From Post Animal to Bad Bunny: June's Musical Landscape

Matt and Sam are back with their June new music mix, where nostalgia meets innovation in unexpected ways. The blurring of entertainment worlds takes center stage as we discover Post Animal's "Pie in the Sky," featuring Stranger Things actor Joe Keery who returned to his musical roots after the show's filming wrapped. This happy rock anthem sits alongside Maiah Mancer's haunting "sirencore" vocals on "With a Smile," creating a compelling contrast that showcases music's boundless versatility. Our mix navigates emotional depths through Ben Kweller's heartbreakingly hopeful "Oh Dorian," written as a tribute to his late son, while Matt Berninger explores the hollow feeling of relationships that have everything except love. The storytelling tradition continues through James McMurtry, who continues his long songwriting career with vivid musical narratives that paint complete pictures in just minutes.Hip-hop's evolution shines through multiple generations – from Logic's confident yet laid-back "Bad Mother****er" to Xzibit's emphatic return with "Shut Yo Mouth," which hilariously opens with a 1950s-style instructional segment. Ciara collaborates with the lightning-fast Busta Rhymes, while global superstar Bad Bunny demonstrates exactly why he sells out arenas worldwide with his infectious energy and multilingual approach.Ready to discover your next favorite track? Mikkelsen, a retired US Airways employee who discovered the live radio broadcast in San Diego when it aired after Prairie Home Companion, has made the trek to the capital of the Mountain State to sit in the audience every year since 2000. Mountain Stage celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023. It recently crossed the 1,000-show threshold and is showing no signs of slowing down. Frank Riley of High Road Touring, which represents recent guests Bailen -- along with Emmylou Harris, Jerry Douglas Band, Wilco, James McMurtry, Tank and the Bangas and Amy Ray among others, has been booking artists on Mountain Stage since he launched the company in 2001.   “Virtually everybody on our roster —  if it's musically appropriate — has played at least once,” Riley said. “At a bare minimum, we've had 10 artists per year so it could be well over 200, and it might be twice that.”  Don't miss out on the fun! Harmoni Kelley is a nationally touring bassist and vocalist from Austin, Texas, currently on tour with country music superstar, Kenny Chesney. A self-taught musician, Harmoni picked up the bass guitar at age 17 and hasn't looked back. With over two decades of experience both on the road and in the studio, she has mastered the art of playing by ear and understands the importance of being able to lay back, listen and play for the song.During her time as a young musician in Austin, Harmoni worked her way up through the ranks and spent time both in the studio and on the road with local legends Fastball, James McMurtry, Slaid Cleaves and Bob Schneider to name a few. Those years proved to be the most important in starting Harmoni down the path of honing in on her craft as a bass player and vocalist. She cut her teeth with bands of all musical genres from rock, pop, blues, funk, bluegrass, country and americana. In 2013, Harmoni had the opportunity to make the move to Nashville, TN and jumped at the chance. During her stint in music city, she toured with Hank Williams, Jr., Radney Foster, Bonnie Bishop, Holly Williams and Louise Mandrell. All of her time spent networking and gigging around Nashville would eventually culminate with her call to audition for Kenny Chesney in 2014.Harmoni currently splits time between her hometown of Austin, TX and Nashville, TN. When she's not on the road with Chesney, she continues to tour and do session work with various artists around the country.

