Can live music capture more than just sound? Join us as we unravel the mysteries behind the Owsely Stanley Foundation's newest release of Bear's Sonic Journal: John Hammond - 'You're Doin' Fine' and explore how they preserve history by creating these immersive "sonic journals." We're thrilled to welcome back Starfinder Stanley, Redbird Stanley, and Pete Bell for their sixth time on the show. Together, we journey into the world of live music recordings and the meticulous processes that bring these historical moments back to life, with techniques pioneered by Bear that capture the essence of intimate venues. This episode offers a window into the heart of music preservation. We discuss the painstaking efforts involved in transferring and mastering delicate recordings, ensuring that the soul of each performance is immortalized for future generations. The art of capturing live music is contrasted with traditional studio methods, showcasing Bear's unique approach and his use of "steel giraffes" to capture the ambient magic of live performances. Discover how these recordings offer not just sound, but a visceral experience that transports listeners directly into the atmosphere of past gigs. With insights into the creative process behind the Sonic Journals project, we explore how this endeavor is about more than just music; it's an intricate tapestry woven with stories, art, and cultural heritage. From the captivating artwork by Richard Biffle to the fascinating tales of artists like Jack Cassidy and Tom Waits, this episode celebrates the community and collaboration that make these projects extraordinary. “Boys, the rules don't make much sense. But I believe in the rules. Some of us broke them. I broke them. I can't do this. I can't win like this.” From Coach Pete Bell's mouth to our ears, this week the Bill Bradley Collective return to the movies for a discussion of William Friedkin and Ron Shelton's 1994 basketball drama, Blue Chips. Tepidly received by critics and audiences alike upon release, the Collective return a unanimous positive appraisal of the film's artistic merits: the strong performances of Nick Nolte as the aforementioned Coach Bell, Alfre Woodard, J.T. Walsh, Mary McDonnell and the host of cameos from a who's who of the early 1990's hoops scene, the soundtrack, and the portrayal of on-court basketball sequences. Nuanced cinema critique quickly gives way to an examination of Blue Chips' message, namely the question: what does this movie have to say about amateurism in college sports and the forces that continue to refuse collegiate athletes be given commensurate compensation within the very rules Pete Bell struggles to reckon with. Brought to you remotely thanks to the efforts of our esteemed producer in light of adverse weather and necessary COVID precaution, we are three fists in the face of sports and politics (and occasionally the movies), the Bill Bradley Collective.

In the annals of Indiana history, no seasons are bigger than the five commemorated with banners in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Outside of those five seasons, two probably stand taller than any others: the 1975 season and the 1993 season. Most IU fans firmly believe that were it not for injuries (Scott May's arm, Alan Henderson's knee) those two seasons would have be commemorated with banners as well. This season marks the 25th anniversary of the 1993 season, which had been Indiana's last outright Big Ten championship before the 2013 team did it 20 years later. The '93 team was filled with IU legends: Calbert Cheaney, Greg Graham, Alan Henderson, Damon Bailey, Brian Evans, and more. And, of course, it featured Bob Knight still at the peak of his coaching powers. Plus, the '93 season had unique elements like Calbert breaking the Big Ten scoring record, Nick Nolte attending games as he prepped for his role as Pete Bell in Blue Chips, the legendary story of Ivan Renko, and so much more. For those of us who grew up immersed in IU basketball at the time, it was a truly special season -- perhaps the last when IU was truly at the epicenter of the college basketball universe. For this special edition episode, we convened an esteemed and enthusiastic panel to take a trip down memory lane and discuss the '93 season, as well as, inevitability, the Final Four season of 1992 that proceeded it. -- Bill Murphy, author of numerous books about the history of IU sports, including Branch and the recently released Indiana Hoosiers Fans Bucket List, which he wrote with Terry Hutchens. This episode's guest, Pete Bell from Hops on Lots Pittsburgh (HOLP), calls it "the wall." Sure, it's a wall. But it's a wall—with hops growing up it, grown by the organization and volunteers. It was created in 2016 when the Stanton Heights Community contacted HOLP to grow hops to cover up the unsightly retaining wall along Stanton Avenue.  The hops were harvested and used to fresh hop a beer brewed by Roundabout Brewery. The result was Stanton Hops,  a truly local beer, brewed to benefit the community. To celebrate Stanton Hops, a release party was held at the brewery. Proceeds of the beer benefited the Stanton Heights Community, who also got to name the beer.  And that's awesome.  Listen how the group (Pete and his partners Joe and Phoebe) is now growing on other sites across Pittsburgh, looking for new land to grown on, challenges (not everyone loves hops or beer—think about the children!) and how you might be able to do something like this in your own city or town.
