Like so many of you, we are crushed over the shootings in Uvalde. Our babies! BABIES! It is difficult to imagine that loss. At the beginning of this episode, we talked about summer plans with our kids and laughed together as we often do. There are too many families who will struggle to do that. We are sick of this. This episode is a "state of the union" style episode, where we process what we see and how it's impacting us and what we can do about it. It is good to remember that we are not helpless and we are not hopeless. We need to hold ourselves and others accountable to voice our concerns to legislators and to organizations that are causing hurt and harm to communities. It's not too late to make phone calls. Find your local, state, and federal legislators here: www.usa.gov/elected-officials Remember that the vast majority of people in government positions actually want to help others. If your heart is heavy over the SBC report, or another issue we didn't mention, consider writing a letter to express your concern or setting up a meeting with someone who has the power to make change. We love a good rant (you know this) but we can't stop at rants. We need to take action. We're proud of you listeners and we love you. Thank you for making change where you are. You're powerful and we're rooting for you! Cursed?: What to do with the curses in Genesis 3 When Adam and Eve ate the fruit in the Garden of Eden, God laid down several curses. For the serpent, the woman, and the man. But what do we DO with these curses? Are we supposed to perpetuate the ideas behind them, or move away from them? What's this story teaching us, anyway? We also discuss the sad state of gun violence in the USA. We wish we had the answers. Taylor Schumann never expected “school shooting survivor” to be on her bio, but now gun control has become her deepest passion. In April 2013, Taylor went to work at the school that she would, hours later, become a gunshot victim, and she joins Lathan today to talk about that fateful spring morning, and how her perspective about…well…everything has changed since then. Taylor S. Schumann says she's always been a writer, but on a spring day in 2013 she became an activist, too. It was an otherwise ordinary afternoon at New River Community College in Christiansburg, Virginia, when a gunman's bullet tore through her left hand, and she became a victim of yet another mass shooting in America. In the split-second moment of the shooting, and the long work of healing and trauma recovery that followed, her beliefs about gun reform, “thoughts and prayers,” and the role of the church in our nation's relentless trend of gun violence were irreversibly altered. In this episode, Heather and Taylor discuss life in the aftermath of gun violence. Through her story, Taylor invites us to meet the suffering around us with our whole-hearted attention. I've come to pretty fundamentally believe that some things cannot (and should not) be discussed outside of personal experience. That might sound odd coming from someone with a relatively traditional education in western philosophy. But… here I am. One of the keenest examples of that is gun violence. The way I see it: despite the numbers, despite the mathematics, everything stops with the phrase “I lost a loved one.” Or “I almost died.”All that math and all those statistics only matter in light of the value of human life. And the value of human life is established in places outside of Mathematica and statistics; Places we call “emotional” or even “sentimental.” Taylor Schumann's accounting of gun violence is personal. And that, in my opinion, makes it powerful. Not because the story is dramatic or even culturally triggering. But because, as a matter of statistics fact, there are only so many people who have heard gun-shots near them and faced the actual reality that they might die at the end of a gun. Taylor Schumann has.And because she has, I believe her and think what she says matters. I think you will, too. Check it out.

On April 12, 2013 as Taylor Schumann was beginning her work day working at the New River Community College in Christiansburg, Virginia, a gunman walked in and shot her. She survived, but not without deep scars both physical and psychological. How does one recover from such a horrific event? What are the lessons of post-traumatic growth?
When our friend Taylor released her first book, she just knew we had to talk to her on the podcast. Taylor is bright and brave, and she trusts God with what is good and what is hard. We just know that her story of hope and healing will leave you encouraged. Taylor Schumann is a wife, a mom, an author, and an activist. She's the author of an incredible new book, When Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough: A Shooting Survivor's Journey Into the Realities of Gun Violence. In 2013, Taylor was injured in a shooting, and now, she's using that pain and trauma for the good of others and the glory of God. We cannot recommend this book enough - it's available now wherever books are sold. In this episode, we're talking about hearing stories that are different than your own and finding God in the growing. We pray this episode encourages you to listen to the stories you hear and to tell the stories that only you can tell. We pray that you would pray first, then take action — through advocacy, through asking questions, and through however God leads you to make a move. We pray you find hope in Taylor's mission and that you would know God better because of her words. God is mighty in you, sister.

