On this episode of Challenge Accepted, Thomas and Frank break down episodes 4–6 of Andor Season 2. From the show's Cold War-style spycraft to its bold commentary on propaganda and rebellion, the hosts dig into what makes this arc one of the best in Star Wars storytelling. They explore how Bix's trauma brings emotional depth, why Luthen is playing 4D chess with everyone's lives, and how the Gorman resistance draws heavy inspiration from real-world history. Plus, they highlight the episode's most intense scenes, character arcs, and political parallels that make Andor so gripping. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 Intro and structure of the arc 00:27 Reaction to episodes 4–6 as a cohesive unit 01:15 The density and emotional weight of each episode 02:07 One-year time jump and Bix's PTSD 03:25 The cost of rebellion and addiction as escape 04:19 Luthen's manipulation and cold leadership 05:52 Cassian's struggle between sacrifice and morality 06:36 The spy thriller format and deeper writing 08:07 Espionage layers and who is playing who 10:15 Gorman as the sacrificial spark 11:06 Syril's complex alignment and subtle performance 13:54 Star Wars universe tie-ins and worldbuilding 15:13 Syril's mom and media manipulation parallels 18:45 Historical inspiration from the French resistance 21:11 Willimon's role and Saw Gerrera's brutal methods 24:33 The cost of extreme leadership and terrorism debate 26:01 Bix and Cassian's revived relationship 27:14 Spy fashion and Cassian's new role 29:22 The tension-filled party and political subterfuge 33:24 Claire's risky heist and what it might cost 36:10 Cinta and Vel's fractured relationship 37:52 The devastating fallout of one fatal mistake 40:07 The armory's shadow and symbolism 42:17 Gorman's inevitable fall and the false hope 43:18 Final thoughts and next episode hopes Key Takeaways: Andor continues to push the boundaries of Star Wars storytelling with rich political themes and complex character dynamics. Luthen is playing a dangerous game, manipulating even his allies for the sake of the greater good. The Gorman resistance mirrors the real-life Maquis of WWII, making the rebellion feel historically grounded. Syril emerges as one of the most compelling wild cards, torn between loyalty and doubt. The show's choice not to spoon-feed the audience adds emotional weight and realism. Bix's arc powerfully illustrates the long-term psychological toll of war. The episodes' spy-thriller tone reinforces the stakes of espionage in a galaxy ruled by fear and control. Memorable Quotes: “Bix just has all the worst things. Between the PTSD, addiction, and everything she's endured… this is some heavy Star Wars.” “Luthen is willing to sacrifice Gorman so that others might rise. He's using the tools of the enemy to beat them.” “They're not heroes. They're kindling. They just don't know it.” “This is the spy thriller we didn't know we were missing.” “Are these rebels heroes or tyrants? It depends on which side of the coin you're on.” Call to Action: If you enjoyed this deep dive into Andor Season 2, be sure to subscribe, leave us a review, and share the episode using the hashtag #GormanIsAGoner. William Willimon Changes His Mind -Episode 563 - Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) In his new book Changing My Mind: The Overlooked Virtue for Faithful Ministry, Professor William H. Willimon narrates some of the twists and turns in his own journey as a pastor. The context of ministry continually changes, the surrounding culture changes, and a living God demands constant movement and change. So, the book argues, pastors and preachers must be prepared to change! Some of the current assumptions about how to persevere in ministry need to be questioned. What ideas and approaches do we need to change, in ourselves and in our ministries? And how, exactly, do we change our minds and practices, when we're called to be steady, stable, and sure? The book consists of guidance from an older, experienced pastoral leader to other pastoral leaders, especially young and new ones. Willimon frames the material around the ways he has changed his mind and offers crucial ways that he once thought about ministry compared and contrasted with how he thinks now. He depicts the pastoral vocation as requiring adaptation and revision by its practitioners. Along the way, the book includes conversations with First and Second Timothy as the precursor of this book, an older, experienced pastor (Paul) offering advice to a young, unseasoned pastor (Timothy). William H. Willimon is professor of the practice of Christian ministry at Duke Divinity School and a retired United Methodist Church bishop. A widely published author, preacher, and teacher of preachers, Willimon has written more than eighty books, many of which have been translated into many languages and have sold over a million copies. He is the author of Heaven and Earth: Advent and the Incarnation (Abingdon), The Gospel for the Person Who Has Everything (Paraclete Press), Leading with the Sermon: Preaching as Leadership (Fortress Press), and Aging: Growing Old in the Church (Baker Academic), among others. For twenty years Willimon served as dean of Duke Chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke Divinity School. Beau Willimon, who is known for writing the Netflix political drama series House of Cards, has been tapped to write the script for James Mangold's upcoming Dawn of the Jedi Star Wars prequel film. Willimon has previously worked on Season One of Andor. A24 has dropped the first trailer for Maxxxine, the final chapter in the acclaimed X horror trilogy from Ti West that stars Mia Goth. The film releases in theaters on July 5.
