenden» F35 will er aber bereits Ende Januar entscheiden. Und mittelfristig hält das Verteidigungsdepartement sogar eine Aufstockung auf bis zu 70 moderne Kampfjets für nötig. Wie passt das zusammen? Sollen so alle Seiten zufrieden gestellt werden – von den Stimmberechtigten, die ein Kostendach von 6 Milliarden genehmigten, bis zu den Warnern, die eine stärkere Luftverteidigung fordern? Und was bedeutet das für Bundesfinanzen und Steuern? Der Verteidigungsminister nimmt Stellung.
