On today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with retired US Navy Commander, and author of the new fictional thriller, Secrets in Depth. His name is Joe Dituri and his laid-back persona and colorful and exciting life truly make for an interesting episode. We'll open our conversation by learning about Joe's journey as an enlisted sailor to being commanding officer in charge of the Navy's' deep submergence unit. Next, we'll unpack his transition out of the spec-op community and into the world of hyperbaric medicine. We'll then hear how Joe's involvement in a rollover car crash contributed to his researching Traumatic Brain Injuries, starting with his own. Later, we'll dive into Joe's work to help prior military servicemen and women overcome the debilitating effects of explosive concussions and why his unique approach of not just treating the psychological manifestations of the injury, but the actual physical, physiological root causes as well, has proven so effective. And we'll wrap up our conversation by discussing Secrets in Depth, a Jack Reacher-esque style thriller that weave's many aspects of Joe's life into the main protagonist character known as “The Dragon Slayer”.The Show NotesJoe Diturihttp://drdeepsea.com/NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NorthwestUnion Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. Today we hear a Combat Story from the very tip of the spear from “Dutch” Chris Moyer, a long-time special operator who spent 14 years in Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in addition to years at 1/75 Ranger Battalion, and CIA's Global Response Staff (GRS). Dutch walks us through a very open and honest approach to what it's like operating in the elite ranks for so long, including the pressure, brotherhood, and chaos. He doesn't shy away from sharing where he felt he fell short, and how, even after decades of service he still felt like he had more to give. He saw combat in multiple theaters in the pre-and post-9/11 era, fighting at the same time as and friends with many of the former Tier 1 operators we've heard on this show. Be sure to stick through to the end where we hear Dutch describe his own “Mr. Goodbar” story (if you don't know about Mr. Goodbar, check out Episode 30) where Dutch ends up in a room one on one having to fight none other than John “Shrek” McPhee (from Episode 25 https://youtu.be/6hvQj06fQUQ). It's hilarious. Dutch now runs DCM Consulting where he teaches military, government, and civilians how to apply the skills he learned in the Tier 1 community from shooting to CQB to leadership. In fact, when I reached out to Dutch I had to leave him a message and his voicemail was one of the best I've ever heard and said something like “You've reached Dutch, I can't take your call because I'm out on the range shooting, teaching CQB, or doing some other cool shit right now…” I hope you enjoy this incredible peak behind the curtain of what it's like in one of the most elite units in our military. He has taken part in over 1,000 successful combat assaults in classified & unclassified missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. He found that the Army in the 1980s was not what he had hoped. After a five-year break, he returned. This time he “Wanted to be in the worst possible places with the best possible people.” He became an Army Ranger and spent the last 14 years of his career with the elite Joint Special Operations Command. One of the key moments that led him to the Marine Corps was the death of Pat Tillman, the legendary NFL Safety who walked away from the League and joined the Army after 9/11, eventually being killed while serving as a Ranger in Afghanistan. Jake found himself leading Marines at the very front end of the “Surge” in Iraq and the bloodiest year of the wars, stepping into a kinetic environment only weeks after arriving in the theater. He was then in Helmand Province in Afghanistan as a sniper.Only two months after leaving the Marine Corps, Jake went on to found the humanitarian support organization Team Rubicon after hastily organizing what he describes as a “Motley Crew” of veterans and doctors to help the people of Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake. He recently created another charitable giving business called Groundswell which seeks to democratize philanthropic giving. In 2018, Jake was awarded the Pat Tillman ESPY for service (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Xef8StXi8), bringing his story full circle from Tillman's death that propelled Jake into this life of service. Ephraim is a singer/ songwriter who currently lives in the US. We became friends when we both lived in Spain some years back. It was one of those friendships that was natural. Kindred spirits. Our families went on vacations together, spent many long nights playing cards and drinking Spanish beer, deep conversations that would last long into the night, travelled to Belgium to see Queens of the Stone Age, and so much more. I was in a cover band while living there (Mama Zulu!) and he let us use his garage for a practice space. He's the kind of friend who you would call up when some crazy shit went down and you needed some SpecOps-level help. I feel like we've already lived multiple lifetimes in the duration of our friendship. Life has changed a lot since those days, but we've done well to keep an important and lasting friendship. This past month he released a four-song EP called “It Will Be Ok”, produced by Urban Bros Records in Rota, Spain. These songs are a product of a particularly heavy period in his life and he used music as the energy to produce art. This conversation is about music, creativity, friendship, and life. Song in between the intro/ conversation is an excerpt of the title track called “It Will Be Ok”.We recorded this conversation on Palafox Street in Pensacola, FL on St. Patty's Day weekend, 2022. You can find his music on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. His website is ephraimwertz.com. Today we have a more timely Combat Story where we sit down with the head of the Ukrainian Come Back Alive Foundation, Taras Chmut. Come Back Alive provides financing for purely defense initiatives and since 2014, it has provided