"What I Deserve" Over the course of almost fifteen albums, Kelly Willis has made a pretty good case that she's one of the greats. The Oklahoma-born singer/songwriter is not only a beautiful and affecting singer, her phrasing is filled with purring vowels, consonants fearlessly taking sharp corners and delicious diction which powers each number with authority, vulnerability and grace. Willis' career has a pretty good stockpile of highlights and here's a few for you: She's collaborated with Allison Kraus, Vince Gill, Jay Faraar of Son Volt and Chuck Prophet, a few of her songs were in Thelma and Louise, she was in the movie Bob Roberts, she's played all over the world, including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass here in San Francisco, put out a holiday album with her ex-husband Bruce Robison and is now celebrating the 25th anniversary of her 1999 album What I Deserve. la buena noticia es que Chuck Prophet está vivo, y quien sabe, si de paso cañazo puede haber despertado algunos que de verdad murieron. Le puso un sabor a cumbia muy especial a su nuevo disco. Se hizo un picnic con unos ritmos latinos, que lo hacen sonar todo locamente bien. el diario de galgomundo en el 20 del penúltimo mes, después del empate con el que nos fuimos a dormir, y el domingo tenemos que salir de otro, delgado o angosto, coalición de partidos o amplio el frente. Discuten en un día de miércoles entre patos y ningún ganso, apenas unas pesadillas. Faltan mucho más que once para las once y once. El ritmo de Chuck Prophet, cuando habla con el doctor, este le dice que puede haber visto un fantasma donde antes hubo otro disfrazado de eternidad. Arriba de la mesa, en la casa del galgo, el libro del que tiene los incendios que me esperan en Charco. Rock Springs y el segundo intento hasta llegar al final del cuento de los fuegos de artificio. Me cuesta escribir esas propuestas para los que empujan al galgo para que ruede mejor. Los Larrique rulemanes que hacen los discos girar los tiene. Hace falta prender los fuegos, que vengan los truenos, el sol, y poder imaginarse como todo puede ser. Primero que vengan los truenos, y luego todo lo demás. No puede hacer más largo todo esto, hay algo en la casa del galgo mañana. Sally pudo haber sido una policía, y Alejandro Escovedo que una vez se pegó un susto con la muerte también, escribió con Chuck Prophet que estuvo girando en música a las seis y ahora en el diario de galgomundo en un día de miércoles, escribieron juntos esta hace unos varios años, cuando eran animales reales, de alguna parte de Califronia, capaz que cerca de San Francisco, las tumbas de sus padres y mothers of invention, no muy lejos de donde todo este mercenario discos de amantes del rock se grabó. Si conocen a Alejandro Escovedo bien, tiene unos discos buenos del pasado y hasta algunos buenos del presente que me pude haber perdido, pero los puedo encontrar cualquier día cuando logre hacer esto mismo que hago ahora, que tenía mucho sentido, como escuchar un disco de principio al final. Con lo mucho que me gusta el Sha, Sha, la, la, de este que tiene el nombre de Despierten los muertos, puedo ir a buscar donde darle el clic antiguo, de pedirlo por internet, y que me llegue por correo. Dicen que van a colgar unos cuadros mañana en la casa del galgo, y yo debería de tener un lugar, como el que había arriba de la barra cuando pegaba la curva y cuatro parlantes que no tienen porque venir de nuevo méxico, pero sí habría que dejarlos colgados para antes de que este año se termine, para antes de que comience el último mes del buen año. Pintar la pared de blanco otra vez, pasar por arriba lo que se pintó el año pasado. Deseo que haya peces pintados, y estar mirando a los pájaros que pintan en la pared, del cumple de cinco de la hermana del que cumplió 16 el 14 del penúltimo. Mismo crimen, el buen año que se nos va, y el sabático que se viene. Nuevo gobierno, o viejo conocido. No hay discusión en la forma de vivir, no hay dulce condena. Y todo lo que estuve haciendo todo este tiempo, fue dejar el disco de Chuck Prophet en play. Deje colgado a Alejandro Escovedo que es amigo de Chuck, y muy seguramente de la banda de Chuck que se llama la misión expresa, si es que Mision Express, se traduce exactamente de ese modo. Con lápiz labial escribe, no hay testigo, no hay crimen. La hermana del alma perdida es de Escovedo. Muriendo todos jóvenes es de aquel disco con el negocio del dolor con el que conocí por primera vez a este que canta con los quien sabe? Había que trepar una escalera para verte, cantaba Ale Escovedo, cuando Chuck se iba a ver una cualquiera al cine. Está sentado en la primera fila, y ya sabe que ella es suya. Que todos los políticos toman en el club que no es del partido. Azúcar en el agua, estoy trepando, tus escalones, podemos convertir esta canción en oro, no hay dudas, pero nunca los van a postular a uno de esos que puedan enmarcar como uno de Tom Petty que dice into the great wide open. Las últimas dos la cumbia aparece más fuerte, los solos de guitarras son buenos, pero hay muchas más cosas de la percusión y los ritmos del sol, de ninguna sombra más que las de Elon, para quien está dedicada la número diez, la que viene antes de la última que dice que es un buen día para estar vivo, en mi caso particular no rascarme la frente, porque va a sangrar igual que las piernas anoche. Las temporadas cambian y el buen año se va, pero faltaba este disco que dice algo que es un buen día para saludar al diablo, ver una pelicula de un testigo en peligro porque que vio un asesinato, es