Tune in to discover how to take that next step and thrive in your "third half!" --- Watch the episode here Listen to the podcast here What's Next? With Caroline Brecker And Polly Chandler How To Rewire Yourself How many of us have reached a point in our lives where our primary careers are coming to a close and we're trying to figure out what to do with the rest of our life? We have two guests, a bit of a switch who made the transition and started another great phase of their lives. Caroline Brecker is the Cofounder of Third Half Advisors. Her background includes many years in finance with Stints at JP Morgan Private Bank where she oversaw $40 billion. Polly Chandler is a strength coach at Third Hald Advisors. Her background as a seasoned coach, curriculum designer and facilitator who played a key role in launching one of the first NBA's sustainability in the country led to her involvement with Third Half Advisors. Welcome to the show. Thank you, Gail. Thank you. Many of us reach this point in our lives where we're in endpoint with our career and so many people I've talked to the years, flounder because you've been successful, enjoyed a career but you want to do something else and don't know what it is and what to do. Tell our readers, if you will Caroline. Where were you in your life when you decided to retire from JP Morgan Private Bank and you need to figure out what's next? Excellent question. I retired from Morgan after decades of being there. The organization had evolved to a much bigger enterprise and was a place that I probably was ready to move on from in terms of my own personal growth. Coincidentally to that, my husband was retiring and a dear friend of mine, Campbell Garish who is the cofounder of Third Half was also stepping back from his firm. While I was doing consulting work, I was watching these two try to navigate the stepping back part and it was amazingly complicated. Need For Transition Support I was surprised at how many fragmented resources or lack of resources there were out there, especially in a trusted environment way. Again, our longevity has changed so dramatically. Over the last century, we've gained 30 years practically in life longevity and to know the people would be floundering around for not just months but potentially years was striking to me and Campbell and my husband. It spoke to a need in the marketplace for some community to help people have a little light structure in thinking through this next chapter. It was a very compelling need and something I found deeply interesting from my own work with individuals and families. Polly, how about you? My transition very much came from an intentional activity of logging what was energizing and what was draining me. I kept track of it for several months while I was still the Chair of the Department of Management at Antioch University. Over time, I saw a pattern, which was what was energizing me most was coaching and mentoring students and faculty and transitions. What was draining me were some of the academic responsibilities and committees and things like th...
Why we must rethink our residency on the planet to understand the connected challenges of tribalism, inequity, climate justice, and democracy. How can we respond to the current planetary ecological emergency? In To Know the World: A New Vision for Environmental Learning (MIT Press, 2020), Mitchell Thomashow proposes that we revitalize, revisit, and reinvigorate how we think about our residency on Earth. First, we must understand that the major challenges of our time--migration, race, inequity, climate justice, and democracy--connect to the biosphere. Traditional environmental education has accomplished much, but it has not been able to stem the inexorable decline of global ecosystems. Thomashow, the former president of a college dedicated to sustainability, describes instead environmental learning, a term signifying that our relationship to the biosphere must be front and center in all aspects of our daily lives. In this illuminating book, he provides rationales, narratives, and approaches for doing just that. Dr. Mitchell Thomashow is a renowned environmental educator with a career that spans decades, and this is his 4th book within this domain… published by MIT press. An overarching theme of ‘sense of place' has permeated this and his other writings, and all have asked people to stop, see and reflect on the changes around them. Mitch has a had varied career in academia, from teaching and advising graduate students, to initiating a cohort-based, low residency model, for a PhD in Environmental Studies. He has chaired an Environmental Studies Department at Antioch University and subsequently was appointed as the President of Unity College. Mitchell's expertise is still in demand in the environmental arena. He has been well received through over a hundred of his plenary addresses, workshops, and sustainability consultations. