Charles Wesley Westerman moved around quite a bit before ultimately settling down in Wilson County a few years after the Civil War. Among many things, he was a farmer, soldier, wagoner, lawman, churchman, and builder, whose story was researched and compiled by his great-great-granddaughter, Margie Hayden of Fairview. Charles was born April 18, 1834, in Lincoln County, Tenn., two months after his father was shot and killed in a case of mistaken identity. Workforce Solutions Alamo reports the December 2025 unadjusted unemployment rate for Wilson County is 3.5 percent, decreasing from 3.9 percent in November 2025. Wilson County's December rate is lower than the 3.6 percent unemployment rate for the 13-county Workforce Development Area, including Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, McMullen, Medina, and Wilson counties, and lower than the 3.9 percent unemployment rate for the state of Texas. A Wilson County man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for continuous family violence. Travis Franke, 41, pleaded no contest Feb. 10 to a charge of continuous violence against the family, a third-degree felony, and asked that his sentence be determined by the judge. Evidence was presented by the 81st Judicial District Attorney's Office, including several witnesses, and exhibits of photos and medical records. Wilson County Auditor Brenda Treviño and Pct. 3 Commissioner Jeffery Pierdolla have been denied further motions related to their alleged offenses. A former Wilson County Sheriff's Office deputy faces charges of driving while intoxicated and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Rolando A. Garza had been under an administrative misconduct investigation prior to his arrest, confirmed Wilson County Sheriff Jim Stewart. Stewart could not confirm specifics of the investigation. Garza was arrested Dec. 24. He was allegedly determined to be under the influence of alcohol while driving, according to Stewart. His employment with the sheriff's office was terminated the day before, the sheriff advised. Old Man Winter — who usually gives most of Texas barely a passing taste of cold temperatures — caught the Lone Star State in an icy grip this past weekend. An arctic blast, attributed to Winter Storm Fern, sent temperatures across Texas plunging, in some places into the single digits, and Wilson County was no exception. Wilson County is now under a 91-day burn ban. The ban, approved by the Wilson County commissioners Monday, Jan. 26, is effective immediately. Under a burn ban, outdoor burning of brush, agricultural and construction waste, and other material is prohibited. Burning of trash is allowed, but must be in a screened container or pit. Outdoor burning of trash is permitted only in unincorporated areas; no burning of trash or other materials is permitted within city limits at any time.
