The whiskey world is changing—and not quietly. In this episode, we dive headfirst into two forces shaping the future of the industry. First, the growing push to legalize home distilling in the U.S., and what that could mean for innovation, craftsmanship, and the next generation of distillers. Is this a return to whiskey's roots…or a disruption the big players aren't ready for? Then, we turn to the corporate side of the fight. Rumors are swirling around Sazerac Company potentially setting its sights on Brown-Forman—a move that could reshape the power structure of the whiskey world overnight. What would this mean for legacy brands, market competition, and the soul of the industry? From grassroots distillers to billion-dollar boardrooms, this episode breaks down the tension between tradition, control, and the freedom to create. The future of whiskey isn't set in stone—and the fight is already underway.Patreon.com/offtopicwhiskeyBadmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==The "fight for the future of whiskey" is not a single battle, but a complex intersection of market corrections, regulatory disputes, and shifting consumer values. As of 2026, the industry is transitioning from a decade of "hyper-expansion" to an era defined by maturity and transparency.1.The "Glut" vs. Disciplined ProductionA major internal conflict exists between maintaining high prices and managing a massive surplus of aging stock.Inventory Crisis: In Kentucky alone, aging barrels have reached approximately 16.1 million, a potential oversupply of 300% compared to current demand.Strategic Pauses: To prevent a total market collapse, major producers like Jim Beam and Diageo (owners of Balcones and George Dickel) have suspended or slowed production through 2026 to let inventories normalize.De-premiumization: Experts note a reversal of the two-decade "trading up" trend. Consumers are becoming skeptical of $1,000+ "vanity bottles" and are returning to the $30–$70 price range for better value.2. The Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) ShowdownA significant legal and regulatory fight is occurring over how whiskey reaches the consumer.Three-Tier System: Many state legislatures are fighting to protect the traditional three-tier system (producer → wholesaler → retailer) to secure tax revenue and maintain oversight.Shipping Rights: Craft distillers are lobbying for the right to ship directly to doorsteps, arguing it is essential for survival in a market where large distributors often favor legacy brands.3. Global Trade and Retaliatory TariffsWhiskey has become a primary weapon in international trade disputes, leading to what some call a "Tariff War".Retaliatory Barriers: Major markets like Canada and the EU have imposed significant tariffs on American whiskey. In 2025, some Canadian retailers even pulled American bottles from shelves entirely, replacing them with "Buy Canadian" signs. The Pivot to India: With Western markets slowing, the industry is fighting for access to India, the world's largest whiskey market by volume. Producers are lobbying for lower tariffs (currently at 100% for U.S. bourbon) to tap into India's massive rising middle class.4. Sustainability and AuthenticityA cultural "fight" is emerging as brands compete for younger, "mindful" drinkers.Terroir & Ingredients: Distillers like Westland are focusing on Pacific Northwest peat and heirloom grains to prove provenance.Eco-Mandates: Sustainability is becoming a market requirement rather than a choice. Brands like Bruichladdich and Glenmorangie are leading shifts toward renewable energy and water conservation to attract eco-conscious Gen Z and Millennial buyers.Transparency: The "new luxury" is information. Brands that publish mash bills, fermentation choices, and barrel details are winning loyalty over those relying on marketing "hype".

In “Trade, Taste, and the Evolving Tale of Texas Whiskey,” Gravy reporter Evan Stern visits the Lone Star State to get a taste of a growing movement: Texas whiskey. Given the importance of saloons in cowboy culture and western mythology, one might think Texas whiskey has a long and storied history. But though Texans have always had a fondness for the demon drink, as a legal industry, Texas whiskey is barely even twenty years old. Despite this youth, however, its growth has been explosive. While as recently as 2010, the state claimed a mere two whiskey distilleries, that number now hovers around sixty and is growing. Yet as makers like Still Austin, Balcones, and Garrison Brothers have garnered awards and drawn national attention, its identity is still being discovered and remains challenging to define. In an increasingly saturated market, one also can't help but wonder: Is Texas whiskey on the cusp of something big, or will it bust? Through visits to two “grain to glass” distilleries, Stern learns of the industry's origins from Dan Garrison. The first licensed whiskey maker in modern Texas, Garrison tells of the challenges he faced aging bourbon in the torrid Hill Country and how his process has matured since his days as an early pioneer. Gravy also hears about the challenges regional distillers have faced in distinguishing their brands in a saturated market from sommelier Daniel Whittington, while Kentucky-based spirits author Fred Minnick argues that Texans' openness to experimentation has helped shift the flavor narrative of American whiskey. Illustrating this is John Evans who, in a move that could be considered unorthodox, has chosen to use oats in a mash bill he developed himself. A fifth-generation farmer, he opened Wilson Valley Mercantile on his family's historic property after thinking: “Why not make corn worth more by selling it as whiskey?” Featuring spirits distilled from grains raised entirely onsite, he shares his journey as an independent upstart. In these conversations, Gravy asks questions about process and flavor, while exploring how Texas's emergence reflects the American craft movement and pondering what its future could mean for the drinking world as a whole. Hola!

