POPULARITY
In this revealing episode of The MCP, I sit down with Grammy-nominated songwriter, guitarist, and Americana mainstay Will Kimbrough for a wide-ranging conversation on the hard truths and quiet joys of a life in music. From his early days as a 12 year old electric guitar player to getting signed to EMI, and then John Prine's Oh Boy Records, to his work with Jimmy Buffett, Shemekia Copeland, and Todd Snider, Will offers a masterclass in musical longevity, humility, and hustle.A few of the stories and names he mentions reminded me of what I sometimes foolishly take for granted — namely my geographical proximity to musical greatness. For instance celebrated producer Jay Joyce has a studio not 50 hundred feet away from where I now sit, and in the other direction, three houses opposite, is Eric McConnell's studio, the legendary location where was recorded my favorite album of all time, Todd Snider's East Nashville Skyline.Incidentally, in the picture at top I am sitting across the table from that album's producer. I was so excited I had to share the story of discovering that album in a CD listening station at Waterloo records in Austin in the closing moments of an otherwise very dismal experience, which was me playing SXSW in 2004. That album is why I moved to East Nashville, and why I live there still. Crazy but true.Back to Will. Kimbrough opens up about navigating the highs and lows of the industry—learning to trust a team, the freedom of doing things DIY, and how obligation can become an artist's best creative ally. His career parallels a number of iconic Nashville personalities and institutions, like Mike Grimes (with whom Kimbrough formed the beloved trio the Bis-quits and signed to Prine's Oh Boy Records). Finally we get into his life-changing work with veterans through Songwriting with Soldiers and post-traumatic growth programs, and share a few stories about sobriety (his, mostly) and how he's managed to steer clear of some of the darker potholes that might have otherwise claimed a career now well into in its fourth decade. And yes—there's a live performance Kimbrough's song “For the Life of Me,” with me in there on guitar.00:00:00 "Desired Obligation" 00:01:08 Congrats on the Grammy Nom, Will 00:03:06 What caught your ear early on? 00:04:12 Seeing Bruce Springsteen on your 12th birthday 00:05:19 Riffing with Doyle at Grimey's about the power of earlier radio 00:06:18 The first thing Will did with an electric guitar 00:09:04 Constant Throughput makes you less precious 00:10:19 Riffing on Jay Joyce 00:11:51 Getting signed - "the shackles were on" 00:17:22 The collateral positives of getting signed 00:20:18 how to negotiate the tension between personal freedom and teamwork 00:23:11 Meeting Jimmy Buffett through Todd Snider 00:24:32 Trying to get dropped and forming the Bis-quits 00:26:49 Energy optimism and drive in finding a manager or launching a record 00:27:20 Why is it you make your best work when you're in a bad way? 00:28:48 Will's collective songwriting 00:31:31 Writing records with Todd Snider East Nashville Skyline and the Devil You Know 00:32:33 Korby's "East Nashville Skyline" story 00:35:54 The story about Todd Snider's fallout with Jimmy Buffett 00:38:00 Getting addicted to the school of Todd and Rodney Crowell and that crew 00:38:56 A version of the dream as expressed by Korby 00:39:55 Working with Shemekia Copeland 00:40:44 Warrior PATHH program 00:41:39 Wills Bob Dylan movie story 00:44:42 Setting up "For the Life of Me" live in studio 00:53:06 Will Kimbrough performs "For the Life of Me" 00:57:07 "Addicted to gratitude" 00:59:53 A story about John Prine's "Hello in there" 01:02:50 Are you melancholy or even-keeled? 01:05:41 How have you stayed open to the constant change? 01:07:30 Some notes on sobriety 01:12:27 That plato quote about everyone is fighting a hard battle 01:15:17 Talking about reading and writing 01:17:15 How a story about a song connects people 01:18:00 A story about writing with Jimmy Buffett Get full access to The Morse Code with Korby Lenker at korby.substack.com/subscribe

Steven and Ian open with a discussion of the recent Robbie Williams' biopic Better Man, in which the British singer is portrayed by a CGI monkey (2:09). Shockingly, the movie didn't catch on at the box office. They also do a quick Sportscast on the Eagles beating the Packers (9:24), and an even quicker Politics-cast on the upcoming inauguration (17:03). Then, finally, they get down to talking about music, touching on the new Lucy Dacus album announcement (25:20), the Rilo Kiley reunion (37:58), and the re-release of the classic rock documentary Dig! (48:13).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the "nu-blog rock" band Lots Of Hands and Steven stumps for the singer-songwriter Todd Snider (57:42).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Episode 285: As I say in the opening of this week's show, it's one thing to get applause for your songs, and it's another to get laughs. John Craigie of Portland, OR has quietly built a robust touring career because he's an excellent songwriter who also keeps his audiences in stitches between songs. His newest album is a collaboration called Pagan Church with TK and the Holy Know-Nothings, the Portland band fronted by admired songwriter Taylor Kingman. We talk about how Craigie developed his stagecraft under the influence of artists like Arlo Guthrie and his friend Todd Snider, as well as his unlikely path to performing while getting a math degree in California. No surprise, it's a lot of fun. Also in the hour, Dave Wilson and John Teer reflect on 25 years as Chatham County Line and the new directions baked into the new album Hiyo.

