Two new Woolworths stores have opened in the South Island, but you can't get the weekly shop done there. The educational facilities in Dunedin and Invercargill are giving young people with disabilities training for jobs in a supermarket environment, creating 'launchpads' for future employment. Front-Line Training chief operations officer Nadia Steedman says this will allow people to work in a space that suits their individual needs. "With that, we have a direct connection with the local Woolworths stores, where work experience will eventually be available - as well as putting them in the limelight, with the potential for them to become employed." Drawing on her background in mathematics and statistics, Meghan explains why the most effective interventions are built with the whole person in mind and steers by the communities themselves. Beth and Meghan dig into the practical realities of whole-population care, exploring how broader challenges like housing and environmental factors shape individual outcomes. Tune in to discover how we can bridge the divide between “data rich” and “data poor” populations, putting actionable insights directly into the hands of those designing the future of healthcare. Less than 2% of Americans can put plastic film in their curbside recycling bin, according to The Recycling Partnership. Meanwhile, the country generates millions of pounds of bags, pallet wrap, bubble mailers, and dry cleaner sleeves every year that machinery at materials recovery facilities is designed to reject. The plastic film problem has been the recycling industry's white whale for three decades — too contaminated for most processors, too light for most economics. But more than 30 years ago, Trex Company, then a small operation in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, decided to build its supply chain around exactly this material. By the end of 2024, Trex had upcycled more than 5.5 billion pounds of waste plastic film into composite decking and had become one of the largest plastic film recyclers in North America. On this episode of Sustainability In Your Ear, Amy Fernandez, Chief Legal and Sustainability Officer, and Zachary Lauer, Chief Operations Officer at Trex, discuss how the company designs an entire manufacturing process around feedstock variability, why Trex indexed its 2024 sustainability report to IFRS standards before any US regulator required it, and what has to happen for old Trex decks to become new Trex decks. Most manufacturers spend their engineering effort narrowing input tolerances. Trex went the other direction. Zach described thousands of recipes the production lines can run through, swapping between cleaner stretch film one day and heavily contaminated industrial trimmings the next. Artificial intelligence reads each feedstock stream in real time and adjusts extrusion temperatures and line speeds to keep the finished board within specification. In 2024, the company sourced over 1 billion pounds of reclaimed PE film and wood scrap, including 377 million pounds of waste plastic, through a national collection network of more than 10,000 retail drop-off locations and hundreds of school and community partners enrolled in its NexTrex program. The company is also preparing for the first generation of Trex decks, which are reaching replacement age, and its manufacturing lines can reabsorb the company's own boards. The recycling bottleneck is contractors pulling up old decks who don't want to sort screws from boards. Underneath all of it is a point worth lingering on: Trex's poly feedstock isn't priced off a barrel of crude, which means in a period of reshoring, tariff volatility, and oil-market disruption, recycled supply chains are structurally more stable than virgin ones, not less.To find out more about Trex and its sustainability work, visit trex.com. The 2024 Sustainability Report is available on the company's investor relations site.

Experts now estimate the country needs to build 10 million homes to meet demand—a near-impossible feat using traditional methods. Enter Lagom Development, a vertically integrated housing platform that combines innovative construction techniques with sustainable practices to make homeownership attainable for more people. In this interview, Lagom Development's founder and CEO, Skip Hulsey, discussed the company's approach to tackling this massive problem. Skip's solution involves integrating manufacturing, construction, and sales under one roof, leveraging Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to build efficiently, affordably, and sustainably. “Our target is four hours from slab to a dried-in home,” Skip explained, emphasizing the remarkable speed at which they can build. “Instead of a weeks-long process, we're delivering a fully insulated, weather-ready shell in an afternoon.”Lagom Development's homes aren't just fast to construct—they're energy efficient, too. Skip noted that owners see substantial savings on utilities: “By our calculations, it's roughly equivalent to an additional mortgage payment every year in utility savings.” This groundbreaking approach reduces waste, shortens labor time, and cuts long-term energy costs, making it a win for both homeowners and the planet. To scale its vision nationally, Lagom Development is raising funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. This democratized approach to fundraising aligns with its mission to make homeownership accessible. “Allowing retail investors to come along for the ride,” Skip said, “helps us extend the same end goal of accessibility to more families.”Skip's