This week on Black & Published, Nikesha speaks with Dolen Perkins-Valdez, about her new historical fiction novel, Happy Land. The books is based on the true story of how a group of Black people founded their own Kingdom on more than 200 acres of mountain land that straddled North and South Carolina. In writing Happy Land, Dolen is correcting the historical record about the origins of the Happy Land settlers that has stood as the final word 75 years. How she learned about this intentional Black settlement and the research she says is still required. Plus, the reason Dolen believes land ownership represents the possibility of Black imagination. And, how the kingdom of the happy land may provide a Blueprint for Black people today living in this time of crisis. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Dolen Perkins Valdez back to the program today. Dolen is an associate professor of English literature at American University, but our listeners better know her as an award-winning, critically-acclaimed novelist. Her previous works are Wench, Balm, and Take My Hand. Today we'll be discussing her latest release, Happy Land, which is published by Berkley.
When Nikki travels to visit her grandmother in western North Carolina, she expects answers about her family's history. But instead, she uncovers her connection to the Kingdom of the Happy Land, a community of formerly enslaved people. Dolen Perkins-Valdez's new novel Happy Land follows Nikki as she delves deeper into family secrets. The author says she was inspired by the true story of an autonomous Black community that once lived in the mountains of Appalachia. In today's episode, Perkins-Valdez joins NPR's Michel Martin for a conversation about how the author first heard of this little-known chapter in North Carolina history. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
We were thrilled to talk with author Eowyn Ivey about her new book, BLACK WOODS BLUE SKY. During our conversation, Eowyn shared her writing habits, including a description of her writing cottage, and tells us about her reading life. Topics ranged from motherhood on the page and in real life, her family's literary life in Alaska, and Proust vs Joyce. In our own reading lives, we both read and discuss “The North Mail” by Amelia B. Edwards from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: from Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We gave this one four paws up. Or should it be eight paws? Whatever the rating system should be for cougars, we both enjoyed Edwards's story. It has a good creep factor and atmosphere, both indoors and outside. Other books we've enjoyed include novels HAPPY LAND by Dolan Perkins-Valdez and THE GRIFFIN SISTERS GREATEST HITS by Jennifer Weiner; a quartet of novellas, OLD NEW YORK by Edith Wharton; and two works of nonfiction: STORYWORTHY: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew Dicks and DEEP WORK: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. Big thanks to this episode's sponsor, James Crews and Brad Peacock. The new poetry collection they co-edited is available on May 6: LOVE IS FOR ALL OF US: Poems of Tenderness and Belonging from the LGBTQ+ Community and Friends (with illustrations by Lisa Congdon). We also recap a great Biblio Adventure to the Mark Twain House to hear Ethan Rutherford (author of NORTH SUN, OR THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER) in conversation with Amity Gaige about her new novel, HEARTWOOD. Chris also got to attend THE MOUNT'S virtual book club discussion of Edith Wharton's A SON AT THE FRONT and Willa Cather's ONE OF OURS, led by Anne Schuyler and Julie Olin-Ammentorp. As always, there are more books inside this episode than we can fit here! Enjoy, and be sure not to miss our conversation with Eowyn Ivey at the end. Oh, and reminder: our second quarter readalong pick is THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due (Zoom discussion on 6/8 and also on Goodreads). Episode 57 An illegal nightclub in the Bronx was the scene of the largest mass murder in US HIstory at the time it occurred in 1990. A scorned lover went to the club to persuade his ex-girlfriend to take him back and when his attempts were unsuccessful, he did the unthinkable. With a bottle he found in the street and a dollar worth of gasoline purchased at a nearby gas station, he returned to the club and committed an arson attack that would claim 87 lives. What could drive a man to such drastic measures and how could one fire be so deadly? Listen to this week's episode on the Happy Land Social Club Fire to find out. One man may be