We are at the beginning of "spooky season," and while this isn't (yet) our Halloween episode, October is a fine time to shine a spotlight on composer Michiru Yamane, known in our parts for her excellent work on the Castlevania and Suikoden series. This is our most revealing episode yet; focused on answering many burning questions. Has Symphony of the Night become overrated over the years or is it still as impressive - or "crazy" - as it was nearly 30 years ago? Is the soundtrack weird or perfect? Who is "The SotN Guy"? How hot is Alucard? And maybe most importantly: why does it sound like this down here?

Alors que retenir de Symphony of the Night? Happy birthday, SOTN! We're back to close off our very short Metroidvania season with what we both believe to be the superior of the 'progenitor' titles in the genre. We discuss the game's strongest points, the story, the enemies, the inverted castle (spoiler?) and how disappointing the PS4 remake is (typical Konami, amirite?) among many other absolutely definitely fascinating topics. Because we're quite prone to random nonsense, we also talk about vampire movies, Bram Stoker's Dracula, the Jimmy Savile Netflix documentary, Mindhunter and serial killer museums, learning that Micro Machines and its sequel both actually suck, Keio Flying Squadron for Mega-CD being "weird Japanese shit," and we also have a letter from a listener that's absolutely nothing to do with video games at all. Then again, what is a podcast? A miserable little pile of banter. But enough talk, press play and... hear us talk at you!
The Lads are back to revisit one of the greatest games of all time: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Tam and Zach are long-time of the game, but Lucy and Jake have never played it. Here are their thoughts. Next time be sure to catch the lads LIVE at https://www.twitch.tv/ladsontourcrew!
This week marks 25 years since the release of not only one of the greatest games of all time, but a game that helped shape and define an entire genre - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. This week, Andy is joined by his Virtual Theater podcast co-host Gooey Fame to talk about the many triumphs and innovations of Symphony of the Night. Everything, from the incredibly diverse selection of music, to the incredible pixels and art style, to the diverse areas of the castle, to the way the almost every enemy is rooted in some kind of folklore or legend, is up for discussion, and of course, we talk about how Symphony of the Night introduced the "Vania" part of Metroidvania by including more RPG elements, stats, weapons, and improvements on Super Metroid's map and item exploration. We talk and reminisce for a while about one of the greatest games of all time, so if you've never played (or haven't played in a while!) Symphony of the Night, do yourself a favor and fire it up, since this timeless adventure is still as good today as it was 25 years ago. This month the guys head back to 1997 to discuss the Psone masterpiece Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the birth of the term Metroidvania. Alucard's return to Dracula's castle shaped a genre and formed the blueprints for future installments in the already popular series. Friend of the site and avid composer Ed Baquet joins in on the discussion this week.

Alon, Danny and Teddy play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It was like running a marathon and then running the same course in reverse. Was it fun? Sort of. We're glad we did it. SotN is definitely smarter than it looks at first blush. It's dripping with style and the soundtrack is bananas. There was a lot that didn't age well, but that's okay. Your racist grandma still has some redeeming qualities. What we really loved was the mastery of the space and navigation of Dracula's castle -- and it's our castle now...father. In episode one of Attack the Backlog, Marc visits a vast and varied castle for the (kind of) first time in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, a little game where you play as Alucard, son of Dracula, who awakens from what was supposed to be an eternal slumber because the forces of evil are at it once again in Dracula's castle and who better than the son of Dracula to save the day. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night originally came out on PlayStation 1 in 2007 and has since been ported to numerous platforms, including Xbox 360 (it is backward compatible on Xbox One), PlayStation 3, PSP, and, in just under a month's time, PlayStation 4. Anyway, something-something about damn time and an excuse to rhyme, cheers and enjoy the show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks, and, if you're feeling extra generous, you can become a patron, donate a little something-something, or subscribe to show your support for the site, podcast(s), and all the ridiculous jazz we make over here at Pixelated Sausage.
