Ari Bowie is an editor and proofreader with Fox and Boar Games, now lending a hand in outreach and managing the company Discord. She has worked on a number of projects, including TrashSexy, 100 Ways, and ShadowWest. Despite being easily spooked, she has found herself working on several horror themed projects. Fox and Boar Games is the tabletop publication company run by John R Harford – writer, artist and game content developer of over 30 years. Above all of his other pursuits – creating worlds for players has been John's lifelong passion. He's been running games from an early age in 1983. He immediately began drawing on the existing worlds for emerging games like DragonQuest, Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, MERP and Gamma World to create his own scenarios and settings. His most current works leans into horror and dark fantasy in quasi-historical settings. Even when working in high fantasy or adjacent settings, John draws deeply on real world research to make his settings come alive. John is also a tenured professor who teaches (among other things) game narrative and tabletop system design at Raritan Valley Community College. His GMing style is narrative, fluid and employs immersive audio, visuals and narrative prose. Find out where Fox and Boar Games is going to be exhibiting or attending to get in on one of his games!

From the visceral excitement over Wolverine's next chapter to the subtle teasing of beloved classics like Star Fox and Gears of War, this episode dives into the biggest reveals that are shaping 2023's gaming landscape. You'll discover why Nintendo dominated with strategic drops, how the new Final Fantasy reveals are raising eyebrows, and why some franchises like Persona and Gundam are igniting passionate debates among fans and critics alike. We break down: Why Wolverine's gameplay made us feel like kids again while the voice acting left us divided. The power dynamics of NBA star Carmelo Anthony's legal case and what it reveals about justice. How the online Gundam community is struggling with new directions, and whether the reimagining of classic titles like Onimusha can reignite franchise flames. Plus, we discuss the frenzy around the return of Air Force Ones, the hype for new Dragon Quest titles, and the controversy surrounding race and representation in gaming. You'll also get insights into the industry's shady attempts at recycling content—whether it's rehashing Final Fantasy or the endless loop of Persona updates. Why do some games hit while others are left to languish? What does it mean when beloved characters like Sephiroth or Kratos get reimagined with questionable voice acting? All of this, plus commentary on the shifting landscape of gaming business models, indie support, and the culture of hype that elevates or destroys franchises overnight. This episode is perfect for die-hard fans craving detailed analysis, casual gamers wondering what all the buzz is about, or anyone who wants to understand the real stories behind the biggest gaming moments of 2023. Don't miss out on the insights that will shape your next gaming purchase—and keep you ahead of the hype cycle.

The Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary livestream has come and gone, and the reaction from fans has been... mixed. After years of silence, Square Enix finally reintroduced Dragon Quest XII, but the announcement raised lots of questions. Why was the game rebuilt from the ground up? What happened during development? Could starting over actually be the best thing that ever happened to the project? Joining me this week is Darryl from Final Fantasy Union as we discuss the Dragon Quest XII reveal, Square Enix's latest financial results, Capcom's remarkable resurgence, and the development philosophies that have separated Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy for nearly forty years. We also dive into the development history of Chrono Trigger, the legacy of Yuji Horii and Hironobu Sakaguchi, and why some classic RPGs continue to resonate with new generations of players decades after their release. The guys are back after a two-month hiatus, jumping straight into a lively session that kicked off with some beer tasting and a critique of increasingly generic AI-generated descriptions. After experimenting with new prompts to inject some humor back into the AI's output, the guys shifted gears to discuss recent gaming developments, including the new direction for Dragon Quest 12 and the expanding cinematic universe connecting Control and Alan Wake. The bulk of the conversation focused on the "hate-playing" phenomenon—the shared habit of sticking with subpar games until the credits roll, from frustrating NES platformers to disappointing PS3-era shooters. Looking ahead, the guys are already prepping for the next episode, where they'll be digging into games they believe only they have played.

