Today's episode marks the start of our in-depth series on the potential harms of faith-based counseling, examining how scripture can sometimes be misused as a tool of control rather than healing. Approximately one-quarter of U.S. adults—about 28 percent—identify as evangelical Christians, and many turn to church-run counseling rather than licensed therapists. But what are the consequences when Christian nationalism, purity culture, and patriarchy influence the guidance given, leading to harmful practices and the reinforcement of abusive systems? In this first episode, I am joined by Peter Bell, host of the Sons of Patriarchy podcast, to explore how “Bible-only” therapy often silences survivors, how patriarchal theology shapes advice on relationships and mental health, and the critical warning signs when pastoral care shifts into manipulation and control. This conversation serves as the foundation for the important discussions that follow throughout the series.
In this episode, I sit down with retired Navy SEAL commander and performance expert Rich Diviney who reveals the revolutionary "Mastering Uncertainty Method" - a science-backed approach that elite military operators use to thrive under pressure when things don't go according to plan.Drawing from over two decades of experience leading and training top performers (including founding the SEALs' "Mind Gym"), Rich breaks down how anyone can harness uncertainty as an advantage rather than a liability. We explore how Navy SEALs develop mental toughness, make decisive decisions under extreme pressure, and leverage their innate human capabilities to excel in chaotic environments.Rich shares practical strategies to:Transform uncertain moments into opportunitiesTap into your body's natural performance engine during difficult challengesMaintain composure under pressureImprove performance when stakes are highestUnderstand your "raw self" to determine optimal actions in any scenarioAvoid the traps causing 95% of teams to underperformBuild the four domains of trust essential to high-performing teamsWhether facing uncertainty in your personal or professional life, this conversation provides actionable insights to develop the mindset of an elite operator. As Simon Sinek says about Rich's work: "Easy to understand and simple to implement, Masters of Uncertainty is essential for any person or team that wants to operate even better than they do now."As Andrew Huberman writes in the foreword to Rich's latest book, and the focal point of today's podcast, Masters of Uncertainty: "This book is a practical guide for how to wake up and be the most effective version of yourself, how to bring that to all your life's challenges, and (most importantly) how to perpetually bounce upward and forward when pushed back or under pressure... and in so doing, exceed your previous self and performance—over and over and over.""People like Rich Diviney are rare: because of what they know, for what they have proved capable of doing, and for their ability to teach it to others... This book will powerfully shift how you view and approach life—its challenges and its less challenging moments too—for the better."Grab a Copy of The Books Here:- Masters of Uncertainty: https://amzn.to/41RdlB1- The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance: https://amzn.to/42aEdLhSpecial Offer:Unlock Your Leadership Potential. Unfortunately, we subscribe to the adage “You always finish what you start.” So, with the Odd Bods done, we've got the Even Stevens to complete. Time to Restump Podcast part two of the Buy Sell Hold 2024 report.Sometimes you can get caught up in and conflicted by your ideological values. Yes, we believe you should finish what you start, but having completed part one two weeks ago, devoid of reasoning, we've delayed until tomorrow what we could have done yesterday. However, if only our nonsense was worthy, we'd suggest all good things come to those who wait. But while time and tide wait for no one, it does little to stop the inevitable delivery of the mediocre. Thankfully, sewing confusion often serves as a pass generating act of distraction. So, enough of that later! Now that you're bamboozled and suffering a headache, hopefully you've forgotten we're late with the completion of the 2024 Buy Hold Sell report. So, let's get into it. With the list predominantly settled, we've got around twenty even Stevens, many of which write their own report. Is anyone in their right mind really not buying Andy Brayshaw, Hayden Young or Jordan Clark shares? Is Jye Amiss' stock wrongfully depressed after his handy but wayward kicking year? What is Jaegar O'Meara's current valuation? And, for that