In this heartfelt and inspiring conversation, we reconnect with Julie Stonefelt of Wild Homestead Living—park ranger, nature mentor, cancer survivor, and long-time member of the deep nature connection community. Julie shares her powerful personal story of transformation, from teenage struggles and early mentorship with Jon to her path through illness, healing, and the creation of a slow, connected life on a rural homestead. We explore the roots of Wild Homestead Living, a vision born not just of longing for simplicity, but of intentional reciprocity with the land and the more-than-human world. Julie offers intimate reflections on how nature supported her through life-altering challenges and how she now supports others in their own reconnection journeys—whether through sit spot practice, gardening alongside local wildlife, or simply noticing the breeze on your skin.We also talk about ego, control, and decolonizing our approach to land and learning. Julie shares how observation, curiosity, and story are at the heart of her teaching—and how small acts, like growing sprouts in a jar, can spark a deeper relationship with life itself. If you've ever wondered how to begin (or begin again) in relationship with nature—especially in our fast-paced world—this episode is your invitation to slow down, listen, and remember."Slowing down and having those connections—it's simple, but it's not easy."About Wild Homestead LivingIf you're craving a life that's more connected to nature, rooted in simplicity, and aligned with your values, you're in the right place.Founded by Julie Stonefelt and Kevin Mack, Wild Homestead Living offers practical tools, heartfelt inspiration, and a supportive community to help you create a sustainable lifestyle—whether you live in the city, the suburbs, or off the grid. That love led her to The Evergreen State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree specializing in environmental education, cultural history, and wildlife rehabilitation. For over 28 years, she's been helping people connect with the wild world around them, whether through her work as a Park Ranger or here at Wild Homestead Living. She believes that nature isn't just something out there—it's part of who we are. And no matter where you live, there's always a way to bring a little more of it into your life.--Tracking Connections Podcast is a production of Connection 1st, an organization that helps you deepen your connection with nature, other people and yourself. Today, instead of your usual Low Profile programming, I'm sharing an interview I conducted with Pat Maley in 2023 for the Olympia Music History Project.  The whole transcript is available at olympiamusichistory.org . Pat and I are discussing the history of Yo Yo Recordings, a studio and record label that he ran from the 1980s to 2006, recording hundreds of touring and local artists.  Inspired by the International Pop Underground Convention in 1991, Pat Maley, Michelle Noel, Kento Oiwa, Pat Castaldo and Ed Varga started YoYo A Go Go, an independent music festival that ran for 5 or 6 days in a row.  There were four YoYo A Go Go festivals between 1994 and 2001, and all the people I just mentioned will be getting together for a panel discussion to reminisce, reflect and celebrate these events through collective storytelling and slides. This event is called “That Summer Feeling: Thirty Years of YoYo A Go Go” and it's happening next Friday, April 18th 2025 at 4pm at The Evergreen State College, in the COM 1 Recital Hall. No tickets or reservations are needed, this event will be open to the public. Here's my conversation with Pat. Illustration by Jack Habegger

[Ep 24-514] Welcome to the New Year of Old. 2025 is here, and Leftists face a new era of reality checks under Trump's second term. From navigating the collapse of pronoun policing to rediscovering patriotism, it's time to adjust. Inflation isn't imaginary, cancel culture is out, and echo chambers only deepen the misery. Heroes aren't born—they persevere, confronting challenges head-on. As crime surges in progressive cities and old policies unravel, self-reliance and humor are essential. Leftists, embrace the irony of voting for Biden and Harris—then laugh. Growth comes from letting go of illusions. Rediscover community, individuality, and resilience. Therapy is costly; these truths are free.[SEGMENT 2-1] Welcome to the New Year of Old 1   [X] SB – Nyer pleads for Hochul to resign   Swedish politician who fought for open borders was beheaded in Congo. The RIGHT magnesium is important. And as we age, this little element becomes much more important. For sleep, stress, our immune systems, healthy heart, and much more….   