It's time to fire up the mind with five fun and fascinating fast facts about imagination, plus some questions for Sarah Macdonald and Max Gambale, two creative people with interesting imaginations, and a visualisation and drawing activity for you to try yourself at home. Presented by Jenny Lynch and Matilda Sercombe. Written and produced by Jenny Lynch. Music by Purple Planet Music. Sound effects by Pixabay. Creative Science: https://www.creativescience.com.au Facebook: @creativescienceaustralia Instagram: @creative_science_australia Episode content: 00:00 Introduction and fast facts 03:43 Deep dive into aphantasia 04:30 Interview with Sarah Macdonald and Max Gambale 10:09 Visualisation and drawing activity Visualisation and drawing activity instructions: You will need: two pieces of paper, coloured pencils, and a banana. You don't have to use a banana, but you will need an object that has a familiar shape and that is not too complicated to draw. Hide the banana so you cannot look at it while you draw. In your mind's eye, picture a banana in as much detail as possible. If you have aphantasia, you might be thinking of the idea of a banana and the concept that it is yellow, or maybe a bit green, and that it has a curved shape. Draw a picture of the banana you are thinking about. Take your time to draw as much detail as possible. When you have finished your drawing, turn the paper over so you can't see the picture. Take the banana out of its hiding place, put it down in front of you, and look at it very carefully. Look at the colour and shape of the banana. Can you see any shadows on the banana and any markings on the skin? Draw a picture of the banana and look at the real banana as many times as you like to try to make your drawing as realistic as possible. When you have finished drawing the real banana, turn over the first drawing and compare your two pictures. Did you find it easier to draw a picture of a banana when you could see the real banana? Or did you find it difficult to draw all of the details? When we picture a banana in our mind, we often see a simple image of a curved yellow shape, and maybe some black spots. Looking at a real banana reveals many details that we might not imagine in our mind. To draw a realistic picture, it also takes a lot of practice and skill to make an accurate drawing of what we are observing with our eyes.
Athena Brownson, a former professional skier who competed for 14 years before becoming a top Denver realtor speaks to Doug in this episode. Athena talks about the challenges she faced after multiple surgeries and becoming chronically ill from lyme disease. She shares why the goal-setting techniques that made her an elite athlete became her lifeline through chronic illness and her approach in real estate. Doug and Athena also explore morning routines, Athena's "greatness tracker" system, and how she transforms nervous energy into excitement. Athena and Doug give actionable strategies for approaching goals, especially when facing adversity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tough coaching taught Athena consequences and accountability. Her coaches ensured there would be consequences if she wasn't following instructions or skiing to her fullest potential, teaching her resilience and showing up. Lyme disease took Athena from athletic peak to chronic pain, she was diagnosed eight and a half years ago, going from top athlete to barely getting out of bed with 10 out of 10 pain. Athena writes goals in present tense daily as part of her morning routine. She learned to write "I am healing, I am healthy, I am full of energy" even when those things weren't true, creating neural pathways in her brain. Athena created a greatness tracker system for weekly accountability, she prints out weekly action items including face to face meetings, phone calls, notes, open houses, events, plus health goals like gym visits and clean eating. Visualisation has always helped Athena achieve her goals. If she could visualise landing a trick she'd never tried in her head, she knew she could land it in real life; now she visualises sales and happy clients. Real estate requires the same mentality Athena had as an athlete, she believes you need "a little bit of psychosis" to succeed in real estate, the same type athletes have. Goal setting prevents Athena from going on disability despite chronic illnesses, most people in her position go on bed rest and disability, but if she did that she'd be so depressed it would be game over for he. Athena views manifestation as consistent goal-writing by hand, writing goals by hand tells your brain what's important and helps recognise opportunities, making manifestation practical. BEST MOMENTS "I've pretty much been setting goals since I came out of the womb, even if it was unintentional." "Half of the feat of reaching a goal is the simple act of showing up." "If I could visualise, if I could close my eyes, visualise myself landing a trick that I had never tried before, but I landed it in my head, I knew that I could land it in real life." "I reckon we could get rid of a certain amount of mental illness if we could get more people to be goal oriented." "When you're in the midst of adversity, it's actually the most important time to create goals and to create those actionable steps, because that is what is going to keep your mind engaged in a positive manner." In this powerful solo episode, Yvonne shares how to manifest your dream home, something she has personally done. She shares the seven steps she used and how to access the tools she has developed to enable you to follow them too. Whether you're searching for a new place to live for a few years, your forever home, or a holiday villa, the approach Yvonne teaches you will work. She explains why being too specific is not the answer, how to let go of the timing and trust that you will find your dream house precisely when you need it and how to recognise, then take advantage of, the right opportunity when you see it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Manifesting your dream home starts with clarity. Knowing what you want and why is your first step. Don´t get too attached to the idea of moving into a specific street or house. Being flexible invites more opportunities. Mindset matters – Stop saying “I´ll never be able to afford a home like that” – start saying “My dream home is coming”. Visualisation and writing things down are powerful. Use both techniques on a daily basis. It only takes 10 or 15 minutes. Engage all of your senses while manifesting – What do you hear, see, smell and feel in your new home? Practice gratitude for what you already have. Take positive action and find homes you want online to help you visualise. Buy small items for your new home. Use the tools Yvonne has created to help you