Text us and say hello! In episode 30 of "Backwards Compatible," my good buddy Odian Levy fills in for Lou to discuss a classic from our childhood, "Maximum Carnage" on both the Genesis and SNES. Odian, a dedicated Spider-Man fan (make sure you check out one of our older episodes where he and I discuss the Tobey Maguire Trilogy: https://generations.buzzsprout.com/2024899/episodes/14282630-tobey-maguire-s-spider-man-part1-with-great-power), was eager to dive into the deep cuts of the "Maximum Carnage" storyline, exploring how the game translated the intense narrative and character dynamics of the comics into a thrilling beat 'em up experience.During our discussion, we highlight a particular aspect that both fascinated and frustrated gamers: the game's notorious difficulty. "Maximum Carnage" is known for its punishing challenges, and despite numerous attempts, neither Odian nor I have ever managed to beat the game. This difficulty level adds a layer of infamous prestige to our memories and experiences with the game.We also discuss how both the Genesis and SNES versions provided a nearly identical gameplay experience—a rarity for titles released across these two platforms at the time. This consistency allowed players on both systems to equally enjoy the rich, comic book-inspired graphics and the dynamic, action-packed gameplay. As we wrap up the episode, Odian shares insights into the game's adherence to the comic series and takes a playful guess at who the WWF Champion was in September 1994, when "Maximum Carnage" was released. Join us for this special episode as we revisit one of the most challenging and iconic Spider-Man games of the 90s.Support the showWe've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)

After an unexpected December break, we're back with a Patron requested episode on The Pagemaster - a platformer based on the Macaulay Culkin movie of the same name. Is this a case where a licensed game holds up regardless of your thoughts on the movie? We played it with little to no knowledge of the film, and shared our thoughts! We also reached back into our mailbag to discuss what would make the best "worst game ever", ragequits, and gas station hot dogs. Want to jump right into the game? Flip on over to the 12:00 mark! Nintendo Switch Online is the gift that keeps on giving, and recently they added one of the most iconic platformers from the 90's: Earthworm Jim 2! Way back in the history of this humble video game podcast we revisited the original Earthworm Jim 1 and were surprised by how much we still enjoyed it. By almost all accounts, the sequel improves upon the formula in almost every way. But does that mean that this gem by Shiny Entertainment and Playmates Interactive still holds up in the modern day? Before we unearth the truth, we catch up on the other games we've been playing such as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Elden Ring, and... Katamari Damacy!? This week #Simptember continues as we dream of a time when The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare on the SNES and Sega Genesis was fresh in our mind. But is this wonderfully varied game still a dream worth remembering, or is it going to give us some sleepless nights? Before dozing off we give our impressions on Psychonauts 2, Death's Door, and Nine Perfect Strangers. Plus: We all know #MikeyDoesntFinish, but is Mikey the greatest video game starter of all time? Thirteen episodes in and we have our first repeat offender - Mario! We kicked off Medium Retro with Super Mario Bros. 3, a classic and one of the all-time great games, but we both agree that the Mario franchise reached its zenith with the release of Super Mario World. It’s the game that sold the Super Nintendo, a true system-seller and quite possibly the greatest game of the entire SNES/Genesis generation.Super Mario World is the perfect blend of tight platforming and whimsical exploration. It’s a world filled with kooky characters and memorable music. Playing through Super Mario World in 2020 feels just as good as it did 30 years in 1991 - the magic hasn’t worn off. It’s a polished and exceedingly fun gem of a game that everyone should play.Have you played Super Mario World? Let us know! We would love to hear about your gaming moments with this great game! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." Finally, Stallone fans celebrate! Courtesy of patron "Metal Dooley", we're taking a look at Judge Dredd, the 1995 SNES / Genesis game tie-in to the 1995 movie based on the comic book you probably aren't super familiar with! We weren't familiar with this one, so we all went in blind to see how this 16-bit licensed property game turned out. Also discussed, our thoughts on the Harv's Island June event on Animal Crossing, our favorite co-op gaming experiences, and thanks to our listener mail segment -- Breakfast Sandwiches. Probably our most compelling content in years, to be honest. Want to skip right to Judge Dredd? Skip to the 13 minute mark! Want to hear about Breakfast Sandwiches? That'd be 1:09 and 45 seconds. Please pull around to the second window. __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Virtual reality has turned into a pretty interesting space in the last few years. There are finally proper good games coming out for VR systems, VR training is working its way into various industries, and VR cinema/theatre is slowly starting to look more like a thing. And then there's Virtual Bart, the 1994 SNES/Genesis game that showed us the true potential for VR - it could be used to turn little Barty boy into a pigman. Join us for another installment of Control Pods in the Key of Springfield, where we dig into the magic of VR, reminisce about playing this horror show of a game as kids, and get very worked up about how great 'Tetris Effect' is. In this one, Eddie and I talk Vox Lux, Star Wars, Wrasslin, Frank Zappa, SNES/Genesis, Marvel and we rank our top 10 Xmas songs. Enjoy!
A listener request from Kyle VonKubik (see more below), this episode we definitely bit off more than we could chew, covering 2 completely different RPGs on the same source material, the pen and paper FASA RPG, Shadowrun. Do either of these versions do the cyberpunk classic justice, and what makes them different? We try to cover a lot in this hour+, and it probably got a little messy. Kyle VonKubik is also doing a Kickstarter for an amazing t-shirt design, Arkado Returns, which ends September 12th, and at the time this was posting is already over halfway there! It's a pretty rad set of designs based on iconic arcade classics including QBert, Frogger, Pac-Land, KLAX, and loads more. Check it out here, and consider backing it-- We did! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946048492/arkado-returns-vintage-arcade-inspired-limited-edi Want to skip hearing about non-retro games we've been playing? "What could PAWSsibly go wrong?" Bubsy asks you that question at the start of his first game, and we take some time to really take a deep look at not only Bubsy, but the sequels to determine the answer to that question. We also answer a listener question, about admitting when you may have been wrong about not liking a game. Next episode we celebrate the release of The Last Jedi with a look at a much younger Luke and his passage off Tatooine with the classic SNES trilogy of Star Wars games.

Find out which version we think is the best and why.TV talk brings us to the finale of Channel Zero: No End House, The Walking Dead, and the strange dreams that Rick and Morty have given us.
That's right, we went there, we went old school and borrowed a pretty popular saying during the SNES/Genesis era! And, in many ways, it was true. Sega had a better console, faster characters, in many ways more interesting games, yet....Sega didn't have what was most important, nearly as many sales/fans as the SNES!
This week! Get your capes and cowls ready 'cuz we're talking Arkham City (non-spoilery). And after that we take a quick tour into the disappointing Ratchet & Clank All 4 One.