Let's level-set about the new year. Nothing will change about the Left. The only thing that will happen is what we can change. How we adjust to them. For the past few decades, we've allowed them to change our environment. We have 4 years to undo their damage. We slowed it down from 2016 to 2020. But clearly we didn't stop it. They used their last 4 years of lies and deception to do more damage to America and the world than has been done in a decade. Thankfully, we never stopped. Perseverance. The secret of all triumphs. It distinguishes the strong from the weak. Perseverance makes difficulties and obstacles vanish. It can even overcome Nature. Hollywood created the fiction that people start off as heroes. Nobody starts as a hero. A hero doesn't even know he or she will ever be a hero. They simply strive for more. They ready themselves, and when the moment arrives, they act. Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other. Look at all we defeated, albeit temporary. It's a long list, and not of small things. Leftism tops the list. The idea of Leftists wanting to swap out an old, demented clown for a young black female clown. As if we wouldn't notice that is was just a clown-for-clown swap. We defeated Fauci the fraud. Fauci lost his SS security details. $15M per month was the cost to taxpayers. There were 6 US Marshalls in SUVs parked outside his home at any given time. He will now have to use some of that Pfizer money to protect himself. I suggest he do two things: wear a mask and quarantine.    [SEGMENT 2-3] Welcome to the New Year of Old 3 - Our limits to protect 13 mass shooters were on the FBI watch list. NONE of them were stopped. Here are just a few things that happened over Christmas… [X] SB – Christmas robbery attempt You can bet that Leftists will spin this as teenagers shot in Houston while shopping. The thing about a gun is you'd better be prepared to use it, because Texans trained in hand gun use know that you only pull it when you're going to use it. Three Black teen boys found this out the hard way. Consider that these 3 had the drop on a guy they planned to rob, and they all got shot. The proposed victim was either ex-police, ex-military, or Jason Bourne.   [X] SB – Shooting at the Phoenix airport The good news about this shootout is that it was family. https://dailycaller.com/2024/12/26/report-family-dispute-arizona-police-phoenix-sky-harbor-airport-stabbing-shooting/ “I believe this was a family dispute that escalated,” Reeson said, adding that the police have reason to believe that all five people involved in the violent quarrel knew each other. All four victims were hospitalized and one is in critical condition, police said. Because nothing says I love you like a stabbing or a shooting. But there was more bad news for the criminal element, as felony theft charges soared by 154% in Chicago after the departure of Soros DA Kim Fox. Threshold went from $1000 to $300. Where will criminals do their Christmas “shopping”, if they can't loot from regular stores.   What are you willing to do for your family? This story prompted me to ask this question of my audience. Because I know that the majority of people don't know their limits. This is John Eisenman. He lost his daughter to sexual trafficking. She was sold for $1,000 in Seattle Washington. He did what a father should do and researched, investigated and found out about her abduction. He RESCUED her HIMSELF. He found out the person who sold her into trafficking was her 19 year old boyfriend. He met up with him, abductd him, bludgeond and stabbed him to death in Nov, 2020. The authorities found him [dead AF boyfriend] in Oct 2021 in the trunk of the car he abandoned. John Eisenman sits in jail knowing his daughter is safe and growing up after he has already lived 60 years of his life, always Do your absolute best to make sure your children are safe. Do you think He deserves a medal I watch this show called Alone. People are literally alone in the wilderness and try to survive as long as possible to win $500K. There are no vegans on alone. There is no one not willing to kill a bear to survive. Show me a pacifist and I will show you a person who hasn't been put in a situation to kill another person. There is no such thing. There are people who act or react too slow and get killed. But put in a situation where you can kill the person who is going to kill you, I don't know anybody who won't kill the other person. Does that make us bad humans? No. It makes us humans.    [SEGMENT 2-4] Welcome to the New Year of Old 4 - Trump Second Term Survival Tips for Leftists     Leftist Life Hacks for 2025 It's 2025, and America continues to remind the world why it's still the land of the free and the home of MAGA Christmas sweaters. For Leftists, however, this year might feel like a prolonged stress test. Between clashing with reality and attempting to police everyone's pronouns, the struggle is real. So, in the spirit of goodwill, I'm offering a few “helpful” tips to help you survive the next four years of Trump's second term with your mental health sort of intact.Tip 1: Trump Won, Again. Deal With That Too. Your MAGA relatives will definitely be discussing Trump's latest massive victory—all year long. And let's face it: you deserve it. You tried calling an audible, but your quarterback fumbled the ball before halftime. Penalty. Dump the “felon” talk and stop holding out hope that maybe ONE of those charges will stick. None will, so just stop. Example: Remember when Leftist hopes were pinned on Trump's tax returns exposing a massive scandal? Yeah, that aged about as well as a glass of milk left out overnight.Tip 2: Pronoun Anxiety Is Self-Inflicted. Your pronouns are back to the gender of your birth. No more “ze,” “zir,” or whatever Scrabble hand you were playing with. Within 90 days of Trump's inauguration, you'll be the only one using your pronouns—and not even you really believe them anymore. Look at what happened to the college professor who lost his job for refusing to use neo-pronouns. Ultimately, he got his job back, and the school quietly dropped the case. That should tell you where the wind is blowing.Tip 3: Life Is Not Montessori. Here's a shocker: We don't all have to get along. In the words of John McClane from Die Hard, “Welcome to the party, pal!” Life is messy, people disagree, and sometimes the turkey is dry. Evergreen State College's attempt to create a utopia of mutual respect failed spectacularly.  The college tried mandating “safe spaces” for every opinion. Turns out, the logistics of separating people based on micro-aggressions looked like a spaghetti map. In the end, students turned on each other.   Tip 4: Inflation Is Real, and It's Your Fault. Good news! You'll rediscover capitalism this year. You'll also discover how “free” student loans weren't actually free, and why those who were to foot your bill cut the head off the snake: Joe Biden. Remember when Biden's student loan forgiveness plan got overturned? Yeah, that wasn't Monopoly money they were playing with.  Tip 5: Grow a Spine. New year, new you—right? Well, it's time to grow a spine. Your feelings aren't everyone else's problem. Nobody's coming to bubble-wrap your feelings. If someone triggers you by existing, that's a “you “problem. Think of all the companies that went broke trying to apologize for imaginary sins (cough Bud Light cough). Did it work? Nope. Did it cost billions? Oh yeah.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

Louisa was raised to view God as nothing more than a human concept and spiritualism as a form of superstition. Then, in 1982 at a Manhattan nightclub, she suffered a cardiac arrest brought on by lidocaine poisoning, shot out of her body, and experienced an other-worldly journey to her god source - the Sun.Returned to her body, she dismissed her experience as a hypoxic hallucination. She'd never heard of a Near-Death Experience, and even if she had, she'd have considered the idea of crossing over to be ludicrous. But WEIRD THINGS began happening for her, inexplicable events that wouldn't stop! She tried to shut her mind against seeing a ghost, knowing the future, and reading people's sometimes embarrassing thoughts, until she came to understand that leaving her body had damaged whatever filter blocked out spirit energies. As a spirit voice continued to coach her in how to live wisely, Louisa accepted two facts: 1) the spirit realm is real and 2) visiting it had gifted her with new perceptions. As a full-fledged woo-woo, Louisa found community among fellow Near-Death experiencers and became willing to share her story.International Book Awards Finalist 2024 - SpiritualityBioLouisa Peck has taught literature and writing at the University of Washington, Evergreen State College, and several Puget Sound area community colleges. As we enter the final month before the November 2024 presidential election, Sam recaps recent developments including Jack Smith's recent court filing detailing the 2020 Trump coup attempt, the fascist disinformation campaign that is actively harming people in need of help and accurate information in the wake of Hurricane Helene while somehow blaming Democrats and more than anything, immigrants, for this climate-fueled destruction, and of course the "eyeliner on a pig" fascism on display during the Walz/Vance debate. These recent developments set the stage for another heavy conversation