A man, or being, dressed from head to foot in camouflage and a gas mask has been seen in the woods near Mauls Switzerland. He hung around for about ten years before vanishing. Along Route 351, people used to see a faceless man, called Charley No Face, walking along, late at night. He was also known as The Green Man. The Poe Toaster used to visit Edgar Allen Poe's grave and toast him early on January 19. Who was the North Pond Hermit and where did he come from. Here are some, out of the ordinary people, living their lives, outside the box.
Every year on Edgar Allan Poe's birthday, someone sneaks into a Baltimore graveyard and mysteriously places a bottle of cognac on his grave. It's been going on for more than 40 years, and no one knows who it is or why they do it. Enrica Jang, Director of the Baltimore Poe Museum, shares stories of the famous poet and master of the macabre with Brian. The topic of interest was the "Poe Toaster", a mysterious midnight visitor to the Poe tomb in Baltimore every January 19th, who would arrive stealthily wearing a black cloak and leaving behind a partially finished bottle of liquor and three roses. "Enrica Jang is the director of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. She is also a comics writer, editor, novelist, sometimes screenwriter. For our Halloween episode, we explore the strange death of the master of the macabre himself, Edgar Allan Poe. --- Cassandra Harold is your host. EM Hilker is our principal writer and researcher with additional writing by Cassandra Harold. Jim Harold is our Executive Producer. Unpleasant Dreams is a production of Jim Harold Media. You can find EM Hilker's original article HERE PODCAST TRANSCRIPT There is much that can be said about Edgar Allan Poe, but in terms of his literary habits, little that needs to be. Much more famous in death than he was in life, he was nevertheless a literary critic of some renown in his own time. His true love, however, was lurid, ghastly fiction. Poe unknowingly fathered the genre of detective fiction, through his tales of C. Auguste Dupin. The most well-known Dupin story was The Murders in the Rue Morgue, which served to set the stage for Sherlock Holmes and his ilk. He is best known now for his gothic fiction, morbid tales filled with crumbling stone castles and candle-lit catacombs, of demonic foes and bitter sweet revenge. He brought us The Raven, Hop-Frog, The Fall of the House of Usher. The creative mind of Poe was deep and dark and mysterious as a night ocean. … but little is so mysterious as Poe's own death.... Incel, short for involuntary celibate, is a term the romantically and sexually frustrated have claimed as their own over the past few years. Many incel groups have been attacked with charges of misogyny and plotting violence. This week's feature looks at two young men commonly associated with the term, Elliott Rodger and Alek Minassian, who committed mass murders as an act of revenge against the women of the world who had spurned them. Elsewhere on the show, we take a special look at the odd death of Edgar Allen Poe and the mysterious tradition of a disguised man leaving a letter and flowers on his grave and toasting in his name every year on his birthday. For nearly 80 years, someone (or someones) was seen toasting Poe with a glass of cognac, leaving the bottle and three roses on Poe's original grave. The identity of this someone is still a mystery.
For most of the 20th century, a man in black appeared each year at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe. In the predawn hours of January 19, he would drink a toast with French cognac and leave behind three roses in a distinctive arrangement. No one knows who he was or why he did this. In this episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the history of the "Poe Toaster" and his long association with the great poet's memorial. We'll also consider whether Winnie-the-Pooh should be placed on Ritalin and puzzle over why a man would shoot an unoffending monk.
