Tyler Ramsey sat down with me for this week's episode of Roadcase, and I couldn't be more stoked to chat with the former Band of Horses guitarist. Tyler is a kind and gentle soul, who truly values the power of music as a means of connection with his audience. His latest album, New Lost Ages, sees him team up with producer Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes), and takes us on a deep ride, both musically and emotionally.I talked to Tyler about the power of music to connect, and how he relishes the possibility that his deeply personal songs might have a positive impact on his audience and fans. We also delve into the challenge of being more vulnerable as a means to becoming a better person and much to my delight, touch upon some fun Lord of the Rings talk too!! This week we welcome Ian MacDougal of the Lonestar indie rockers BROKEN GOLD. The band is set for its first release of new music in three years . MacDougall is a member of cult, Texan punks Riverboat Gamblers, he spent 5 years with Band Of Horses, and has been drafted into countless other punk and crust band tours. Bobby Daniel (bass) provides low-end to legendary Austin songwriter Alejandro Escovedo and Ben Lance (guitar) is part of anthemic rockers Mountain Time, while drummer Sam Rich has served stints in Del-Vipers and Black Books. While they all call Austin, TX, “home”, they've all put in their fair share of miles performing across the globe. “Spiraling” sets the stage for the Broken Gold's upcoming sophomore album Wild Eyes, which arrives on April 26th via hometown label Chicken Ranch Records. The album's name is a nod to a lyrical phrase shared both by the album track “Shambling”, as well in Thin Lizzy's “The Boys Are Back In Town”. The Thin Lizzy reference is one that always resonated with MacDougall who felt the line “guess who just got back today, them wild eyed boys that had been away” summed up the fried feeling of arriving home after weeks on tour. The collection of songs that make up Wild Eyes reach across genre boundaries to showcase the technical versatility and emotional insight that MacDougall has refined over the past two decades as he performed everywhere from punk squats to headlining mainstages at Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. The constant is the honesty and vulnerability in both MacDougall's DIY ethics and approach to music, facts that are laid bare on every note of Wild Eyes. To bring Wild Eyes to life, Broken Gold enlisted acclaimed engineer Stuart Sikes (The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes) to track and mix the record, while the legendary Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) provided the mastering polish.Wild Eyes will be available on limited edition vinyl on April 26th, 2024. Mark Windt, born in Cleveland, later a resident of Holland, and now back in Ohio, performs under the name Kramies. Have you heard of him? We hadn't. But Patrick Carney of the Black Keys has. So has Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. Kramies has performed with Spiritualized, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico, and currently is on tour with Tyler Ramsey of Band Of Horses. In this episode, Bob and Nick visit with Kramies, learn about his interesting career and listen to some of his evocative dream pop. And we discuss the current weirdness of the music business, how difficult and yet simultaneously easy it is to develop an audience, and get your music heard. Note: Kramies is also a very funny fellow, and this is a particularly interesting episode! Tune in Thursday, February 8, at 10 pm to The Summit FM, 91.3, or listen anytime on Apple, Spotify, Google, Podbean, SoundCloud, or wherever you get your podcasts! (Thanks to Brad Savage)

Margo Cilker - "Lowland Trail" from the 2023 album Valley of Heart's Delight from Fluff & Gravy For today's Song of the Day, Goldendale, WA-based singer/songwriter Margo Cilker shares an early listen of her sophomore LP Valley Of Heart's Delight, slated for a September 15th release via Fluff & Gravy Records. The album was produced by long-time KEXP fave Sera Cahoone, and recorded with guest musicians from The Decemberists, Band Of Horses, and Beirut. She says of the new album: I wrote these songs surrounded by the wild landscapes of the Northwest, but I was leaning toward the place I'd come from. I felt cut off from my family and the valley that held them. I spent hours thinking about my sense of belonging. I'd traveled through many places and then, when the travel stopped, I ruminated on where I had ended up. Where were you when the music stopped? I was in Enterprise, OR. And there in Enterprise, my mind drifted back to the Valley of Heart's Delight. I wrote about family — about death and rebirth, and the arcs of love and art through a family line. There are songs that hint at missteps and redemption. There are songs about trees: in orchard rows, family trees, redwoods. And water: agricultural runoff, wild rivers, dammed rivers, baptismal flows. And there's a [cover] song about a fish, cause it's a damn good song and I wanted to record it. Os Band Of Horses passam esta semana por Portugal em mais um concerto RADAR 20 Anos. Este é um Especial sobre a discografia da banda norte-americana. O texto é de João Barros.
Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell talks to morning host Matt Pelsor about the various inspirations for the new album Things are Great; breakups, both personal and within the band, as well as musical inspiration from a hotel room in Iceland. He shares on their decision to produce the record internally, and on his appreciation for being able to play out again; as well as why he's looking forward to coming to Indy specifically. Band of Horses play with Black Keys July 16th at Ruoff Music Center.
Aaron's song picks for the week come from a Seattle-based band led by singer/songwriter Ben Bridwell while Brent spotlights music from one of the most successful Canadian rock groups of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Formed after the break-up of Bridwell's previous band, Carissa's Wierd, Aaron highlights three songs from the group Band Of Horses. Originating in Winnipeg as Chad Allan & The Expressions before a clever marketing ploy permanently altered their name in 1965, Brent looks at three songs from the career of The Guess Who. Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Things Are Great, the band's first album in six years. The South Carolina rocker discusses how the LP “almost killed him” with no touring, a divorce from his wife, writing a breakup record knowing that his kids might listen, and masking the truth with tricky wordplay. Bridwell goes on to speak on his disdain for the California town of Coalinga, how there could be a follow-up EP of leftover songs, and the pile of covers the band has tracked. Listen to Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell discuss Things Are Great, its heavily personal content, and more. You can also watch the full interview via Consequence. In this session, Ben Bridwell takes us through the events that led to Things Are Great in his usual self-deprecating charm.
In this slightly delayed episode, Nate and Kyle discuss the Band of Horses new-ish record, Things Are Great. The hosts debate whether the title is an accurate description of the album or if it is indeed wishful thinking. As it turns out, this might be the episode in which the record for the most uses of the word "fine" is set. Band of Horses is out with their first new album in six years. While it's called ‘Things Are Great,' the lyrics paint a different picture. Frontman Ben Bridwell talks about how the record was inspired by heartache and breakups. He also discusses his experience arriving in Seattle homeless years ago before starting the band. Finally, he shares his thoughts on the music industry and how he spent between $350k-$500k on this album in hopes the band's record label and sales would pay out. «Things Are Great» verspricht uns die 6. Platte von Ben Bridwells Band of Horses aus Seattle. Are they though? Seit der verflucht grossartigen Debütsingle «The Funeral» (2006) rennt Bridwell seinem eigenen Geniestreich hinterher. Dann kam die Pandemie. Dann zerbrach die Ehe. Das neue Album bringt in vielerlei Hinsicht Trost – auch für Fans der ersten Stunde!

It's okay to pay homage to your influences, but don't get too caught up in re-creating what they've already done! The key is in finding your own voice. Creating art is often a journey of self-discovery, and it can be rewarding to see how your work has evolved over time. Be proud of where you've come from and let that reflect in your music. Ben talks to Ben: Songwriters on Process interviews Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses.Fun fact: this is not the first time I've interviewed Bridwell. The first was in 2015, when the amazing Sera Cahoone hooked us up with each other.Like most songwriters, Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses has found the past two years to be a bane to his creative process. With few exceptions, songwriters have told me that dark days are not conducive to creativity. As Carl Newman of The New Pornographers said to me, “Some people say that they write best when they're sad or depressed. I don't get that. Because when I'm sad or depressed, I'm crippled beyond writing.'” In our 2019 interview, Jim James of My Morning Jacket decried the myth of the tortured artist. Patterson Hood and Lilly Hiatt told me that they wrote a lot for about a month after the pandemic started, but that was it. Gloominess aside, if your songwriting centers around conversations you hear and people you see, what's there to write about if you hear nothing and see nothing? The pandemic has not been good for Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. “It did not lead to me writing more stuff. It messed me up,” he told me. Large expanses of time—no touring, after all—have not led to more songwriting. In fact, all this time has made him feel “listless.” The breakup of Bridwell's marriage has made things even tougher, and the freedom to write whenever he wants actually makes him want to write less. “All this freedom makes me push it away,” he says. “I never did that when there was structure. When I had a routine, it was easy to create. Without that, I'm listless.” While Bridwell's creative process may have changed in seven years because of family upheaval, one element remains constant: crossword puzzles. Just as he told me seven years ago, he uses crossword puzzles as a way to explore language and wordplay. The latest album by Band of Horses is called Things are Great.
