Welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's FridayApril 30th, and we're here with local news, events, announcements, jobs, and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado.    Today - A former police officer-turned paraprofessional who used to tutor local students has been arrested.    Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at www.elevateinternet.com.   Now, our feature story…   A former police officer-turned paraprofessional who once helped tutor students at Cedaredge High School was arrested.    His name is Shawn Sanchez, and he's been arrested for sexual assault on a child.   So far, formal charges have not been filed.   According to the arrest affidavit, Sanchez denied anything physical between himself and the girl.   But that's not what the arrest affidavit says. He allegedly manipulated a teenager into sending him topless photos. Sanchez also allegedly texted her an inappropriate photo of himself. Finally, there's an accusation of inappropriate touching.   His arrest came after an investigation that began in 2019 with a tip to Colorado's Safe2Tell hotline.   Cedaredge Police Department Officer Stewart Byrge began an investigation back in the summer of 2019.    Early on Sanchez's phone was searched by police.   It's unclear what happened next, but Sanchez did stop working for the school district before 2020.   Byrge said that the mother of the reported victim reacted initially with denial. She thought the reports were false and the result of other students trying to harass Sanchez. But ultimately, she and her husband took their daughter to the Cedaredge Police Department. They also went to the Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center for interviews.    The girl's father agreed to turn over her phone for a forensic search.   According to Byrge the girl was getting extra help with schoolwork from Sanchez.   She reported that she would send Sanchez pictures to avoid upsetting him.   The teenager also disclosed being touched inappropriately during a science class.   Police later interviewed a friend of the victims. And the friend supported the allegations.   Sanchez voluntarily went to CPD for interviews and allegedly admitted there were some inappropriate photos and sexual content on the phone.    But he denied anything physical.   Sanchez's final interview was in February this year. He again denied physically touching the girl.   He's due in court once again on May 11th.   Stay up to date on this story by visiting us at montrosepress.com   -   Now, some local history. There, he and his wife started a new company, Mrs. Stover's Bungalow Candies, which operated out of Clara Stover's kitchen in their bungalow, making boxed chocolates. In 1925, the couple opened a candy factory in Denver and another one in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1931, the company moved its headquarters to Kansas City.   During the 1940s, the name of the company was officially changed to Russell Stover Candies.   When Russell Stover died in 1954, the company that bore his name was producing 11 million pounds of candy annually and selling its products through 40 Russell Stover shops and in about 2,000 department stores.    Now, the sale has finalized on the former Russell Stover candy shop in Montrose… but the future of the property is in the air. Visit us at Montrosepress.com to read the full story.   -   And finally, before we go we'd like to remember the life of    William Prescott Allen the third. Scott was a lifetime Montrose resident.   He had a memorable childhood growing up here. He had an adventurous spirit with a great sense of humor. He spent his time in treehouses, cub scouts, wrestling, flying remote control airplanes, participating in many different clubs, and riding motorcycles on Flat Top.    Scott and many of his lifetime friends were known to be pranksters.   Upon graduation from Montrose High School in 1967, Scott attended Fort Lewis College where he majored in dentistry. Later he attended Mesa Junior College where he received his AA.    Scott was then accepted into CU with a major in journalism-business. During his time at CU, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany. After being honorably discharged, Scott returned to CU where he graduated with a degree in journalism-business.   In 1974 Scott began his career working at the Montrose Daily Press. He became the third-generation publisher of his family, and the fourth publisher of the Montrose Daily Press.    Scott was a very active member in the community. He was a lifetime Elks member, and served on dozens of committees..   Scott met the love of his life, Carol, in 1975 and they were married soon after. He felt blessed to become a dad to the three children from a previous marriage. Scott and Carol later welcomed two additional children to their family. Together they all loved taking long distance road trips in the six-pack cab over camper and camping in the Cimarrons.   Upon selling the Daily Press and retiring in 1997, Scott and Carol purchased a 5th-wheel and began traveling together along with their dog Emma. But after discovering retirement was not for him, Scott started driving for Hertz and Mountain Limo which he loved. He also was employed for 11 years at Safeway.   Those who knew Scott, knew of him by his generosity, kindnesses, thoughtfulness, his wittiness and his amazingly wonderful great big smile!   Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate his life. -   That's all for today, thank you for listening! Colorado has a long history of high-profile mass shootings: King Soopers grocery store in Boulder on Monday, Columbine High School in 1999, the Aurora movie theater in 2012. Colorado has more mass shootings per capita than all but four states, according to a 2019 analysis by the Denver Post.  As these shootings take place, it’s a grave reminder of the need to invest in preventative infrastructure, such as a system where concerned parties can report their observations, and trained professionals can assess threats. That’s all according to Susan Payne, a former law enforcement officer and founder of Colorado’s Safe2Tell program.