Mike Graham's earliest songs were noticeably shaped by the energy buried in the flatlands and oilfields of West Texas. Born in Pecos, raised in and around Dumas, Big Spring, Midland and Odessa, Texas, it's not surprising that his debut album (1999) was titled "Just West of Nowhere". Although his musical influences include Rodney Crowell, James McMurtry, Springsteen, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt - Guy Clark, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock (all from West Texas) are on the list as well. Mike's second album titled "Find You a Highway" (2001) was produced by Larry Joe Taylor and includes several more West Texas influenced songs. His third release, "Bad Ideas" (2003), was produced by legendary guitarist, songwriter, and member of the Lost Gonzo Band John Inmon. The whiskey-soaked heartland rock record was well-received and got significant airplay on Texas radio as well as on Sirius/XM's Outlaw Country station. After touring just about every club, honky-tonk, and festival in Texas and beyond for almost a decade, Mike retired from the music business in 2006 to focus on his new family and generally becoming a grown-up.In 2020, with more time on his hands and a batch of unrecorded songs, Mike called on his former bandmates Bracken Hale, Corby Schaub, and Derek Groves, plus Heather Stalling, Geoff Queen, Courtney Patton, and Chris Schlotzhauer. The result is a seven song EP "Sunset/Sunrise". It was released in November of 2020. The self-explanatory  first track is titled "Good to be Back".  Whether alone or alongside some of the best songwriters working today, Mike is very glad to be back writing and performing his songs. https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Z4q1rOm7YTXnOd0XuHvQB?si=RoOavAp-R0-wnbQt0mGPSA https://music.apple.com/us/artist/mike-graham/962755309

There's a lot of buzz around town about the inaugural September 15-17 Annapolis Songwriters Festival. And with anything inaugural, it's hard to know what to expect.  That is where we come in! We sat down with Kris and Laura from Rams Head Presents (a sister to all the other Rams Head businesses) to find out. And in a word... OMG!! There is a lot to digest, but it is three days long, encompasses venues from Westgate Circle to City Dock, has more than 70 (yes 70) free performances, has several paid performances, and will be an incredible time for music lovers! Rams Head has the experience as they have done the world-famous Key West Songwriters Festival for years, and Annapolis really made a lot of sense. And while there are internationally known songwriters coming to town, they did not forget the wealth of talent right here and you can hear from local scribes like Skribe (see what I did there), Jimi Haha, Brandon Hardesty, Ruben Dobbs, and more. Some of the national names you know will include Amos Lee, Jake Owen, Lucinda Williams, Fantastic Negrito, Josh Ritter, James McMurtry, Madison Cunningham, and Robert Randolph! Robert Randolph is kicking off the festival with a free event at MC3 on September 15th at 5:00 pm, along with Dean Rosenthal, Skribe, Jimi Haha, and Honest Lee Soul! You will be hard-pressed to find a downtown Annapolis venue without live music over these three days--and even on the water with a concert on the Harbor Queen and Songwriters on the Severn! So much going on. Have a listen! LINKS: Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Website - Tickets) Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Facebook) Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Instagram)

Blending rockabilly and R&B, Dave became the band's primary songwriter, penning classics such as “Marie, Marie,” “American Music,” “Border Radio,” “Jubilee Train,” “Little Honey,” “Dark Night,” and “Long White Cadillac,” which later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam. After a brief stint as a member of the band X, Dave launched a solo career and continued to craft critically-acclaimed songs that defy genre, including “Fourth of July,” “Haley's Comet,” “Dry River,” “King of California,” “Abilene,” “Ashgrove,” “Harlan County Line,” “Johnny Ace is Dead,” and “Downey to Lubbock,” a collaboration with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Dave's songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Little Milton, Buckwheat Zydeko, Shakin' Stevens, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, and others. Additionally, his music has been featured on a number of TV soundtracks, including Justified and The Sopranos.

