THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY Pastor: Rev. Dr. Jane Ellen Nickell Scripture: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 & Mark 1:14-20 Sermon: “Good Answer” -Rev. Dr. Jane Ellen Nickell
"Who are your people?" For the longest time, you LIVED in the same place where you were born. You were rooted and connected to a household. “Who are your people” was the most common question asked (even in America). All that changed after WW2. Now the first question typically asked of an adult is, “What do you do?” But despite all the mobility we Americans have enjoyed over the past century, and despite ALL the ways we can now remain connected to people “back home” through social media, you cannot separate geography and friendship. Geography matters (when it comes to friendship).
As we continue to explore the Gospel, we need to look at how Jesus described it: A new kingdom that’s open for anyone to join by following Him. Plan to be with us on Sunday as we dive into what this Kingdom is all about and why it’s seriously good news that you and I can be a citizen of it.
David Eldridge Are you following Jesus or just walking in the same direction as Him for a time? Do you recognize Him as your King?

Calvary Chapel Greensboro verse-by-verse teaching through the Bible.
Jesus’ words were a call to see the holy ground all around, to see every common bush afire with heaven. Jesus’ words were a call to see every person around as a beloved child of God. Sinners, saints, outcasts, and rulers, all beloved children of God. Those who were willing to see had their lives changed by Jesus’ invitation to live God’s kingdom, already present, into existence. I caught the end of Amanda Gorman’s inauguration poem, and I was struck by the invitation she gave. It was for me an invitation to live God’s kingdom. She said: When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid The new dawn blooms as we free it For there is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it If only we're brave enough to be it Powerful words of hope and good news. See the light. Be the light. It is near. Now make it so. Jesus’ words were powerful words that the kingdom of God has come near. Then he and his friends made it so. Jesus’ words of hope and good news are here for us too, to hear, believe, and to let that belief be real enough to change our lives. “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;” “if only we're brave enough to see it If only we're brave enough to be it.”

Immanuel United Church of Christ - Shillington PA Sunday January 24th 2021 9am Worship Sermon
A healthy amount of stress is an important aspect of our life. Ten months of non-stop stress due to the COVID pandemic – not so much. The isolation and fear we have experienced has affected how we perceive life. We have a tendency to blur the lines between our sense of urgency and what is an emergency? Jesus announces, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand," with a true sense of urgency which the disciples hear and urgently respond to when called. Has the last 10 months of pandemic pressure caused you to down grade your vocation as a witness to Christ's grace from urgent to kind of important? If so, what is needed for the urgent cause of missions to succeed is a corresponding sense of urgency in us which Jesus is and which Jesus gives!

"Since the great and majestic God of the Old Testament pitched his tent among us – was born in a manger, greeted by shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night, angels filling the heavens with glorious music, and magi from the mysterious East bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh – given all this that we are told has happened, why hasn’t the world become more fully redeemed, at least in ways we can see, touch, feel?" Rev. Larry Hayward preaches on the Third Sunday after the Epiphany. The Scripture lesson is Mark 1:14-20.
The first 10 minutes of the sermon are hard to hear. We get it corrected though. You can turn up the sound, but please be aware it corrects. Jesus came to proclaim more than a Gospel of Sin Management. His message, his life is more than we could imagine.

Sent is an action word. We need to be active disciples.
This sermon is based on Mark 1:14-20, and will focus on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. The important thing to keep in mind as we think about this question is that we all -- whether we realize it or not -- have been, and are being, discipled by someone. Part of what it means to be human is that we are social beings, and we're influenced by the teaching and example of others ... and we are especially influenced by people we choose to follow. Who are you following?
"Keeping it Simple" Wednesday night services. Verse by verse teaching through the book of Mark by Assistant Pastor Darrell Logan of Calvary Queen Creek, AZ
And calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels -Mark 8:34-38

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? In this passage we see that Jesus chose simple fishermen...called them to an eternal ministry...and can only use those that heed the call. Do you have what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?

In Mark’s gospel Jesus’ call to discipleship is radical, immediate, and abbreviated. Simply, come and follow. Such a call to discipleship could be terrifying, liberating, or both. How does it seem to you?

The church needs to recommit itself to the conviction of following Jesus and sharing the gospel.
Rev. Stone continues the sermon series "Son of God, Son of Man" - a study through Mark's Gospel. In this series we will gain a better understanding of who is Jesus? And how should we respond to Him? In this sermon Rev. Stone discusses Jesus' message in terms of 1. the time, 2. the kingdom, 3. repent, and 4. believe and concludes with Jesus' call.
Jesus calls us to "Follow Me...and I will make you fishers of men." If we ask Jesus to follow us, what are we asking him to fish for?
If we do not follow, we cannot become. If we do not become and help others to as well, we dishonor Jesus.

Dare to be a Disciple: What Does it Mean to be a Christian
Here we look to Jesus as the master disciple-maker. We look to him in faith, as our Savior and our example. So, what did it look like for Jesus to train his disciples?

The first part of creation that wasn't good was that the man was alone. We were made for deep down "bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh", heart to heart connection. Without it, creation is not good. Johann Hari believes that disconnection is a root cause of addiction. While drugs play a big part, people with poor or no deep connection to others are more likely to become addicted to drugs, and folks with deep connection to others are more likely to recover from addiction. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/johann-hari/the-real-cause-of-addicti_b_6506936.html). He writes: "The rise of addiction is a symptom of a deeper sickness in the way we live -- constantly directing our gaze towards the next shiny object we should buy, rather than the human beings all around us." If ever there was a time to fish for people, it is now. Jesus came to heal our disconnection from God and our disconnection from each other. He called us to bring that good news to other and to fish for people. What does that look like? Do we invite people to church? Do we connect with friends on a deep, heart to heart level? Do we share our faith with others? Yes to all. We're not seeking to change people, but to connect with them. If someone isn't a Christian, but is your friend, invite that person to church...not to convert them, but to share with them something important to you, to connect with them on the "bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh", heart to heart level. Let them belong, even without believing. Jesus came to heal our disconnection, not to force or coerce us, but to heal us.

Jesus knew he could teach fishermen to fish for people. So what lessons might transfer that will help us fill our church nets with new followers?

Follow the leader is a children's game. First a leader or "head of the line" is chosen, then the children all line up behind the leader. The leader then moves around and all the children have to mimic the leader's actions. Any players who fail to follow or do what the leader does are out of the game. In today’s gospel lesson, we have another encounter with Jesus this time in Mark’s gospel. Jesus is beginning his public ministry, and he came into Galilee and passing along by the Sea of Galilee he called these fishermen to become fisher of men. But What Exactly was he calling them to?
Jesus gave a new command - that we love each other. What was new about that?
