To państwo, które na mapie pojawiło się dopiero w 2006 roku, ale jego historia wyrasta z rozpadu Jugosławii i napiętych relacji z Serbią – oraz z trwającego do dziś sporu o tożsamość jego obywateli.A jednocześnie to kraj wybitnie nowoczesny. W wielu obszarach – choćby praw kobiet czy osób LGBT+ – prawo jest bardziej progresywne niż w Polsce. I to napięcie między nowoczesnością a tradycją, między wspólnotowością a państwowością, czyni Czarnogórę ciekawym laboratorium współczesnej Europy.W rozmowie za Aleksandrą Wojtaszek przyglądamy się temu, co naprawdę oznacza możliwe rozszerzenie Unii. Christmas Day, 1992. Sarajevo, Bosnia. War is ranging - Serb forces surround the city. For nearly four years, its people have endured daily shelling and sniper attacks, cut off from the rest of the world in the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. More than 11,000 people were killed. 1600 of them were children. And in the main hospital, a baby is born: Lejla Damon. Her mother didn’t want anything to do with her - if she held her, she said, she would strangle her. Lejla was born of sexual violence used as a weapon of war. Her birth mother had been raped, repeatedly, by Serb soldiers in a concentration camp. And Lejla was just too closely linked to her attackers for her to bear. Lejla was adopted by a British couple, and grew up in London. She felt alone in her earliest life experiences. But in adulthood, she’s found her Bosnian identity, and become an advocate for the countless other ‘invisible’ children around the world born of sexual violence used as a weapon of war. We trace how ethnic tensions, decades of suppressed rivalries, and opportunistic leaders tore the region apart, while Europe watched on, paralysed. We explore how the Serb army launched brutal assaults across Croatia and Bosnia, committing acts of ethnic cleansing that left over 100,000 Bosnians dead, often at the hands of their own neighbours. For years, the West hesitated. But after a dramatic shift in Washington, the U.S. stepped in, arming the Croats, launching air strikes, and ultimately brokering the Dayton Accords to end the war. In this episode, we follow the story from Vukovar to Sarajevo, from Belgrade backroom deals to Clinton's White House. We explain how Croatia won the war but lost nearly a million people to emigration, how Serbia suffered the worst hyperinflation ever recorded, and how Slovenia quietly became the EU's success story, set to overtake the UK in GDP per capita within five years.
