ife has been pretty hectic for all of us, and even when we have in some time to play some games in between the bustle and hustle of day-to-day life, it’s been a little harder to find time in the day to talk about what we’ve been playing amongst ourselves… So for that, we’re really sorry about the delay with this week’s episode, but hey, we’re pretty excited to say it was a real doozy to chat it up for the show because we brought a good friend to record with us! In this episode of Bring the Pain, I go back to my roots and highlight another video game system from my childhood. The Super Nintendo came out during a legendary time for my family, friends, and myself. From betting cash to marshmallow squares, my friend and I were definitely wilding, which gave us some of the best years of our lives. A lot of those years were also spent playing video games with my neither Tommy and my mom. So, for me, video games were always a way that my friends and I always found a way to connect with. I hope you enjoy this episode and all of it's Because this episode features a lot of VGM music, I'm going to keep my comments to a minimum so that you can relax while being taken on a journey to Planet painbringer. Have a great day, everyone, and may the VGM be with you.Thank you for the support and contributions all of you make for my podcasts and articles each week. Another month, another two-part episode of Playing with Power. As we look at the December 1991 issue of NP, we couldn't help but be kinda impressed with the various Nintendo-related works that some readers had made in their spare time. We also get a look at Batman: Return of the Joker, which is an interesting game since it's a sequel to the first NES Batman video game which was based on the movie despite not being based on the sequel to the movie. Of course there's a Nester comic, and this one is alright. There's the usual suspects of Classified Information, Counselor's Corner, and a very cool poster feature the Ninja Turtles. There's also features about Actraiser for the SNES and The Addams Family for the NES. There's also an NES game based on Tiny Toons. Since that cartoon featured a boy and a girl protagonist, this is a great opportunity for NES gamers to get a female playable character… oh wait… no… Babs spends the game kidnapped. *sigh*

Hey everyone! We're revisiting two games today. One we really liked the first time we reviewed, and another that we didn't like much at all from the outset, then maybe, kinda softened on it a bit? It's complicated. Actraiser is one of the few games Chase finished for the first time while playing it for the show. Do he and Emmy still like it as much as they once did? And where will they ultimately land on Super Ghouls N Ghosts? Listen and find out.

A small online RPG proves to have a big musical heart with Wayfinder, as Syp, Steff, and Syl discover! These consummate professionals chew through this soundtrack and ask for seconds, only to be denied because they made such a mess along the way. Also, we are the only people in the world who dislike Baldur's Gate 3. Episode 232 show notes Intro (feat. "Call of the Void," "Echoes of the Fallen," and "Skylight") "Awakening" "Wayfinder" "Deepwood Holt" "In the Beacon's Light" "Kragan Highlands" "Blood in the Wood" Which one did we like best? Jukebox Picks: "Fillmore" from ActRaiser, "The Apostle Myrkul" from Baldur's Gate 3, and "Death's Door" from Death's Door Outro (feat. "Raven's Shadow") Talk to the Battle Bards on Twitter! We're kicking off the new year on Rhythm Encounter with a brand-new kind of episode: Building a soundtrack from pieces of other games. We distilled our imaginary RPG down to eight core musical moments — title, overworld, town, dungeon, battle, emotional, final boss, and ending, to be specific — and pulled a song for each from eight different RPGs. While we were all prepared to justify how eight disparate tracks made sense together, the resulting "soundtrack" was more cohesive than we expected! We hope you like this musical experiment, because we already have plans for a future sequel. Welcome, one and all, to the very first edition of The Wrap. This is an episode of SNEScapades where we look at all of the leftover games from a particular month that we didn't feel was worth one-third of an entire featured episode. Why did we decide to start doing this? Well the first two games on the docket have a lot to do with that. Actraiser 2 is the game that nearly broke Chase and Biometal was so dull that Emmy questioned whether she could continue talking more than a few minutes about every single game on the system. So congratulations Actraiser 2 and Biometal for being so awful and bland respectively that we changed the entire format of our show. We also discuss (briefly) Championship Pool, International Tennis Tour, Lamborghini American Challenge, NHL Stanley Cup, Steel Talons, Super Battleship, Super Putty, Super Tecmo Bowl, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Time Slip, Tony Meola's Sidekick Soccer, and We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story. Whew, that's a lot of games, and we still managed to keep this episode a pretty typical length. We hope you enjoy this rapid-fire format for getting through the less-interesting stuff.