about the parallels between Trump's rhetoric and the broader fascist movements plans for mass deportation and "one really violent hour" to Kristallnacht, the Nazi-led pogrom that marked a key turning point in the Holocaust. To discuss this she speaks with Zoltán Grossman, author of Lessons of Kristallnacht, “Civil War,” and Mass Deportation. Soundscape Alchemy.Friends, what an episode I have for you today! Months ago, I took an impromptu trip to Canaveral National Seashore to visit acoustic artists Perri Lynch Howard and Gordon Hempton.Frequent collaborators on the podcast, I was ecstatic to spend a weekend practicing the art of listening with them both. We walked mangroves, explored shorelines, and discussed the interplay of human voice, aerospace traffic, and birdsong. The creative collaboration of Gordon and Perri resulted in a stunning piece of environmental art titled, “Hear Me Out.” Join me today for a discussion of what it means to listen with honesty, to weave ourselves into the natural world we inhabit, and to move “in close proximity to lifelong love.”In this episode, Perri and Gordon delve into their experiences during their artist residency at Canaveral National Seashore through the Soundscape Field Station Artist Residency Program. The conversation highlights their collaborative project 'Hear Me Out', which investigates the changing soundscapes and their artistic interpretations influenced by the environment. They share their journey of recording, the emotional challenges faced, and how Doris Leeper's legacy inspired their work. The discussion also touches on the significance of natural sound preservation and future projects related to soundscapes and environmental art.At the end, pop in your headphones, close your eyes, and listen to “Hear Me Out.”Gordon HemptonAcoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton has circled the globe three times in pursuit of the Earth's rarest sounds. His sound portraits which record quickly vanishing natural soundscapes have been featured in People magazine and a national PBS television documentary, Vanishing Dawn Chorus, which earned him an Emmy. It's a dog days of summer special! This week, we are releasing a live interview from last April, that's more timely today than when it was first recorded. Dictators and their sychophants; democracy imperiled by foreign policy misadventures. Sound familiar? For almost a century, American intellectuals of different political stripes have been in thrall to dictators. They've either projected utopian ideals on to them, or been seduced by their charisma and alleged effectiveness. The story of left wing intellectuals falling for figures like Stalin or Castro has already been told. In a new book, America Last: The Right's Century-Long Romance with Foreign Dictators, Jacob Heilbrunn, author and editor of the National Interest, tells the story of the American political right and its dalliances with overseas despots. Joining Damir as co-host is friend of the pod Professor Jennifer Murtazashvili, head of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Governance and Markets, which graciously supports our work.As usual, Damir veers the discussion towards first principles. Are people more likely to be seduced by dictatorships when liberalism is perceived to be failing? Is liberalism perceived to be failing more often during wartime or peacetime? Just what is attractive about despotism? Should liberals accept that a certain amount of “ineffectiveness” is part and parcel of the liberal order? Tune in for a riveting discussion of these questions and more.Required Reading:* “Apologists without Remorse,” by Jacob Heilbrunn (American Prospect).* America Last: The Right's Century-Long Romance with Foreign Dictators by Jacob Heilbrunn.* “Trump's anti-Ukraine view dates to the 1930s. America rejected it then. Will we now?” by Robert Kagan.* U.S. Military Interventions since 1890 (Evergreen State College). This post is part of our collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Governance and Markets.Wisdom of Crowds is a platform challenging premises and understanding first principles on politics and culture. Blurb: Matt and I talk about the legacy of The Simpsons, what it means to go from super fan to icon, always knowing he wanted to draw cartoons, having kid are better than making great art, how music makes The Simpsons great, how Jay could come back to work if he came back crawling on his knees, and how Jay agreed to crawl. Bio:  Matt Groening was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 15, the third of five children.  His father, Homer, was a cartoonist and filmmaker.  From an early age, Matt created his own cartoons, amusing his friends and annoying his teachers.  