Episode No. 592 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Amalia Mesa-Bains and curator Michael Duncan. The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive is presenting "Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory," the first retrospective of the pioneering Chicana artist. The exhibition includes nearly 60 works including fourteen of Mesa-Bains' major installations. It was curated by María Esther Fernández and Laura E. Pérez and is on view through July 23. The outstanding catalogue was published by the Berkeley Art Museum in association with University of California Press. Amazon and Indiebound offer it for about $50. Across a half-century, Mesa-Bains has foregrounded Chicana forms such as altares (home altars), ofrendas (offerings to the dead), descansos (roadside resting places), and capillas (home yard shrines) into contemporary art. Her work often spotlights domestic spaces and the construction of landscape in ways that highlight colonial erasure. Among the museums which have presented solo exhibitions of Mesa-Bains' work are the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Williams College Museum of Art, the Fowler Museum at UCLA, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. As promised on the program: Sandy Rodriguez on Episode No. 532. On the second segment, curator Michael Duncan discusses "Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, 1938-45," which is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through June 19. The exhibition presents a group of mostly northern New Mexico-based artists, including Raymond Jonson and Agnes Pelton, who built a spiritually-informed abstraction with a painterly language that included symbols and images drawn from the collective unconscious. The show's catalogue was published by the Crocker Art Museum and DelMonico Books. Amazon and Indiebound offer it for about $60.

When Deljit Bains stepped into her new role to lead the South Asian Health Institute in British Columbia, she knew she had a big challenge ahead of her - trying to find ways to improve health outcomes for the huge South Asian population there, which had really high rates of chronic disease. A nice neat plan had already been developed for her, where she was supposed to find volunteers to go into the community to do things like educate people, give flu shots and run exercise programs. But when she started to put the plan into action, she realized quickly that it wasn't going to work. It had been designed for a predominantly white, educated, English-speaking health care system that operated from 9 to 5 on weekdays – not a culturally rich, Punjabi-speaking, population with often low literacy rates that gathered in the evening and on weekends. If she was going to have any impact at all, she'd have to let go of old-school approaches to health promotion and adopt an innovation mindset. And that's how the Apnee Sehat Design Lab for South Asian Health started. In this episode, Deljit shares her biggest insights about leading change in an incredibly complex situation and tells us how she found a new way forward using human-centred design. You can find much more detail about the project in the evaluation report. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I think Talbir Bains is one of the most single-minded and driven people I have ever had on the show. He is also moving incredibly quickly. Since the last time I spoke to him back in 2020 his Volante Global business has grown premium substantially, found new ownership as part of the Acrisure Group and launched a Syndicate at Lloyd's. I just had to get him back to make sure we kept up with all the things that have happened in the last 24 months. And I am really glad I did, because despite the apparent whirlwind surrounding him and his fast-growing business, it is Talbir's rock-solid convictions that permeate every minute of this podcast. Volante is a business with a focus on underwriting profit that is bordering on obsession and five minutes with Talbir can leave you in no doubt that this company's uncompromising philosophy and culture originates directly from him. Talbir has also been through a life-changing personal experience since we last met and that only heightened the intensity of talking to him face to face once more I can't help thinking we could all learn an awful lot not just from listening to what Talbir has to say, but by studying precisely what he has done to position Volante as an underwriting business that is so consistently highly rated and respected by its peers and stakeholders. Of course, living and breathing underwriting discipline is far easier said than done, so listen on and see if you can get some of Talbir's passion and belief to rub off onto you. Escrow. Title. Escrow Company. Title Company. If you've ever bought or sold a home, you've heard of these terms before. If you haven't bought or sold a home, you may not have any idea of what these terms mean. Either way, these terms are often used interchangeably and can be extremely confusing for homebuyers, sellers, and first-time investors alike. Today, we are incredibly excited to host Christy Kutka and Love Bains with Chicago Title Company on the podcast. In this episode, Christy and Love talk about all things escrow - what it means, what they do, and their role in every transaction. As a homebuyer, seller, or investor, it can be difficult to understand how escrow affects your transaction; after today's episode, you should walk away with extreme clarity and confidence for your next deal. If you are looking for a rockstar escrow team to handle your next transaction (that is also investor friendly), reach out to the Kutka Team at teamkutka@ctt.com!