A Place For My Stuff - Yes I have/had another podcast.  A couple of podcasts actually.  With the rising price of everything, I opted not to pay to have Inside the Guest Studio available forever.   I have this convenient landing spot called My Alien Life Podcast which WILL remain forever - thus, this is part of my life, as will be the episodes of Inside the Guest Studio.  A podcast that is graced by some unique and very talented people that live slightly off the grid. Enjoy Cameron In 1982 I walked into a music store in Kalispell Montana and heard his hit Someday Some Way...  I was hooked.  From that day forward, the cassette I purchased before going to Bible camp, was in every car I ever owned until 2015.  I mailed the cassette to my friend who had gotten out of drug treatment.  We listened to that cassette so many times in my car during high school.  The cassette arrived in his mailbox, SMASHED...   I was crushed. It was my indeed pleasure to interview, Marshall Crenshaw.  My hero.   Marshall Howard Crenshaw (born November 11, 1953) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known for hit songs such as "Someday, Someway," a US Top 40 hit in 1982, "Cynical Girl," and "Whenever You're on My Mind." He is also the co-author of one of the biggest radio hits of the ‘90s, the Gin Blossoms, "Til I Hear It From You." His music has roots in classic soul music and Buddy Holly, to whom Crenshaw was often compared in the early days of his career, and whom he portrayed in the 1987 film La Bamba. Born in Michigan, Crenshaw performed in the musical Beatlemania before releasing his self-titled album in 1982. Crenshaw could not replicate the commercial success of Marshall Crenshaw and follow-up Field Day (1983) with later albums. Crenshaw has also contributed songs to other artists, writing singles for Kirsty MacColl and the Gin Blossoms. A quote from Trouser Press summed up Marshall Crenshaw's early career: "Although he was seen as a latter-day Buddy Holly at the outset, he soon proved too talented and original to be anyone but himself."[   Marshall Crenshaw on Marshall Crenshaw — “One of the fundamental things about the project was that I set out to not make an album,” Marshall Crenshaw notes. “So I did this project, and now at the end of it, there's this album, for the album fans!….” The celebrated singer-songwriter-guitarist-producer is discussing #392: The EP Collection, his new CD on the Red River Entertainment label. The 14-track set collects a dozen standout tracks drawn from the innovative series of six 10” vinyl EPs that Crenshaw released between 2013 and 2015, plus a pair of never-before-heard rarities chosen especially for this collection. The EP series was the product of Crenshaw's decision to break away from the standard album/tour cycle by recording and releasing a steady stream of new music over an extended period. The endeavor proved wildly popular with his fans, and brought in lots of “I really did love the EP project, and I'm kind of sad that it's over,” Crenshaw comments. “I was looking for a different way of working that would keep me motivated; it was cool, because it had a sense of urgency; there was always something that had just come out and always something that was on the way. It was an inspiring way to work.” #392: The EP Collection's twelve studio recordings encompass six new Crenshaw originals and six cover songs. The former group includes the bittersweet and beautiful “Grab the Next Train,” the surging and howling “Move Now,” and the hypnotic and atmospheric “Driving and Dreaming”, while the cover numbers include a reverent remake of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David/Carpenters chestnut “Close to You,” James McMurtry's “Right Here Now,” longtime Crenshaw favorite Bobby Fuller's classic “Never to Be Forgotten” and vintage numbers by the Easybeats, the Move and the Lovin' Spoonful. Rounding out #392: The EP Collection are two previously unreleased tracks: a powerful live version of the Everly Brothers classic “Man with Money,” recorded with Crenshaw's frequent touring partners the Bottle Rockets, during the week after Phil Everly's passing, and the infectious “Front Page News,” a '90s recording of a previously-unheard original that Crenshaw wrote with noted country tunesmith Leroy Preston (“I can't remember when I did it, or why, but I like it!”, says Crenshaw). “I was fortunate to have lots of brilliant people helping me on these tracks, and they really lifted the proceedings,” Crenshaw reports. “I'm proud about the range of super-excellent musicians who came on board for these sessions.” #392: The EP Collection includes contributions from avant-jazz trumpet icon Stephen Bernstein, noted jazz vibraphonist Bryan Carrott, versatile Nashville bassist Byron House, Daniel Littleton of the band Ida, renowned composer/keyboardists Rob Morsberger and Jamie Saft, along with longstanding Crenshaw cohorts like guitarists Glen Burtnick and Andy York, bassist Graham Maby, Brian Wilson/Beach Boys sideman Jeffrey Foskett, and acclaimed indie troubadour Dan Bern, who co-wrote four songs with Crenshaw. Meanwhile, on several tracks, Crenshaw worked on his own in his home studio, overdubbing all or most of the instruments and vocal harmonies himself. Crenshaw states, “I've been into the Narcissist, solitary-genius thing for a long time. For instance, “‘Cynical Girl,' on my first album, is just me, and ‘Someday Someway' is my brother on drums and me on everything else. So working alone sometimes is standard procedure for Over the course of a recording career that's spanned three decades, 13 albums and hundreds of songs, the Michigan-bred artist's musical output has maintained a consistently high level of artistry, craftsmanship and passion, endearing him to a broad and loyal fan After getting an early break playing John Lennon in a touring company of the Broadway musical Beatlemania, Crenshaw began his recording career with the now-legendary indie single “Something's Gonna Happen.” His growing notoriety in his adopted hometown of New York City helped to win Crenshaw a deal with Warner Bros. Records, which released his self-titled 1982 debut album. That collection established Crenshaw as one of the era's preeminent rock ' n' rollers, and that was confirmed by such subsequent albums as Field Day, Downtown, Mary Jean & 9 Others, Good Evening, Life's Too Short, Miracle of Science, #447, What's in the Bag? and Jaggedland. Along the way, Crenshaw's compositions have been covered by a broad array of performers, including Bette Midler, Kelly Willis, Robert Gordon, Ronnie Spector, Marti Jones and the Gin Blossoms, with whom Crenshaw co-wrote the Top 10 single “Til I Hear It From You.” He's also provided music for several film soundtracks, appeared in the films La Bamba (in which he portrayed Buddy Holly) and Peggy Sue Got Married, and was nominated for Grammy and a Golden Globe awards for writing the title track for the film comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Since 2011, Crenshaw has hosted his own radio show, The Bottomless Pit, on New York's WFUV. He's currently working on Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger's much-anticipated HBO series Vinyl, doing “some session work, a little bit of songwriting..” His eclectic resume aside, songwriting and record-making remain at the center of Marshall Crenshaw's creative life, and #392: The EP Collection confirms that his musical flame continues to burn as brightly as ever. “I still love recorded music and believe in it as an art form, whether it's a single or album, or vinyl or CD,” Crenshaw asserts, adding, “I think I'll probably stick with it.”