Sometimes it's "Lost for Words" by Pink Floyd and sometimes it's "Route" by Son Volt and sometimes it's "Kick Down the Doors" by The Professionals and sometimes it's "Play a Train Song" by Todd Snider and sometimes it's "Bring It on Home to Me" by Sam Cooke (but specifically the live version from The Harlem Square Club). Currently it's "Cowboy Song". Anyway, here's a great live version from Phil & the boys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdjq8xDnzuM

They got a great hoodie called its a great day to be married… after today maybe some of you will want to wear purchase it… because many of you are not loving the days you are married… Famous last words on your deathbed Todd Beamer Was A Passenger On United Flight 93, September 11, 2001 Are you guys ready? Lets roll. I have offended God and man, because my work did not reach the quality it should have. DaVinci I finally get to see my Marilynn… spoken by Joe Dimaggio about his wife Marilynn Monroe. What would your last words be? If I have the chance I would like them NOT to be aaahhhhhggg But rather “serve God no matter what, he is worthy”. But King David… he was a shepherd boy, the forgotten son, he was a outcast running from the law, he was King, he was an adulterer and he was a lousy father…. and what did he say? What were his last recorded words… and spoken to his son. Think of that just for a second… scripture records his last words… but is sure to let us know it was to his future heir. His up and coming son… it wasn't words to the nation of Israel, or to his family or to God… it was to his son- the next generation. 1 Kings 2:2 “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. Prove - appearing… showing up… transforming into We can see the sins of David breeding, spreading in his son Solomon. Yes Solomon was a great king, the wisest of the wise… but David loved his wives… and Solomon really loved his women and wives… and in a few ways we see how Solomon grew up and in how some other ways he never really achieved the character of God was hoping him to have. But David said be strong and prove yourself a man… I wonder what David would have said if could have seen the end of Solomons life. TMI yesterday my wife and I got into a hmmm lets call it a discussion. She said your oldest is 33 years old and you can't tell him what to do, you will put a wall between you both. I said “if I do it the wrong way, yes I would put up a wall…. however it is still and will always be on me to tell my son how to live if he is not living for God”. I have told me boys numerous times growing up… if you don't want to live for God- thats fine, but don't be a phony… just say Im not a Christian… and I will pray you will become one, but I won't be torn up inside that you are a liar. And I loved that my youngest son for a long long time did just that… now he is on fire for God, but you get my point. Grow up and show yourself to be a man… I would add a man of God. One more question… what will it feel like at the end of your life to not show up like a man of God… Look I see a lot of men in our world who are manly… the kill things, they are tough, they sacrifice for their family, they build businesses, they help others… but if you do not know God - Live for God - and win others TO God… are you really a man of God? I love the old song by Todd Snider called Talking Seattle Grunge… about a band that was so alternative and wanted to stand out so much that they formed and decided to never play a song, not a note… it pokes fun of being so different that masses can be fooled and fall in love with the gimmick and forget what being in a band is about… - you should check it out. But point being, the world is full of gimmicks when it comes to what a man is… I am sure when we get to heaven there will be men who were scrawny, ugly, uneducated, poor and maybe never had a wife or a woman… and they were THEEE Men of God that are on display because they realized what being a man is about - being like Jesus. So today…as if I am going to die… I say unto you “Be strong and be a man… a man of God”!

