J. Abstract: Non-verbal cognitive ability predicts multiple important life outcomes, e.g., school and job performance. It has been associated with parieto-frontal cortical anatomy in prior studies in adult and adolescent populations, while young children have received relatively little attention. We explored the associations between cortical anatomy and non-verbal cognitive ability in 165 5-year-old participants (mean scan age 5.40 years, SD 0.13; 90 males) from the FinnBrain Birth Cohort study. T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance images were processed using FreeSurfer. Non-verbal cognitive ability was measured using the Performance Intelligence Quotient (PIQ) estimated from the Block Design and Matrix Reasoning subtests from the Wechsler Preschool And Primary Scale Of Intelligence (WPPSI-III). In vertex-wise general linear models, PIQ scores associated positively with volumes in left caudal middle frontal and right pericalcarine regions, as well as surface area in left caudal middle frontal, left inferior temporal, and right lingual regions. There were no associations between PIQ and cortical thickness. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine structural correlates of non-verbal cognitive ability in a large sample of typically developing 5-year-olds. The findings are generally in line with prior findings from older age groups. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.13.520249v1?rss=1 Authors: Kersey, A. J., Aulet, L. S., Cantlon, J. F. Abstract: Learning to map number words onto their ordinal and quantitative meanings is a key step in the acquisition of formal mathematics. Previous neuroimaging work suggests that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), and the fronto-temporal language network may be involved in representing number words. However, the contribution of early-developing numerosity representations to the acquisition of counting has not been tested in children. If regions that support numerosity processing are important for the acquisition of counting, then there should be functional overlap between numerosity representations and number word representations in the brain, before children have mastered counting. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we identified numerosity processing regions in 3- to 5-year-old children during a numerosity comparison task. To identify neural representations of number words, we measured changes in neural amplitudes while those same children listened to number words and color words and while they listened to counting and alphabet sequences. Across multiple whole-brain analyses, we found that the bilateral IPS consistently supported representations of numerosities, number words, and counting sequences. Functional overlap between numerosities and unknown counting sequences was also evident in the left IFG, and in some cases number word representations emerged in the left hemisphere fronto-temporal language network. These results provide new evidence from children that primitive numerosity processing regions of the brain interface with the language network to ground the acquisition of verbal counting. Dr. Bridget Walsh joins Sara MacIntyre, M.A., CCC-SLP to discuss recent research related to documenting and better understanding disfluency behaviors expressed by 4- and 5- year-old children who stutter and to identify whether stuttering characteristics at this age are predictive of later stuttering recovery or persistence. Dr. Walsh discusses potential future areas of research and, in general, her hopes for how learning more about the characteristics of disfluency patterns in this age group may be able to impact our work clinically in the future. Link to study in JSLHRLink to participate in Dr. Walsh’s current studyBio: Dr. Bridget Walsh is a certified speech-language pathologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University. She directs the Developmental Speech Laboratory in the Communication Arts and Sciences building. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology and Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Neuroscience from Purdue University. Translating thoughts into spoken words is a seemingly effortless ability, one easily taken for granted, yet speech production is a fascinating and remarkably complex process. Dr. Walsh's research focuses on the mechanisms underlying the development of stuttering in young children. She uses a multilevel approach combining neuroimaging, articulatory kinematics, autonomic nervous system recordings, and behavioral approaches to assess how stuttering emerges in young children, and to answer critical questions about why many young children recover from early stuttering while others persist and develop a lifelong chronic condition. For feedback/ episode suggestions, email Sara: smacintyre@stutteringhelp.org

