(00:00) The guys react to Colin Cowherd’s theory that this year’s NFL Draft lacks true blue-chip talent. Beetle suggests this might be why the NFL is pushing to grow internationally. They also question whether the league’s talent pool is shrinking due to growing concerns over CTE. (9:39) The guys discuss the Chiefs wanting to be the official team for Christmas Day NFL games. There's a debate about whether they should be the ones, and if not, who else could fill that role. Beetle questions if the NFL has learned from the experience of making the Lions the Thanksgiving Day team, implying it may not have worked out as expected. (20:23) Beetle reads emails from listeners. Then the guys ask McKone if he's ready for the Boston Marathon, which is just a week away. They also take more calls discussing kids' participation in football at a young age. (32:48) Today’s Takeaways.
Larry Tentarelli and Lee Munson discuss the first round of bank earnings and Jamie Dimon's comments on the economy. Larry calls JPMorgan (JPM) the “blue chip” of banks, saying they're prepared for a bumpy economy. However, the lack of clarity and guidance is frustrating investors. Lee says “you sell at your own peril” in this market, comparing Trump's negotiating style to a Bronx landlord.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

This week, we kick off a March-long salute to the dearly departed king of American screen acting as Hackmonth begins with a classic of the inspirational sports genre, the story of a man who moves to Hicktown, Indiana and whips a bunch of farm boys into state champions. It's 1986's Hoosiers, directed by David Anspaugh and starring Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper. While the circumstances surrounding this theme month are unquestionably sad, it's still a treat to watch one of the all-time great screen presences cook in some of his most acclaimed roles, and there's no question he's outstanding in this one. The three adult leads are all terrific in fact, lifting the movie above its genre-trappings. Is the movie enormously overrated by sports-inclined boomers? Yes, definitely, but that doesn't mean it's not a cozy comfort watch at the same time. Plus: Neither Hayl or J Mo actually watched this year's Oscars, but that doesn't stop us from having opinions on them! And Justin's back with another theatrical field report, this time having made it out to the cinema to see Osgood Perkins' Vancouver-shot Stephen King adaptation The Monkey. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Hoosiers is available on MGM+ at the moment north of the border, but... I dunno, check it out from the library, that's what I did. Other works discussed in this episode include Conclave, Nickel Boys, Megalopolis, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Challengers, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Behind Enemy Lines, Hustle, Blue Chips, Coach Carter, Friday Night Lights, Glory Road, Rudy and The Way Back. We'll be back next week as Hackmonth continues with a 1995 naval thriller starring king Gene alongside Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's Crimson Tide, which is available to stream on Disney+. The week after that it's Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, and we close out the month with Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums heading in to the pod-canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
JC Shurburtt takes a look at the volume of currently rated blue chip prospects that Shane Beamer and the South Carolina football program are in on and have a realistic chance to land for the Class of 2026 per the updated 247Sports Composite (consensus of all major recruiting media outlets including On3, 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals) prospect rankings. There are two such prospects already committed and more than a dozen other realistic targets, but the Gamecocks will have to reverse a recent trend in the state of North Carolina to land some of the top players on their board. The latest Past Our Prime podcast takes us to the heartland and the beginning of the changing of the guard in college basketball. 1975 would be the last season for John Wooden and his UCLA dominance, and the Indiana Hoosiers were set to claim their spot atop the college basketball world. They would go 31-1 in '75 and follow that up in 1976 with a perfect 32-0 and the first National Championship for Bobby Knight. In 1975, the Hoosiers had 4 All Big-10 players in Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May and Steve Green... and yet on the cover of that February 3rd issue 50 years ago was none other than John Laskowski... The Super Sub. The senior guard from South Bend was the first guy off the bench for Coach Knight and a main reason for the teams success. Half a century later, he still can't believe he was the guy on the cover of SI. But Laskowski was emblematic of what his coach was preaching. A team-first attitude where you left your ego at the door and went to work doing whatever was needed to win. And they won a lot... 37 consecutive Big-10 wins in fact, still the most ever in conference play... by a large margin. Laskowski went on to play in the NBA, and then was an analyst for Hoosiers basketball for years and he says much of that is because of the legendary Knight. Much more than just a coach to Laskowski, Bobby Knight was a mentor and an impactful man for the rest of his life until his death in 2023. He negotiated Laskowski's NBA deal with the Bulls, helped him get his TV job for IU and got him into the movie Blue Chips starring Nick Nolte. Laz tells us about a side of The General we rarely saw... He tells us about an assistant on that team that went on to become the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history... and he tells us about how Notre Dame rescinded their scholarship offer to him and how devastating that was to him before it turned into a blessing of a lifetime. It's a great