Episode 14 of Rock is Lit features Michael Amos Cody's novel ‘Gabriel's Songbook', a story that follows starry-eyed Gabriel Tanner on his quest to strike it big as a singer-songwriter in Nashville in the 1980s. In the final segment of that episode, Peter Cooper and Frye Gaillard join me to talk about the real Nashville music scene in the 1980s to add real-world context to Michael's novel. Frye is an historian and author of such books as ‘A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s', ‘The Southernization of America', which he co-wrote with Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker, and ‘Watermelon Wine: The Spirit of Country Music'. On a sad note, the morning Episode 14 first aired, I received a message from Frye Gaillard, giving me the tragic news that Peter Cooper had passed away just two days prior—on Tues, Dec 6, 2022. Peter was the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's senior director, producer, and writer. As one of Nashville's most respected music journalists, he wrote for the ‘Tennessean', ‘American Songwriter', ‘Esquire' and numerous other publications His insight was deepened by his experiences as a Grammy-nominated producer, a singer, a songwriter and a touring musician. His songs were recorded by luminaries including John Prine, Todd Snider, and Country Music Hall of Fame members Bobby Bare and Mac Wiseman. Country Music Hall of Fame member Kris Kristofferson said, “Peter Cooper looks at the world with an artist's eye and a human heart and soul.” What you're about to hear is the full interview I recorded with Frye Gaillard and Peter Cooper on Tues, Oct 18, 2022, less than two months before Peter's death. I offer it to you now as a tribute to Peter—in honor of his life and in gratitude for the insight he and Frye brought to Episode 14 of Rock is Lit about Michael Amos Cody's novel ‘Gabriel's Songbook,' a book Peter so enjoyed. I wish all of Peter's friends and family peace and healing. Listen to this bonus interview, then check out Episode 14 of Rock is Lit. Connor McLaren is a psych-folk artist from Bloomington, Indiana. Referred to as the "American Liam Gallagher but friendlier", he builds his musical home on a faded denim foundation - think Bob Dylan or The Who. His walls can tell a thousand stories - think Todd Snider or Lou Reed - and though it's only apparent in some of the rooms, there's a distinct love for Reggae, thanks to his yearly pilgrimage to Jamaica. As you look upon the mostly vintage decor, you'll notice the occasional shiny item - think Mike Posner or Billie Eilish. Everything comes together like cutting edge comfort food for the ears. If you could live inside of a sound, you'd probably move here and stay awhile... Welcome to the home of Connor McLaren. While attending Appalachian State University, Connor discovered a key building tool for his music; Cannabis. As his mind expanded, so did his desire to hit the road. Without a team or music biz knowledge, he and his brother Alec, began setting up outside of their favorite bands' concerts. They'd play on the street amidst droves of music fans exiting venues, accepting generous donations to their “Weed Fund” tip box. These DIY antics got the attention of indie-icon Ben Kweller who invited the brothers to Texas to write and record. In the spring of 2022, Connor signed with The Noise Company to release his forthcoming debut album, Innocence. Listen to Connor on Spotify. Follow Connor on Instagram. This person died in 2020, age 78. He grew up in Oneonta, New York. He began his career in the 1960s, hitchhiking and busking around the country before establishing himself in Greenwich Village. Mainstream radio programmers didn't play his music, perhaps because of his gruff, braying singing voice and his reputation for being intoxicated onstage. He became a mainstay of the Texas Outlaw movement that catapulted Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings to fame, years after his best known composition, Mr. Bojangles. Episode 229: Todd Snider walked out alone on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in late September looking radiant. He was bolstered and beloved by the loyalist lifer fans that hang on his every word, spoken or sung. He told the one about his first open mic and the one about East Nashville character Skip Litz who loved Train Songs. Todd's mother was on hand and it was her birthday, so we all sang for her. Two days later we sat down for a delightful, rambling conversation inspired by the release of the new album Live: Return Of The Storyteller.

