Angie shares her journey of publishing her first novel at 50, her evolving creative process, and how her experiences as a Korean immigrant have shaped her storytelling. We talk about:  How Angie's creative process has changed from periods of intense, long hours to a more balanced approach using a timer to write for two hours a day. The importance of integrating a myriad of life experiences into creative work and never believing it's too late to write the book or create the work you dream of making. A new perspective on finding lasting happiness and joy in creative pursuits and life in general. Angiekimbooks.com Angie Kim's first novel: Miracle Creek won the Edgar Award and ITW Thriller Award and was named one of Time's "100 Best Mysteries and Thrillers of All Time." For Ep. 173, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me as we circle back to one of our favorite topics — niching down our reading into micro genres! In this special Circle Back, we revisit some previously shared micro genres from our two past Micro Genres We Love episodes and introduce two additional micro genres from a Patreon bonus episode not yet heard on the big show! We give examples that define each micro genre for us and share new books we've read that fit into these niches. Plus, we share books for that DIDN'T work for us. This episode is full of over 100 books for you to add to your TBR! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Those are the electric first words of this extraordinary novel about a biracial Korean American family in Virginia whose lives are upended when their beloved father and husband goes missing. Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything--which is why she isn't initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don't return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia's brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak. What follows is both a ticking-clock investigation into the whereabouts of a father and an emotionally rich portrait of a family whose most personal secrets just may be at the heart of his disappearance. Full of shocking twists and fascinating questions of love, language, and human connection, Happiness Falls (Hogarth Press, 2023) is a mystery, a family drama, and a novel of profound philosophical inquiry.  Happiness Falls was an instant New York Times bestseller. Angie's debut novel, Miracle Creek, won the Edgar Award, the ITW Thriller Award, the Strand Critics' Award, and the Pinckley Prize and was named one of the hundred best mysteries and thrillers of all time by Time, The Washington Post, Kirkus, and the Today show. One of Variety Magazine's inaugural “10 Storytellers to Watch,” Angie has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Vogue, Glamour, and numerous literary journals. She lives in northern Virginia with her family. Recommended Books: Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go Naoki Higashida, The Reason I Jump Daniel Mason, North Woods Hang Kan, Greek Lessons Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. Angie Kim came to fiction in her 40s, after careers in both law and business, and some challenging years mothering three boys who each faced medical complications. Her debut novel, Miracle Creek, won the Edgar Award, the ITW Thriller Award, the Strand Critics' Award and the Pinckley Prize, and was named one of the best books of the year by Time, The Washington Post, Kirkus Reviews and the “Today” show. Her second novel, Happiness Falls, came out in August by Hogarth. A NYT bestseller and Good Morning America Book Club pick, it will appeal to mystery and thriller lovers, philosophers, those active in the special needs and autism communities, and anyone who generally loves a thought-provoking and engaging read. Angie joins Marrie Stone to talk about. They discuss how both her childhood and her prior careers influence her fiction, how she used a combination of freewriting and her obsession with narrative architecture to structure this novel, how mysteries can be used as a trojan horse in fiction, using creative literary devices to reveal character in a novel, the perils and pleasures of first person, and so much more. Angie also shares her story of finding her agent, what to look for in an agent, query letters, and shares other book business insights. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

In this episode of About Your Mother, I am pleased to introduce Angie Kim. Angie's debut novel Miracle Creek was named Best Book of the Year by Time, The Washington Post, and The Today Show. It went on to win many other prizes throughout the year. Before writing Miracle Creek, Angie Kim was the former editor of Harvard Law Review and a trial attorney. She has also written for Vogue, The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Glamour, and numerous literary journals. My conversation with Angie is far and reaching, discussing things such as her life as a Korean immigrant, writing, and the myth of the Good Mother.   Reflections of the Mother The conversation begins with Angie's description of her mother and her most defining trait. For Angie, her mother's generosity and kindness have left a deep impression on her.   "I got to observe her with her customers a couple of times. I was just floored by how generous and kind she was with her customers, even sort of the cantankerous ones. She was just so kind to everyone. And everyone loved her as a result. "– Angie Kim   Angie hopes that she can do it as well with her professional relationships - going that extra mile of being kind and generous with your time can help build better bonds with others.   Miracle Creek Discussing her book, Miracle Creek, Angie shares how her life experiences inspired the book's themes; in a way, she's sharing takeaways from her life with their readers through a new world woven in the story.   "So yes, Miracle Creek is my debut novel...people say that you put a lot of yourself into your first books. That's definitely the case for me as well. I've put so many threads of my own life into this book, one of which is the whole immigrant thread. Another facet of my life that's in this novel is that of me as a mother. Then finally, the other thread that's in my novel was my first career as a trial lawyer." – Angie Kim   Angie Kim on Being a Writer Angie shares that for the longest time, she never wanted to be a writer. Even when she was going to a school with an incredible Creative Writing department, it never occurred to her to take it up. Back then, she thought writing meant just sitting in one place and writing all day, which sounded boring. She found this ironic since, as a lawyer, there was a lot of writing, just a different kind. After going through her colorful experiences in life and listening to friends be fascinated by her journey and life lessons, she decided on her next career to tackle: being a writer.   One day, when I was just having a really hard day, I just opened up my laptop and started writing about what I was upset about. And it was just so cathartic. I had never really experienced that through writing before. And I thought,…Click To Tweet   To hear more from Angie Kim and how to be kind and generous to people around you, download and listen to this episode.   Bio Angie Kim is the debut author of the international bestseller and Edgar winner Miracle Creek, named a "Best Book of the Year" by Time, The Washington Post, Kirkus, and The Today Show, among others. Her novel also won the ITW Thriller Award, the Strand Award, and the Pinckley Prize. A Korean immigrant, former editor of the Harvard Law Review, and one of Variety Magazine's inaugural "10 Storytellers to Watch," Kim has written for Vogue, The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Glamour, and numerous literary journals. Edgar award-winner Angie Kim discusses her debut novel Miracle Creek. Her courtroom drama focuses on a group of people who are part of a special treatment center with a hyperbaric chamber. This chamber helps cure a range of conditions and disabilities, but when the chamber explodes, there is evidence to believe that it was not an accident. Our host Ann Bocock sits down with Angie Kim to discuss how the novel draws on her own life as a Korean immigrant whose child underwent treatment at a hyperbaric chamber. Kim takes a hard look at motherhood, sharing the guilt and shame that mothers feel when struggling to raise a child with chronic illness and special needs. She reveals how she found community amongst these mothers and what she learned. An attorney with a Harvard Law degree, Kim also tells us know how she ended up becoming a full-time writer and reveals the challenges of writing a novel in 7 different perspectives. I am in a book club with some friends where half of them fall under the conservative Republican camp while the other half fall under the liberal Democrat camp (like me).   As someone who believes in climate change, women’s rights and the need for radical change in systemic racism, I really want to suggest a book that this whole group can read together and that will help shift the mindset of the more conservative members. I am not trying to force them into becoming liberals. I am looking for them to be more open to the possibility of climate change and that racism not only happens at an individual level, but on a systemic one. (Note, we are a group of Asian-American women, so we are POC but our political views range widely.)   To have them be more receptive to my book suggestion, I am looking for books that won’t turn them off or are too out of their comfort zone (i.e., Hood Feminism, Stamped from the Beginning, etc.). So, I’m thinking of fiction books that are compelling but not too serious. Hoping these books will allow them to really empathize with characters that live beyond their world and/or imagine a world where Fox News isn’t the only source of truth.   For reference, past books we’ve read include Little Fires Everywhere and Miracle Creek. We are currently reading Dear Girls by Ali Wong. As you can see, we don’t read any controversial books and generally like popular fiction.    I’m pretty stuck on what to choose, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!   