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about creativity. What's your definition of creativity? And do you see yourself as creative? I struggled with seeing myself this way for many years because I'm not artistic. Expanding my definition of creativity helped me to see that I'm far more creative than I thought. You probably are too! This week, I'm talking with Dr. Amy Climer, a creativity and innovation consultant, about driving greater creativity and innovation among teams. Here she shares the three key elements needed for teams to be creative together: team purpose, strong team dynamics and a team creative process. We also talk about the ways in which our current structures set us up for failure by emphasizing the idea that there's one right way to do things and by focusing on short-term, transactional results rather than long-term innovative solutions. And, lastly, we talk about the ways in which impostor syndrome and fear keep us from being creative and how creative teams can support one another.About My GuestDr. Amy Climer is a thought leader in innovation, team development, and experiential learning. She teaches research-based practices, tools, and techniques to forward-thinking organizations such as the Mayo Clinic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, FOX Sports, and the University of Wisconsin. This week's episode of then & now is part of a series co-sponsored by the L.A. History Collaborative, in which we explore the impact of the catastrophic wildfires that affected Los Angeles in early 2025. We are joined by Amy Green, Principal of Silverlake Conservation and one of Los Angeles' most seasoned historical conservators. She discusses her efforts to preserve intricately crafted tiles from the early 20th century that have been salvaged from homes in Altadena impacted by the fires as well as the importance of these tiles to the historical context of Altadena and Southern California more broadly. In the aftermath of the extensive destruction caused by the Eaton Fire, historic Batchelder tiles—recognized as one of Los Angeles' most significant contributions to the American Arts and Crafts movement—have been discovered, sometimes as the only markers of where homes once stood. To preserve these pieces of history, Amy, along with the volunteer organization Save the Tiles, endeavors to protect this essential aspect of cultural heritage. Salvaging these architectural fragments not only preserves elements of the affected homes but also serves as a connection between what has been lost and the future that lies ahead. Amy calls attention to the fact that, in the midst of profound devastation, there emerges a remarkable display of kindness. Amy Green is a Principal of Silverlake Conservation and has a broad range of experience in the conservation of a variety of materials, including ceramics, glass, metal, stone, concrete, and modern materials. Amy came to the field of conservation as a ceramic artist with a strong working knowledge of clay and glaze chemistry, and she has gravitated towards the treatment of historic tile and architectural terra cotta. Amy has a certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Southern California, a Master's of Art in Tile Conservation from Antioch University, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan.Further ReadingLos Angeles Times, ‘The only thing still left.' The problem is we rarely bring it into our day-to-day work.”“It's about being deliberate. You can't just hope for creativity to happen—you have to follow a clear process and cultivate the right environment.”“If you want your team to be more creative, spend time clarifying the real problem before jumping into ideation. Even five minutes can change everything.”“Creative abrasion is when we can disagree around ideas and still respect each other personally. If you have a child who seems to fight sleep with every ounce of their being . . . you're not alone. While some kids easily drift off, others — especially those who are highly sensitive, alert, and intense — struggle with winding down, leaving parents exhausted and desperate for solutions. In this episode of Chick Chat, I sit down with sleep expert Macall Gordon to discuss why traditional sleep advice often fails these “livewire” children and what parents can do instead. With years of research in infant mental health and temperament-based sleep strategies, Macall shares science-backed insights to help parents navigate bedtime battles with compassion, patience, and a plan that actually works. Who is Macall Gordon? Macall Gordon has a masters degree in applied psychology from Antioch University in Seattle with a research-based specialization in infant mental health, sleep advice, and parenting culture. She also has a bachelor of science in human biology from Stanford University. Macall has conducted and presented her own research on temperament, sleep, and parenting advice at infant and child development conferences around the world and she is a certified Gentle Sleep Coach as well as a featured provider on the women's telehealth platform, Maven Clinic. She is also the author of the new book Why Won't You Sleep?!: A Game-Changing Approach for Exhausted Parents of Nonstop, Super Alert, Big Feeling Kids. Macall comes to this work because she had two sensitive, alert, intense children, and she didn't sleep for 18 years. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, I chat with Macall about sleep strategies for children with alert temperaments. We know that every child is different. However, when it comes to sleep, parents of highly sensitive kids aren't always prepared for what bedtime might bring. That's why we had to get the scoop from Macall. