The Trauma Journal Club will feature articles from top experts in orthopedic hand and trauma research, emphasizing relevant studies to clinical practice and fostering in-depth discussions. This session will focus on Distal Radius Fractures. It will provide an opportunity to dive into the motivations behind the research, evaluate changes in clinical practice, discuss study limitations, and highlight key takeaways.Article 1: Radiographic Outcomes of dorsal spanning plate without and without volar plate fixation for comminuted intraarticular distal radius fractures.Article 2: Outcomes of volar plating distal radius fractures based on surgical timingArticle 3: Effect of time to surgery on surgical site infection in open distal radius fractures: a review of the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program database
The Trabecular Metal Total Ankle Implant differs from other newer-generation implants in the transfibular approach, multiplanar external frame for alignment, tantalum trabecular metal interfaces, curved geometry, and shallow resection depths. The primary aim of this study was to report midterm clinical and radiographic results, as well as survivorship and adverse events at a minimum of 5-year follow-up. In conclusion, at a minimum of 5 years, patients who underwent TM TAA reported minimal ankle pain and regained neutral ankle alignment and mobility, without septic or aseptic implant loosening. Although having certain limitations, this study suggests that TM TAA is a viable option for the treatment of end-stage ankle arthritis. Click here to read the article.
Welcome to the 11th EPISODE of the BSCOS Paediatric Orthopaedic Digest (POD)cast & our 3rd festive episode we have invited more orthopaedic royalty: Professor Tim Theologis! Although recently retired from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, he continues to be heavily involved in academic research especially in children with cerebral palsy. He is principal investigator for a number of multi-centre randomised control trials including CPinBOSS, PICBONE, SPELL, ROBUST and is working on developing outcome measures for elective lower limb surgery in children. As past president of BSCOS we all learnt so much from his wisdom, his drive to continue understanding in our field, and supporting the next generation of surgeons. Listen in to the episode to learn more! We scoured 35 journals & highlighted the most impactful studies that we feel can change practice or improve outcomes in Paediatric Orthopaedics. Current practice patterns for the management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury favor surgical reconstruction. However, long-term outcomes may not differ between patients completing operative and nonoperative treatment of ACL injury. Differences in outcomes between operative and nonoperative treatment of patients in the United States is largely unknown, as are outcomes in long-term strength and performance measures. The current findings indicate that favorable outcomes can occur after both operative and nonoperative management approaches with the use of progressive criterion-based rehabilitation. Further study is needed to determine clinical algorithms for identifying the best candidates for surgical versus nonoperative care after ACL injury. These findings provide an opportunity to improve the educational process between patients and clinicians regarding the expected clinical course and long-term outcomes of operative and nonoperative treatment of ACL injuries. Obesity is a known risk factor for the development of adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD), but obesity’s effects on outcomes following AAFD reconstruction are unknown. The study hypothesized that obesity would negatively impact outcomes following joint-preserving stage II AAFD reconstruction. This study found that although obese patients had significantly worse symptoms, overall health, and NRS pain scores preoperatively, the short-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of stage II AAFD reconstruction were similar for normal-weight, overweight, and obese patients. This suggests that joint-preserving reconstruction remains a viable alternative to fusion of the triple joint complex for the treatment of overweight and obese stage II AAFD patients.