matter, are Sean Darcy's injuries impacting the financial decisions? Some tricky investment strategies need to be undertaken. There's plenty of other Docker data dropping. The fixtures are out for 2025 containing plenty of purple positives and it must be said we're not displeased the Roos are exiting Tasmania and entering WA.The Bell has rung time on Peter's purple career. In a literal sense Papa Smurf could fill his shoes, but metaphorically speaking and from a professional perspective, Aaron Sandilands's size 18 feet would still leave plenty of room. An astute, often necessarily ruthless, asset at the club will be missed and extremely difficult to replace. All that and way too much more gibberish that no one asked for. So, feel free to join us as we purple up the airwaves and prattle on about our favourite Freo football faction.Support the show

What if the toughest battles aren't fought in stadiums, but in the shadows of a broken childhood? In this profoundly moving episode, Fatima Whitbread shares a story that goes far beyond athletic triumph—it's one of survival, courage, and an unyielding spirit. Born into abandonment and forced to navigate the brutal realities of the care system, Fatima's early years were a battle against neglect, trauma, and profound loneliness. But from the ashes of her childhood emerged something remarkable: an iron will and a resilience that would not be crushed.Fatima opens up about the inner demons she faced, the darkness that nearly consumed her, and the life-changing influence of two incredible women—Auntie Ray and, later, Margaret Whitbread—who gave her the family she never knew. This isn't just a sports story; it's a testament to the power of the human spirit. It's about how, when pushed to the edge, we can rise not only for ourselves but for those generations who follow. From setting world records to standing on countless podiums and becoming a world champion, Fatima reflects on her greatest battles, which were not fought on the athletic field but within herself and traumas faced. Today, through her advocacy, she's using her platform to champion the rights of children in the care system—children, like her, who deserve a chance to rewrite their own stories.Timestamps:00:00 – Where It All Began01:28 – Life Beyond Sport02:52 – Inside the Children's Homes05:48 – The Power of Love09:42 – Confronting Trauma15:47 – Discovering Javelin21:11 – Becoming a Whitbread23:30 – Campaigning for Change29:16 – Early Training29:43 – Breaking Barriers30:26 – World Records & Olympic Dreams31:09 – The Weight of Triumph31:47 – Facing Mental Health Challenges33:48 – Navigating the Darkest Moments34:34 – The Pressure of Media & Writing Her Story39:07 – The Olympic Journey44:45 – Making Her Voice Count45:04 – From Athlete to TV Star51:43 – Legacy56:46 – Final ThoughtsThis isn't just a story of sporting success—it's an exploration of what it means to persevere, to push through adversity, and to transform suffering into strength. Who could have believed it? On a cold, wet night in Westminster, Rishi Sunak stunned the nation with an unexpected announcement: a General Election for July 4th. Today's podcast couldn't be more timely as we dive into an in-depth analysis of the UK's political and economic landscape over the past 14 years. From the impacts of austerity and Brexit to the COVID-19 pandemic, we cover it all.Joined by Dr. Nicola Headlam, an expert in subnational economic policy development, we dissect the mismanagement of these crises, the deterioration of public services, and the widening inequality gap. This episode is essential listening for anyone invested in the UK's political and economic future. Our conversation critiques current government policies, highlighting the urgent need for a robust plan to tackle economic inequality, recapitalise the poor, and fundamentally shift the country's economic strategies. We advocate for a future government that prioritises progress over power and implements policies that genuinely benefit the population, countering the systemic challenges of years of poor governance.Timestamps:00:00 Opening Remarks00:21 Insights on UK's Economic Challenges00:45 The Banking Crisis and Long-term Effects05:03 Sunak's Leadership and Political Landscape06:39 The Impact of Austerity, Brexit, and COVID08:49 The Dire State of Public Services13:07 Economic Policies and Time for Change18:33 The Role of Local Government and Community in Recovery33:08 Addressing Inequality and the Future of UK34:42 Butler to the World: A Detailed List of Heterodox Economic Thinkers & Books for a Path Forward38:40 Reimagining UK's Economic and Social Policies53:50 Closing ThoughtsEnjoyed the podcast?