responsible for setting the fire, but a series of failures by city officials contributed to the scope of the tragedy. This podcast is a true crime podcast about arson and criminal fires. Listener discretion is recommended. This week, we look at a British Olympic diver, who took the country by storm, as a teenager. He married an Olympic gymnast, and set out to have the perfect life. They did traveling acrobatic shows, then settled on making a business out of making kids into Olympians, with their gym. This was going great, until many, many women accuse him of taking them into a basement called "Happyland", back when he "coached" them.Be a national hero by the time you're barely a teenager, marry a medal winning gymnast, and destroy both your legacy & the lives of a lot of people, all at the same time!!Check us out, every Tuesday! We will continue to bring you the biggest idiots in sports history!! The urban visionary crowd suffered a humiliating setback last week in their campaign to convince Winnipeg residents that a slip lane for cars is the most dangerous aspect of life in Osborne Village, and that expressing public safety concerns is fearmongering. The Gas Station Arts Centre said no to gaslighting the public and yes to a permanent redesign of the exterior courtyard entrance to fence off the space used as part of the notorious 'Circle" on River Avenue. As Marty Gold explains, even the most left-wing arts groups find out they have to draw the line for their social activism when campouts, open fires, drug dealing, and soiled mattresses are outside their door. “What we're looking at is establishing our courtyard for our patrons,” said Executive Director Nick Kowalchuk. “What I want is a patron to feel comfortable." 9.40- A man from Kitchener-Waterloo previously passed on a job offer at the Gas Station, and you'll hear why. It wasn't because of the slip lane. Violent crime went up over 50% in the Village, and now even MSM is being forced to report it as the reason Starbucks- packed from morning to night with customers - shuttered their store. Bike lanes are not going to help improve the quality of life for people who live and work in the area as long as social disorder - especially caused by homeless troublemakers -continues unchecked. 16.00 - The problems caused by homeless campers was amplified near the University of Manitoba by competing visions for public safety. An effort by Street Links to relocate one disruptive bunch in Glengarry Park to secure accommodations was derailed by a competing organization that showed up, the Main Street Project. While the Free Press presented it as a mere difference of approach, CBC actually provided a narration from area Coun. Janice Lukes that exposed how MSP swooped in, telling the campers, "'No, you don't need to go, you have rights. Your right is to stay on this encampment and stay here. And here, do you want some coffee and cookies?'" "(We) take a human rights-based approach to supporting community members,” claimed a spokesperson, but what they mean is, the human rights of the campers. The residents? Well, since without homeless people, MSP would lose its funding, their human rights don't count. "I've stayed indoors a lot more than I normally would... We lived here for years without locking our front door, and we don't go anywhere without locking our front door now." Despite what Lukes called "astronomical" health risks, Winnipeg administrators have "no plans to make the encampment residents leave the site." Marty asks how long open sewage and property crime near the homes of Mayor Scott Gillingham or Premier Wab Kinew would be tolerated before the encampments would be evicted. We know the answer- and so do they. ******* Following up on our coverage of the city abandoning Happyland Pool, Marty Gold wrote this column in the Winnipeg Sun on July 7 - The sad story of St. Boniface's Happyland pool, as area residents have hoisted banners pointing the finger at the Mayor and area Councilor Matt Allard for the closure. The column has gotten a lot of attention, as have the banners. ******* We keep politicians, bureaucrats and MSM on their toes, and it's all done with the financial support of listeners, readers and residents who know we will be their voice. Our Season 5 Fundraising Target is $5600. It is a tight budget that keeps the bills paid, and keeps us on the beat in service of the community. You can help us out today! Episode 113 By the Shores of Silver Lake, chapter 4 "End of the Rails" Join us this week as we discuss the role of firemen, "There Is a Happy Land", Mary's sensitive fingers, and the cost of the meal.