hermoso el disco nuevo de Chuck Prophet, es un buen día para caminar por el agua, capaz llamar a tu madre. The two are familiar with each other's work through songwriting together for Mark's latest album Lay Your Darkness Down (2023). We're thrilled to welcome Mark back as guest host!Chuck Prophet has been a mainstay on the indie and Americana music scenes since the 1980s, before either designation was a common part of the rock 'n' roll lexicon. Through his guitar work in the seminal psychedelic desert rock band Green On Red, musical collaborations with Kelly Willis, Kim Richey, and Warren Zevon, and a string of over a dozen solo records, Prophet has carved out a respected niche in rock music history with his “California Noir” sound. It's a streak he probably could have kept riding for the rest of his career, if not for his sudden diagnosis with lymphoma a couple years ago. During his treatment and eventual recovery from cancer, Prophet found solace in his record collection—in particular the vibrant rhythms and danceable energy of Cumbia. He eventually sought out a favorite local band in the genre to jam, and then formally collaborate on Wake The Dead, Prophet's first new solo album in four years. The project blends his longtime band The Mission Express with members of the Cumbia outfit Quiensave, and the result is equal parts familiar and fresh.I have firsthand knowledge of Prophet's freewheeling collaborative process, having worked with him and his longtime songwriting partner Klipschutz on a song for my 2020 album Blindsided. I once taught with Chuck at a folk festival songwriting school, and was relieved to be able to play before him at the instructor open mic, because no one wants to follow Chuck Prophet. His musical catalog is so deep and broad that it's both inspiring…and a bit overwhelming. Originally a fun side hustle and bluegrass vehicle for Zack, the group, which also includes Charlie Rose and Taylor and Jake Armerding, started very casually performing at the legendary local Cantab Lounge. Zack accurately likens the vibe of the place to a basement Star Wars Cantina full of bluegrass bands.In between their main gigs with performers like Josh Ritter and Lori McKenna and solo careers, Barnstar! has cultivated an explosive live performance filled with energy and emotional expression leaving concert attendees cheering and crying along. Today's episode is a conversation I had with the wonderful Matt Jaffe. After cutting his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area, San Francisco songwriter Matt Jaffe was discovered by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads. Together, they produced his first album at the age of 16, cementing Matt's dedication to music. Soon, he formed a band, dropped out of college, and has not looked back. Since then, Matt has cowritten with Chuck Prophet and Tom Higgenson of Plain White T's, crisscrossed the country opening for Blues Traveler and Alejandro Escovedo, and recorded half a dozen albums alongside luminaries of the Bay Area music scene. Inspired by the great lineage of rock n' roll, he marries literary lyrics with the undeniable urge to dance.I sat down with Matt on November 2 of this year to talk about his music and the influence of Tom Petty's music in his life. Yet again (man, I've been lucky!) I was so lucky to be able to talk to such a warm, articulate, and genuine artist. If you've either listened to, or experienced live performances by Midwest area bands including Stillwater, Waterloo, Magnolia Summer, Rough Shop and Cave States, you've heard music by Chris Grabau. Chris has composed songs and provided guitar work and vocals for all of those groups and his band Cave States is now in its tenth year of recording and performing. There's also a long list of bands that he's shared the stage with and also lent his musical talents to in the studio. He's appeared with bands at several well known Midwest music festivals and also in Austin at South by Southwest. Chris has performed over the years with the likes of Chuck Prophet, Alejandro Escovedo, Robyn Hitchcock, Buddy Guy, Matthew Sweet, Jeff Tweedy…and even St. Louis legend Chuck Berry. That's just a fraction of the artists and bands that have recognized the talents of the prolific Chris Grabau. Chris took time out of a very busy schedule to talk with me in the Frets studio. During 2021, with touring still off the agenda owing to the pandemic, He released a new track every month via Wicked Cool Records for his project ‘1221'. Collaboration was the abiding theme, with artists & friends such as Bob Schneider and Chuck Prophet offering up previously unreleased original songs for the record. Nestled among originals of his own, ‘1221 also features a smattering of choice covers where Ryan does his very own take on songs by the Spin Doctors (How Could You Want Him…), Catherine Wheel (Satellite) and the Refreshments (Banditos). Working with go-to producer Dave Draper, the singles came together in pandemic isolation with Ryan recording at his home studio in Texas and Dave sprinkling his magic from the United Kingdom. Chuck Prophet has been making music since he was 12 years old.  Originally from Orange County, California, he got his start with the psychedelic/desert rock band Green on Red in the early 80s. In 1990, he put out his first solo album, Brother Aldo, and began making music with his wife Stephanie Finch.  Chuck, Stephanie and his band the Mission Express are coming to the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks on October 28, 2021.
