Many craft distilleries that came to life in the early 2010's are marking their 10th anniversaries, and this weekend, the folks at Ironroot Republic Distilling in Denison, Texas celebrated their anniversary. The Likarish family founded Ironroot Republic after Robert Likarish decided that he didn't want to practice law in his final year of law school, and his brother Jonathan gave up a career designing medical equipment to become Ironroot Republic's head distiller and blender. We'll talk with Jonathan Likarish on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Diageo opens a distillery in China, while an Indian distiller plans to open a distillery in Scotland.

Texas is booming as a whiskey region, with distilleries all over the Lone Star State. That history only goes back about 15 years, when pioneers like Balcones Distilling and Garrison Brothers started out. During the recent 15th anniversary celebrations at Balcones, Texas Whiskey Festival co-founder Jake Clements moderated a panel (and tasting) on the first 15 years of Texas whiskey. We're bringing you that discussion this week on WhiskyCast In-Depth, with panelists Jared Himstedt of Balcones, Dan Garrison of Garrison Brothers, Ironroot Republic's Robert Likarish, and Ty Phelps of Andalusia Whiskey. In the news, The Lakes Distillery in England is being sold, while Edrington is selling off its Noble Oak American Whiskey brand.

Ready to take a deep dive into a very unique Texas distillery? Back in March of 2020, I sat down with Robert Likarish of Ironroot to talk about what got his family involved in whiskey, their inspiration - a man named T.V. Munson who was known as The Grape Man of Texas, Cognac, shoo fly flasks, pot stills, that cheese note in whiskey, and the story behind Texas Legation and the Jim Bowie still. Plus I will taste several whiskeys including a peated corn whiskey and Irish style whiskey and all from Denison, TX.

What does a microscopic North American aphid have to do with scotch and Texas whisk(e)y? Quite it bit it seems. And a man name T.V. Munson is the common denominator. From his home in Denison, Texas, Thomas Volney Munson was summoned to save the Cognac region of France from a vine damaging insect called Phylloxera. And his work would inspire two brothers who would build their distillery and name it in honor of their local hero - a hero that the Cognac region still reveres today.
Hear the unique story of IronRoot Republic and the Likerish family's journey to becoming #1 in the world. Distilled locally in Denison, Texas; Robert has a lot of insight to how they got exactly where they are.

A few weeks ago Whisky Magazine named Ironroot Republic Distillery the world's best bourbon. This came as a shock to many people...not the least of which was the Likarish family who own and operate the distillery. In this episode I talk with Robert Likarish about how this unlikely event came to be, how the judging was done, and address some of the roomers and accusations that doubters have launched since the announcement of the award. We discuss that Kentucky bourbon will always be king, but that the whiskey world is changing and awards like this help bring to light some smaller producers that might not have ever been on the average consumer's radar. We discuss all this while sipping an EH Taylor Barrel Proof to pay homage to bourbon's roots. You won't want to miss this one. Please subscribe and leave a review!

Liquor is quicker, indeed. Imbibe five different whiskies with Tiney, Laura and Robert Likarish of Ironroot Republic Distillery.
Tiney and Laura welcome Robert Likarish, co-founder and distiller at Ironroot Republic Distillery, into the studio to chat about two not-so-distant relatives of beer and wine: whiskey and brandy.
The Likarish family opened Ironroot Republic Distillery in Denison, Texas in 2013. Brothers Jonathan and Robert Likarish handle the distilling, while their mother Marcia serves as distillery manager. Even though they've only been open for four years, they've collaborated to make several award-winning whiskies, including the Texas Legation Bourbon for Berry Bros. & Rudd in London. We sat down for a chat in the tasting room at Reserve 101 in Houston for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Chivas Brothers workers in Scotland are preparing for a one-day strike next Monday after rejecting a second contract offer, while Douglas Laing & Co. has unveiled plans for a distillery of its own in Glasgow and Alltech's Dr. Pearse Lyons has finally opened his new distillery in Dublin. We'll have some of your whisky bucket list items and tasting notes for two Indian single malts, too!