If there is one kind of death that summons in us the most frantic of fears, its the prospect of dying by fire. Anyone who has been burnt will testify that the pain is so intense, that the thought of being engulfed in flames is terrifying. It was a feeling that club goers felt on one dreadful night in New York. A night that should have been filled with dancing and fun ended with the deaths of 87 people. Most were under the age of 25. This was no accident. It was a calculated act of arson driven by rage and revenge. This is the story of when hell came to Happyland. She is currently working on promoting The American Queen with Thomas Nelson (HarperCollins). The American Queen by Vanessa Miller In 1869 a kingdom rose in the South. And Louella was its queen. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love, not even for the honorable Reverend William, whom she likes and respects enough to marry. But when William finally listens to Louella's pleas and leads the formerly enslaved people off the plantation, Louella begins to replace her hate with hope. Hope that they will find a place where they can live free from fear. Hope that despite her many unanswered prayers, she can learn to trust for new miracles. Soon, William and Louella become the appointed king and queen of their self-proclaimed Kingdom of the Happy Land. Though they are still surrounded by opposition, they continue to share a message of joy and goodness and fight for the freedom and dignity of all. On the evening of March 24, 1990, nearly one hundred patrons gathered to celebrate Carnivale at the Happy Land Social Club, a small informal night club in the Bronx that catered to a mostly Honduran clientele. The evening took a deadly turn when, around 3:30 am, an explosion of fire roared up the stairway leading to the second-floor club, blocking the only exit from the building and trapping the patrons in a room rapidly filling with toxic smoke and fire. It's unknown how many patrons managed to escape the fire, but by the time the fire department had extinguished the blaze, eighty-seven people were dead.Thank you to the amazing Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBarbanel, Josh. 1990. The wholesale destruction of the Archwood and Dufresne neighborhoods in St Boniface - the small residential communities north and south of Happyland Park - by a proposed Marion Freeway was averted in 2015/16. So instead, city bureaucrats have resorted to a new tactic - incremental erosion of the area through budget cuts, even while the City trumpets the massive infill development at the Canada Packers site across Archibald. In Episode 29 you'll hear about the devastating and cruel decision to demolish the outdoor pool at Happyland Park, despite support for the neighborhood from the Manitoba Metis Federation and the infill project leader. Marty Gold tells about the pleas of residents, who even offered to raise the $82,000 cost to keep the pool open. The concept of a new aquatic centre near Provencher Blvd. far from Happyland Park means one thing - no relief in the summer for the poor and working class losing their pool, because it will require paying to get in. As a councilor wrote, "The Mayor has provided each of the fifteen councillors with a piece of his approximately 1.27% operating property tax increase, but it is chump change if one wants to provide children with pleasurable experiences." We put the failure of St. Boniface Councilor Matt Allard to save the pool under the microscope. Under his watch, and his extremist focus on "climate change" and bike lanes instead of real issues affecting residents and businesses, the Marion-Goulet corridor continues to decline into becoming the North End of the South End. City Council chose to undermine the biggest reason families use Happyland Park. It appears to be part of a larger plan to kill the park, and force out the working class and seniors- and as one resident told us it's “Creating a city people aren't going to want to stay in.” This work is entirely funded by YOUR support. Check out our redesigned Donate page - it's easier than ever to help us continue to serve the public. 27:33 Part 2 - We review the fiery comments from Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt after Wednesday's vote, where he decried "a mean-spirited budget, with attacks on working families and their neighborhoods." "Had we not made the investment in Transcona by building the Transcona Aquatic Park, they would have tried to close that former old outdoor pool too, but now it's just too popular thanks to the reinvestment." Hearkening to a prior era when "we had at City Hall strong City Councilors", Wyatt also took a shot at the current crop including Allard: "Former Councillors would have stood up and fought for their communities, instead of the group we have today who rolled over today in the face of the cuts being made in the budget and to their communities." We also have some insight from Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie about the trade-offs councilors have to make with pools, splash pads, and being outside of the controlling bloc at council. Episode 29 concludes with interesting feedback to our analysis of Wab Kinew's Gaza Gambit, and a renewed push for our fundraising drive as we pass the halfway point. $1800 is still needed to meet our costs. Marty Gold is committed to investigating and reporting on the serious concerns in our neighborhoods, bringing the stories MSM can't or won't forward to ActionLine.ca and forcing those issues onto the civic and provincial political agenda. In that way, we earn your support. To send story tips, comments, and contribute support via Interac- Email martygoldlive@gmail.com

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail. Well greetings, you ever-curious Herle Burly-ites! I'm excited about this pod and the conversation we're about to have, for a couple of reasons. First is, our guest today is the ONLY GUEST we've ever had on the show, or likely WILL EVER have, who has stepped foot in my hometown of Prelate, Saskatchewan — rural municipality of Happyland, current population, about 154. I've talked about this here before … my Dad was the Reeve of Happyland! The great John Ibbitson joins us.We're going to look back on the DiefenPearson years. John's new book is “The Duel: Diefenbaker, Pearson, and the Making of Modern Canada.” About how these 2 leaders, fierce rivals who came from very different places and backgrounds, worked to establish policy and political norms that built the country we all recognize today. We'll talk about all of that and we'll also talk about how, in this current climate of political polarization, those norms may be under threat. You all know John. One of this country's foremost authors and journalists. He's currently a Writer-at-Large for the Globe and Mail. He also served as Chief Political Writer, Political Affairs columnist and Bureau Chief in both Washington and Ottawa. John's previous books include the number 1 bestselling “The Big Shift” (with Darrell Bricker), and “The Polite Revolution: Perfecting the Canadian Dream”. And among a ton of other accolades, he's a winner of the Governor General's Award, and he's been shortlisted for the Donner Prize and National Newspaper Award.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast.