We had a tiny mix-up today, so we're only reviewing two games. We're discussing Actraiser 2 and Biometal. And you'll be sure to want to hear who won in the first four preliminary match ups of the 2023 SSMP Showdown. Biometal is another horizontally scrolling shooter. But unlike other shooters on the SNES, this one is powered by Eurodance! Specifically, MIDI versions of songs by the 90's own 2 Unlimited. And we'll just let ya know right now, that Actraiser 2 does not live up to the original. Actraiser is still sitting pretty high in the A tier. So how far does the sequal fall? B-tier? C-tier? Something worse than that? You'll have to listen to find out. Thanks to everyone who voted, and check us out on social media to cast your vote for the next three rounds.
Everyone is back from their travels, Jon across the continent and Sean attending fake E3. Jon chats about ActRaiser 2 while Paul and Sean discuss the Final Fantasy XVI demo. We then spend a ton of time during the news segment going over all the livestreams from the last week and what Sean was able to play while down in LA. Top Down Perspective is entirely listener funded. If you enjoy the show, and would like access to a ton of bonus content, consider supporting it at https://www.patreon.com/topdownperspective
The evil demon Tanzra has returned! Only Eric and Nick can save the good people's souls from the seven deadly sins! Join us on this noble quest as we talk about this late-ish SNES title and sequel to a game close to both of our hearts!
PATREON PICK - ActRaiser is such an interesting mix of action-platforming and sim-like city building, neatly packed into a 16-bit Super Nintendo cartridge. Do we worship this cult classic game as holy? Or consider it a terrible leap of faith. We continue with part two of our 90s Video Game Mascot Tier List, and it is somehow dumber than the first one. This week's Axe of the Blood God is simple and clean. Friend of the show and Good Vibes Gaming host Ash Paulsen joins Kat, Nadia, and Eric to talk about Square Enix's surprise Kingdom Hearts 4 announcement. What, exactly, is going on in the game's mystifying trailer? How did Sora get doxxed? What happened to his Ronald McDonald shoes? Why did Goofy and Donald descend into hell to look for Sora instead of assuming he went to Heaven? The discourse is rich and flavorful. Also in this episode: Final Fantasy XIV 6.1 is here. Time to dust off your catboys. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes pits Not-Byleth against Byleth. Kat beats up her first shadow in her Persona 3 day-by-day playthrough The "What is an RPG' discourse reaches new, depraved depths. But "If Bloodborne counts as an RPG, so does Actraiser! Tell 'em, Hawk!" Nadia once had a Cabbage Patch doll, and that ended poorly for everyone.
This week on Axe of the Blood God, the PC RPG Quest continues! The gang is joined by their friend Jeff Green, who was at the epicentre of the major shift PC gaming underwent in the 2000's. On the surface, it was a grim time for PC RPGs. MMOs were encroaching on single-player adventures, consoles were eating into the PC RPG space...and what the heck was this "Steam" thing Valve refused to shut up about? Pffft. It'll never catch on. Also in this episode: We introduce our characters for next week's D&D game! Be there or be square. Starscourge Radahn was un-nerfed in Elden Ring, but the important thing is he still rides on a tiny horse. (Or is it a tricycle?) Kat has started her Persona 3 playthrough, and she has some initial thoughts. Actraiser is an RPG. End of discussion.
This week on the podcast, we added Actraiser to the Endless List of video games. It's a city-builder and an action platformer? What the what!? Made by the Dragon Quest people and put out in the early days of the Super Nintendo. Where did it land on the Endless List? Find out on the podcast or check out our complete rankings.
TW recaps the end of Rabi-Ribi, the YouTube-exclusive series he's been playing, and begs the developers to give those girls some pants, while Tom is playing through Dragon Quest 11 in the 2D demake mode. Actraiser, meanwhile, is the third Quintet game we've played on the podcast, and also the first for that studio! It is a bizarre combination of Castlevania platforming and city-building simulator, and it's definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Which is to say the parts are kinda bad, but the game really isn't! In this weeks totally radical episode...Nierroh and Dennys discuss the divine and wholly unique entity that is Actraiser. They then plummet from the clouds above into the depths of the underworld with Super Castlevania 4, the classic that literally oozes atmosphere. The episode then finishes off with everyone's favorite half shell heroes in the SNES port of the arcade classic, TMNT: Turtles in Time!

In this episode Greg and George look at one of the more obscure RPG's for the SNES -- Robotrek! Developed by Quintet (the company behind Actraiser) and published by Enix, this game got little attention when released due to timing and the fact it was made in Japan as a 'kids game'. We discuss if this is true or not and the game itself, how the game plays, and the original and unique ideas the game had which were picked up later by others. Any questions, comments, suggestions, etc. can be left on our Facebook page or e-mailed to the snespodcast@yahoo.com and as always thanks for your support!
Aaron from Retro Obscura again graces me with his presence as we discuss one of our all time favorite SNES games -- the classic mixed gene game Actraiser. Part action platform, part sim, this game has an amazing soundtrack, great graphics, and fun gameplay. Come listen to Aaron and myself as we discuss all of this in great detail. Feedback and comments are always welcome on the FB page or via e-mail at thesnespodcast@yahoo.com