This is a unique look at whiskey from another lens. To almost see it in a different light. I need alot of feed back on this. And by all means i hope you enjoy. KYSUThe new frontier of whiskey: Kick off the segment by discussing the recent formal recognition of American single malt by the TTB. As of January 19, 2025, it is an official whiskey category. This is a huge milestone for American distilling and an exciting time to be exploring these whiskies.A "wild west" of flavor: One of the most exciting things about American single malt is the variety of flavors. Unlike the strict rules of Scotch, American distillers have been free to experiment with different cask types, wood smoke (like mesquite), and aging locations, leading to a much more diverse flavor profile. The barrel difference: American single malts are not limited to the used barrels required for Scotch. They can be aged in new charred oak, used bourbon barrels, or even experimental casks like port, sherry, or wine. Ask your co-hosts how this freedom affects the flavor profile and what their favorite aging methods are.Founding fathers of American single malt: Pay homage to the trailblazers who started it all. Mention Steve McCarthy of Clear Creek Distillery in Oregon, who is widely credited with producing the first American single malt back in 1996. Other influential distilleries to highlight include Westland and Stranahan's.Fun facts and triviaMore than Scotland: There are over 200 distilleries in the U.S. producing some form of single malt, which is more than in all of Scotland.Speed-aging in America: Due to the more dramatic temperature swings across the country, American single malts can mature more quickly than their Scottish counterparts. The climate, whether hot and dry in Texas or humid in Virginia, has a significant impact on how the whisky tastes.Mesquite-smoked whiskey: While peat is the traditional smoke source for Scotch, some American single malt producers, like Santa Fe Spirits, use local ingredients. They use mesquite wood to smoke their Colkegan Single Malt, creating a distinct, barbecue-like flavor.Single versus blended: Clarify the "single" in American single malt. It means the whiskey was distilled entirely at one U.S. distillery, unlike a blended whiskey, which mixes whiskeys from different distilleries.Tasting notes and flavor comparisonsSide-by-side with Scotch: A great segment idea is to do a blind tasting of an American single malt and a Scotch single malt. Discuss the differences, such as the American's potential notes of caramel and vanilla from new oak versus a Scotch's more subtle oak influence. The impact of a hot climate: Talk about American single malts from different regions. For example, a whisky from Texas (like Balcones) might offer a richer, bolder flavor due to the intense heat, while one from the cooler Pacific Northwest (like Westland) might taste more like a classic Scotch. The barley difference: The type of barley used also matters. Some distillers use specific varieties like Golden Promise or heirloom barley, contributing distinct character. For instance, you can mention New Riff Distillery's use of multiple barley mash bills for their sour mash single malt. The barrel finish: Discuss the wide variety of cask finishes. American single malts can have unique notes from being finished in rum, wine, or sherry barrels. Virginia Distillery Co. is known for its "Courage & Conviction" Double Cask Reserve, aged in bourbon and red wine casks.Debate and discussion topicsAmerican terroir: Ask your co-hosts whether they believe American single malt exhibits a true "terroir" or sense of place. Do they think the location of the distillery and ingredients creates a unique regional style, or is it more about the distiller's techniques?

