Power Station
We see the lives of LGBTQ individuals and youth at risk

In 1984, at the height of the AIDS crisis, the LGBTQ community was pushing back hard against prejudice, transphobia and the failure of the public health system to meet dire medical needs. When queer youth, some of whom identified as trans, were hospitalized at the then-notorious St. Eliabeth's hospital in Washington DC, a group of community members and health professionals founded SMYAL, a nonprofit that provides housing, mental health support and safe spaces for LGBTQ youth. As SMYAL's executive director Erin Whalen explains on this episode of Power Station, our president wants to return to that punishing era . Erin are her team are not collapsing in the face of federal funding cuts, the targeting of LGBTQ youth, particularly those who are undocumented, and the rising incidents of hate they are navigating. They are taking steps to care for each other and to support the little SMYALs, the 6-12 years old children and their parents, some of whom are now losing access to vital gender affirming care. As Erin shares, they will use their power and voices to be bold and brave. We all have an amazing opportunity to do the same.

"What's fascinating about the Washington Grays is that they were one of the best teams in baseball but so many people don't know about them. They were a phenomonal team - they won 9 consecutive pennants, 3 Negro League World Series, 11 of their players are in the Hall of Fame, most notablly the powerhouse hitter Josh Gibson." Let's talk about baseball! Our team, the Washington Nationals, are World Champs and we're going to count 2020 as their year as well because ... does this year really count? But the 2019 World Series for all its talk about bringing the World Series back to DC for the first time since 1933 ... was wrong. Becca, Canden and Rebecca talk about the last DC team to win a World Series, the Washington Homestead Grays of the Negro League.   You've been listening to: Canden, who grew up supporting the Durham Bulls.Rebecca, who is still cheering on the Red Sox.And Becca, who has a soft spot for the Houston Astros (scandals aside) Dan King edited and mixed the podcast in Cleveland OH, home of his AL team.  Normally he lives just two blocks away from Nat's Park, home of the Nationals from the times when they were terrible to being the WORLD CHAMPIONS they are today.  GO NATS! For this week's episode, we'd like to highlight the work of SMYAL, Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders, an organization dedicated to supporting, uplifting, and empowering LGTBQ youth throughout the Washington, DC area.  Learn how you can volunteer or donate by visiting them at SMYAL.org.

Sheila Alexander-Reid Shares Herstory of “Women in the Life” and Talks about Black Lesbian Herstory Preservation

In August 2019, we interviewed Sheila Alexander-Reid at her home in Washington, D.C. Reid is the Director, Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs, and Founding Member, Women in the Life Association. She talks about the origins of Women in the Life, her work in the Mayor's Office, and the preservation of black lesbian herstory.   Sheila Alexander-Reid has been a vital part of the LGBT community for well over 20 years. She started as a party promoter back in the late 80's/early 90's with two other friends and called themselves VTR. In 1993, Sheila ventured out on her own and starting throwing Black lesbian parties under the Women in the Life brand. Filling up local party venues such as Tracks and Hung Jury to capacity, the popularity of her parties quickly gained momentum in the community. A stickler for quality and details, Sheila developed a strong following that's still present to this day.   Moved by the death of her close friend and LGBT activist, Wanda Alston in 2002, she started a nonprofit organization, the Women in the Life Association.  Sheila now wanted to use the same resources and drive she used to pack parties to address social justice issues for Lesbians in DC. She did this with cultural programs such as the popular Open Mic series, empowering movies screenings, and the Wanda's Will Project, which helped raise awareness about the importance of having a written will, specifically, if you're in a long-term relationship.   Sheila started as an advocate for the DC lesbian of color community, but grew to be a voice for the entire LGBTQ community while serving on the board of organizations such as SMYAL, and the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, a political LGBT organization instrumental in securing Gay Marriage for the District. Sheila's charisma and outspoken nature enables her to “reach across the aisle” so to speak when it comes to race related issues in what many consider a racially segregated LGBT community here in DC.   Sheila has always worked hard to bring both visibility and awareness to the issues facing the LGBTQ community including transphobia, the stigma of HIV/AIDS, the isolation of older LGBTQ adults, and the impact of youth homelessness.  From her printed magazine in the 1990's, to her position as producer/ host of WPFW's Inside Out, the only LGBTQ FM radio show in DC, to her current position as Director of the Mayor's Office on LGBTQ Affairs, she's become a prominent and vocal change agent for our community.   In a 2008 Washington Post article, Sheila was asked what she'd want written on her grave stone. Her response was simply, "She tried to make a difference. “   Years later, it is clear that she has indeed made a permanent and positive difference in improving the lives of the often marginalized LGBT community here in the District.     Women in the Life Association website http://womeninthelife.org/   Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/womeninthelife/   Black Lesbian Resistance and Resilience by Sheila Alexander-Reid, was originally published in the online publication, The Feminist Wire, on February 18, 2019. https://thefeministwire.com/2019/02/black-lesbian-resistance-and-resilience/   D.C. Stories of attacks on the way home from the bus stop, bullying in the classroom, and assaults in school hallways are all-too-frequent reminders that our community and many others throughout the US are still not safe places for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people. Perhaps what is most heartbreaking is that some youth have come to believe that this is normal, that this is just part of growing up, or that this is how life is for LGBTQ individuals. SMYAL is working to change all that by providing an inclusive environment and empowering DC-area LGBTQ youth to be leaders and advocates for themselves and their peers in the broader community. We provide youth with the opportunities, support, and skills they need to de-escalate conflicts as they occur and to work within their community to root out these conflicts from their source. Andrew Barnett served as the Executive Director of SMYAL from 2009 to 2014, the only community-based organization solely dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the metro Washington, DC area. Mr. Barnett joined the SMYAL staff in 2005 and as named Executive Director in February 2009. Native to the Washington, DC metro area, Barnett began his involvement in LGBT youth ad ocacy by co-founding a Gay-Straight Alliance as a senior in high school and continued his involvement in LGBT student organizing while obtaining his B.A. at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. In 2010, Barnett received the Metro Weekly Next Generation Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of LGBT activists, artists, and leaders under 30.

Tonight's special guest is Tree Turtle from Baltimore, Maryland, a survivor of multiple forms of child abuse (in and out of foster care) who's now an activist. Tree says, "I survived physical and sexual assaults as well as child ography and am a longtime facilitator and mediator for child and youth welfare. As a Buddhist educator, my aim is to guide others to use loving-kindness and peace-building to conquer societal ills." Beginning in the mid 80s, Tree has offered educational workshops as an anti-violence facilitator, anti-bias mediator, and sexuality educator for such organizations as Public Allies, the Urban League, SMYAL, OUTPost, and scores of schools, shelters, and foster facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Midwest for over twenty-five years. From the 1980s until today, Tree transitioned from being a survivor to becoming a preventer: an American citizen who works to bring awareness to the enormous harm that violence, inequities, and ignorance breeds amongst humans and other species. Tree believes that speaking out against violence as a survivor and a preventer is not enough: we must also give others tools, practices, concepts, policies and procedures to supplant hateful, violent, inequitable acts with peer-to-peer and institutional love. She writes, "Peer-to-peer love models care in our everyday relationships. Institutional love models care in our governmental, educational, and professional communities. Thus, preventing abuse flourishes when we learn how to treat others well regardless of differences; when we learn how to transform conflicts into caring, mutually beneficial opportunities; and when we learn how to change institutional policies, procedures, and practices to ensure equity while caring for and protecting others from harm.