Abstract: In young adults, memory consolidation during sleep is supported by a time-coordinated interplay of sleep spindles and slow oscillations. However, given tremendous developmental changes in sleep spindle and slow oscillation morphology, it remains elusive whether the same mechanisms as identified in young adults are comparably functional across childhood. Here, we characterise slow and fast sleep spindles and their temporal coupling to slow oscillations in 24 pre-school children. Further, we ask whether slow and fast sleep spindles and their modulation during slow oscillations are similarly associated with behavioural indicators of declarative memory consolidation as suggested from adult literature. Employing a development-sensitive, individualised approach, we reliably identify an inherent, development-specific fast sleep spindle type, though nested in the adult-like slow sleep spindle frequency range, along with a dominant slow sleep spindle type. Further, we provide evidence for the modulation of fast sleep spindles during slow oscillations, already in pre-school children. However, the temporal coordination between fast sleep spindles and slow oscillations is weaker and less precise than expected from adult research. While we do not find evidence for a critical contribution of the pattern of fast sleep spindle modulation during slow oscillations for memory consolidation, crucially, both inherent slow and fast sleep spindles separately are differentially related to sleep-associated consolidation of items of varying quality. While a higher number of slow sleep spindles is associated with stronger maintenance of medium-quality memories, more fast sleep spindles are linked to higher gain of low-quality items. Our results provide evidence for two functionally relevant inherent sleep spindle types in pre-school children despite not fully matured sleep spindle - slow oscillation coupling. Background: According to Ulrich's psychoevolutionary theory, contact with green environments mitigates stress by activating the parasympathetic system, (specifically, by decreasing blood pressure (BP)). Experimental studies have confirmed this biological effect. However, greenness effects on BP have not yet been explored using an observational study design. We assessed whether surrounding residential greenness is associated with BP in 10 year-old German children. Methods: Systolic and diastolic BPs were assessed in 10 year-old children residing in the Munich and Wesel study areas of the German GINIplus and LISAplus birth cohorts. Complete exposure, outcome and covariate data were available for 2,078 children. Residential surrounding greenness was defined as the mean of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values, derived from Landsat 5 TM satellite images, in circular 500-m buffers around current home addresses of participants. Generalized additive models assessed pooled and area-specific associations between BP and residential greenness categorized into area-specific tertiles. Results: In the pooled adjusted model, the systolic BP of children living at residences with low and moderate greenness was 0.90 +/- 0.50 mmHg (p-value = 0.073) and 1.23 +/- 0.50 mmHg (p-value = 0.014) higher, respectively, than the systolic BP of children living in areas of high greenness. Similarly, the diastolic BP of children living in areas with low and moderate greenness was 0.80 +/- 0.38 mmHg (p-value = 0.033) and 0.96 +/- 0.38 mmHg (p-value = 0.011) higher, respectively, than children living in areas with high greenness. These associations were not influenced by environmental stressors (temperature, air pollution, noise annoyance, altitude and urbanisation level). When stratified by study area, associations were significant among children residing in the urbanised Munich area but null for those in the rural Wesel area. Conclusions: Lower residential greenness was positively associated with higher BP in 10 year-old children living in an urbanised area. Further studies varying in participants' age, geographical area and urbanisation level are required.

Celebrate Moon Day with Award-Winning Illustrated Childrens Book (GRAND RAPIDS) Storytellers for centuries have told exciting and imaginative stories of the moon from ancient tales to space exploration and aliens attacking from the unknown, which is why people landing on the moon for the first time was such a monumental moment for all of mankind. Moon day is celebrated every year on July 20 to commemorate this exciting event. For many cultures the stars, moon and planets play an important role in their day-to-day lives. Thousands of Native American stories have been written about the moon, including many that cover relevant topics that exist today like bullying. Nearly 75 percent of U.S. students will eventually fall victim to bullying done by acquaintances, classmates, or even kids from across the country, but no matter where they are from they can seriously damage the victims self-confidence. An award-winning illustrated childrens storybook by Janet Heller, How the Moon Regained Her Shape (Sylvan Dell Publishing), is a tool that allows parents and educators to discuss bullying with children. Influenced by Native American legends, Hellers story portrays a full moon who shrinks due to bullying. Through the book, bullied children learn how to rebuild their self-esteem. How the Moon Regained Its Shape is a favorite in the childrens fiction category, having recently won a Childrens Choices award for 2007 as well as the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award in the category of Interior Design--Children's/Young Adult. Most recently, the book won a Gold Medal in the Moonbeam Children's Book Award competition for a Picture Book for 4- to 8-Year-Old Children. Janet Heller was born and raised in Milwaukee and currently teaches for the English and Womens Studies Departments at Western Michigan University. Heller has a Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago. Many media outlets have published Hellers works that include 2 books, 38 literary articles, 150 poems and numerous reviews. She is a member of the Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators and is President of the Michigan College English Association. How the Moon Regained Her Shape also won a Book Sense Pick in 2006.
