This week on Axe of the Blood God, the PC RPG Quest continues! The gang is joined by their friend Jeff Green, who was at the epicentre of the major shift PC gaming underwent in the 2000's. On the surface, it was a grim time for PC RPGs. MMOs were encroaching on single-player adventures, consoles were eating into the PC RPG space...and what the heck was this "Steam" thing Valve refused to shut up about? Pffft. It'll never catch on. Also in this episode: We introduce our characters for next week's D&D game! Be there or be square. Starscourge Radahn was un-nerfed in Elden Ring, but the important thing is he still rides on a tiny horse. (Or is it a tricycle?) Kat has started her Persona 3 playthrough, and she has some initial thoughts. Actraiser is an RPG. End of discussion.
The '80s are alive and well in our souls -- and on Axe of the Blood God, too. This week, Nadia and Kat are joined by their good pal Jason Wilson as they continue the PC RPG Quest. It all started in the '70s, but PC RPGs got a major boost thanks to the rapid growth of the home computer market. It's a very important chapter of RPG history. After all, without Ultima, Wizardry, or SSI's Gold Box games, there'd be no Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. What a sick, sad world that would be. Also in this episode: A new Nintendo Direct brings a deluge of RPG news, and Super Mario now shares his soul with Chris Pratt. Mama Mia!
Fantasy Flight miniatures games are handing over management to Atomic Mass Games also owned by Asmodee. They had success last year with Marvel Crisis Protocol. This will include their Star Wars games, X-Wing, Armada and Legion. Fans seem to be … Continue reading →
It's a Mailbag of the Blood God this week as Kat and Nadia tackle all of your biggest questions! This week's questions include: - Why do RPG protagonists always seem to use swords? - What are the Blood God's commandments for succeeding in RPGs? - Why are airships so awesome? - Do we feel guilty over dropping an especially long RPG? - What are some of our favorite examples of customization in an RPG? - What JRPGs would we recommend to someone who grew up with PC RPGs like Baldur's Gate?
After over 77,000 Kickstarter backers contributed to Obsidian's campaign, a new title named Pillars of Eternity came to pass. We have quite a bit to say about this title that deliberately evokes the PC RPGs of a now-bygone era.
Fueled with a love of retro PC RPGs and the dream of reviving them for the current generation, four Finnish developers put everything on the line to craft Legend of Grimrock. Their creation climbed to the top of the Steam sales charts and spawned both a sequel and a successful Kickstarter for a live-action series (whatever happened to that anyway?). While it certainly has flawed AI and a repetitive environment, Legend of Grimrock deserves another look for the way it brought a dormant genre back to life. Back by popular demand, we are talking more RPGs. Planescape Torment, is widly considered to be one of the best PC RPGs of all time, Enchanted Arms could be considered a hidden gem, and Grim Dawn is a modern ARPG, worth checking out if you like Diablo, or Titan Quest. Hello, fellow lovers of the macabre and / or mouse-based action combat! Are you ready to be spooked? Are you in the mood for hyper-gory VGA-era RPG adventure games? ARE YOU? You better be, because Mikel Reparaz from Vidjagame Apocalypse joins us and he darn well finished this first person dungeon crawler for our benefit. So you'll play this creaky game from Horrorsoft and YOU'LL LIKE IT. On this special bonus episode we explore the strange worlds of this episodic RPG and ask: why are old PC RPGs so much less accessible than their console equivalents? What's up with the crazy amount of gore? Are the policemen just made that we touched them? Check out Vidjagame Apocalypse at: http://www.lasertimepodcast.com/category/videogame-apocalypse/ Help support LaserTime over at: https://www.patreon.com/lasertime You can also listen to Mikel over on Talking Critic by contributing to: https://www.patreon.com/talkingsimpsons Opening and closing music is direct from Waxworks!
In our short little introductory episode we ask: what is Square Roots? What sort of games will we be looking at? Why do some episodes have sound drops? So many questions! But this is a podcast about classic RPGs, whether they're from Japan, Europe or America. Anything over ten years old, and both console and PC RPGs are welcome. We're all about playing old games a chunk at a time and talking about them, like a book club, but for video games! Or maybe a Let's Play, but for your ears.
Don't duel with Miyamoto Musashi. That is a no-brainer. Jon and Adam talk down Rock Paper Shotgun's top 50 PC RPGs, Jon talks proper veggie techniques, and Adam's giant melon head has destroyed another pair of headphones, but at least he is having groceries delivered to his door! Also, Jon has a weird laugh in this episode. Amazon Prime Day,melon head,RPGs,PC,RPS,vegetables, amazon echo,Ouendan,Elite Beat Agents,Witcher 3,Elder Scrolls,Oblivion
Runic's Max Schaefer is the special guest this week as we examine the RPGs of GamesCom and PAX. Travis Williams joins Kat to ask Schaefer all of the burning questions you might have about Torchlight II, such as whether or not it will feature a monkey pet this time around. Scooter also drops by to talk Deus Ex, Guild Wars II and The Witcher II, proving once again that it's always a good time to talk about PC RPGs, even with TGS looming on the horizon.
