Achoo! We're falling in love with the one and only Faith Prince. You Might Know Her From Modern Family, Emily in Paris, Melissa & Joey, Spin City, My Father the Hero, The Last Dragon, and Broadway productions of Guys & Dolls, A Catered Affair, Bells Are Ringing, and BOOP! Faith talked to us about grounding her character, Valentina, in the cartoonish plot of BOOP!, coping with fame during her star-making turn in Guys & Dolls, and leaning on her co-star Gerard Depardieu in one of her first leading roles on camera in My Father the Hero. Faith also shared stories from working as a Broadway replacement in the cumbersome costume of Ursula in The Little Mermaid and the notoriously “realistic” production of Anne as Miss Hannigan. All that, plus working with theatre legends like Jerome Robbins, Abe Burrows, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, doing dialect work at Joey Lawrence and Lily Collins, doing her best Cyndi Lauper in cult fave The Last Dragon (and making pals with Berry Gordy, and working with Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell in the short-lived High Society. This one was a HOOT. Welcome back to the pod! This week we're heading back to 2011 and the film Margin Call. Now lots of you may have missed this when it first came out but its online popularity has given it a real second wind. We get stuck into some of the best scenes in the film in particular the boardroom sequence where Jeremy Irons lays down the law, we discuss the nature of how money can change an individual, how morality and self preservation can get in the way of each other and what lengths people will go to to ensure survival in their own bubble. How about this for a cast by the way: Kevin Spacey as Sam Rogers, Paul Bettany as Will Emerson, Jeremy Irons as John Tuld, Zachary Quinto as Peter Sullivan, Stanley Tucci as Eric Dale, Simon Baker as Jared Cohen, Demi Moore as Sarah Robertson, Penn Badgley as Seth Bregman, Mary McDonnell as Mary Rogers, Aasif Mandvi as Ramesh Shah. Hell of a shoot out for MVP!There are few redeeming features around any of the characters but we take a look at which characters seem to have some level of moral sensibility - as we rank them on the scumbagometer! Finally we discuss whether a film can become a fine wine through the nature of its online presence and being resurfaced through Youtube! Lots to get into - back with you on Friday with what to watch this weekend!Time to get watching for next week: Into the Wild (2007) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After all these years, does Donnie Darko still stand the test of time, or does it need to travel back to 2001? Tune in to find out!Donnie Darko is directed by Richard Kelly and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katherine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Noah WyleNot A Bomb just launched new designs in our Merch store! MERRY SHAQMAS, EVERYONE! We hit pause on DePalmber: Part De this week and pick up our annual Christmas tradition of exploring the filmography of basketball player / actor Shaquille O'Neal, here making his acting debut in a Nick Nolte-helmed character drama loosely based on notorious college coach Bobby Knight. It's 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin, and starring Nolte, Shaq, Mary McDonnell, Ed O'Neill, J.T. Walsh, Alfre Woodard, Penny Hardaway, Anthony C. Hall and Bobby Knight. This was Friedkin's return to the fold after 20 years of banishment at Paramount, following a serious falling out with the studio during the production of (previous episode fodder) Sorcerer, and while the movie is far more of a one-for-us more so than a one-for-you, the prolific director still brings so much more life to the sports drama genre than this sort of thing is typically infused with. Plus, contrary to what we were led to believe from watching Steel last year, Shaq actually can act, and shows star-quality comedy chops and an earnest vulnerability that he would snuff out in later years while leaning into cartoon shtick. Sadly, Blue Chips is not available to stream on Paramount+, or anywhere for that matter, but can be rented for about $5 on YouTube. And it's worth checking out! Other works discussed on this episode include The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Kraven The Hunter, The Producers (2005), The Producers (1967), Young Frankenstein, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Scrooged, Office Christmas Party, It's In the Game: Madden NFL, Ready or Not, Bad Boys: Ride of Die, V/H/S, Hustle and Civil War. We'll be back next week to close out 2024 with our DePalmber: Part De canon consideration, as we put De Palma's 1981 show biz crime thriller under the microscope and finally dedicate an entire episode to John Travolta and Nancy Allen in Blow Out! Blow Out is currently streaming for free (in Canada at least) on the people's streamer, Tubi. Until then, we'll see you at the movies, and a happy Shaqmas to all!!

