Part One: In 1836 Mexico had won its independence from Spain and was being ruled by a dictator named Santa Anna, who had a large army and used it mercilessly to hold on to his power. His biggest threat was an area we now call Texas, where both Americans and Mexican Tejanos who sought freedom were gathering and offering the promise of land to those who would fight to create a new republic called Texas. Men like Jim Bowie, William Travis, and Davey Crockett believed that the fight was worth their lives- and March of 1836 found them defending an old mission called The Alamo. This is their story and the story of the defenders, who came from all over the country- up until the day of the major attack. In Part Two we cover the fall of the Alamo, the victory at San Jacinto, and the ghosts that still haunt the Alamo and the town of San Antonio, Learn more about your ad choices. On May 31, 1783, a band of Mescalero Apaches killed a man named Fernando Veramendi near the presidio of San Juan Bautista in Coahuila. Veramendi and the Veramendi family played an important part in the early history of Texas and of San Antonio. A San Antonio businessman and alderman, Veramendi was only about forty years old on May 31, 1783 when he was away from home on a business trip to Mexico City when he found himself at the mercy of the Apache raiders. Fernando had been born in Pamplona, Spain in either 1743 or 1744 and left Spain to practice his merchant trade in New Spain in search of success and wealth. He was in La Bahia, Texas by 1770 and his business occasionally required him to visit San Antonio, where he met and married married Doña María Josefa Granados on April 17, 1776. Her family were one of the famous Canary Islander settler families that had been brought to Texas 1731 to boost settlement of Texas.  After his marriage, his business thrived in San Antonio-he ran a store, loaned out money, and purchased large tracts of land. As his success grew, he gained the wealth to build a wonderful house on Soledad Street. This home became known as the Veramendi Palace.  His success made him a leader in community affairs. Veramendi was an alderman of the ayuntamiento in 1779 and in the year he died, 1783, he was elected senior alderman. His son, Juan Martin de Veramendi, was 4 and a half when his father died. He carried on in his father's successes and was elected vice governor of Coahuila y Texas in 1830 and was governor from 1832 to 1833. Fernando's granddaughter and Juan Martin's daughter, Ursala Maria married the notorious Texas legend Jim Bowie of Alamo fame in 1831, but sadly Juan Martin de Veramendi, wife Josefa, and Ursala Bowie died of cholera in 1833. As an added note, Ben Milam died in 1835 just outside or just inside the Veramendi house and he was first buried on the house's grounds before being reinterred elsewhere. Remember The Alamo (...sorry; we had to) -- 2004's "featureless sphere of re-consideration" of one of the country's most notorious battles starring Dennis Quaid as Sam Houston? If you do, our condolences, although despite a bloated runtime, racist music cues, a script that makes the dad from The Conjuring recycle cannonballs, and a misapprehension of what's actually still interesting about this chapter of history, we didn't end up with a super-low overall rating. DQ, however, doesn't seem to know how to play this particular C-plus person, and his reverting to Sling Blade voice in scenes with Billy Bob Thornton is a choice that doesn't work out for him. In Part Two we cover the fall of the Alamo, the victory at San Jacinto, and the ghosts that still haunt the Alamo and the town of San Antonio, ANDROID USERS- 1001 Radio Days right here at Google Podcasts FREE: https://podcasts.google.com/search/1001%20radio%20days 1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales at Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vQURMNzU3MzM0Mjg0NQ== 1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries at Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/search/1001%20heroes 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories (& Tales from Arthur Conan Doyle) https://podcasts.google.com/search/1001%20sherlock%20holmes 1001 Ghost Stories & Tales of the Macabre on Spotify: https://podcasts.google.com/search/1001%20ghost%20stories 1001 Stories for the Road on Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/search/1001%20stories%20for%20the%20road Enjoy 1001 Greatest Love Stories on Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/search/1001%20greatest%20love%20stories 1001 History's Best Storytellers: (author interviews) on Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/show/1001-historys-best-storytellers APPLE USERS Catch 1001 Heroes on any Apple Device here (Free): https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-heroes-legends-histories-mysteries-podcast/id956154836?mt=2  Catch 1001 CLASSIC SHORT STORIES at Apple Podcast App Now: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-classic-short-stories-tales/id1078098622 Catch 1001 Stories for the Road at Apple Podcast now:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-stories-for-the-road/id1227478901 NEW Enjoy 1001 Greatest Love Stories on Apple Devices here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-greatest-love-stories/id1485751552 Catch 1001 RADIO DAYS now at Apple iTunes!  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-radio-days/id1405045413?mt=2 NEW 1001 Ghost Stories & Tales of the Macabre is now playing at Apple Podcasts! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-ghost-stories-tales-of-the-macabre/id1516332327 NEW Enjoy 1001 History's Best Storytellers (Interviews) on Apple Devices here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-historys-best-storytellers/id1483649026 NEW Enjoy 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories and The Best of Arthur Conan Doyle https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-sherlock-holmes-stories-best-sir-arthur-conan/id1534427618 Get all of our shows at one website: https://.1001storiespodcast.com REVIEWS NEEDED . When fighting began between the rich land owners from Spain and the Mexican farmers like her own father, Andrea's family moved to Texas which was then part of Mexico. Andrea was only nine years old when she made a promise to herself to always help anyone fighting for their freedom no matter how dangerous it might be for her. As the years past, the people of Texas decided they wanted to be free from Mexico, and even though Andrea was Mexican, she loved Texas and wanted to help the Texans. She became friends with people like Sam Houston, William Travis, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie who were very important names in the history of Texas. When they heard that Mexican soldiers were coming into San Antonio ready to fight, Andrea went into the Alamo with the Texans ready to help out in any way she could. It was there that Jim Bowie became very sick. She did everything she could to care for him. Then fighting broke out all around her, and she became very sad to see all the people who died at the Alamo. But that just made Andrea Castañón decide then and there to spend the rest of her life helping others. And that's exactly what she did. She lived to be a hundred thirteen years old and she was a HERO. That's what I know about the beginning of This Hero, and I know that YOU Can Be a Hero TOO! Dear Parents, After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at http://www.thecharacternetwork.org/Testimonials (www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials) This program, The Beginning of a Famous Hero™ is used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!™ in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment. These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it's just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. Joe's Alamo Unsung by Lewis E. CookRemember the Alamo! is a slogan known worldwide for courage in battle against overwhelming odds. In that historic stand less than two hundred volunteers fought against five thousand soldiers for thirteen days. According to Joe, the only male survivor, all races and religions fought and died there. Lead by William Travis, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett the Alamo defenders bravely made the ultimate sacrifice while suffering ever darkening days.Joe was severely wounded during the massacre but allowed to live because he spoke Spanish and could translate the terrifying words of the army general who relentlessly attacked the Alamo. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna wanted the Alamo to become symbolic of hopelessness and certain death for anyone that opposed his reign of terror. That did not happen due to efforts of Susana Dickinson and Joe, a slave. This novel is inclusive of all races and religions just as Joe described. Its characters reflect the real personalities of Alamo defenders. It includes recently discovered facts about William Travis, Joe, Susana Dickinson, Davy Crockett and John, who was pitifully listed among the dead only as a black boy.53rd Annual WorldFest 2020 Remi Award WinnerI was a science major, premed (biology and chemistry) at the University of Arkansas. After arriving in Texas and awaiting my bar results I got a job teaching biology, chemistry, eighth grade science and one seventh grade Texas history class. Full disclosure that I knew no Texas history got no sympathy and no class exchanges from the science department chairman who shrugged saying, “Stay a chapter ahead of them.” That didn't work. One of the seventh grader's dad taught American History at the University of Houston and this kid knew his stuff. His questions were sharp and he took pride in returning with challenging corrections and insights. I was forced to read the complete Texas, My Texas text book and went to the Alamo over Thanksgiving. Damn if I didn't find it interesting. So, this account of the Alamo began with my reading a one line quote from Joe, William Travis' slave - the only male survivor of the Alamo. Joe said, “There were many different races and religions there.” Joe was severely wounded and probably allowed to live only because he spoke Spanish. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna wanted his massive human slaughters at the Alamo and Goliad to symbolize hopelessness and certain death to all who stood against his mighty army. Instead ‘Remember the Alamo' has come to symbolize bravery and the resolve of a few to stand firmly against overwhelming odds in battle worldwide. Before the course ended my learned student had one last inquiry. Who first said ‘Remember the Alamo? Was it the Mexican General Santa Anna, Joe Travis, Susanna Dickinson or General Sam Houston? I wondered, too, how those words became so meaningful without any recognition to the slogan's originator.Joe, Susanna Dickinson, Angelina (her toddler), Emily (The Yellow Rose of Texas), William Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and other whites, blacks, Hispanics, women, teenagers, and foreigners from most religions are due a hefty level of respect for their sacrifices at the Alamo and for Texas. As Troy Duane Smith said, ‘The pursuant of truth, not facts, is the business of fiction.” This