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: Please tell us about your journey with getting your children to sleep. What's a “livewire,” and how do these temperament traits impact sleep and parenting? How does current sleep training information and research fail to consider temperament? What are some necessary workarounds to consider in working on sleep with "livewires"? Tell us about your “big four strategies” for sleep success. How can parents create a step-by-step plan for their child using a time-tested, evidence-based approach that doesn't require leaving children alone to cry? We know that sleep training (or sleep teaching) can be exhausting for parents. Can you recommend any tips for tired parents going through the process? What are some of the perks of having a "livewire" child? Sleep challenges with highly sensitive and intense kids can be beyond frustrating, but understanding how temperament affects sleep is a game-changer. As Macall Gordon explained, these children aren't choosing to resist sleep. Rather, their perceptiveness, persistence, and big emotions make it harder for them to settle. With the right approach, parents can support their child's natural sleep needs without endless battles or forcing a method that doesn't work. We're so grateful that Macall could share her insights with us in this episode! In this episode of The Mind Mate Podcast, I had the absolute privilege of speaking with Emmy Van Deurzen, an iconic figure in existential psychotherapy and philosophy. We delved into the rich terrain of dream analysis and discussed how our unconscious lives can reveal pathways to authenticity. We also explored Emmy's personal journey: her love of Socrates sparked during her youth, the profound impact of growing up in a post-World War II world, and how these experiences shaped her relentless pursuit of life's deepest questions. About Emmy: Emmy van Deurzen is a leading existential psychotherapist, philosopher, and prolific author. Born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1951, she studied French and philosophy in Montpellier, France, before earning a master's degree in phenomenology and existentialism under Michel Henry. Emmy's career began in France, where she worked in innovative psychiatric settings, such as Saint Alban and La Candelie, while training in psychotherapy and clinical psychology. In 1977, Emmy moved to the UK, where she contributed to the Arbours Association and Antioch University before founding the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling in London. When my child was little, one of the most common sleep training methods was the "cry it out" approach. We tried it briefly, and it felt absolutely terrible for all of us. I know many parents can relate to the feelings of desperation and overwhelm that come when a child just isn't sleeping. I wish I'd known back then about sleep coaches Macall Gordon and Kim West, also known as The Sleep Lady, who have developed a gentler, effective approach to changing sleep patterns. Their approach, based on years of research and experience with thousands of families, is especially suited for children who are more alert, intense, and persistent than their peers—and who put up a bigger fight at bedtime. Sound familiar? Then this episode is for you. In their new book, Why Won't You Sleep?! A Gamechanging Approach for Nonstop, Super-Alert, Big-Feeling Kids, Kim and Macall present a fresh take on sleep training, rooted in understanding a child's unique temperament. In our conversation, we cover common sleep struggles, misconceptions about sleep training, and why a gradual approach is empowering for both parents and children. They also share tips on setting limits for early risers and managing transitions that encourage peaceful nights. About Macall Gordon Macall is a researcher, speaker, and author specializing in the link between temperament and sleep. She has a master's degree in Applied Psychology from Antioch University, Seattle with a research-based specialization in infant mental health. She also has a B.S. in Human Biology from Stanford University. She has conducted and presented research on temperament, sleep, and parenting advice at infant and child development conferences around the world. She has been a featured speaker at national sleep conferences and has led webinar-based advanced training for sleep coaches, mental health providers, and others. She is a certified Gentle Sleep Coach in private practice and is a featured provider on the women's telehealth platform, Maven Clinic. She is the co-author (with Kim West) of the upcoming book Why Won't You Sleep?! A Gamechanging Approach for Nonstop, Super Alert, Big-feeling Kids. She comes to this work because she had two sensitive, alert, intense children, and she didn't sleep for eighteen years. About Kim West Kim West, LCSW-C is a mom of two who has been a practicing child and family social worker for over 25 years. She has personally helped over twenty thousand families all over the world gently teach their children how to fall asleep—and fall back asleep without leaving them to cry it out alone. She started training