Groening attended Evergreen State College in Washington State, where he studied philosophy and continued his interest in cartoons, comics and music.   After his graduation in 1977, Groening headed to Los Angeles where he struggled in immobilizing but irksome poverty.  Increasingly frustrated by the traffic, smog, and his landlords, Matt began to vent his angst to his friends by sending them cartoons starring a bug-eyed rabbit named Binky.  Groening soon began to publish and sell these cartoons at the record shop where he worked.  Their popularity encouraged Matt to syndicate, and in April 1980, Life In Hell® formally debuted in the Los Angeles Reader and ran successfully in more than 250 newspapers around the world and half-dozen languages before Groening concluded it's production in 2012.  Life in Hell® has also been collected in a best-selling series of books with over two million copies in print, including Love is Hell, Work is Hell, School is Hell, Childhood is Hell, Akbar & Jeff's Guide to Life, Greetings From Hell, The Big Book of Hell, With Love From Hell, How to Go to Hell, The Road to Hell, Binky's Guide to Love, and Love is Still Hell.  In 1987 James L. Brooks approached Matt about creating animated shorts to fit between sketches of “The Tracey Ullman Show.”  Matt agreed, but instead of using the Life in Hell® characters, he created an entirely new cast: The Simpsons, which bear the names of his family members, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie (Bart is an anagram for brat). The Simpsons were soon spun off into a half-hour animated series which first aired on December 17, 1989 with a Christmas special, followed by the series premiere on January 14, 1990.  It has since gone on to become the longest running prime-time animated show in television history.  An international hit, the series has also spawned a licensing and merchandising empire.  It has spanned a hit feature film and a revolutionary virtual coaster ride at Universal Studios.  He also created the Emmy Award-winning animated series “Futurama.” As a cartoonist, Groening began his “Life in Hell” weekly comic strip series in the 1980s, and concluded it in 2012. In 1993, he formed Bongo Comics Group, and continues to serve as publisher.  Winner of multiple Emmy Awards, the prestigious Peabody Award, Annie Awards and the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the highest honor presented by the National Cartoonist Society, he also received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2012 and was personally honored with designing five U.S. postage stamps.

Greetings In this week's episode, our away mission takes us underground to explore mushrooms, the most widely distributed organisms on our planet. Without them, life on Earth might not have occurred. Terence McKenna even suggested that mushrooms might have originated in space due to their spores' resilience. If you listened to our 2022 episode, "The Psychedelic Therapist Will See You Now," you know I'm interested in psychedelics' impact on mental health. Beyond this, mushrooms can slow cancer growth, improve cognitive functions, enhance forest health, and act as an exit drug for fentanyl addiction. Our guest today, Michael Beug, a mycologist and former professor at Evergreen State College, will enlighten us on these magical organisms.Michael, active in the North American Mycological Association and the Pacific Northwest Key Council, has studied psilocybin since the 70s. We explore fungi's role in ecosystems, their health benefits, and innovative uses, from sustainable materials to dietary enhancements. Also, restoring our faith in humanity this week is Taryn Foster, a coral scientist and CEO of Coral Maker. Witnessing mass bleaching while researching climate change for her doctoral thesis, she partnered with Autodesk to use AI and automation to create coral skeletons for nursery-grown corals. Coral reefs, vital to 25% of marine species and benefiting a billion people, face catastrophic losses by the 2030s if global temperatures continue to rise. Taryn's work aims to combat this threat.Join us as we explore the incredible world of mushrooms and their potential to transform our health and our planet. Don't forget to check out the full interview on our Patreon page!Key Topics: The Role of Fungi in Ecosystems: Exploring how fungi contribute to the health and sustainability of various ecosystems, including their symbiotic relationships with plants and trees.Health Benefits of Mushrooms: Discussing the various health benefits of mushrooms, including their antiviral, anti-cancer, and cognitive-enhancing properties.Innovative Uses of