Blue Chips featured Nick Nolte, fantastic as a college hoops coach, and young Shaq & Penny Hardaway as recruits, but in 2024 is the booster Happy played by the late JT Walsh the real hero? Join us for Blue Chips, a college basketball movie from 1994 starring Nick Nolte, Shaq O'Neal, Penny Hardaway, Ed O'Neill, Alfre Woodard, Bob Cousy, Mary McDonnell, JT Walsh, Bob Cousy, Matt Nover, Marques Johnson, Robert Wuhl, Bobby, Knight, Rick Pitino, George Raveling, Larry Bird, Dick Vitale… You get the point. Maybe like me, this one grew on you when you realized the movie wasn't about the big game. In 1994, everyone was still taught to believe a player who wanted anything more than a scholarship was a greedy leech with no love for the game…and we just never really asked where all the money did go. This movie did help that conversation along, but it also had some fantastic performances - even by non-actors - some really funny scenes and, of course, probably the best movie basketball playing ever.
Send us a Text Message. On our 87th episode we're looking back at the year 1996, a simpler time when humanity came together and made big hits out of unsophisticated and unabashedly emotional sci-fi adventures. We're talking Independence Day directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, Mary McDonnell, Robert Loggia, James Rebhorn, Brent Spiner, Vivica A. Fox and Randy Quaid and Star Trek First Contact directed by Jonathan Frakes and starring Patrick Stewart, Frakes, Brent Spiner, Levar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, Alfre Woodard, Alex Krige and James Cromwell. I'm Gino Caputi and returning for the follow up to our sci fi 1994 episode which compared Emmerich's Stargate to the previous TNG Star Trek film subtitled Generations are author/hypnotist Joe Field and Utah IT tech and reformed TNG superfan Burton Brown. Gentlemen, welcome. Before we get into it, the synopses: The people of the planet Earth are utterly astonished and horrified when on July 2nd 1996, an enormous spacecraft, half the size of the moon, launches 10 city-sized spacecraft over the world's major cities which proceed to blow them to smithereens. It's up to President Tom Whitmore, Ace Fighter Pilot Captain Steve Hiller and MIT genius David Levinson to devise a plan on Independence Day to stop the alien army. In Star Trek First Contact Captain Jean-Luc Picard's old foe the cybernetic Borg return to conquer the Federation once and for all by traveling back in time to the mid 21st Century to stop Warp Drive Pioneer Zefram Cochrane from making first contact with an advanced alien species. Picard and his brave crew of the brand new USS Enterprise E risk losing their ship and being stranded in the 21st Century forever when they follow the Borg into the past in order to thwart their nefarious plan. Episode 34 - Hype: Sneakers (1992)There are so many great movies that came from the 90's, but “Sneakers” is one that not only stands out but is one that I either return from time to watch again and again or stop and watch some (or all of) whenever I find it playing anywhere. While I can appreciate dark, twisted espionage thrillers, 'Sneakers' takes a different path. It steers away from what we have more recently been accustomed to with the usual gritty tones for a blend of light-hearted mischief, humor, and suspense, making it a uniquely enjoyable experience.. You have a one of a kind cast with Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, Donal Logue, Stephen Tobolowsky, Timothy Busfield and more. It kind of (I am reaching here a little bit) feels like the precursor to the Ocean's 11 reboot with its group of goofy characters facing real threats. This movie is written by the team behind “WarGames” and is directed by the always entertaining Phil Alden Robinson (“Field of Dreams”, “The Sum of All Fears”, and the series “The Good Fight”). The movie's crown jewel, however, is its music. Composer James Horner, known for 'Avatar', 'Braveheart', and 'Titanic', delivers one of my all-time favorite scores. Everyone behind and in front of the camera brings their A-game to this movie. Yes at times its a little cheesy and feels a little dated, but none of that gets in the way of this movie being pure fun. The only frustration I have with this movie is its bad title. As you will hear in this episode, there were other great title options that were included in the movie! Other than that one (but important) frustration this early 90's hit is one that if you have not seen it that I highly recommend you check out. “Sneakers” is available to rent and or purchase on all platforms. Enjoy the movie and thanks for listening. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit sohrabsmovieq.substack.com

