From its roots as a railyard, through many changes, an association with P.T. Barnum, MURDER! & its move uptown, Madison Square Garden has always been at the forefront of entertainment and style! Early on, the guys reference an article by Bob Mayer, which you can read here! It gives more detail about the changes through the years. Ray delved into the various images of MSG, as it changed and moved, and has put together a cool blog about it. There's really more info than one episode or blog can cover, but it is a start. It also opens the door for other venues, although the boys have done an episode about the great CBGBs, which is also a Game Changer, for sure! From the original release on 9/11/2023: "Not one, but two sets of brothers formed a band in Ohio! That should have been the world's first warning that the plot to de-evolve EVERYTHING was hatching right there in Akron. In the pocket with Punk, era-wise, but markedly different from, well...everybody else, their mission required shunning norms! That was likely the case long before they donned their classic Devo yellow jumpsuits and plastic energy domes! Strange, sure! Quirky? They innovated a few of their own! Recently, finally announcing the end of their touring days, the d-volution, or de-volution, is nearly complete... Like the Stones, they never really got "Satisfaction" either. Yet, music has made their lives more awesome, and they freed young minds; both listeners, and budding musicians. We are living in the future, but we are not men, we are still Devo dammit!!! It's hard to believe 2024 is coming to an end and that The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast is now in its 5th year of broadcasting our love for rock music into the world!! 2024 was an amazing year for the show which boasts the most episodes we've ever done in a year (64) and an amazing array of album reviews, concert reviews, and extraordinary guests. As we have in the past, we've broken it down into 2 shows - Part 1 is about all the albums we've reviewed and all the authors and podcasters who came on our show. Part 2 (out next week) looks back on the live concerts & movies we discussed and the 15 artists & legends we welcomed on the show. We tend to cover albums near a major anniversary (25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, etc) with the newest celebrating its 20th (American Idiot by Green Day) and several turning 55 (Abbey Road by The Beatles, Blind Faith debut, In The Court Of The Crimson King). We may review a double diamond selling classic one week and cult favorite that maybe scratched its way to gold status. But we reflect on all of them and then make our personal Top 5 lists of the albums we reviewed that we liked best. We also welcomed authors who've written some amazing books like Mark Blake and Mick Wall to share some stories along with podcasters who share our passion and knowledge for rock music. Our monthly First Concert Memories series gives people the chance to share special nights in their rock n roll journey that made them fans! Born of psychedelia (when "it" was still good) and the S.F. scene of the mid-1960s, the Imbalanced Boys dig into the formation and early ways of this R&RHOF (class of 1996) band this week! 2400 Fulton Street, their mansion's address, was Golden Gate Park-adjacent, and a short walk to the Grateful Dead's house "in the Haight." In the early daze of the scene, things were "still coming together." Later, Marty, Grace, Jorma, Paul, Jack & Spencer would rock the universe! In that atmosphere Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane formed and took flight. Prime flying time, festival glory, plus years of commercial success can't prevent major changes, as the story unfolds. This is the original copy for the previous release of this episode on 12/26/21: "This episode is the story of a lost live album by the great Johnny & June Carter Cash, recorded shortly after the legendary Folsom Prison Live album. The contrast in energy of these two nights is stark, and part of the discussion. The mood the night of the show was appropriately laid back for San Francisco. The Carousel Ballroom, which would shortly become the Fillmore (West), hosted the April 24, 1968 concert, and tape was rolling, as was the case when Owlsley Stanley was at the sound board. He recorded most shows that he mixed, which gives purpose to his foundation's modern mission of preservation. This Carter-Cash album could do a lot of good in that area. Markus and Ray talk with William "Hawk" Semins and Pete Bell of The Owlsley Stanley Foundation, about this show, and their ongoing efforts to preserve this audio legacy! Then they're joined by John Carter Cash, legendary producer and artist, and son of John and June! He gives the family legacy's view of this show, among other things! Originally released as episode #138 on 10/7/21, now tweaked and remastered for Summer Vacay 2024! "Coming together out of the fertile environment of Adelphi University and its college radio station, Public Enemy burst forth with a wall of power, a collective that changed Hip-Hop and helped forge an unholy alliance with Metal! Their song, "Fight The Power" played an actual role in Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing," which put the group on the radar of a much wider audience. In this week's adventure, we explore the band's roots as a loosely associated group of artists who converge via WBAU, coalescing as The Bomb Squad, with unreal "solid work" being set off. It's a rambling, veering off-kilter look at PE, who have been part of both Imbalanced Brothers' musical life! Hats off to the samplers, the DJs scratchin' it out, the MCs sayin' it! Before our July Summer vacation, a really great talk with author Daniel Rachel (Like Some Forgotten Dream, Don't Look Back In Anger, Walls Come Tumbling Down) to discuss his latest book, Too Much Too Young: The 2-Tone Records Story! The music of Ska was the next big thing in London, and in Coventry, where many of the bands percolated in a vacuum. They were less effected by outside trends, and created their own thing. It's about the way Ska music, back to the early artists of Jamaica, makes you feel! The way it moves you! Daniel and the guys delve into that and what fueled the black & white-checkered trend of the Brits who adopted this music as their own! The Americans got into the act, too, as both Ray and Markus indicate in this episode. If you don't know much about Ska, dig in and start to learn right here! All You Need Is Love, his new book, builds a POV telling of the tale, introducing new information and perspective. Gaines also shares many previously unknown details about his experiences interviewing Fabs. He also tells his own story in the midst of it (next book, Steve?). All are reasons for reading this book.