stay mentally on track and consistent with your dream home manifestation efforts. Let go and trust the timing. Doing this is crucial. Wanting everything yesterday leads to huge disappointment when it doesn´t happen immediately, which pulls down your vibe and your ability to manifest. BEST MOMENTS “I used to say someday I’m going to live in Sandymount and now I’ve just bought a house in Sandymount.” “It's not going to serve you. If you keep telling yourself everything is so expensive, I´m never going to get on the property ladder or I'm always getting outbid.” “Stop complaining about what you have. Be grateful that you have a place to live and to sleep … this is just a stepping stone.” “I want you to say, ‘My dream home is coming.’” “You gotta let go for your life to flow.” “You have to be open to what the universe is going to bring you.” EPISODE RESOURCES Download your free property contract, blank cheque and letter to the universe templates here - https://pausepenny.com/download Buy the Pause.Penny Manifestation Pack here - https://pausepenny.com/product/the-manifestation-box/ it´s the perfect product to help you to manifest your dream home Pause.Penny Gratitude Box - https://pausepenny.com/product/the-21-day-gratitude-practice https://house.com VALUABLE RESOURCES website: pausepenny.com Instagram: @yvonnetchrakian_manifest @pause.penny LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yvonne-tchrakian-64257619/ HOST BIO Yvonne started her career as a corporate lawyer for one of Ireland's top law firms. This week I dive deep into the concept of "flow over force" when it comes to changing habits, particularly around alcohol use. I share my approach that moves away from shame-based, punitive methods and instead focuses on understanding our triggers, building self-compassion, and creating safety within ourselves. Drawing from my experience as a neurodivergent mum, I explore how traditional recovery models often fail and introduce my "third way" method of approaching behavioural change.Key Takeaways: Punitive and shame-based approaches to habit change don't work, especially for neurodivergent individuals and those with trauma Alcohol is often a coping mechanism that helps people feel safe or escape difficult emotions Neurodivergent parents, particularly mothers, face unique challenges that can lead to using alcohol as a way to find space and relief True change comes from understanding your triggers and learning to be compassionate with yourself The goal is not to "fight" against a behaviour, but to understand why you're using it and create alternative ways to meet those needs Interceptive awareness and learning to recognise and sit with emotions is crucial for sustainable change My 30-day Aussie Alcohol Experiment offers a supportive, non-judgmental approach to exploring your relationship with alcohol Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs: Join The GREAT Aussie Alcohol Experiment - LIVE June 2025 here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment Join Emma's VIP ELITE experience here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/offers/k7AXMNPG Join Emma's Be The Lighthouse membership here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/bethelighthouse Get Emma's Visualisation audio download at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/northstarvisualisation Emma's Awareness worksheets for people wanting to prepare prior to taking a break from drinking or reduce their drinking by being more mindful about what and why they drink https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/awareness-worksheets-opt-in Emma's 5 Day Alcohol Reset for people looking to take a quick reset https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/fivedayreset Join The Self-Paced Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/aae Loved this episode? Doug interviews Tyler Dunagin, an entrepreneur and CEO and founder of Turnserv LLC. Tyler shares how he founded one of America's fastest growing companies and talks about his goal setting framework, business psychology and personal growth. Tyler also reveals how he maintains laser focus through daily journaling, whiteboard visualisation and how this helps him achieve success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tyler believes in deeply understanding your "why", when you know what truly motivates you beyond surface level, you'll have extra fuel to pursue your goals with determination. Visualisation drives Tyler's success, he keeps three horizons of goals visible on whiteboards everywhere: weekly goals, yearly goals, and 'delusional' long-term visions. Daily journaling transformed Tyler's accountability, he writes at least one bullet point every day about goal progress, framing entries as if leaving a legacy of lessons for his three sons. Tyler strategically chose property for his business, targeting a market with predictability (50% of renters move yearly), growth potential (housing shortage) and opportunities for innovation. Building company culture is about psychology, not spreadsheets. Tyler focuses on making systems simple for his team, connecting them to purpose and creating transparent processes. Tyler gives managers equity in his companies, ensuring team members' interests align with company goals, so when he discusses selling the company, they are invested. Tyler credits vulnerability for his growth, he intentionally put himself in rooms where he felt inadequate and embraced being 'the dumbest person there' to accelerate learning rather than trying to appear clever. BEST MOMENTS "If I don't write it down, if I don't have a deadline, if I don't have some sort of tractional plan, it just doesn't happen. And I've learned that about myself so literally every single capacity that I do in my life is goal oriented." "Every single day I need to be able to see the goals I have. So, at my office, at my home where I'm at now, I have a simple whiteboard and in as little space as possible, I keep those things. Here's my goals for this week, here's my goals for this year, and here's my crazy, if I showed anybody this, they would think I'm delusional." "When you understand why you do things first, you gotta preface that when you understand what you're motivated about and why the, you're gonna, you're gonna have some extra fuel." "Growing a big business, you need to first look at the market that you're getting into 'cause it matters. You don't want to be getting into a profession that's so dependent on one person and it's a dying industry." "I look at the companies I have today and how quickly they have grown and all the accolades and whatnot. All of those things started in my head way before they actually came tangible and anybody can do these kind of things." ABOUT THE GUEST Tyler Dunagin, CEO and Founder of Turnserv LLC.