Mushrooms: Highlighting the innovative and sustainable uses of mushrooms, such as in packaging, insulation, and as alternatives to conventional materials. What does it mean to be a proudly queer Indigenous woman in the United States today? Sasha LaPointe, winner of the 2023 Pacific Northwest Book Award for her memoir, Red Paint, shares a new collection of essays that navigate the complexities of indigenous identity, challenge stereotypes, and address cultural displacement and environmental concerns. Thunder Song draws inspiration from her family's rich archive and the work of her late great-grandmother and weaves together stories that demonstrate the profound intersections of community, commitment, and conscientious honesty. Described as “unapologetically punk,” the essays in Thunder Song segue from the miraculous to the mundane, from the spiritual to the physical, as they examine the role of art — in particular, music — and community in helping a new generation of indigenous people claim the strength of their heritage while defining their own path in the contemporary world. Celebrate cultural diversity as LaPointe explores how we shape our understanding of the world, hoping to inspire a new era of conscientious living. Sasha taqʷšəblu LaPointe is a Coast Salish author from the Nooksack and Upper Skagit Indian tribes. She is the author of Red Paint: The Ancestral Autobiography of a Coast Salish Punk, winner of a Pacific Northwest Book Award, the Washington State Book Award for Creative Nonfiction/Memoir, and an NPR Best Book of the Year, and the poetry collection Rose Quartz. We look at several recent examples of students demanding curriculum changes to amplify racial grievances and erase whiteness. We look closely at events on The Evergreen State College, where students took over the campus and turned it into an asylum run by the inmates. In this episode, we delve into the world of plant medicines. Our guest, Natalie Hammerquist, a herbalist based in Washington state, shares her extensive knowledge and experience in herbalism and foraging local wild plants. Natalie's journey, rooted in a degree from The Evergreen State College, led her to explore herbalism, plant taxonomy, and food science. Under the guidance of renowned herbalists like Cascade Anderson Geller and Matthew Wood, Natalie integrated aspects of Chinese medicine and Western herbalism into her practice. What's particularly intriguing about our conversation is Natalie's emphasis on the importance of collaboration between restorationists and herbalists to ensure sustainable caretaking and the preservation of plant resources. Natalie also shares her personal journey into herbalism, shaped by her own health struggles during college, and highlights the diverse approaches within herbalism, blending scientific methodologies with traditional wisdom. Additionally, Natalie sheds light on the regulatory disparities between the United States and Europe, emphasizing the need for advocacy and education to support herbalism and holistic health practices. She offers insights into her forthcoming book, "Medicinal Plants of the Pacific Northwest," which aims to provide practical guidance and visual aids for identifying medicinal plants, emphasizing the importance of accurate plant identification and ethical harvesting practices. We dig into topics such as the significance of timing in harvesting, ethical considerations inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer's concept of the Honorable Harvest, and the therapeutic properties of plants like knotweed, blackberry, and hawthorn. Natalie advocates for sustainable harvesting practices that balance the benefits and impacts of these plants, promoting a mindful approach that honors the interconnectedness of all living beings and fosters responsibility for the wider environment. Bret Weinstein, host of DarkHorse Podcast, recently visited the US border and was horrified by the conditions – and how easily “male, military age” Middle Eastern and Chinese migrants are entering the USA disguised as refugees. Weinstein says the crisis is only made worse by NGOs that spread false information to desperate refugees who fall prey to exploitative guides that fail to prepare them for the dangerous trek through places like Dorian Gap. “…their desire to induce people to migrate is causing people who are woefully unprepared for the Darien Gap to try to make that journey,” says Bret in a recent interview with Tucker Carlson. “The humanitarian tragedy is immense.” Bret Weinstein is Host of the DarkHorse Podcast, the co-author of ‘The Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century', and a former professor at The Evergreen State College.