#151 Principle Centric with Simon Oliver Sensei Over 50 years of study, practical application, and obsessive interest in the martial arts means Simon Oliver delivers some of the most Dynamic martial arts Seminars around. Born in 1961 into a rare martial arts heritage both his father and grandfather were former Jujutsu and judo practitioners Simon Oliver started learning Jujutsu and judo at the tender age of six years to try and calm is boisterous nature. It was a chance experience that lead him into starting karate after seeing a demonstration at Alexander Palace in London by a group of senior Japanese Sensei; he pestered his father to find a dojo. Simon was eventually introduced to karate by a student of the great Tatsuo Suzuki who was a friend of his father. Peter Bell provided private tuition in the Wado Ryu style, due to the age restriction on people starting karate during the late 1960's early 70's. Simon received his Shodan with the Wado Ryu before the family moved to Doncaster where he met Alan Rushby Sensei who was teaching the Shukokai (Shito Ryu) style. It was during this time that Simon started to develop a keen interest in Kobujutsu (Old style weapons) and started training in various traditional weapons. Seems to be a fair bit of angst directed at the club for some reason, but hey, don't shooter the messenger! Time to Restump Podcast the latest trade week nonsense. There is no doubt Lachie Schultz is a loss and we'd all rather he stayed but the level of angst and anger towards the club and Peter Bell is misplaced. No disrespect to Lachie Schultz intended, but it's as if its Caleb Serong or Hayden Young who has opted to leave! We get it, footy is an emotional opinion-based business and all views are welcomed and entitled to be presented. But talk of culture issues and mentions of player exodus just seems so wide of the mark.Could it be the club is doing something we have never done before? Is it showing ruthlessness in its pursuit of success? Understandably, cutting deep and holding its nerve to deliberately go after genuine sustainable success is a foreign policy to us, but it takes some courage to implement it.If there were a culture problem at Freo, we wouldn't have the rich deep vein of players we do and they wouldn't have committed to the deals they have. On that note it seems unlikely Freo entering the Tyler Brockman chat is for anything other than a mutually beneficial tactic with Hawthorn. Tyler Brockman, despite his ability and upside, doesn't seem the type of player we would suddenly be interested in, especially as he isn't like for the like with Lachie Schultz. We've lost a Lachie Weller and a Lachie Neale.... we can lose a Lachie Schultz standing on our heads with one arm tied behind our backs. So, the week goes on and in Wallsy world, it's just getting quieter and quieter for Fremantle! We've chipped in with our two cents worth so far but even at that it's debatable anyone is getting listening value for money. But hey, feel free to come along for the ride and don't be shy in getting involved. Support the show

Embrace the challenge and conquer the impossible. This is the unwavering spirit of the Royal Marines, encapsulated in the famous motto, "No cuff too tough." As a former Royal Marine Commando, Simon has faced some of the toughest challenges imaginable. But with eight years of service and three tours under his belt, he has emerged as a true beacon to the power of mindset, resilience, belief, and courage."Mindset is a skillset, but if you don't treat it as that, things are never going to change." ~ Simon Jeffries. From the battlefield to the boardroom to co-founder of the Natural Edge, Simon's indomitable spirit has never wavered. Through his experiences in special forces, he found a kindred spirit in his business partner, John Sykes-Popham. Together, they have forged a path of success that reflects the same unbreakable determination that drives the Royal Marines. This is a conversation about the primacy of purpose, the power of passion, and the pursuit of self-discovery. It's about resilience, self-accountability, and overcoming limiting beliefs. And it's about the embracement of pain as a crucible for growth and development. Ultimately, this is a conversation about what it means to forge true confidence, to chase down your dreams and live a life of happiness and purpose. In Segment 1- From Battlefield to Boardroom: Simon shares his background as a Special Forces soldier and his transition to a management consultancy in London. We're going to take a breath on the CTO Connection podcast for the next 3-4 weeks. When we first started the podcast, it was a “startup CTO podcast”. We've really enjoyed sharing the wisdom and experience of our guests on building and managing engineering teams at startups. However, we've seen over time that the challenges of running (say) a 5-20 person engineering team are very different from those involved when running a 200+ person org. And as many of our original startup CTOs have scaled their orgs to 200 people and beyond, we've decided to follow them.Because of that, we're going to refocus the podcast, the content, the summits, and the community on “geeks who lead at scale” - senior engineering leaders in larger companies with 200+ full-time employees in product/engineering. In that way, we'll be able to provide information that is more consistently tuned to one of the most challenging tasks out there - leading engineering orgs at scale. At the same time as we make the community more exclusive, we're also going to make it more inclusive. Whether you're running data, security, IT, or software development, there are many similarities when you're working within a company of around 500 - 10,000 employees. I've been involved with a number of “CTO” clubs across the US and in each case, I've seen the benefits of having a range of roles (from CIO and CISO to CDO and CTO - as well as directors and VPs of Software, Platform, Data/Analytics, and Security), as many of the challenges are the same, and it means the community has deeper expertise in a number of key topics if a CDO wants to learn more about engineering best practices for their data team or a CTO needs a hot take on an AppSec challenge they're facing.I am disappointed that - given our limited resources - we won't be able to continue the focus on content specifically tailored to startup CTOs, but I look forward to refining our focus so we can scale our ability to share experiences and insights from and between geeks who lead at scale.