Thanks so much, -Helen 2. So about a year and a half ago I moved to a new city. I’ve always considered myself a decently social and outgoing person, but since I moved I’ve struggled with some social anxiety. I think the continuous meeting of new people and re-figuring out how to connect with new people was very overwhelming, and at times I’ve felt like I was failing. I’m looking for a book where I can connect to the characters or writers on the basis of social anxiety. I’m imagining connecting to the main character and watching them grow/overcome their anxiety throughout the novel. Although I prefer fiction, I’m open to anything. Thanks! -Emily 3. So this is an oddly specific request. I just finished The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides and was just enthralled the whole way through. I loved what the New Yorker called the characters’ “intellectual angst” and was entranced with the unique, complex relationships between these three characters. Looking for read a-likes that feel the same as this one. In other words books that involve urban intellectuals in their twenties figuring out life and love and intimacy, where the relationships and dynamics are almost a character within themselves and maybe the whole plot (haha). I also liked how this novel and the relationships in it were very nuanced, not your standard cheesy romance. Other books I’ve enjoyed that scratch this same itch are Normal People, Conversations With Friends, The Idiot (Elif Batuman) and One Day. Thanks! -Emily 4. I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but things are kind of terrible right now. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve become interested in the lives of everyday people during ongoing difficult times in history, such as the Blitz in England, the troubles in Northern Ireland, and other places and times throughout history. I’m looking for a book to recommend for my book club that addresses this. Due to the nature of my question, I won’t ask for something that isn’t scary, but none of us is a fan of gore or children and animals in danger. Fiction or nonfiction are both welcome.    Also, let me be the millionth person to thank you for bringing Red, White, and Royal Blue into my life! I’m a DC local and it is exactly what I needed. I like remembering my city as it was before the MAGAs arrived.  -Rebecca 5. I absolutely love gothic thrillers that involve secretly badass women. Favorites include We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson , Rebecca By Daphne du Maurier and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I’m looking to find more books in this genre as we enter Halloween season! I prefer writing that is literary, but accessible. The book can be contemporary as long as it has some kind of gothic feel to it. Bonus points if it features a creepy old house! -Kate 6. Love the show! My sister and I are both really into YA fantasy, but we’ve been looking for some lighter reads in the genre and have come up pretty empty. It seems as if every YA fantasy book deals with heavy subjects, and are dark and intense. Romance is a must, but doesn’t have to be the main storyline. Thanks! -Liza 7. Hi Jen and Amanda,   I am in a reading funk and I am looking for cozy, fun reads that are dramatic but nothing really awful happens.   Something Harry Potter reminiscent would be great. Magic, fantastical elements, maybe even royalty, without the Game of Thrones gore.   I also loved Storied Life of AJ Fikry, so something about books or love of books might be fun.   Thanks so much.  -Maymuna Books Discussed Humankind by Rutger Bregman, transl. by Elizabeth Manton and Erica Moore When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer Modern Lovers by Emma Straub Blood at the Root by Patrick Phillips Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee with Carol Mithers (tw: domestic abuse) Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman Magnolia Sword by Sherry Thomas Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(Ü: Ulrike Thiesmeyer, 400 S., 22 Euro, Berlin Verlag)

In a small town in Virginia, a group of people know each other because they’re part of a special treatment center, a hyperbaric chamber that may cure a range of conditions from infertility to autism. But then the chamber explodes, two people die, and it’s clear the explosion wasn’t an accident.A powerful showdown unfolds as the story moves across characters who are all maybe keeping secrets, hiding betrayals. Chapter by chapter, we shift alliances and gather evidence: Was it the careless mother of a patient? Was it the owners, hoping to cash in on a big insurance payment and send their daughter to college? Could it have been a protester, trying to prove the treatment isn’t safe?“A stunning debut about parents, children and the unwavering hope of a better life, even when all hope seems lost" (Washington Post), Miracle Creek uncovers the worst prejudice and best intentions, tense rivalries and the challenges of parenting a child with special needs. It’s “a quick-paced murder mystery that plumbs the power and perils of community” (O Magazine) as it carefully pieces together the tense atmosphere of a courtroom drama and the complexities of life as an immigrant family. Drawing on author Angie Kim's own experiences as a Korean-American, former trial lawyer, and mother of a “miracle submarine” patient, this is a novel steeped in suspense and igniting discussion. Recommended by Erin Morgenstern, Jean Kwok, Jennifer Weiner, Scott Turow, Laura Lippman, and more-- Miracle Creek is a brave, moving debut from an unforgettable new voice. Kim is in conversation with Maddie Gobbo, events manager for Skylight Books.