Boulder Spirits (Vapor Distillery in Boulder CO) WF0068 The state of Colorado has no shortage of amazing distilleries, so I had a tough choice when kicking the "Great 48 Tour" back into gear. One of my favorite visits when I made my way here two years ago was Boulder Spirits. Founder Alastair Brogan walked me all around the place and we have a great conversation about all things single malt, Bourbon, Scotland, and making whiskey in the Rockies. Since we haven't featured him on the podcast, today is the day. Join me as we chat about what drew him to America, having a still and needing a distillery, starting with Bourbon, getting the first 10 year whiskey ready, and the new experience Boulder Spirits brought to the center of town. Members of the Speakeasy and Club 1897 will also hear extended conversations about how Forsyths in Scotland leaned on their experience with Balcones in designing the still, and aging whiskey in the high pressure of a mile high zone. A wonderfully geeky conversation is had between Joshua, Yoni Miller (SCN's in-house Cigar Czar/Tobacco Trouble-Maker/Meme-Meiser) and Terence Reilly of Aganorsa Leaf surrounding the ins and outs of cigar production, Aganorsa Leaf, and the next SCN cigar project with them using the Single Cask Nation ex-Balcones peated cask. Lots of fun conversation to be had! NOTE: Sadly, the video file from the conversation was lost in transfer so you won't be able to see any of the beautiful faces for this episode. As China continues to corner the market for rare earths, they try to harm other economies and gain bargining power for their domestic plans. Whiskey is more than just a drink; in fact, the word “whiskey” derives from the Gaelic phrase uisge beatha, meaning “water of life.” In today's podcast episode, NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Jared Himstedt and Gabe RiCharde of Balcones Distilling to discuss the duo's philosophy on crafting fine whiskey in Waco, Texas. Key Points From This Episode:What “Balcones” means and how it's relevant to Texas and Balcones DistillingChallenges that come with high standards and keeping a business localHow Jared and Gabe use raw ingredients as tools for artistic expressionWhere Balcones falls on the spectrum between tradition, rebellion, and innovationThe significance of Texas to Balcones Distilling and the American Single Malt MovementProduct development at Balcones and their sometimes surprising sources of inspirationWhy artists shouldn't rely on critical acclaim, external validation, or market feedbackInsight into Gabe's journey from geologist to spirits manager at BalconesJared's deeply personal path from ceramicist and social worker to whiskey distillerWhy Balcones works with artists to support the visual artsFor more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/balcones-distilling
Check out what Darrell has been up to in Costa Rica. Diving, monkeys, Zip Lining, etc. Darrell is having the Rocky Patel Decade with the Balcones Lineage and Bill is having a Foundation Cigars The Wise Man with Angostura Caribbean Rum.
The first in a series of interviews held in Texas during an SCN launch features Jason sitting down with Emma Crandall & Gabe RiCharde of Balcones Distilling. The trio discuss distilling and blending practices, basically all things Balcones, but touch on the category and future of American Single Malt writ large. This episode is paired quite well with an SCN release of Balcones -- a massively delicious single malt made exclusively from the legendary Golden Promise barley. Why not open your bottle and enjoy this episode with a generous pour? Don't have a bottle yet? Let's remedy that: https://bit.ly/3X9Q6QD ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour (of the aforementioned SCN Balcones), and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Texas is booming as a whiskey region, with distilleries all over the Lone Star State. That history only goes back about 15 years, when pioneers like Balcones Distilling and Garrison Brothers started out. During the recent 15th anniversary celebrations at Balcones, Texas Whiskey Festival co-founder Jake Clements moderated a panel (and tasting) on the first 15 years of Texas whiskey. We're bringing you that discussion this week on WhiskyCast In-Depth, with panelists Jared Himstedt of Balcones, Dan Garrison of Garrison Brothers, Ironroot Republic's Robert Likarish, and Ty Phelps of Andalusia Whiskey. In the news, The Lakes Distillery in England is being sold, while Edrington is selling off its Noble Oak American Whiskey brand.
This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes listeners on a ride to Hutto, Texas and chats with Jimmy Pierce, Master Hatter and Owner, of Jimmy Pierce Designs. The Big Man visits with one of his new sponsors, who just happens to be a Master Hatter, and who makes beautiful cowboy hats. Jimmy also loves whiskey so these two sit down to talk hats and whiskey. At the end of the Episode Big Chief is fitted for his first ever custom made cowboy hat. In the first half they sip on Crowed Barrel Whiskey Company, Magnificent Beast-Jackalope, which is a Blend of two malt whiskies from Balcones and light whiskey from MGP. In the second half they sip on John J. Bowman from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery. With hints of toffee, leather and figs, it's a beautiful sipping whiskey. This ride on The Whiskey Trip showcases a craft that has almost disappeared from the American landscape, but is making a comeback. Cheers!
