Walt Williams doesn't want his video game to hate him. He just wants to be entertained. Walt Williams is a video game writer who has worked on Star Wars Battlefront, Bioshock, Civilization, Borderlands, Mafia, The Darkness, and Spec Ops: The Line. His book, Significant Zero, explores the hardships and insanity of AAA game development. Here's some stuff we talked about: Our Feelings The Mass Effect 3 ending debacle made Walt question his narrative approach in Spec Ops: The Line. Kirby All Star Allies is blowing Walt's daughter's mind. The Quarry is scratching a very specific horror movie itch Walt hasn't scratched since childhood. Start at Yakuza Zero if you want to punch people in the face to make them better people. The Last of Us: Part One's ending resonated quite a bit with Walt Depending on who you ask, Walt was kind of a monster in The Walking Dead Season One. Video Game Feelings is an Area Code Audio production. Hosted and produced by Richard Clark. Associate produced by Nettie Smith. Additional help from Ashley Whitehurst and Matthew Linder.

My guest on today's episode is Walt Williams. Walt is the writer of Spec Ops - The Line and the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront 2. He'll also be releasing a book next month called Significant Zero which is a behind the scenes look at modern AAA development which, if you're a fan of this show, you're very likely to enjoy. We talk about his early love of Adventure on the 2600, video game branded breakfast cereal, the impact of Final Fantasy 6, why Red Dead Redemption is maybe the best game, and how much he loves video games with endings. We also talk about how he almost became a preacher, why Batman is really just an enabler for the Riddler, why video game nostalgia can be so much more powerful than other mediums and how he almost didn't take the gig writing Star Wars Battlefront 2 until a tweet from John Boyega pushed him over the edge. "What happened here was out of my control..." This week's guest is an especially special one: Walt Williams, co-writer of Star Wars Battlefront II, lead writer of Spec Ops: The Line, and author of games-industry memoir Significant Zero (out Sept. 19!). Inspired by Walt's stories of youthful thievery, we focus this week's Top 5 on thieves who decided to work together and became like family in the process. (Fair warning, it takes us about an hour and 17 minutes to get there.) Then we get real chatty about Metroid: Samus Returns, new iPhones, SNES Classic reassurances, and your most memorable game-launch stories.

This week, Max, Marty, and Brian are joined by Walt Williams, the writer of Spec-Ops: The Line, Star Wars Battlefront II, and Significant Zero, a "book" about what it's like to make video games. (A book is sort of like a video game, but much quieter, and made of old trees.) MAJOR SPOILER WARNING: If you haven't finished Spec-Ops: The Line, The Last of Us, or Mass Effect 3 you might want to skip this one. Or, just bite the bullet and hear a really great in-depth discussion about storytelling in games.
