Welcome to season 4 episode 4 of Angel! Cordi is back...sort of...in a way. While she is back in body she can't seem to remember the Cordi we all know and love. Can the gang deal with ANOTHER major curve ball? How about the hosts? Stas isn't even the one watching for Cordi. Ariel is stepping into those fabulous shoes. Nothing is normal and we just gotta be ok with that! Thanks for listening.

Joan Didion died on December 23, 2021 at the age of 87. A chornicler of of the American zeitgeist, she was the author of several novels, including Play It As It Lays and The Last Thing He Wanted, the brilliant book-length essay on grief, The Year of Magical Thinking, and several collections of essays including Slouching Toward Bethlehem. Her screenplays include The Panic In Needle Park, True Confessions, and the 1976 A Star Is Born, most of them co-written with her husband, John Gregory Dunne. Huh. Forgive us, Scoobies. We had something we wanted to say here, but for some reason... we just... can't seem to remember? If that sounds like an accurate portrayal of amnesia to you, then surely you know that this week, Angel on Top continues its spoiler-free dissection of all things exclusively Angel the series with Season 4, Episode 4, "Slouching Toward Bethlehem." Cordelia is finally back from a higher plane, she now has amnesia, and the gang at Angel Investigations apparently learned absolutely nothing from the events of Season 3's "Fredless." But you know what else? Wes and Lilah are in *hushed tones* a relationship. So join your hosts LaToya Ferguson and Morgan Lutich (AKA the Cordelia and Fred of the Bufferingverse, AKA the Gunn Squad, and so much more) this week as they discuss inconvenient amnesia, sexy relationships, and the grimiest little pimp of all, Connor. One characteristic of large coastal, elite cities, and their international brethren, is high population churn in their gentrified precincts. People are constantly moving out, with new arrivals coming in behind them. This high turnover has several implications for the churches there. One is that they have to be constantly attracting new members in order to avoid shrinking. Another is that it's very difficult for them to sustain community. In general, it's more difficult for people to make an sustain long term, deep friendships and personal connections in those cities than it is in most places. They are good places to move for certain kinds of people: the young, people originally from there or from a nearby town, wealthy people, and people with personality types that allow them to live mostly autonomously.  The people in these cities are shallowly rooted, as we saw during the pandemic when large numbers of their most affluent residents abandoned them. This calls into question how real the notion of "in the city for the city" really is.Escape from New York: https://arpitrage.substack.com/p/escape-from-new-yorkJoan Didion's essay "Goodbye to All That" can be found in her book Slouching Toward Bethlehem.

Nelly Bly, Katherine Graham, Marvel Cooke, Lorena Hickok, Joan Didion: they wrote stories that sometimes only women could write, elevating women's voices and revealing otherwise unknown details of our society. We are going to (of course) discuss a brief history of women in journalism, and share stories about four of our favorites. Allegra also shares some book recommendations, and we (try to) end on a positive note, analyzing these women's long lasting and beneficial impact on history and writing.  Intrepid and important, these real-life women writers have their stories told in some novels we recommend in this episode. This episode was recorded in Galveston, where we were attending the Texas Distance Learning Association Conference.  Books we recommend: Woman 99, The Address, The Dollhouse, White Houses. and Slouching Toward Bethlehem.  Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook @professhers. Email us at professhers@gmail.com.  Written and presented by Allegra Davis Hanna and Misty Wilson-Mehrtens.

'The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas' and women who shaped the book world

MashReads Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2017 50:55

This week on the MashReads Podcast, we read and discuss Ursula Le Guin's short story "The One's Who Walk Away From Omelas." The story forces readers to imagine the utopia of Omelas, an idylic land filled with festivals, sun and happiness. But as a part of an undisclosed bargain, the joy of Omelas is only possible if one child experiences extreme pain. This child is imprisoned in a cellar or broom closet, covered in sores and can have no happy thing or kind word offered to him. Everyone in Omelas knows of this child -- citizens usually learn of the child when they are between 10-12 years old – and many accept this child’s pain as a fact of life. The ones who do not walk away from Omelas into the great unknown never to return. Though only 4 short pages, the story forces readers to grapple with a complex moral and ethical conundrum: should we accept the pain of one person if it makes the happiness of many possible. Then, inspired by Ursula Le Guin and Women’s History Month, we discuss female authors that shaped the book world, including S.E. Hinton who defined modern YA with The Outsiders, Joan Didion who helped shape creative non-fiction with her books Slouching Toward Bethlehem and The Year of Magical Thinking, M.K. Jemmeson [sp] who is brining more representation to the fantasy genre with The Fifth Element, and Shirley Jackson whose work captured the 1940s and ‘50s anxiety of womanhood.  And as always we close the show with recommendations: Aliza recommends The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. “It is YA but it so amazing and powerful and wonderful and important. It’s amazing. Every single person on the planet should read it.” Peter recommends The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. “It is just so surprising and fun and full of joy yet challenging. As a person who has always loved Legend of Zelda games, the last several have fallen beneath my standard of excellence and this rises above any expectations I could have mustered.” MJ recommends 20th Century Women. “That movie is so good! Number 1 Annette Benning [sp] is flawless in this movie. The movie is so dynamic, it’s so feminist, it’s funny, it is smart, I cannot begin to describe how thought provoking [the movie is].”

"I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind's door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends." That is Joan Didion, from her essay "On Keeping a Notebook,' from her classic collection Slouching Towards Bethlehem. We chose this book because we thought it might shine some light on the plight of the Lakers--things fall apart; the centre cannot hold--but in point of fact all it did was make us think of other Didion lines. "We tell ourselves stories in order to live." "We are here on this island in the middle of the Pacific in lieu of filing for divorce." "Innocence ends when one is stripped of the delusion that one likes oneself." Chock full of some of the greatest essays ever committed to paper, Slouching Toward Bethlehem begs to be read and read again. Our apologies if our discussion of the anemic 2016-2017 Los Angeles Lakers roster pales when placed alongside it. (NB: we discuss the Didion collection until around the 38 minute mark, then dive into our low expectations for the upcoming Lakers season. Also, stay tuned for our emergency pod with the novelist J. Robert Lennon on whether or not sports and literature have anything to say to one another. The answer may surprise you!)

The guys, surprisingly, stayed unwaveringly committed to their choice of "waffle" as the common ingredient for this episode, with all of the tortured puns that entailed. Rob took the cake with a Waffle Jambalaya sandwich, with andouille chicken sausage, diced red pepper and tomato, green onions, baby zucchini, and green onions on wheat waffles (ENTICE: 29). Ryan went a simpler route, with baked beans and a quinoa burger with some maple syrup on blueberry waffles (ENTICE: 27). They then use an essay-ish excerpt from Slouching Toward Bethlehem called "On Keeping a Notebook (try here) as a jumping off point for conversation on what note-taking means, the purposes for which we do it, and how it's gotten easier in the Technology Revolution.