nearly 1000 thermal imaging devices and over 250 UAVs in addition to material support, technology, and training for the forces fighting the Russians on Ukrainian soil. Before stepping up to lead this organization, Taras was a Ukrainian Marine rifleman on the front lines in 2015 and then a commander of a reconnaissance unit with UAVs and signals intercept capabilities providing a better picture of the battlefield mainly near Mariupol (which we've heard so much about today). This, like our interviews with Aiden Aslin and Sergey Dyadkin, help shed light on what's actually going on in this Russian invasion and give each of us a way to do something about it, this time in terms of providing support to this important foundation, which you can do at www.comebackalive.in.ua. We've conducted much of this interview through a translator named Alexander and I hope you appreciate this inside look from Kiev as much as I did. His career spanned two eras: The Cold War and the Age of Terrorism. Prado received the CIA Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal (highest award given upon retirement) and the George H. W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counterterrorism, among other awards. When he left public service, Prado worked as an executive at a private military contractor where he built a specialized operations team. He is currently a co-owner of Camp-X Training, where he continues his service training and supporting the Spec Ops community, teaching Advanced Special Operations and Techniques among other essential skills. Also, he's the author of Black Ops: The Life of a CIA Shadow Warrior. He's the first covert operator of major rank to pen a fully operational memoir in the history of the CIA. He retired as the equivalent of a 2-star general in the military. In this interview we discuss what it was like growing up in Cuba during the Revolution, how young Americans are romanced by Communism, how he and his family managed to get to America, growing up on the streets of Miami, how he found himself in the CIA, his service on the ground during the time of Iran Contra, his reaction to seeing the 9/11 attacks, how the US had the ability to easily kill Osama bin Laden in the 1990s but decided against it, and much more. Cybersecurity can seem complicated, but the truth is, many cyberattacks could be stopped with something very simple: improving password security. In fact, over the last two years, passwords were at the heart of some of the most high-profile breaches, including SolarWinds and Colonial Pipeline. And with an estimated 1 million passwords stolen every week, anyone could be the next target if they haven't taken steps to improve their password security. Darren James, a password security expert and Head of Internal IT at Specops Software, joins me on Tech Talks Daily. Darren discusses his role at Specops and what inspired him to pursue a career in security. We also discuss best practices that every business and individual should be using and why password breaches are so common.

For the first time in the Central Intelligence Agency's history, a covert operator of major rank and standing pens a fully operational memoir. Ric Prado's BLACK OPS: The Life of a CIA Shadow Warrior(St. Martin's Press) lays out this decorated hero's twenty-four career fighting in the shadows to protect a nation and home that welcomed him at his most desperate hour as a child of communist repression. In BLACK OPS, Prado shares the harrowing true stories of life in the deadly web of international assassins, spies, revolutionaries, terrorists, and killers. He reveals how he and his fellow CIA officers devoted their lives to operating in the shadows to fight a little-seen or known war to keep the U.S. safe from those intent on destroying the nation. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Enrique “Ric” Prado spent a legendary twenty-four year career in the Central Intelligence Agency spanned two era's: The Cold War and the Age of Terrorism. Today we hear a special Combat Story of one of the military's most revered leaders who many have never heard of (but should). This is the experience of retired Colonel Bill Ostlund, a beloved mentor and leader developer who served 35 years in the Army working his way up from a private and growing into combat command in some of the bloodiest fighting of any unit in the post-9/11 era. [NOTE: We're launching on Patreon soon. Register to get notified at https://www.combatstory.com/patreon] Bill's command in Kunar Province, recounted countless times in dozens of books including Sebastian Junger's War and the documentary Restrepo, resulted in over 400 awards for valor and three Medals of Honor (all living honorees). This episode is an embarrassment of riches for those who want to know what real leadership looks like; what the Burden of Command actually means; how you show up after losing a soldier six hours into a 15 month deployment; or leading joint SpecOps task forces with Delta, DEVGRU, 160th, and other Tier 1 elements over thousands of operations. Bill Ostlund will remind so many listeners of Todd Opalski in how he cared for and treated his soldiers and explains why, so many years later, his soldiers and officers still seek his advice as they step into greater roles of responsibility in the military and their personal lives. I'm honored to have had a chance to spend this time with what so many think of as the pinnacle of battlefield leadership and hope you enjoy this Combat Story on leadership as much as I did. Cameron and Israel get a lot of questions about the differences between all the special operations groups in the military. Maybe not a lot, but a fair amount. Like, if you had to put the questions in a bag, it'd be a good sized bag- you know what? We're getting side tracked .The guys give an in-depth look at what all the special operations people do, from Delta, to MARSOC to Rangers and Green Berets. A comprehensive discussion and some fun stories about working with different groups. The episode rounds out with a game of "Who do I work for?" Do you know what spec ops these fictional characters worked for at one time or another? Because Cam and Iz (mostly) do!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pcfmpodcast)