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for box sets and other repackages of previously released material. I may be new release oriented, but I love a good set of odds and ends. Give me those unheard demos. Let me hear those old concerts. Tonight’s show compiles those types of records. There’s unreleased material by a forgotten band that were contemporaries of the New York Dolls. There’s a new mixes of classic Dead Kennedys songs. There’s numerous outtakes by the likes of Wilco and Joe Strummer. And there’s also the recently discovered early recordings of future Velvet Underground tunes by Lou Reed. Plus, a ton of live releases from Todd Snider, Pixies, Soul Asylum, and others. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! Let's get into it: COLORADO NEWSLINE: RINO hunters looking for a bloodbathAs county clerks across Colorado prepared to send out mail ballots to voters on Monday, former President Donald Trump weighed in on one of the state's most-watched 2022 races.Trump blasted Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe O'Dea, a Denver construction CEO, as a “RINO,” or Republican in name only, over comments O'Dea made about a potential 2024 Trump presidential campaign. In a Sunday appearance on CNN's State of the Union, O'Dea was asked whether the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol should disqualify Trump from running again. O'Dea called the events of Jan. 6 “a black eye for our country,” though he has previously said he doesn't believe Trump deserves blame for the Capitol attack.“I don't think Donald Trump should run again,” O'Dea said Sunday. “I'm going to actively campaign against Donald Trump and make sure that we've got four or five really great Republicans right now — Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott. They can run and serve for eight years.”Trump responded in a post on his Truth Social website: “MAGA doesn't Vote for stupid people with big mouths”O'Dea faces an uphill battle against incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat who is seeking his third full Senate term, in a state that has trended increasingly blue in recent elections. Bennet has led O'Dea in recent polling by an average of eight percentage points, according to FiveThirtyEight.A first-time candidate who has pitched himself as a moderate on social issues, O'Dea has walked a tightrope throughout his campaign as he seeks to win over moderate voters without alienating the conservative Republican base.He did not publicly state his opposition to a Trump 2024 bid until after the June GOP primary, when he defeated far-right state Rep. Ron Hanks with 55% of the vote. His campaign clarified that O'Dea would still support Trump in the general election if the former president wins the GOP nomination, but O'Dea has since backed off of that position in interviews.GOP state Rep. Dave Williams, a far-right election denier who mounted an unsuccessful primary challenge against U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn earlier this year, reacted to Trump's comments in a Twitter post.“Ouch,” Williams wrote. “Maybe Joe's campaign shouldn't alienate the base 3 weeks before an election.”Trump's criticism follows Ron Hanks' endorsement of the Libertarian in the Senate race, Bryan Peotter, who has put election denial and total opposition to abortion at the center of his campaign. The Libertarian wrote on Twitter that Trump's attack on O'Dea “reads like an endorsement for my campaign pretty clearly.”In an Oct. 7 appearance on the conservative “Chuck and Julie Show,” Ron Hanks, who received just under 45% of the vote in the GOP's June primary, said neither Peotter nor O'Dea have a chance of beating Bennet - and that Republican voters should vote for Peotter to send a message to party leaders.“It's our time now as grassroots Colorado conservatives to step in. We have a big battle ahead to try to reform this leadership,” said Hanks. “It's got to be a bloodbath.”COLORADO NEWSLINE: Will Colorado legalize psychedelic mushrooms?Ten years after Colorado voters made history by approving the ballot measure that legalized recreational marijuana, this November's Proposition 122 would allow licensed ‘healing centers' and decriminalize personal use of some hallucinogens. The Natural Medicine Health Act would establish a regulated market for psilocybin and psilocyn, the psychoactive compounds found in psychedelic mushrooms. Placed on the 2022 ballot by a citizen initiative, it will become law if a majority of Colorado voters give their approval. The measure would allow licensed “healing centers” to provide access to psilocybin and psilocyn for therapeutic purposes. It would also decriminalize the “personal use” of the substances, allowing people to possess and grow psychedelic mushrooms in their own homes.GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOXNatural Medicine Colorado, the group backing the effort says “Natural psychedelic medicines are non-addictive, and can have profound benefits for people struggling with mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, opioid use disorder, and those struggling to find peace at the end of their lives.”Proposition 122 qualified for the ballot in July after organizers submitted more than the required 124,632 valid signatures to the secretary of state's office. An issue committee backing the measure has reported more than $2.8 million in contributions, according to campaign finance disclosures.Nearly all of that funding came from New Approach PAC, a Washington, D.C.