Our guest this week hails from Tobias, Nebraska, a town of about 100 people. Evan Bartels is a singer-songwriter who with his 2017 debut, 'The Devil, God & Me,' burst onto the national scene. More recently, Bartels has expanded his audience with the release of his EP, 'To Make You Cry,' recorded after relocating to Nashville and reflecting on a period of personal upheaval and renewal. Bartels has toured with American Aquarium, The White Buffalo, and John Moreland; he records for MCA/Universal; and he's performed at Mile of Music, AmericanaFest, and the C2C Festival. 'No Depression' calls him "a haunting new presence in Americana," while Americana Highways praises his "unvarnished, soul-bearing songwriting." 'Glide Magazine' notes his "ability to turn bruised experience into stark, resonant beauty." I caught up with Evan Bartels a few months ago for The Working Songwriter to hear about his musical journey so far.
This episode needs no introduction: Shooter Jennings joins Donnie and Dave to discuss his dad's cache of recordings, the process of bringing together three albums' worth of new Waylon Jennings music, and his feelings about the first installment, Songbird. Shooter talks at length about the discovery of Waylon's previously unreleased music, his relationship with his legendary dad and his own role as a father of two. This one was big for the Country Music Dads, as there couldn't be a more perfect topic for this podcast. Show Notes1:24 -- Shooter tells us about the discovery of these songs and how the Songbird project came together. 6:12 -- Dave says it was surreal to hear these songs in 2025. Shooter felt the same way. And then he knew he had to share this with others so they could have the same experience. 8:26 -- The Myth vs. The Man: Shooter explores what fans might be able to take from these projects. 10:42 -- Shooter's childhood on the road and why he's tired at shows regardless of how much sleep he gets. 12:20 -- Waylon the Artist vs. Waylon the Dad. Shooter kept true to the art but modernized it a bit — “letting the music on the tape talk.” That said, the experience of going through this chapter of his dad's life was very special to Shooter. 20:07 -- As a producer, the process of this project was a bit different for Shooter because Waylon is no longer with us; he is his father, and there was so much more material than usual. So he wanted to make it last to “make it like Waylon is here for a minute.” 23:00 -- Donnie asked about how relationships impact Shooter's production style. He specifically pointed to Turnpike Troubadour's last two albums and the fan backlash after Cat in the Rain. Shooter's direct and honest answer provides an interesting view into his producing style.28:58 -- The Dads ask Shooter how the production on the next albums fit together and how they tell a story. We also learn that there are several other projects to come from this collection of recordings, including songs by his mother, Jessi Colter. It's like a little Marvel Universe of Waylon Jennings, they joke. But wouldn't that be cool?30:40 -- How this project impacts Shooter's legacy and his kids' vision of him. 36:30 -- What's next for Shooter? He's working with Charley Crockett and BJ Barham of American Aquarium again.Thank you for listening. This week BJ Barham, the lead singer of American Aquarium, stops by to talk about his run for town board. What's it like to be in The Rolling Stone the same week you're being called a Communist for pointing out that local officials are giving sweetheart land deals to their relatives? We get into it. Before that: Jelly Roll-based psyops, the No Kings protests vs. Operation A.I. Sky Diarrhea, and the cartels' (fake? fake.) bounties on CPB.Support the show
On this episode we have on BJ Barham from the band American AquariumBJ gave lots of stories about growing up and how he was raised and what changes he's making in his parenting style for his daughter. For example, they give a lot of space for his daughter to express and explain herself and they see her carry that confidence of knowing she's listened to into the classroom and the world. We talked about how he started to get that respect from his parents in high school and how that changed him. We also discussed how having your kid travel the world with you teaches them, our mutual love of National Parks, almost completing his goal to see every national park with his family, and life on tour.BJ is a full time musician who is either touring, making albums, spending time with family, or running for political office in Wendell North Carolina. Kai Crowe-Getty is a songwriter from rural Virginia. The themes he weaves into his music explore the geography and culture of the rural south. It's mindful and introspective. Today we talk about his new album, and his work with artists like American Aquarium, and Chuck Ragan. I hope you dig it!
Episode 322: Texas songwriter Vincent Neil Emerson graduated from playing on the streets and in the bars of Fort Worth to tours with Colter Wall and American Aquarium and then a well-received debut album (2019's Fried Chicken And Evil Women). That inspired none other than Rodney Crowell and Shooter Jennings in turn to take an interest in producing the young country troubadour, resulting in a self-titled release in 2021 and the more recent The Golden Crystal Kingdom of 2023. They heard what I hear - an artist pxrocessing his past and making his struggles universal, a singer with an honest voice and a distinct point of view. He paused during his ongoing touring to sit down with WMOT after a show at Skinny Dennis.