Mina the Hollower is a delicious 7-layer dip of beloved video games. It looks and feels like a gothic Zelda, but its influences stretch far beyond Nintendo's action-adventure series. The Besties are joined by Jason Schreier (from Bloomberg and Triple Click) to burrow through one layer after another to uncover its many secrets. In the back half, we talk about the big news of the week: Dragon Quest 12's development reboot and the end of Destiny 2. Get the full list of games (and other stuff) discussed at www.besties.fan. What are the best RPGs for someone who has never played a JRPG before? Which games teach the foundations of the genre without overwhelming new players? And which games can genuinely turn a casual player into a lifelong fan? We break down why games like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Pokémon Yellow, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Persona 5, Golden Sun, EarthBound, Suikoden II, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy IV remain some of the most approachable and emotionally resonant entry points into the genre. Along the way, we talk about: Why turn-based combat is NOT outdated, the hidden brilliance of abstraction in classic JRPG design, why Pokémon “hacks into the childhood psyche”, how JRPGs teach players complex systems intuitively, why nostalgia is actually a good thing, and the games we'd introduce to our own children. Whether you're trying to introduce a friend, spouse, or child to JRPGs for the first time, or you're just reflecting on the games that shaped you, this was one of our favorite conversations in a long time. #JRPG #ChronoTrigger #FinalFantasy #Pokemon #Persona5 #EarthBound #Suikoden #GoldenSun #Nintendo #RetroGaming #VideoGames #ResonantArc Time Codes: 1. But what people may not know is that Dragon Quest, a Japanese game, was heavily influenced by Wizardry - Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, an American role-playing game released in 1981, and I played this, too, as a kid, which makes me old, and I'm still angry about that. So make me happy already, and pitch me an American video game, movie, book or TV show that would be massively improved by a Japanese take on it. Tell me what would be changed and why it would be better, and preferably, without being racist at all. Because that will make me REALLY angry. Best pitch wins and gets two episode points. We complete my goal to cover the first two Dragon Quest games, and here is the 2nd one. I came into this with low expectations, and was blown away. The mind sure is a funny thing—one second, you can find yourself tripping over the gradually increasing existential crisis of modern-day living in 2026, and the next, you’ll find yourself thinking about dumb ways to make peeing for a dog way more fun than it should have any right to be! On this week’s episode of Press Pause Radio, we tackle some of the news bits in gaming and our current gaming shelves in another “What’s in your console” edition of the show. Andrew and George are joined by Hugo Award-winning writer and all-around gaming journalist sweetheart, Aidan Moher, who is also ½ of one of the coolest new video game podcasts to hit the web, Fun Factor: a show that takes a retrospective look at retro game magazines that inspired them to be games writers themselves! In this episode, the cast will go over the news of the leaked internal Xbox memo that would rapidly become the “We Are Xbox” state of the union from Microsoft, and the details of the new Steam controller from a leaked review of the device, including its $99 price tag! On the games side of things, we get real weird with it as we discuss OPUS: Prism Peak, Life is Strange, Division 2, Froggy Hates Snow, Returnal, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Under the Island, Cobra, ZX Spectrum Next, Saros, Pragmata, Mouse: P.I. for Hire, Invincible VS, Quest: Brian's Journey, and so much more! Dragon Quest has had 11 mainline games, tons of spinoffs and ports galore. It's a franchise known for ushering in the foundation of the Japanese Role Playing Game, or the JRPG. Originating on the Famicom in the mid 1980s, the game saw not one but FOUR games release on Nintendo's first console. In this episode, we've decided to focus on the first three, known as the Erdrick Trilogy. With good friends and patrons of the show on board, Ryan and Cam, we were in good hands as Mike and Justin know very little. Now we're blessed by two pros joining us to share their knowledge and music choices in this classic trilogy of games. Covering not just the NES originals but other ports as well, the XVGM Radio guys get down with the charming classical wonder of Koichi Sugiyama's Dragon Quest (or Warrior if your nasty!) soundtracks. JRPG fans do NOT wanna miss this episode of XVGM Radio! We swear, it'll be a GOOd time! We'd love to hear what you thought about this game series and the tracks we've picked!