In a move that has Star Wars aficionados and film enthusiasts buzzing with anticipation, James Mangold has enlisted Beau Willimon, the creative force behind the critically acclaimed series House of Cards, to co-write the upcoming Star Wars film. This collaboration promises to inject fresh energy and depth into the beloved universe. Willimon, a seasoned storyteller who contributed to the success of Star Wars: Andor, brings a rich narrative acumen to the table. His work on Andor, especially the celebrated episode "One Way Out," earned him an Emmy nomination, highlighting his adeptness at weaving compelling tales within the Star Wars tapestry. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, the film's working title, aims to explore the origins of the Force, set a staggering 25,000 years before the events of the original saga. Mangold, known for his directorial prowess in Logan, seeks to craft a narrative that pays homage to the saga's roots while exploring new horizons. His vision? To tell the "Ten Commandments of the Force" - an ambitious origin story that demystifies how the Force was discovered and mastered. Mangold's approach indicates a desire to delve into untold chapters of the Star Wars universe, unburdened by the extensive lore that characterizes the franchise. This fresh perspective could offer fans a novel and enriching exploration of the Force, arguably the saga's most mystical and compelling element. While Dawn of the Jedi does not have a confirmed release date, the Star Wars community is already abuzz with speculation and excitement. In the meantime, the franchise's extensive slate of upcoming releases, including a movie focusing on The Mandalorian and Grogu set for May 2026, and Disney+ series such as Star Wars: Tales of the Empire and The Acolyte, ensures that fans will have plenty of content to savor as they await Mangold and Willimon's epic. With James Mangold and Beau Willimon at the helm, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is poised to be a groundbreaking addition to the Star Wars universe. Their collaboration signals a bold step forward, promising a story that both honors and expands the lore that has captivated audiences for decades. For the last few weeks, I've spoken about ‘Scary Church;' these churches failed their members by not teaching them proper biblical teachings and practices and not leading them in the past of discipleship. These were ‘scary churches' because the Christians were either uninterested or incapable of sharing their faith and representing their faith in the presence of others! Today, though, I will talk to you about a different type of ‘scary' church – a church that takes its responsibilities of training Christians seriously and leading them on a path of discipleship, and service. Let me begin with a true story, as told by a popular campus minister several years ago: In the past, William Willimon, the Campus Minister at Duke Ministry, told of an intense phone call with a student's father. The father had complained that his daughter, a bright student with a bright future in the business world, had decided to change her life's plan and become a missionary to Haiti, an impoverished nation between Cuba and the Dominican Republic. He screamed in anger, “I hold you responsible for this!” What follows is a brief recounting of the conversation: Willimon asked him, “Why me?” The father stated clearly, “Because you ingratiated yourself and filled her mind with all this religious stuff.” The minister asked the father, “Sir, weren't you the one who had her baptized?” He replied, “Well, well, well, yes.” “And didn't you take her to Sunday School when she was a little girl?” “Well, well, yes.” “And didn't you allow your daughter to go on those youth group ski trips to Colorado in high school?” “Yes. . . what does that have to do with anything?” “Sir, you're the reason she's throwing it all away. You introduced her to Jesus. Not Me!” The exasperated father exclaimed at this, “But all we wanted was a Presbyterian.” The minister closed the conversation by saying, “Well, sorry, sir, you messed up. You've gone and made a disciple!” That is the result of a ‘scary' church! An individual who takes their faith seriously seeks God's call on their life and then, if necessary, sacrifices their former plans to follow God's leading – no matter what! That is the result of a scary church, and that is the result of a scary faith – a faith that disrupts one's life plans and leads them to a life of sacrifice, and service. . . and blessing! Jesus said this in one of his sermons, in Matthew 10:37 ff: “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake shall find it.” Jesus fully intended for us to be a part of a scary church that taught us to follow Him and to become a scary Christian who would stop at nothing to follow Him. History has shown that scary Christians are an often unstoppable force behind some of God's greatest movements in history! Let us all be diligent in the practice of our faith and choose to be obedient to God's call every day. You can best support our Ministry by sharing these videos with your friends and family. We also need your financial contributions to make our ministries possible. You can contribute online at https://firstbaptistofindependence.aware3.net/give/ Thank you for listening. We will see you next week!
