Friends, Countryfolk and Citykids; lend me your ears. As we rapidly approach the century mark episode of Graventown, I was mega triple pineapple lucky to sit down with one of the most renowned, busiest, hilarious and well known music makers in all Canada direct from the wanderlusty Winnipeg, Manitoba; Romi Mayes. When she's not winning awards for her heart-stinger songs, Romi is a trailblazing business woman who runs Sure Shot Bookings which is a booking company that connects hundreds of music makers from all across Canada. She is raw, unfiltered and real; my kind of human being! We had a wicked chat and I hope your ears enjoy it as much as our brains did. Catch me in a town near you in 2025 alongside Melissa Payne, Stephen Stanley (Lowest of the Low) and many other rad artists by visiting my website to see where I'm playing. If people can hate for no reason, I can love for no reason - and I love you. Thanks for stopping by Graventown. Yer always welcome here. As a full time independent artist, you can support me by buying the Always Everthing vinyl or brand new "block heater" toque here or by joining my SUPER RAD subscription service at https://ko-fi.com/gravencanada

This weeks guest is singer/songwriter Romi Mayes (Winnipeg) But she's not introducing a tour or a new album. In 2021, she's the Senior Producer for Curbside Concerts. A company started in 2020 by Matt Masters and Amanda Burgener. They could both see, because of Covid, that artists in Canada were going to have a hard time working, gathering together, and paying the bills. Also, music fans were going to lose their live music. So they created Curbside Concerts. A safe way for musicians and audiences to get together during these many months. You chose the artist, date & time. One of their producers will work with you to make it all happen. The stage (if required), microphones, battery-powered speakers, and anything else needed will show up with your artist. Want some names? Paul Pigat. Joe Nolan. Petunia (solo). Jay Semko (N Pikes) JD Edwards (Small Glories) Ridley Bent. Matt Mayes. All safety standards are met and everyone enjoys the music. Curbside has been a success. Now in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and BC Over 100 artists have signed up. Concerts big and small have taken place. Audiences have gone away with memories to last a lifetime. Curbside Concerts have been nominated for four Western Canadian Music Awards. Impact on -Live Music -Artist Development -Music Marketing -Community Excellence We welcome the Senior Producer for Curbside Concerts – excellent singer/songwriter Romi Mayes. If you're an artist or want to be a Host – Romi has all the info.
Musician and Western Producer of Curbside Concerts ROMI MAYES talks about when she was inspired by 80's pop star Tiffany, her early days working at Winnipeg legendary hotspot The Blue Note Cafe, and where to go in Newfoundland when you want to skip The Junos. Also, Tim Hortons Is Stupid. Singer-songwriter and rock n' fuckin' roller [Romi Mayes](http://www.facebook.com/Romi-Mayes-Band-Official-Music-Page-110129255685862/) is an integral part of Winnipeg's independent music scene, and we finally have her on the podcast. It may be cold and wet outside The Roadhouse Studios, but hot blues keeps it warm inside. Keep a hot toddy, irish coffee or some other warm beverage at your side for the hour as Robert Cray, Mighty Mike Schermer, Ironing Board Sam, Zora Young & Little Mike & The Tornadoes, and Romi Mayes generate the heat that will keep us warm and dry inside our little dive. Warm and dry is definitely what you want when you're heading into another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 557th Roadhouse.

Today a visit with Romi Mayes & Micah Erenberg, who stopped in to chat about Romi’s songwriter extravaganza coming up at The Park Theatre.
We’re getting set for this year’s exciting installment of The Trout Forest Music festival, and there’s a special kickoff show at Times Change(d) tonight. Joining us live in-studio are Uncle Thirsty, Mayor Matt Allen, and Geoff Berner who plays some great new songs.

I’ve done a lot of interviews over the past 12 or 13 years, but very few as moving, interesting, and memorable as today’s chat. And it’s with a guy that we’ve talked to many times before, Scott Nolan, who called us from the snowy road on the way back home after a marathon tour with Mary Gauthier. Thursday marks the premiere of his new documentary film, Chasing a Song. Besides that, we’ve got some upcoming shows and show news, and still a bit of time for some interesting new releases.

It’s been a great year for Winnipeg music, but there’s another great disc yet to come, with the release of Roads and Roads by The JD Edwards Band. JD drops by to chat about the new disc and the upcoming CD release show. We’ve got plenty of other great local music, including previews of upcoming exciting shows by The Magnificent 7s, Scott Nolan, and The New Meanies. And, we drop a couple of new holiday classics.

You’ve got to be careful to avoid whiplash on today’s show, because we’re looking back & forth all over the place. We look back at last night’s amazing Sunset Saloon show, Jack Marks in Winnipeg, as well as the amazing work of “The Big Man” Clarence Clemons. We’ve got great new music, some that’s out already (back) and some that’s coming out soon (forth). And, it’s Jazzfest in Winnipeg, and there’s plenty of us non-jazz lovers to enjoy.

It’s Easter Sunday, so we’re celebrating with the family (Carter came along to co-host) and playing songs about the two things that Easter is all about (Jesus and food.) We’ve also got some great new music, new again music, and previews of some great upcoming shows.

T-Bar’s got some ‘splainin’ to do since he posted his wacky Top 10 list on Steel Belted Radio.com, so we grill him on that and he plays a few to try to defend himself. Luckily, our special guests came in just in time to spare him. And what guests they are, Romi Mayes and Jason Nowicki dropped by in advance of their live album recording at the West End, to play us some new songs and talk about what’s going on.
A little bit of old skool alt.country kicks off the show, before we take a listen back to some of our past Best of compilations. Great music from yesterday leads in to a little bit of the best of today.