Gentle Sleep Coaches internationally in 2010 and has appeared as a child sleep expert on numerous magazines, newspapers, and television programs including Dr. Phil, TODAY, and Good Morning America. She is the author of five other books. Things you'll learn How gentle sleep coaching can serve as an effective alternative to traditional methods Why understanding a child's temperament is crucial in the success of sleep training How behaviorism in sleep training differs from its limited use in other areas of parenting Why a gradual approach to sleep training empowers both parents and children, and how to do that Why parents of intense children often feel stuck between traditional methods and alternative approaches when it comes to supporting their child's sleep How setting limits helps empower parents while teaching children new sleep-related skills Resources mentioned Macall Gordon's website LIttle Live Wires website Kim West, aka The Sleep Lady, website Why Won't You Sleep?! It's election season in the United States, and it affects us all, no matter how involved we are in politics. Deep fractures run through our families, neighborhoods, and workplaces, affecting our ability to live and work with each other. Phyllis Leavitt's new book, America in Therapy, directly addresses this problem and what we can do about it. She joined me at the Edges of Lean to talk about the intersections of political division and continuous improvement. Phyllis Leavitt Phyllis Leavitt's journey into psychology began long before her formal education. Growing up in a close-knit community, she was always drawn to helping others and understanding the complexities of human emotions. This passion led her to volunteer at local shelters and community centers during her teenage years, where she witnessed firsthand the profound impact of trauma and the power of compassionate support. Phyllis Leavitt graduated from Antioch University in 1989, earning a Master's in Psychology and Counseling. She co-directed Parents United, a sexual abuse treatment program in Santa Fe, New Mexico, until 1991, after which she dedicated herself to private practice full-time. Over the course of 34 years as a psychotherapist, Phyllis worked with children, families, couples, and individual adults, specializing in issues related to abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their consequences, and the essential components of healing. She is the author of two books, "A Light in the Darkness" and "Into the Fire." In this episode, Justine and Sarah are joined by Helena Vissing, PsyD, SEP, PMH-C, a licensed psychologist practicing trauma-informed somatic psychotherapy. They discuss the quote by Rosemary Balsam that highlights the relationship between a woman and embodied events, such as birth, across her entire lifetime. They explore the significance of birth as a prism that captures the past and future, the need for relational care in the prevention and healing from birth trauma, and the limitations of a purely medical approach to birth. Helena emphasizes the importance of holding a lifespan perspective and integrating somatic and psychodynamic approaches in supporting clients. Keywords birth trauma, female body, relational care, healing, lifespan perspective, somatic psychotherapy, psychodynamic approach Takeaways Birth is a transformative event that holds meaning for the individual both before and after it occurs. Relational care is essential in the prevention and healing from birth trauma. Relational care provides support, understanding, and validation that is not available technology alone. A purely medical approach to birth overlooks the importance of the relationship between the birthing person and their body, emotions, and experiences. A lifespan perspective is crucial in understanding the impact of birth trauma and the ongoing journey of healing and transformation. Integrating somatic and psychodynamic approaches can support clients in reconnecting with their bodies and navigating the complexities of the perinatal transition. Sound Bites "Birth is never just that one moment. It captures so much of what has gone before in your whole life." "We cannot bypass the need for relational care that humans have. It's a defining feature of being human." Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction 01:43 Quote by Rosemary Balsam 08:28 The Importance of Relational Care in Birth 17:51 Challenging the Medical Approach to Birth 28:22 The Dilemma of Western Medicine 38:06 Healing and Reconnecting with the Body 50:17 The Prism of Healing and Transformation On the Resilient Birth podcast, Justine and Sarah explore the impact of trauma across the perinatal period, from trying-to-conceive to pregnancy, from childbirth to postpartum and parenting. Through an inspirational quote that drives our weekly conversations about trauma and healing, Justine and Sarah explore topics such as birth trauma, parenting as a survivor, and finding healing with vulnerability and compassion that support birthing people and birth professionals. Each week, listeners leave with takeaways to utilize in their lives and/or clients. Justine and Sarah hold the stories they share with honor and respect with the hope to impart knowledge, increase understanding, and bear witness