The John Sayles-directed film is set in 1920s Mingo County and dramatizes the Matewan Massacre, a bloody battle between coal miners and Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency men. While Chris Cooper's character — Joe Kenehan — is not real, the film follows real-life coal miners who are looking to form a union. Kenehan comes to Matewan to bring the members of the community together in the face of company forces and the detective agency. The film stars Cooper, in his movie debut, alongside talents like James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell and Kentucky-born singer and actor Will Oldham. To be inducted, the Library of Congress says the 25 films picked each year are “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” The movie must also be at least 10 years old. Kate Siegel is a Collider Ladies Night favorite for a multitude of reasons. Just to name a few, she's wildly talented, does exceptionally thoughtful and detailed backstory work, and she values the opportunity to build a filmmaking community and lift others up through it. She's been doing all of that for years now, but as the Flanafamily grows and as her individual star rises higher and higher, there is no doubt she'll become an even stronger force in boosting high-quality, bold storytelling made by good, talented people. The most recent example of Siegel being a key part of such a production is The Fall of the House of Usher. Created by Mike Flanagan and directed by Flanagan and Michael Fimognari, the series focuses on the Fortunato Pharmaceuticals empire run by siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher (Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell). Having always operated as though the Usher family is untouchable, Roderick and Madeline are shocked when their empire starts to crumble as the members of the Usher dynasty are killed off one by one. With The Fall of the House of Usher available to watch on Netflix and beginning its awards season run, racking up three acting nominations at the Critics Choice Awards, Siegel was kind enough to take the time to return to Collider Ladies Night and offer up additional insight into her journey in Hollywood thus far. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Put on your rattiest bunny suit and good luck avoiding that falling jet engine as we moodily sleepwalk into 2001's Donnie Darko. Could this movie end friendships on this podcast? Is this a unique lucid dreamscape put on film, or just plain pretentious? Is Jake Gyllenhaal creepy or dreamy? And can we get a whole movie about Jolene Purdy's Cherita instead? You might find some answers in the Director's Cut of this super-sized episode.
Mike Flanagan's latest horror effort, The Fall of the House of Usher, has arrived on Netflix just in time for Halloween! Serving as a modernized tribute and anthology to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, it weaves together a variety of the author's short stories and poetry around a larger narrative of one family's responsibility for the American opioid epidemic. The series provides a variety of pulpy and fun moments, but struggles to contain a ham-fisted and overly preachy condemnation of capitalism. Mark Hamill, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, and the rest of the ensemble cast shine as the deeply unlikable Usher family and their cronies, and the cinematography is also memorable and spectacular.
Chris and Taylor review the gothic horror drama television miniseries, The Fall of the House of Usher, created by Mike Flanagan. Loosely based on the short story of the same name and other works by Edgar Allan Poe, it premiered on Netflix. In the series, the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company faces his questionable past when his children start dying in mysterious and brutal ways. The series stars Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, T'Nia Miller, Zach Gilford, Willa Fitzgerald, Michael Trucco, Katie Parker, Sauriyan Sapkota, Matt Biedel, Crystal Balint, Ruth Codd, Kyliegh Curran, Carl Lumbly, and Mark Hamill.Follow us on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepotentialpodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepotentialpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thepotentialpodSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/thepotentialpodcastThanks to our sponsor: KEENKeen: get your first 10 minutes with any psychic advisor for only 1.99 with our link - that's $99 In savings: https://trykeen.com/potential ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