Sarah, a touring videographer and photographer, shares her journey and insights into building a successful career in the music industry. She discusses the importance of celebrating wins along the way while continuing to push for new goals.• Building relationships is more important than technical skills in the touring world• Starting in small venues with bad lighting develops crucial problem-solving abilities• Networking with bands, crew members, and other industry professionals opens unexpected doors• Monetizing knowledge through platforms like Patreon can be valuable when people constantly ask for advice• Learning through trial and error builds more versatile skills than starting at the top• The music industry is small - your reputation (good or bad) follows you everywhere• Success comes from hard work, not luck - being in the right place consistently creates opportunitiesCheck out the songs of the week: "Minerva" by Deftones, "The Luckier You Get" by American Aquarium, and "Pride" by Lexx and "Sticky" by Tyler the Creator.Song of the Week Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7lDyWnUnAmvuUkf8wj7ilK?si=df11343db17c4df0Follow us on social media- Instagram Josh: https://www.instagram.com/1413_visuals/Sam: https://www.instagram.com/samantha.with.a.camera/- FacebookJosh: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=1413%20visualsSam: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551623922249Watch the Episodes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNEbTpI9bZA7POvKaNto2RQ
Songwriters and storytellers are at the core of Americana music. Few conversations in the genre go very long without the mention of names like John Prine, Jason Isbell, Gillian Welch and others. Most of those folks flocked to Nashville at one time or another to get a publishing deal, cut some records and try to make it in music. Gabe Lee never had to flock to Nashville. He was born and raised there. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, his mother a pianist, Lee studied to be a classical concert pianist as a kid. Adolescence derailed those plans and Gabe joined garage bands and caught the music bug in a different way. He now has emerged as one of Nashville's most promising singer-songwriters. His four albums have shown a maturation into an artist who has been compared to the Prines, Isbells and Welches of the world. He even tells a story of his in-laws thinking of him as the Asian John Prine, a title he's proud to represent. Lee sat in with Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about his upbringing and influences, his albums and his music. We discussed everything from listening rooms to college professors. Lee's latest album Drink the River came out in 2023. He says he's intentionally taking time to build up a catalogue of “bangers” for a new LP, which he admits may not come out for another year. But he continues to drop singles, play tours opening for the likes of American Aquarium and dotting music festivals, and sit in with cool podcasts. Frank and Falls also talk about their own musical abilities (or lack thereof) and offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week. This is episode 2 of our mini-series of conversations compiled around a different theme each episode. This week we dive into the business of DIY, and stories of different artists that have built successful, sustainable careers outside of the major label, stereotypical "right" career path. We hear from Jesse Boykins III talk about leaving and standing up to Def Jam Records and Universal Publishing, Laura Veirs on owning her publishing throughout and starting her own label, the blue collar DIY sustainability that Joe Pug has mastered, and how BJ Barham (American Aquarium) has managed to build a six-figure DIY empire (both record sales/touring and merch)! You can find a link to our full conversations with each of them below, and playlists of other past conversations grouped by topic on our YouTube channel, also below.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:Jesse Boykins III - episode 67Laura Veirs - episode 44Joe Pug - episode 10BJ Barham - episode 7Click here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. BJ Barham is the creative force behind one of my all time favorite bands American Aquarium. BJ was on my short list of dream guests when I started this thing back in 2016 and I was thrilled that he agreed to be my very first Marinade guest! American Aquarium released perhaps my favorite of their albums The Fear of Standing Still earlier this year. BJ is a man who is dedicated to his craft and each album showcases the growth he and his band have attained. He is an inspiration and I am honored to have gotten to know him a little over the years. Today's episode begins with an extended rant from Steven about a big pet peeve: The conflation of music taste with personal morality and/or ideology. This came up multiple times this week, first with Charli XCX's apparent endorsement of Kamala Harris and the deep investigation into JD Vance's Spotify playlists (2:17). After Steven's rant, Ian shares his review of EA Sports College Football 25 and how it might impact his music writing career (17:40).The guys then talk about new albums from Jack White and Childish Gambino, and the diverging paths both artists are taking in 2024 (22:20). They also discuss two records that turned 10 this week, Joyce Manor's Never Hungover Again and Alvvays' Alvvays, and the value of song power over short-term cultural relevancy (35:45). In the mailbag, a listener asks Steven and Ian to recount their biggest musical disagreements (45:40).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the latest from Ben Seratan and Sinai Vessel while Steven stumps for Wand and American Aquarium (54:45).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