talk with a great guy that was the first one off the bench for Coach Knight and on the cover of SI in 50 years ago today but in the POP starting lineup. For one last time in 2024, we're closing out DePalmber: Part De by opening the vault door and welcoming another of our beloved classics into the podcast canon, this time a bleak noir thriller about a foley artist in the film industry who winds up recording proof of a political murder conspiracy while out grabbing sounds for a new low-end horror picture, and gets swept up into a dark world of intrigue where no one is safe. It's 1981's Blow Out, written and directed by Brian De Palma and starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen, Jon Lithgow, Dennis Franz, Peter Boyden, John Aquino and Deborah Everton. Like Michael Mann's Thief (released just four months earlier), it feels like a visionary director establishing countless trademark flourishes in an early outing before really hitting their stride as the decade continued. And just like Thief, that early outing may prove to be a high-water mark neither man ever cleared again. Plus: without any theatrical outing to report on to end the year, we're vibing out with hoarfrost and the music of Waxahatchee. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to this conversation, and we loved this movie so we strongly recommend you do, Blow Out is currently streaming for free on Tubi (at least in Canada) at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Abigail, The Brutalist, The Order, Blue Chips, Air, Hustle, Hoosiers, Moneyball, Glory Road, Miracle, The Way Back, The Holdovers, Knives Out, Glass Onion, Law Abiding Citizen, I Saw the TV Glow, Monkey Man, Biggest Heist Ever, Joker: Folie à Deux, A Christmas Story, Black Christmas, Baby Geniuses, The Karate Dog, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, To Grandmother's House We Go, New York Minute, Scarface, Body Double, Pulp Fiction, Gotti, The Fanatic, Dexter, Conclave, Cliffhanger, Nightcrawler, and Nope among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off 2025 with the Bernie Mac baseball comedy Mr. 3000, to celebrate J Mo crossing the 3000 films watched lifetime milestone at some point in the year that was 2024. That's as good a reason to watch it as any I suppose, and you can find Mr. 3000 streaming for free on Hoopla at the moment. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Scott Seidenberg, Steve Fezzik & Mackenzie Rivers preview Thursday Night Football between the Giants and Cowboys, talk about the NIL drama at UNLV and the mess that is the MLB Postseason races. Analysis of Key Quotes: Scott Seidenberg (0:00 - 1:47): Scott opens the discussion by previewing Thursday Night Football between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, emphasizing the betting odds. The notable quote is Scott highlighting that six-point underdogs have gone 12-1 against the spread (ATS) this season. This showcases the importance of tracking trends in NFL betting. Steve Fezzik (1:50 - 2:19): Fezzik explains his dislike for money-line betting due to the large gaps between prices (bid-ask spreads). He uses an example of a minus 230 line against a plus 195 line, highlighting the non-profitable nature of such bets for casual bettors. Mackenzie Rivers (2:52 - 3:04): Mackenzie makes an interesting point that it isn't star receiver CeeDee Lamb's fault for the Cowboys' struggles, but rather their defense allowing over 200 rushing yards per game. This emphasizes the importance of analyzing specific team deficiencies when betting on or against teams like Dallas. Steve Fezzik (4:09 - 4:24): Fezzik criticizes the fluctuating betting lines. He emphasizes that even if the Cowboys were a good bet at -4.5, a jump to -6 makes it less appealing. This ties into the overall theme of line movement and its significance in betting strategy. Scott Seidenberg (12:36 - 13:14): Scott humorously compares Matthew Sluka's situation at UNLV to the movie Blue Chips. Sluka is redshirting due to a payment dispute related to an NIL deal. The humorous quote highlights the complexities and contradictions in the NIL system and the economic aspects of college football. Player and Team Statistics: CeeDee Lamb has been a focal point of the Cowboys' offense, but Mackenzie Rivers stresses that defensive issues are what's truly holding them back, as the team has given up over 200 rushing yards per game. Daniel Jones, quarterback for the New York Giants, has a historically poor record in prime-time games, going 1-13 straight up and 5-9 ATS (7:07 - 7:31). This stat creates doubt around the Giants' chances against the Cowboys in prime-time matchups. Devin Singletary, the Bills running back, is discussed as a potential key player in Thursday's game due to the Cowboys' weak run defense. Fezzik humorously suggests considering betting on him scoring two touchdowns, adding a layer of prop bet insight. Team Insights: The discussion centers on the Cowboys' and Giants' game, with an in-depth focus on Dallas's defensive struggles and New York's potential to cover the spread. Fezzik argues that despite Dallas being a six-point favorite, New York is the smarter pick, given how poorly the Cowboys have performed recently (4:09 - 5:20). The panel also touches on other NFL teams. For instance, Scott mentions Mike McCarthy and Doug Peterson as candidates for being the first head coach fired this season (3:21 - 3:04). This shows how betting is also influenced by larger narratives around team management. Conclusion: This transcript provides insightful commentary on the upcoming NFL week, with a specific focus on the Cowboys vs. Giants game. The hosts analyze key trends in NFL betting, including team and player statistics, line movements, and prop bets. Fezzik, Seidenberg, and Rivers offer an entertaining yet informative look into both on-field performance and off-field betting strategy, making it clear that sharp bettors need to stay on top of the latest data and insights.