to this challenging topic. Sarah is a licensed mental health counselor, educator, and mom of three. She walks with a story of trauma from before and as a result of her perinatal experience. Justine supports survivors of trauma through perinatal coaching and childbirth education. As well as being a mother of three, she holds a Ph.D. on representations of consent and sexual violence. Happy Day, Friend! In this podcast episode I'm chatting with Kailyn Fullerton about mindfulness-based social emotional learning in international schools. Kailyn is a passionate and engaged educator who firmly believes in the transformative power of mindfulness and social-emotional learning (SEL). For years, she has integrated these practices into her own classroom in order to support students on their personal journeys.Recently, it has become evident that supporting students needs to also include ensuring that the adults in their sphere also feel safe and emotionally competent. Thus, Upstream Collaborative was born to welcome exploration of these skills for children, families, teachers and schools.A certified teacher, Kailyn received her Master's in Education specializing in Mindfulness for Educators from Antioch University. She also has a certificate in Positive Education from Laurier University. Currently, she is back at Antioch as a doctoral student, specializing in SEL. She is also en route to becoming a certified mindfulness teacher under the mentorship of Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach in the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program.I hope you find this episode valuable! Song: Deeper Music by: Meg O'Dell Chittenden Notes: I was stymied when I came to the point in the podcast where I explain why I chose this song... because to me it simply is exactly the way I'm trying to live. It's like Meg O'Dell Chittenden went in my brain and named what was happening! Do you find songs like that -- ones that simply speak your truth so clearly that singing them feels like naming your very own core? It reassures me that I am not alone... Songwriter Info: Meg loves helping people access their innate capacity for healing, connection, and joy. She is a somatic coach, supporting individuals and couples in growth, transformation, and healing. Because she's always found the voice, and especially singing in harmony with others, to be a particularly powerful pathway for connection with ourselves and the world around us, she delights in serving as a music teacher, song leader, and vocal mentor. She hosts an annual adult and family singing retreat on the coast of Maine called SongWeavers. In addition, Meg is an Adjunct Professor for Antioch University's Graduate Program for Waldorf Teachers and for the Center for Anthroposophy's Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program. Her sources of inspiration include the small, misty mountain that overlooks her home and singing with her children, Clancy and Celia. Sharing Info: The song is free to share but Meg always welcomes financial and/or networking support if/when folks are so moved. Talking points: trauma This was an honor. The word trauma gets thrown around a lot these days, so it's important to get back to basics and really sink into what's going on and why. After all, this is humanity we're talking about, and we're nothing if not complex. Peter is a legend in therapy circles for his groundbreaking work in somatic education and trauma work, so we dug into many of the different (and unusual) things something like trauma brings to the table. Both Peter and I encourage you to listen WITH someone! (00:00:00) - Peter's definition of trauma and how it affects the body (00:07:27) - Peter demonstrates a somatic exercise to help release trauma (00:13:14) - Do men and women experience and handle trauma differently? (00:21:40) - On how trauma needs witnessing to heal, and Peter's experience with active imagination (00:34:14) - Navigating the almost mystical side of healing (00:39:45) - Why the tiger? (00:43:27) - How can men work in a healthy way with anger, and how betrayal can impact how someone expresses themselves (00:49:08) - The main tool to help process trauma Peter A Levine, Ph.D., is the developer of Somatic Experiencing®, a naturalistic and neurobiological approach to healing trauma, which he has developed over the past 50 years. He holds a doctorate in Biophysics from UC Berkeley and a doctorate in Psychology from International University. He is the Founder and President of the Ergos Institute for Somatic Education, dedicated to Community Outreach and Post-Advanced Somatic Experiencing® Training, and the Founder and Advisor for Somatic Experiencing International. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley; Mills College; Antioch University; the California Institute of Integral Studies; and the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. His work has been taught to over 30,000 therapists in over 42 countries. Dr. Levine is the author of several best-selling books on trauma, including Waking the Tiger, Healing Trauma (published in over 29 languages); In an Unspoken Voice, How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness; and Trauma and Memory, Brain and Body in a Search for the Living Past.