We often think of speaking up as an act of courage. And of course, there are times when it most certainly is. But what about the courage to listen? The best kind of generous listening is interesting because it seems to acknowledge and create a mutual agency. The courageous, generous listener grants the speaker an authority to have the floor and make a point or drop a bomb or tell it like it is. But that act of listening is itself an active mode of receptive agency. So the best kind of listening is a truly powerful thing because each party involved in this miracle of communication gets to be present in fullness. That is not something that can be done by the speaker alone. The ability to create the conditions for that mutual agency is up to the listener. But when you apply that to a religious scenario—the preaching and hearing of the gospel, things get interesting.Whether its from the window of St. Peter's Basilica, or from the screams of a megaphone wielding street preacher, or the pulpit of your small, faithful community church… something profound seems to be happening when we listen to someone speak and illumine the Word of God.Will Willimon, who has trained many preachers and written several books on preaching and homiletics, has written a book for listeners, both acknowledging and uplifting the act of listening to sermons. Will is Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School and he came on the show with me to talk about his book, Listeners Dare: Hearing God in the Sermon.Together we discuss the act of listening and the rare achievement it seems to be; the definition and purpose of a sermon, and what that might mean for its listeners; how to cultivate the charity and courage to listen; and the inherent risk involved in genuinely and generously listening to the gospel.Show NotesListeners Dare: Hearing God in the SermonPreaching is a demanding skill for both preachers and their audiences.Scripture itself pays attention to audiences as well as speakers.Listeners come to sermons with expectations. For sermons to most benefit the audience, preachers can guide their listeners to ask the right questions of a sermon. What is proclamation?Like the Bible itself, sermons can take a wide array of literary forms to communicate the truth of God. Because it proclaims truth about God, the Bible itself can be seen as a sort of sermon.“Christian sermons, ought to arise out of an encounter with scripture.”The gospels began a new genre of literature to communicate the truth of Christ. The genre or form of sermons continues to evolve and diversify today with outside influences such as TED Talks.Fred Craddock and the narrative unfolding sermonVerse-by-verse discovery in a sermonOne definition of preaching is “a biblical preacher goes to the biblical text hoping to make a discovery. Then you announce that discovery to the congregation.”At times when a preacher has no audience, such as street preachers, there is still something compelling about the preacher's commitment to their message, that regardless of its reception it must be spoken.Preaching requires charity and risk from listeners, so they can open themselves to the possibility of hearing and being transformed by another's message.Listening requires daring because the gospel message presented by Christian preachers has the power to upend listeners' preexisting beliefs.“Preaching is a confrontation with the God who came to us, who is a Jew from Nazareth, who lived briefly, died violently, and rose unexpectedly—preaching is about that.”Listening, and listening to God, are skills that can be cultivated.“We have a revealing, talkative, loquacious God.”It is helpful for listeners of sermons to assume both the preacher and God hope to communicate with their listeners.Listeners must be willing to learn from, critique, and engage with sermons.“Listeners are the playground of the Holy Spirit.”Preachers partner with the Holy Spirit to bring sermons to their congregation, even using difficult passages of scripture to further engage listeners.John 6 and the “hard sayings” of JesusListeners Dare! :) Will mentions a teenagers compliment to him once: “That was the most f—ed up thing I have ever heard… it was wonderful.”The courage to keep listeningAbout Will WillimonThe Reverend Dr. William H. Chris and Eddie are joined again by Reverend Dr. Will Willimon, Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School and former Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. Rev. Willimon, Chris, and Eddie talk about what it means to be part of the United Methodism, with its tradition of being the Gospel on the move, and how that tradition translates into today's world.Rev. Willimon has five decades of preaching and teaching experience, and as a lifelong Methodist, he's got a few opinions and ideas about the current issues facing the denomination and American Christianity as a whole--and he shares those opinions with humor and candor, and also with urgency and sadness over the difficulties facing God's Church today. This particular conversation doesn't cover Rev. This past Sunday Pastor Vic continued our series on the Sermon on the Mount by preaching on Matthew 6:5-15. He laid a framework for prayer by focussing on God as a God who speaks and desires to listen to us. Prayer is communication with God where we hear from him and speak back to him. Pastor Vic walked us through the Lord's prayer line by line to show us why Jesus modeled this prayer and the