fictional account, filled with humor and sarcasm, attempts to recognize them all with that last inquiry firmly in mind. This novel is my well-reasoned and researched answer. — Lewis E. On this episode of The Flask At Hand Podcast it is once again highland scotch time, only this time its a wonderfully affordable bottle from Trader Joe's. If you don't have a Trader Joe's store near you go online and order some of this whisky! It's simply called Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 10 years old but is has the Alexander Murray name on it. Delicious AND cheap, which are never used in the same sentence but in this case very much apply here. After the whisky review we mount our horses, swing by Jim Bowie's and learn about this crazy man and why the well known knife was named after him. Then Outlaw Country! whooo! Johnny Cash, Hank Williams JR, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and how they turned Nashville upside down with their new style of country music. Finally the modern day Robin Hood: Stephen Jackley and the bank heists and bookies robberies that gave this 20 something year old the famous nick name as he stole money from the "Man" and went around handing stacks of cash to homeless people. So get ready for another exciting episode and sip, listen, learn and laugh with us! As always, thanks for listening. Cheers! Most Americans know the story of the Battle of the Alamo as the iconic stand led by Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, William Barret Travis, and other rebels who gallantly fought for independence from Mexico, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war. It is an origin story that has become the beating heart of Texas exceptionalism. The legend is also an American touchstone, a symbol of national resolve. But our next guest, Chris Tomlinson, says that version of events owes more to fantasy than reality. The new book "Forget The Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth" takes a look at the Alamo myth, its creation and its stubborn endurance—from the historic battle to the present day. Chris Tomlinson is a columnist for the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News and the author of the New York Times-bestselling "Tomlinson Hill" about his family's slave-owning history in Texas.

In this much anticipated episode we begin our examination of Jim Bowie – son of three countries and leading figure in the conflict at the Alamo.   From their roots in the Royal Court of Scotland to the revolutionary United States, the Bowies stood out from their contemporaries as iconoclasts and opportunists. We dig deeper into the time-honored American tradition of squatting, and its evolution into the equally relevant tradition of land speculation. Learn how generations of Bowie's “improved” said land, earning massive grants of capital for the sweat off their brows, and considerably less for the sweat off those 4-8 people who were forced into working for them. Finally, when the U.S. Congress prohibits the import of slaves, we see what roguish schemes a couple of good ol' boys who are looking to make some easy money come up with.   OUTLAW COUNTRY!!!   Sources:   Davis, William C. Miller is joined by Michael Walsh to discuss his book, 'Last Stands.' About the book- Last Stands: Why Men Fight When All Is Lost by Michael Walsh"A philosophical and spiritual defense of the premodern world, of the tragic view, of physical courage, and of masculinity and self-sacrifice in an age when those ancient virtues are too often caricatured and dismissed."―Victor Davis HansonAward-winning author Michael Walsh celebrates the masculine attributes of heroism that forged American civilization and Western culture by exploring historical battles in which soldiers chose death over dishonor in Last Stands: Why Men Fight When All Is Lost.In our contemporary era, men are increasingly denied their heritage as warriors. A survival instinct that’s part of the human condition, the drive to wage war is natural. Without war, the United States would not exist. The technology that has eased manual labor, extended lifespans, and become an integral part of our lives and culture has often evolved from wartime scientific advancements. War is necessary to defend the social and political principles that define the virtues and freedoms of America and other Western nations. We should not be ashamed of the heroes who sacrificed their lives to build a better world. We should be honoring them. The son of a Korean War veteran of the Inchon landing and the battle of the Chosin Reservoir with the U.S. Marine Corps, Michael Walsh knows all about heroism, valor, and the call of duty that requires men to fight for something greater than themselves to protect their families, fellow countrymen, and most of all their fellow soldiers. In Last Stands, Walsh reveals the causes and outcomes of more than a dozen battles in which a small fighting force refused to surrender to a far larger force, often dying to the last man. From the Spartans’ defiance at Thermopylae and Roland’s epic defense of Charlemagne’s rear guard at Ronceveaux Pass, through Santa Anna’s siege of the Alamo defended by Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie to the skirmish at Little Big Horn between Crazy Horse’s Sioux nation and George Armstrong Custer’s Seventh Calvary, to the Soviets’ titanic struggle against the German Wehrmacht at Stalingrad, and more, Walsh reminds us all of the debt we owe to heroes willing to risk their lives against overwhelming odds―and how these sacrifices and battles are not only a part of military history but our common civilizational heritage.