journey to founding Lagom Development reflects his lifelong commitment to housing. He began framing homes as a teenager, worked in manufacturing and real estate, and later earned a master's degree in real estate development. COVID-19 served as a key turning point for him. “I saw that teachers, first responders, and service industry folks could no longer afford starter homes,” he said. Determined to find a solution, he created Lagom Development to reimagine what's possible for housing. For anyone interested in supporting or learning more about this impactful venture, visit Lagom Development's crowdfunding page or check out its innovative SIP technology. Skip's team is proving that with the right tools, partnerships, and approach, solving the housing crisis isn't just possible—it's within reach.tl;dr:Skip Hulsey introduced Lagom Development, a purpose-driven company addressing the U.S. housing crisis with scalable solutions.Lagom Development uses Structural Insulated Panels to build affordable, energy-efficient homes in just four hours. The company is raising funds through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder.Skip shared his personal journey in housing and his decision to pursue innovative solutions post-COVID.Skip's superpower—team building—has been critical to assembling a high-performance team at Lagom Development. How to Develop Team Building As a SuperpowerSkip's superpower is team building. In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, Skip attributed the success of Lagom Development to the strength of its team. He described his superpower as “getting others on board and believing in being able to achieve a shared mission.” He emphasized the importance of attracting talented individuals who share a common purpose, explaining, “I think it's always been and will continue to be about getting the right people on the bus.”Skip shared how he convinced a seasoned operations expert with over four decades of experience—including a career at Accenture—to join Lagom Development as its Chief Operations Officer. This hire was critical to Lagom Development's ability to scale its operations. As Skip explained, building a team depends on “selling the narrative” and fully believing in the mission. He noted that people are drawn to being part of projects that are bigger than themselves, especially when they sense real optimism and purpose.Tips for Developing Team-Building Skills:Burn the Boats: Commit fully to your mission and project to inspire others to join you.Stay Curious: Ask people about their experiences and engage in meaningful conversations to build connections.Evangelize the Vision: Share your belief in the mission and paint a compelling picture of what's possible.Work Hard: Lead by example to demonstrate your commitment and inspire your team.By following Skip's example and advice, you can make team building a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. In this episode, I'm joined by Matt Clarke, President and Chief Operations Officer of Churchill Mortgage Corporation, who shares a powerful and practical example of what faith-led leadership can look like in the workplace. What began as a simple practice — writing and sending daily devotionals to his team — has grown into something that has shaped culture, encouraged employees, and impacted people far beyond the organisation. This conversation will help you see that integrating faith into leadership doesn't have to be complicated or forced. Sometimes, it's the small, consistent acts of obedience that create the greatest impact. In This Episode We explore: • how Matt began writing daily devotionals for his team • why consistency matters more than perfection in faith-led leadership • how personal stories can connect deeply with people in the workplace • the impact of bringing Scripture into everyday leadership moments • how devotionals have shaped the culture at Churchill Mortgage • what it looks like to lead with faith without being performative or pushy • how simple spiritual practices can influence how people show up at work and at home A Key Leadership Truth: You don't need a platform to influence people — you need consistency. Small, faithful leadership habits practiced daily can shape culture in ways you may not immediately see. About Matt Clarke Matt Clarke is the President and Chief Operations Officer of Churchill Mortgage Corporation, a nationally recognised mortgage company based in Brentwood, Tennessee. With over 25 years of experience in the financial and mortgage industry, Matt has played a key role in transforming Churchill from a mortgage broker into a mortgage banking institution, while overseeing its day-to-day operations. Beyond his operational leadership, Matt is deeply passionate about integrating faith into the workplace. Through his daily devotionals — drawn from personal life experiences and anchored in Scripture — he has created a culture of encouragement, reflection, and spiritual growth that extends across teams and customers nationwide. They accomplish this through Training, Financial Coaching, Mentorship, Advocacy, Partnerships and Collaborations. The belief that low-wage jobs are primarily filled by teenagers and young adults has long prevailed, but of the quarter of all workers in the United States who make less than $35,000 a year, half are between the ages of 35-64 years old. Joining Wilné this morning is Alexander Haw, Chief Operations Officer at Polyco — a non-profit organisation working to grow plastic recycling and collection across South Africa and ultimately end plastic waste in our environment.