implications for us. He emphasized six key characteristics of kingdom people. Kingdom people… think when they pray seek to pray well pray for the Kingdom to come are forgiving people have a battle win sin pray together There is a quote that captures the importance of praying together well: “There may be religions that come to you through quiet walks in the woods, or by sitting quietly in the library with a book, or by rummaging around int he recesses of your psyche. Christianity is not one of them. Christianity is inherently communal, a matter of life in the Body, the church. Jesus did not call isolated individuals to follow him. He called a group of disciples.” - Hauerwas and Willimon Pastor Vic left us with a few important practices to end our time. Memorize, learn, and regularly thoughtfully worshipfully pray the Lord's prayer Spend time in conversation with the trinity (you, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit) Pray this prayer together sin corporate worship

What better way to start our season about the values the church must carry forward into the future than with the ‘gadfly of the church,' Bishop Will Willimon! Co-host Gil Rendle points out that as the gadfly of the church, Will both loves and cares about the institution AND asks critically important questions that challenge the church to be better. You won't want to miss this compelling story-packed episode that includes topics like how Jesus disrupts contented churches, why purpose is so important right now and Will's advice to pastors in today's context. In this conversation, you'll hear: Gil Rendle shares the meaning behind his paper “Jacob's Bones.” What should we carry forward? (02:52) Will Willimon's call to ministry and relationship with the church (13:36) How Jesus Christ disrupts otherwise happy, contented churches (19:46) Why getting clear on purpose is so important and how easy it is to get distracted (22:19) How to stay focused on what to keep and what to let go of (33:17) Willimon's hope for the church 20, 30, 40 years from now (51:00) QUOTES “It is easy to get distracted in the present moment. And sometimes I think the church argues about some of the stuff we're fighting over because it's' easier to fight over those subjects than to have a good argument about how can we have a future? How can we welcome in the two or three generations of Christians that we have excluded? That's hard, and maybe that's why we've been arguing.” -Will Willimon [25:59] “There's times when I think sometimes our Methodist problems are due to the fact that maybe we have taken our eye off of the ball. We have not allowed the main thing to be the main thing, and we've had our arguments. But at the end of the day, those arguments have got to answer to Jesus Christ.” -Will Willimon [29:17] Will Willimon's Bio The Reverend Dr. William H. Chris and Eddie are joined again by Reverend Dr. Will Willimon, Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School and former Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. This time around, Rev. Willimon is here to talk about preaching--but not as a preacher. In his most recent book, Listeners Dare: Hearing God in the Sermon, Rev. Willimon helps listeners get more out of a sermon (and helps preachers listen to their listeners) because “to be a Christian is to be a listener of God.”With five decades of preaching and teaching experience, Rev. Willimon has great respect for the listeners of God's Word. Listening to sermons is one of the main ways that God reaches God's people, so how do you listen well? How do you open yourself to a sermon that might not be about you or for you and come away with a change in your perspective? And how do preachers step aside and let the conversation happen between God and God's people freely? Rev. Willimon has a few ideas.Resources:Follow Will Willimon on the web:https://willwillimon.com Listeners Dare: Hearing God in the SermonCheck out Will Willimon's other books and publications here:https://willwillimon.com/writing/ Follow Will Willimon on social media:https://www.facebook.com/WillWillimonhttps://twitter.com/willimontweets

Have you heard a good sermon lately? 83% of people surveyed who attended a Christian church service said that the top reason for choosing and remaining in a church is the sermon. In this episode we talk with Rev. Dr. Will Willimon about sermons and listening to sermons. He is a pastor, bishop in the United Methodist Church and the author of, in his approximation, about 100 books. We have had the pleasure of speaking with Will about his writing on several occasions and were very happy to speak with him again about his most recent book, “Listeners Dare. ” It is an engaging examination of the role of the listener in the sermon. Will points out that any true hearing of a sermon requires divine assistance. Here are a few notes from the book; To preachers: “Beginning a sermon with a joke is nearly always a bad idea; including a sweet story about a child (particularly if the child is yours). It risks adulterating the gospel with maudlin sentimentality.” “Don't read your sermons; preaching is personal, bodily testimony to the gospel truth you have received, not a lecture about God.” To listeners: When told by a listener about a sermon, “I didn't get anything out of it”, a reply should potentially be, “So how much did you put into it?” “God's word usually comes to us through others, those who dare to tell us truth we wouldn't tell ourselves.”