Our favourite co-host of all drops in for a visit, as Carter is along for the ride today. Together we kick off the Christmas season, we pay tribute to one of Winnipeg’s best bands of all time, The D. Rangers, who hang up the muckbucket this week, we pay tribute to the winners at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and look at some upcoming shows and one exciting CD re-release. And, because last week’s miserable show was such a big hit with listeners, we play just a little bit more Sad Bastard Music.

Mudge goes solo again, and he starts off in typically miserable style with a set of Townes Van Zandt songs. Somehow, those sad songs only cheer him up, so we started previewing great upcoming shows (there are a bunch!), playing great new releases, and a bunch of just plain great music. Sounds great, to me!

Tonight we get our annual visit from Devin Latimer, Artistic Director of the best little festival in Canada, The Trout Forest Music Festival. He drops in with some new tunes and some details on what to expect this year in Ear Falls.
Simon & Garfunkle may not be coming to town this week, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hear some of their songs done by themselves and others. You know who is coming to town? Brock Zeman, Peter Katz, Romi Mayes, and more! We’ve also got some new, some notable, and some just plain great music.

This week we hear from a bunch of artists who made (and inspired) great music in 2009. We talked about what they're up to, but more importantly, we dedicated the show to our good friend Dietmar in Germany who is a tireless champion of the music that we love. He is an inspiration and a great help the the artists we talked to, including Leeroy Stagger, Evan Phillips, Romi Mayes, Dustin Bentall, Matt Epp, T. Nile, and more! Here's to you, Big D. Keep up the great work.

KK takes the wheel for a rare solo show, and does the unthinkable: plays 1.5 hours of great music with no ridiculous arguing. She's trying to ruin the show, I'm sure of it. Hopefully you don't get used to hearing just the best music out there, because the circus will be back in town soon. In the meantime, enjoy it with birthday wishes for Jim Bryson, and great tunes from the likes of The Weakerthans, Leeroy Stagger, Romi Mayes, Matt Mays, and much more!

We started off with a set of stellar new music that got us feelin' alright. Somehow (as these things so often do) we got off track and threw in a set of definitely non-singersongwriter hipster music. Then, we took a trip to the movies. It's Oscar night, and although I don't give a hoot about that show, I did manage to catch a couple of recent hits this weekend, The Wrestler, and Twilight, and we heard some songs inspired by those

More great upcoming shows this week?!?! What's going on in Winnipeg? This week we're treated to Justin Rutledge, Dave Lang/Carolyn Mark, Jill Barber, and the long awaited Romi Mayes/Gurf Morlix show! Even with all of that on our minds, we still found time for some great new music.

A special pre-recorded segment of Steel Belted Free Range Radio featuring Romi Mayes & Gurf Morlix. Romi is one of the brightest stars on the horizon in Winnipeg and beyond. Her last album Sweet Something Steady catapulted her from local fave to international darling, and that has a lot to do with the legendary producer she hired to shape the album. I've been following Gurf Morlix for years, ever since I noticed that his name appeared on many of my favourite albums. Since then, I discovered that he's more than just a great producer, he's a great musician as well. I was lucky enough to meet him and get to know him a bit when Romi first brought him to town a couple of years ago, and I found out then that he's a very intelligent, very personable, totally interesting guy as well. At that time we were treated to a couple of live performances of songs that were later released on what is by far his greatest accomplishment as a singer/songwriter, Diamonds to Dust. I was knocked out then, because even though I was such a fan and so familiar with his talent and track record, I underestimated him as a singer/songwriter. Never again, I thought. Well, I was expecting great things, but when he came in late Monday night and played me the first song from his upcoming CD, Last Exit to Happyland, I knew he'd raised the bar that much higher. That powerful performance alone would have made me put him way up high on my list of all time favourite in-studio guests. But that's not all he did. Oh no. Just wait until you hear him do his version of Blaze Foley's classic "Cold Cold World." Quite honestly, perhaps my favourite musical moment on air so far.
I couldn't believe it when I saw R.E.M. on Austin City Limits this week. They're not roots music! Or are they? I figured if they're good enough for ACL, darn it, they're good enough for us too. Plus, they're the only members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that I've met, and I always like to brag about that. It seems that some pretty folky singer/songwriters are fans too, because not only did we hear a few R.E.M. originals and collaborators, but we heard some folky covers of their stuff as well. All of this got me in the mood for some good old fashioned pop music. Although I'm an old folky now, I was raised on a steady diet of pop music, so I never pass up the chance to bop along to some hooks & melodies, so some classic pop nuggets. But we can't get away without some folk & roots, and that came in honour of our friends at Candor, who are holding their "wedding" social this week to raise money for a new store/venue. We played just some of the great artists lending a hand to the worthwhile cause.

Too many themes to fit into two hours, we super-sized the show today and took over for Bluegrass Guy who took the holiday off, pushing the show to three hours, and I still ran out of time! First up, it would be inappropriate not to recognize Remembrance Day by playing some songs about soldiers & war, but more importantly, we played some songs about peace. Coming up next weekend some Winnipeg all-stars pay tribute to an under-appreciated Canadian songwriter/musician legend, David Essig. Essig will be in town to play alongside The D. Rangers, Romi Mayes, and more as they launch the homegrown Essig tribute record, Beverley Street on Saturday. So, a brief lesson in all things Essig with some songs he's played on, produced, and written. November 12 is Neil Young's birthday, and our friends at the High & Lonesome Club have been celebrating in style with a weeekend of amazing Neil Young music in Neilfest, and we relived some of it with our own set of Neil classics and covers.