It draws partly on Liz’s own experiences as a musician. It was selected for Borders’ Original Voices program and was given a starred review by Kirkus. Roddy Doyle wrote of it, “This is a remarkable novel, elegant, wise, and beautifully constructed. I loved the book.” After the publication of her debut novel, Liz obtained her MFA in Fiction from Hunter College. In 2009, she was awarded the University of Pennsylvania’s ArtsEdge residency and moved to Philadelphia. Her second novel, Heft, was published by W.W. Norton in January 2012 to popular and critical acclaim. Of Heft, The New Yorker wrote, “Moore’s characters are lovingly drawn…a truly original voice”; The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Few novelists of recent memory have put our bleak isolation into words as clearly as Liz Moore does in her new novel”; and editor Sara Nelson wrote in O, The Oprah Magazine, “Beautiful…Stunningly sad and heroically hopeful.” The novel was published in five countries, was long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and was included on several “Best of 2012” lists, including those of NPR and the Apple iBookstore. Moore’s short fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in venues such as Tin House, The New York Times, and Narrative Magazine. She is the winner of the Medici Book Club Prize and Philadelphia’s Athenaeum Literary Award. After winning a 2014 Rome Prize in Literature, she spent 2014-15 at the American Academy in Rome, completing her third novel. That novel, The Unseen World, was published by W.W. Norton in July of 2016. Louisa Hall called it “fiercely intelligent” in her review in The New York Times; Susan Coll called it “enthralling . . . ethereal and elegant . . . a rich and convincing period piece” in her review in the Washington Post. The Unseen World was included in “Best of 2016” lists by The New Yorker, the BBC, Publishers Weekly, Vox, Google Play, and Audible.com, among others. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Angie’s journey from trial attorney to novelist. How Angie found out Miracle Creek was going to be a Book of the Month pick (April). Why Angie can’t share a book she didn’t love…which led to a discussion about DNF’ing books. In today's bumper Bonus July Episode, we have three amazing interviews!Bianca first chats with bestselling and award-winning author, Ann Patchett, about her latest novel, Tom Lake. During the show, the two discuss how and why Ann wrote past and present as 'bleeding into one narrative' in her latest novel; when to show vs when to tell backstory; testing different ways of beginning a story before settling on the best place to start; breaking the writing rule of starting with a character desperately wanting something; causality and reflecting real life accurately; using specificity to intrigue the reader; and planting curiosity seeds at the right time and place. After which, Tina and Renee of Book Talk, etc. podcast, join Bianca to talk about books they love and what they found to be so compelling about them. During the episode, they discuss Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys; Thirst for Salt by Madelaine Lucas; Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi; The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton; Miracle Creek by Angie Kim; and Those Who Wish Me Dead by Michael Koryta. Finally, Ramona Ausubel joins Bianca to talk about her latest novel, The Last Animal. They also discuss story inspiration; the emotional truth of a story; plausibility and suspending disbelief; the personal universal element; intentionally choosing POV; writing a teenage protagonist for an adult novel; the relationship between a writer and their work; the evolution of a project, using Fortunately/Unfortunately for story structure; and how to avoid info dumps when trying to convey very technical information.Find us on our socials:Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_shit_about_writing/ https://www.instagram.com/biancamarais_author/ https://www.instagram.com/carlywatters/ https://www.instagram.com/cece_lyra_agent/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TSNOTYAWWebsites: www.theshitaboutwriting.com, www.biancamarais.com, www.carlywatters.com and www.cecilialyra.com Bookshop.org affiliate page: https://bookshop.org/shop/theshitnoonetellsyouaboutwritingMore information about Ann can be found at http://www.annpatchett.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/parnassusbooks/More information about Book Talk, etc. can be found at booktalkpodcast.com. They're also on Instagram @booktalketc, Twitter @booktalketc, and Facebook @booktalketc.More information about Ramona can be found at www.ramonaausubel.com.