Our mentor and muse, Will Willimon, is back on the podcast. His new book is Listeners Dare. Discipleship and witness are not self-sustainable. Preaching equips God's people for the work of serving and building up the body of Christ (Eph. 4:11).The gospel is news that passes from the lips of one who has heard to the ears of one who has not yet heard, then (God willing) it burrows in the soul, energizing the hands in daring response to a word received. Preaching is instigated by an astounding claim: Good news; God has spoken to us. The Christian life is what you get when ordinary folk respond: I have heard. The book (a companion to Preachers Dare) is for anyone who listens to sermons―which includes preachers, since there's no way to preach without gaining skills as a listener. Listening is a human skill, but as God's word is proclaimed, the hearer experiences a vocal mix of preacher, listener, and God.
Bishop Will Willimon was the bishop of the North Alabama Conference, Dean of Duke Chapel, and author of multiple books. In our conversation, Bishop Willimon talked about the appropriate length of sermons, how he speaks truth in love and humor, how the Scripture passage read shapes the style of the sermon, and the “mic drop” ending.

The Gospel is a claim about who God is and what God is up to. The Church's role in embodying the Gospel means that we meet each other in community. Intergenerational community is one of the vital aspects of a healthy church environment. What does it mean to be part of a “church family?” How can the Church serve each generation within its community, bringing people together in unity?Chris and Eddie are joined by Reverend Dr. Will Willimon, Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School and former Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. Willimon's experience as a professor has informed his perspective on the ongoing vocational questions we ask at many different stages of life. They talk about cultural idols, what the Gospel looks like in a college or university setting, and the problems and pressures that American Christianity faces.Follow Will Willimon on the web:https://willwillimon.comAging: Growing Old in the Church by Will WillimonCheck out Will Willimon's other books and publications here:https://willwillimon.com/writing/ Stanley Hauerwas and Will Willimon on the dangers of providing pastoral care Follow Will Willimon on social media:https://www.facebook.com/WillWillimonhttps://twitter.com/willimontweets
Welcome to episode thirty-three of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by well-known author and professor Dr. Will Willimon. Will served as the dean of Duke Chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke Divinity School for 20 years. He returned to Duke after serving as the bishop of the North Alabama Conference from 2004 to 2012. Will has written more than 70 books and has sold more than a million copies of them. He has written frequently for publications like Theology Today, Interpretation, Liturgy, and Christianity Today. He is editor-at-large for The Christian Century. One of the books we discuss – Pastor: The Theology and Practice of Ordained Ministry is used in dozens of seminaries throughout North America and Asia. He has taught all over the world. In addition to his three earned degrees from Wofford College, Yale Divinity School, and Emory University, Will has been granted honorary Doctorates from 13 different educational institutions. I first got introduced to Will and his work 30 years ago through his life-changing collaboration with ethicist Stanley Hauerwas entitled Resident Aliens: Life in the Christian Colony (first published in 1989). We talk about the impact of that book, as well as his writing on preaching and pastoral ministry. It is a great and thoughtful conversation. But mostly, Will just kept me laughing. So many times, since starting this podcast, I have grieved the absence of my father. He would have loved so many of these conversations. I think he would especially loved this one, and he would have had a hundred questions after it was over. This conversation with Will reminded me so much of sitting around a table listening to my dad and his ministry cronies tell funny stories, say provocative things they could only now say in the freedom of retirement, and come up with nuggets of wisdom gained the fire of decades leading a parish. Four or five times, in our conversation, Will says things I want to turn into a T-Shirt.I have cherished the chance to have conversations with leaders in my own tribe, but I have also grown to love the chance to speak to leaders from other denominations and traditions whose lives and ministries reflect the heartbeat of Jesus. This is one of those kinds of conversations. It was an honor to get to have this conversation, and it's an even greater privilege to get to offer it to you. Here's my New Creation Conversation with Dr. Will Willimon.

This week's episode was from the live Resident Aliens podcast in Durham, North Carolina. Before we hear from Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon, Tripp talks with Molly Brummett Wudel and Tim Conder from Emmaus Way. You'll hear a little bit about the story behind Emmaus Way, the work they are doing in Durham, their community hermeneutic, how they confront the challenges of church planting today, and why helping churches learn to be a part of meaningful social change and also transforming the inner life of the church is so important to their work. Then, Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon talk with Tripp about their book, Resident Aliens. They discuss the christological assertion at the heart of the text, their distaste for Pietism, the distorted character of our world for the formation of people, restoring the adventure to Christianity, the weight of one's identity given at baptism, the burden of deciding who you are, how to address issues of sexuality in the church, and the anxiety of losing culture dominance. Plus, Tripp explains why Hauerwas and Willimon have never been on the podcast before. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community.