Beth Campbell is an award-winning professor of management and leadership development at the University of Minnesota. Her main research projects focus on the consequences high performers spark for themselves and how high performers affect their peers and their teams. She has published in leading academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Applied Psychology, while also serving as Chief Operations Officer of the OB Division of the Academy of Management. She also serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Applied Psychology, and as Associate Editor at Personnel Psychology. Beth holds a Ph.D. in management from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan. In this episode we discuss the following: Hiring a star performer seems like an easy win, but Beth's research shows that hiring stars can trigger status conflicts and envy. Research suggests that "star power" hits diminishing returns once a team is composed of more than 20% high performers, as too many "hot shots" can lead to ego clashes rather than collaboration. To avoid these pitfalls, leaders can look for stars who possess humility and high emotional intelligence, as they're more likely to share credit and lift those around them. Success isn't just about chasing the best talent, but being thoughtful about the character traits of stars and the system they'll be working in.

Vanessa Lemarié, Chief Operations Officer at myTomorrows, which is a platform for connecting patients, physicians, and clinical trial sponsors using a Trial Search AI tool designed to improve the accuracy of matching patients with suitable trials. The technology aims to speed up trial recruitment, increase diversity by reaching underserved populations, and ultimately shorten the drug development timeline. There is a particular focus on patients with no treatment options or who have not responded to current therapies. Vanessa explains, "We are all about patients. First and foremost, we want to help patients know their options. Patients who turn to us either have no treatment options for their conditions or have exhausted the treatment options. They are looking for alternatives and insights into whether we can help them find, for example, a clinical trial. Physicians who treat those patients turn to us." "And last but not least, we work with biopharma companies that plan and conduct clinical trials and that sponsor expanded access programs. And those are our clients. So we connect all of those stakeholders. In addition, we work very closely with representative groups of patients and patient advocacy groups to make sure that we are known and to make sure that we understand what specific patient groups might need from companies like ours. So we kind of connect the dots, I guess, and an otherwise somewhat siloed system sometimes, and consider ourselves a platform player. Organizational assessments can sound intimidating—like a test, a grade, or a “gotcha.” We sit down with Joan Brown, Chief Operations Officer at Third Sector Company, to reframe assessments as one of the smartest business moves a nonprofit can make—especially during leadership transition.Joan explains that a strong organizational assessment is not about blame. It's a systematic look at operations, performance, systems, and culture to answer one question: Are we operating in the best possible way to serve our mission? The real value is that it creates clarity and alignment across the organization—so decisions can be made with facts, not feelings or assumptions. This conversation is especially timely for boards and leaders navigating an interim period. Joan shares why assessment belongs at the top of the interim playbook: it builds a shared reality of where the organization truly stands. And that shared reality becomes the foundation for priorities, staffing decisions, resource deployment, and even a far more accurate CEO/ED job description—particularly after a long-term “legacy leader” has held an outsized set of responsibilities for years. You'll also hear the nuanced difference between transitions when a beloved CEO departs versus when a leader has been let go: in one case, people may defend the past; in the other, emotion can flood the process. Either way, a transparent and participatory assessment helps separate noise from truth and turns tension into forward motion.Joan says it best: “The main goal of the assessment process is shared reality.” When nonprofits build that shared reality early—using data, participation, and transparency—they gain the power to prioritize confidently, stabilize culture, and position the next leader for success. If your board is preparing for leadership change, facing recurring “fires,” or simply wants better decisions with limited resources—this episode is your push to start the assessment conversation now.Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Accessibility has long been aided by the advancement of technology. When it comes to artificial intelligence, accessibility is top of mind for Taylor Arndt, Chief Operations Officer at Techopolis Online Solutions. Arndt has been blind since birth, and so accessibility has been a lifelong battle. When she was in school, she often received physical materials she was unable to read. So, she bought her own hand-held scanner and downloaded a screen reader. At 14, Arndt taught herself to code. Now as a coder working on AI, Arndt says in order for it to help others, the AI models need to be trained on data that has already incorporated accessibility measures.

In this week's episode of Parallax, Dr Ankur Kalra welcomes Dr Courtney Maxey-Jones, Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Upstate University Hospital and a cardiac anesthesiologist intensivist by training. Dr Maxey-Jones co-founded and serves as Chief Operations Officer of GOMED, a not-for-profit organization transforming how we think about medical device waste and global healthcare equity. Dr Maxey-Jones shares the origin story of GOMED - born from witnessing the staggering waste generated in cardiac operating rooms, where expensive single-use devices are discarded due to expiration dates or changing surgeon preferences.
