The internet can make people look very one dimensional. When in reality, they are far from. Ognjen Topic is a great example of that. He is a graphic designer and also a three time world champion in the competitive martial art, Muy Thai. You'll hear about Ognjen's tumultuous life journey as a Serbian born in Bosnia. Civil war forced his family to flee the country and ultimately immigrate to the United States where he fell in love with graphic design and developed a secret fighting career. You might think that fighting and design don't have much in common, and you're probably right. But one important concept they do share is mindset. So how do you prepare when your life (or serious injury) is on the line? What kind of training do you need? And how can you develop the mental fortitude it takes to survive? Not to overdramatize creative work, but putting yourself out there and taking on jobs can be scary. Maybe not get punched in the liver scary, but emotionally just as frightening. In this episode, our Ognjen shares his mindset for how to use your fear as a tool to help guide you through a scary situation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ognjen Topic is one of the best Muay Thai fighters to come out of the US. He is a 3x world champion and after a decade of professional fighting, he still competes at the highest level in Muay Thai. Born in Bosnia and raised in Serbia, at the age of 9 he and his family fled to the US right before the war broke out. He is currently in Thailand full time, as he has decided to dedicate his prime years to excelling and being the best version of himself in the sport that he loves. Ognjen and I discussed: How to persevere through pain Mind over matter How he got into Muay Thai and what attracted him to the sport His father's reluctance to allow him to be a fighter What he has learned from his losses How he became a graphic designer How much of martial arts is mental vs physical What it was like fighting Saenchai Fighting with 4oz gloves Real-life lessons martial arts teaches you And much more... Ognjen Topic My Take: Ognjen is a real testament that hard work, self-belief, and dedication will help you fulfill your dreams. He is the American Dream. He did not allow anything to stop him from pursuing the goals he set for himself - and used the passion and fire he had within him to become one of the best in Muay Thai fighters in the world. In this, the second podcast episode of 2018, I'm happy to have finally caught up with a unique fighter that I've been tracking since around Jan of 2016. Travis Clay (Sitan Gym, Arizona) is a WBC National Muay Thai Champion and is one committed and too often underestimated American Nak Muay. Travis was fresh from weighing-in for his contest with Ognjen Topic for Friday Night Fights (New York) which is slated to be the first full rules muay thai fight in America to be streamed live over the internet. It's a glorious time for Muay Thai in the states and Travis and I discussed some of his past fights in particular detail. Including his pro debut against UFC veteran Jared Papazian at Lion Fight 26; his stunning fight with Julio "The Don" Peña and his epic WBC title fight last year with Joe Gogo in San Diego for Dennis Warner's WCK Full Rules Muay Thai promotion. Travis went deep into his muay thai technique, he let us inside his head before during and after the aforementioned fights as well as discussed the nuanced differences between "Muay Thai" and "Kickboxing" and where Muay Thai may seemingly be headed in the USA over the next few years. Sit back and take in the interview and enjoy. This is also a pivotal podcast episode for Teep This as this was the very first video podcast that I ever recorded. I interviewed and cut this podcast from my office and Travis spoke to me from his hotel room in New York before turning in to rest up for his fight the very next day. Thanks for tuning in to the podcast. Please like @TeepThis on facebook, follow us on Instagram and rate and review the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher Radio and Google Play. Live well, laugh often , love much and train hard. Sawadee krap.