-based PAC that advocates for drug policy reform. Top donors to the group include the van Ameringen Foundation, Scotts Miracle-Gro and Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps.New Approach PAC supported successful mushroom decriminalization measures in Oregon and Washington, D.C., in 2020. If voters approve Proposition 122, Colorado would become the third jurisdiction in the country to legalize psilocybin.Denver voters took a more limited step towards the decriminalization of psychedelic mushrooms in 2019, approving a measure that directed police to make possession of psychedelics the city's ”lowest law-enforcement priority.”Legalization advocates point to a vast body of existing research showing that psychedelics can be effective in treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health conditions. The federal Food and Drug Administration has designated psilocybin as a “breakthrough therapy” for the treatment of major depressive disorder.Luke Gruber, an initiative backer and a Marine veteran who suffered from PTSD and depression after serving in Afghanistan, says psilocybin therapy “changed his life.”He said, “I can't really describe the experience, but I can describe what it was like after my first treatment with natural medicine. It was like being reminded of what hope felt like.”If passed, Proposition 122 would establish a 15-member Natural Medicine Advisory Board to oversee the regulation of psychedelic substances. The first licenses for regulated providers would be issued beginning in September 2024. Pending recommendations from the advisory board, other substances, including DMT and mescaline, could be added to the program in 2026.I WILL BE VOTING YES. COLORADO NEWSLINE: SHE'S JUST BLOWING SMOKEKirkmeyer repeats false Colorado oil and gas claims in 8th District debate against CaraveoIn a recent debate in the race for Colorado's new 8th Congressional District, right-wing GOP State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer took the opportunity to repeat a series of false claims about the oil and gas industry, and the impacts of a 2019 law sponsored by her Democratic opponent, state Rep. Dr. Yadira Caraveo.Kirkmeyer called the package of new health, safety and environmental reforms a “de facto ban on oil and gas. We went from 5,100 permits approved in 2018 down to about, I think, 22 — 22 permits this year, something approximately in that area,” she claimed. So, it's not 22. It's actually 842 new drilling permits that have been approved this year. Nearly 40 times higher than what Kirkmeyer claimed. In total, there are 1,314 active drilling permits held by Colorado oil and gas producers as of last week. She made a similar false claim in March, asserting that only four permits had been issued at that point in the year. The true figure was 125.Colorado's oil production levels have dipped slightly from their 2019 peak, but remain near historic highs. Producers within the state are on pace to pump more than 156 million barrels of crude oil out of Colorado this year. That's higher than every other year prior to 2018, and it's more than five times the volume being pumped in Colorado ten years ago. Drillers have reduced growth plans and capital budgets in large part due to the demands of Wall Street investors, who flooded the industry with cheap credit amid the 2010s fracking boom, but have since sought to prioritize more profitable streams of revenue.Kirkmeyer claimed that SB-181 “killed thousands of jobs” in the 8th District, which encompasses an area in north metro Denver and Weld County that is home to the vast majority of Colorado's oil production. Asked why the same trends were observed in drilling-friendly states like Texas and Wyoming recently, Kirkmeyer said, “I have no idea what other laws, or what other kinds of regulations, or what else was going on in those states.” Kirkmeyer also denied the scientific consensus on fossil fuels and climate change. Dr. Caraveo, the Democratic candidate, is a pediatrician who has seen the impacts of drilling and refinery operations in the lungs of the innocent kids who come into her clinic. The Suncor refinery, one of Colorado's largest sources of air pollution, is located within the new district. Dr. Caraveo said 2019's oil and gas reform bill was moderate, and incorporated industry input. The 8th District, the boundaries of which were drawn last year by Colorado's first-ever Independent Redistricting Commission, is the state's most competitive. According to the commission's analysis, former President Donald Trump would have won the district by 1.7 percentage points in the 2016 election, while Democratic Sen. John Hickenlooper would have carried the district by the same margin in his defeat of former GOP Sen. Cory Gardner in 2020. Nonpartisan elections analysts rate the race as a toss-up.ARIZONA MIRROR:Oath Keepers are planning to watch drop boxes in Arizona, spurred by conspiracy theories. The groups' violent rhetoric has advocates worried, and some local politicians are stirring the pot. The increased attention to ballot drop boxes comes in the wake of the debunked film “2000 Mules” about a completely made up ballot stuffing operation supposedly benefitting Democratic candidates. Now, groups are organizing events to keep an eye on drop boxes in Arizona. One of those groups is connected directly to the Arizona chapter of the Oath Keepers, a known white supremacist group. They're calling their midterm voter intimidation efforts “Operation Drop Box.” On its website the group members describe themselves as “conservative patriots” who say the country has been hijacked global elites, communists, leftists, deep state bureaucrats, and fake news.”Jim Arroyo, the leader of the Arizona Oath Keepers said the group sent emails to everyone in the group's roster, about 1,000 people. In an Oath Keeprs meeting, Arroyo said “For the November election we would like to post people at drop boxes to have eyes on target to be