He's Crude, He's Crass, He's Family: An Uncle Buck Deep DiveWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell, along with special guest Heath Wilcock, as they make themselves at home with John Hughes' 1989 comedy Uncle Buck. In this lovable exploration of family dynamics, the trio discusses how John Candy's portrayal of the slovenly bachelor turned temporary guardian perfectly captures the heart of what makes this film a timeless classic—even when he's threatening to show up to school in his bathrobe. The hosts dive deep into what makes Buck Russell such a magical character, from his giant pancakes the size of trash can lids to his absurdist approach to parenting ("I have a friend in the crime tech lab"). They explore how the film balances John Hughes' signature blend of sincere character moments with cartoonish comedy, discussing everything from the iconic rapid-fire questioning scene with young Macaulay Culkin to Tia's remarkable character arc. Heath shares his lifelong love for the film, while Nathan reflects on rewatching it after 20 years, and Krissy relates to it with fresh eyes as a parent of a teenager. The conversation touches on how Uncle Buck directly inspired Hughes to write Home Alone, the film's surprisingly dark moments (kidnapping Bug, anyone?), and why John Candy remains irreplaceable in the role—despite studio interest in Tom Cruise.Additional Thoughts:The clap-on moment that lights up Buck's entire building exemplifies the film's magical realismJean Louisa Kelly's performance as Tia walks the perfect line between venomous and vulnerableThe film's blissfully short runtime keeps everything moving without feeling episodicMarcy Dahlgren-Frost remains one of cinema's strangest neighbor charactersBuck's laundry-in-the-microwave running gag never gets oldFinal Verdict: Heath gives it a perfect 10 giant pancakes with butter, praising the tight storytelling and character work. Nathan awards 7 pancakes, noting some episodic pacing in the middle but celebrating Hughes' cleverness and Candy's charm. Krissy serves up 9 pancakes, highlighting how well the film holds up for family viewing.Deep Cut Recommendations: Heath suggests The Haunted Hotel on Netflix for another lovable problematic uncle. Nathan offers Elf for seasonal viewing, plus Yojimbo for those seeking a samurai take on the catalyst character. Krissy rounds it out with A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole for comedy with a larger-than-life protagonist.Want to hear this episode early and ad-free? There's a part of the Texans' culture that may not be getting enough credit — the coaching — and ITL digs into whether that foundation could finally lead to the team doing something it hasn't done in years, before wrapping the hour with today's QOTD: What's an email or text you wish you had back? Seahawks vs. Rams is on tap tonight, and the crew breaks down who they've got in a pivotal matchup, reacts to off-the-field drama surrounding Puka Nacua, and welcomes former Texan N.D. Kalu for his weekly visit, offering insight on the Texans and the league, plus What's Popping in sports and entertainment. The debate continues with a discussion on who the Texans' most indispensable offensive player really is — and whether Lopez just changed some minds — followed by Lunch-Time Confessions involving a kid not in the Rocky Top spirit and a round of O.G. Buy or Sell asking if you're buying what folks around sports are selling. And finally, ITL debates whether a Jawhar Jordan and Nick Chubb duo can get the job done this Sunday before Figgy's Mixtape brings the chaos with a Home Alone fun fact involving Joe Pesci, Macaulay Culkin's diehard Rams breakdown, a rat issue at a local Houston Walmart, and more wild stories making the rounds.

Send us a textA John Hughes/Chris Columbus joint, Home Alone is the heartwarming tale of an upper-middle-class family who go to Paris and accidentally leave their youngest child behind like an extra carry-on they didn't feel like paying for. Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister—played by a pint-sized, eyebrow-acting Macaulay Culkin—responds to this minor hiccup by eating junk food, watching gangster movies, and turning his house into a suburban Saw trap for two burglars whose crime is mostly being too stupid to quit. Those burglars are Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, delivering what may be cinema's most sustained assault on human skulls outside of a cartoon. In a way, Home Alone is basically It's a Wonderful Life if George Bailey wished everyone away and immediately started committing war crimes against local criminals. While Catherine O'Hara panics her way across continents and John Heard quietly realizes he's a terrible father, Kevin learns that family matters… but also that you can permanently disable two grown men with household items. It's Christmas magic, but with more concussions and far fewer angels getting their wings.

Join Ian and Maggie for their episode on the more modern Christmas classic, Home Alone. Though less substantive that the forthcoming Holdovers episode (again apologies for our technical difficulties changing up our schedule), Home Alone proved to be an enjoyable watch.
The boys kick off the Christmas season right with Home Alone from 1990. In this 90's classic, the McCallisters miscounted their children before taking off to France leaving little Kevin behind. With only his wits, he must protect himself and his home form the Wet Bandits!Support the showCatch new episodes of the Where to Stick It Podcast every Tuesday and Thursday. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay are celebrating the Xxxmas season by ordering plain cheese pizzas and watching the Christmas classic, 'Home Alone.' Andy gets us into the festive spirit by recalling the time he and friends were sledding inside a house, and caused more destruction than Kevin McCallister setting boobie traps. Then the fellas talk about this holiday staple that features a child star-making performance from Macaulay Culkin, but is bolstered by incredible performances from jerks Joe Pesci (the same year as 'Goodfellas'), Daniel Stern, and 'After Hours' stars John Heard and Catherine O'Hara. The guys discuss the true sickening reasons behind Harry and Marv being so motivated to capture the helpless 8-year-old. Plus, they wonder if Kevin had any friends, and how hilarious it is to see his transformation in only a matter of days with his family gone. The mayhem in the movie may take longer to get to than you remember, but the mayhem in our episode starts straight from the beginning, ya filthy animals.