Exploring dreams is a powerful way to integrate psychedelic experiences. Our guest is Dr Tom Whalen. We talk about differences and similarities between dreaming and psychedelics in brain activation and in the abundance of various neuro transmitters. Tom talks about the importance of working with dreams non-interpretively since offered ideas can overrule the innate wisdom of the dreamer. We talk about Guru Yoga and also Tom's approach to working with dreams which he calls a Dream Koan practice. He will be presenting his work at the IASD conference in Tucson in July. We end with Tom demonstrating his non-interpretive approach by exploring a dream with Katherine. BIO: Tom Whalen is an MD practicing pain medicine. For the last 15 years, he's been following advances in neuroscience, including the use of psychedelics to treat addiction and PTSD. His passion lies in the realms of spiritual practice. He has been practicing Zen since 1971 and Archetypal Dreamwork since 1989. With these two practices, he has synthesized a “new” form of Zen practice, which he calls Dream-Koan practice. He currently offers this practice with Rick Issan Elkin, through the Eighth Wave Community at EighthWave.org.  Also Look for Dr. Whalen at nogatezencenter.org and  promotionofpeace.org. Last year saw the release of The Horses and the Hounds. James McMurtry's 10th album was easily one of the year's best, showcasing a seasoned songwriter at the top of his game, 35 years after entering the industry. The musician is quick to point out that his songs are essentially all fiction, something that has, perhaps, become something of a sticking point after so often inhabiting his characters in the first-person. The son of an English professor and The Last Picture Show novelist-turned-screenwriter, McMurtry has a keen knack for storytelling that's made him one of alternative country's most enduring voice. The musician joins us to discuss performing during a pandemic, penning protest songs and the magic of Rick Nelson's “Garden Party.”

It's titled The Horses and the Hounds, and today, we get into the making of the record, and other topics that show us just what makes this celebrated tunesmith tick. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth at Jackson Browne's Groove Masters in Santa Monica, California, a world class studio that's housed such legends as Bob Dylan, David Crosby, of course Jackson Browne, and now James McMurtry. The author Stephen King wrote that “James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation,” and we think King may be on to something.