able to notify law enforcement. We have already coordinated with Sheriff Rhodes and he told us that if we see somebody stuffing a ballot box and we get a license plate number, that deputies would make an arrest and there will be a prosecution.” County Sheriff David Rhodes has spoken to the Arizona chapter of the Oath Keepers on two separate occasions. In an August 2021 meeting, he said “I've got to tell you, this is one of my favorite groups. It is great to be with friends” When asked about coordination between the Sheriff, Lions of Liberty and the Oath Keepers. County spokesperson Kristin Greene said “Sheriff Rhodes has zero to do with their effort to watch the drop boxes.”Rhodes also spoke to the group in late September, a meeting which the Sheriff's Office said was to educate the group on what was legal and what was not legal for the group to do. The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office told the group members that as long as they stay 75 feet away from the drop boxes, they are within their legal rights, but any closer and they could be violating the law. The county is also at the center of another effort led by former Graham County Sheriff Richard Mack, who leads the so-called Constitutional Sheriffs Association, an extremist anti-government group. CSPOA and the Oath Keepers have long had close ties.State Sen. Kelly Townsend, a Republican, called on “vigilantes” to camp out on drop boxes. At a legislative hearing all about indulging wild conspiracy theories, she said, “I have been so pleased to hear about all you vigilantes out there that want to camp out at these drop boxes. We're going to have hidden trail cameras, we are going to have people parked out there watching you and they are going to follow you to your car and get your license plate, so don't try it. Don't try it anymore.” Lake Havasu Republican Sonny Borrelli has also made similar calls while at an election security forum. “We need to be force multipliers,” Borrelli told the crowd in Tempe. “We need to have people camped on unmanned drop boxes and camp on those and keep an eye on them and take down that data, license plates, pictures and so on and so forth.”Concerned voter advocates are advising that .ocal law enforcement may not be the best option for a voter to turn to, if you end up feeling intimidated at the polls - instead suggesting contacting local election officials, the election protection hotline, or federal law enforcement. Voter intimidation is a federal crime, one that is enforced by the FBI and Department of Justice. When asked for comment about the situation with white supremacists camping out at ballot drop boxes, United States Attorney for Arizona Gary Restaino said “Enough with the election deniers and fear-mongers, who only seek to undermine our democratic process. I'm proud to live in a state that endeavors to remove barriers to voting, and that has long believed in vote-by-mail. Working in partnership with our state and local election officials, the Department of Justice will do its very best to ensure that every eligible voter who chooses to vote can do so easily and efficiently, without interference or discrimination.”Most importantly, voters shouldn't let wackos like the Oath Keepers and so-called Constitutional Sheriffs keep you from participating in American democracy. “Talking Walls” Lilly Winwood grew up in the English Coutnryside, a locale that was lush, expansive and quiet. The hum and groove of a big city was calling, so at 18 she left home for a little more social and artistic volume. After a few stops in a few years she ended up in Nashville, which was not only a comfortable place—her mom was from Tennessee and she visited regularly as a kid—it was a place filled with like-minded artists. Lilly Winwood has been on a creative tear—her debut Time Well Spent was assured and filled with promise and her follow up Talking Walls is a massive leap forward. Shimmering with wisdom and maturity, Talking Walls is filed with equal parts strength and maturity. Bringing to mind Kasey Chambers or Patty Griffin, Talking Walls isn't afraid to confront the big questions and the results are massively satisfying. A rollicking, melodic and decidedly memorable set, Talking Walls is a refreshing blast of roots rock thats as fresh as it is timeless. Lilly Winwood has done a lot already in her career—she sang back up for her dad Steve Winwood and even opened for him on occasion. She's also toured with Jackie Greene and Todd Snider and was on the bill for the All Star Neil Young Tribute show. With a voice thats imbued with power and life, Winwoods' delivery is breezy and ageless and her songs remind us that life can put you through it but the good stuff is waiting on the other side. www.lillywinwood.org www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Entry #32 documents the difference between "subject matter" and "angle of attack." If you don't have a great subject, then create one. After that, it's all about the angle at which you attack the subject. That's what makes artists (and everyone) unique. Some people can see the angle and some people can't, lol. Todd Snider says he loves playing Rams Head On Stage, and he will be doing it again for a nearly sold-out crowd on Monday, April 18th. We hopped on the phone with Todd just before he took off to see a Cowboy Junkies show in New Hampshire to catch up on his incredible year-long tour (necessitated by a tornado that tore down his Nashville home), who lead the music mob back in the day (spoiler: Johnny Cash) and who leads it today and what it means to be in his basement! A career that has spanned decades, Snider is a troubadour who found someone who saw potential in an open mic night way back when, and he never looked back!