Today's guest is Taylor Schumann. Taylor Schumann is an author and activist, writing our swords into plowshares, our apathy into action, and the space between us into common ground. Preorder her book today! Her book is called "When Thoughts are Prayers aren't Enough." A few words by Taylor. Since I can remember, I've been writing. Since I can remember, people have been telling me I could write, and thankfully somewhere along the way I started believing them. Writing has gotten me through a lot of seasons of life: my college days, engagement & marriage, and the aftermath of being wounded in and surviving a school shooting. These days I am taking care of toddler and trying to find space to write in the cracks of this new life. I've learned a lot the past few years. I've learned about trauma & grief. I've learned about the ways that the body stores trauma and memories and how PTSD and anxiety can take over a life. I've learned what it's like to walk in contradicting emotions— grateful to be alive, yet struggling with the pain of living; feeling hopeless, yet knowing new mercies come as surely as the sun. I have experienced deep suffering, the kind that makes you wonder how all those cracks you feel could ever possibly be glued back together again. And yet, through all of it, I have known the joy that is found in feeling God's guiding hand as you take one step after the one before it, trusting that you'll one day find healing and redemption. So I'd like to take you all on this walk with me, if you're up for it of course. We're going to talk about both the good things and the hard things and how they aren't mutually exclusive. We'll talk about things that may make us a little uncomfortable sometimes, but that's only because we're trying to grow. We'll go slow and steady and take some breaks here and there. Taylor Schumann didn't set out to become an activist, but after surviving a shooting on a college campus in Virginia, everything changed. Rebuilding her life again, she not only changed her own perspective about guns in America, but sought to help people better understand the issue and make changes to protect people. If you've ever had a "god and guns" conversation with family, or felt furious or frustrated after a mass shooting, or want to see the nuance between the black and white narrative of gun rights, this conversation is for you. First off some more information about Pastor Tim Stephens's arrest. Then talking about Christianity Today's Article about gun rights. They took part of Taylor Schumann's book, coming out later this year, about how she thinks that pro-gun christians are serving two masters. Jesus and our right to own a gun. It's slightly more biblical than the article I talked about last year.
Taylor Schumann is a survivor of gun violence and author of the book When Thoughts and Prayers Aren’t Enough: A Shooting Survivor’s Journey into the Realities of Gun Violence. Violent crime, including mass shootings, are way up. On average over 300 people are shot everyday in America. In 2013, one of them was Taylor Schumann. All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond
Listen in as Women in the Academy and Professions associate Caroline Triscik interviews author Taylor Schumann. “Thinking about things is good, praying about things is good, but those aren’t where we end. That’s where we start.” — Taylor Schumann We’ve all heard the phrase, “My thoughts and prayers are with [fill in the blank for the most recent community affected by gun violence].” It’s been spoken by leaders in our country and leaders in our churches time and again as we continue to wait for change. In her upcoming book from InterVarsity Press, When Thoughts and Prayers Aren’t Enough: A Shooting Survivor’s Journey into the Realities of Gun Violence, writer and activist Taylor Schumann invites us to consider how to have our thoughts and prayers be not the end, but the starting point for action as people called by God to love our neighbors. Candidly sharing about her own journey of surviving a shooting while working at a college in Christiansburg, Virginia, Taylor allows us to witness the story of how gun violence has impacted her life and faith. In our conversation in this podcast episode, she offers more of her experience toward healing and also encourages us to join her in working toward a cultural shift regarding our country’s relationship with guns. I am so grateful for my conversation with Taylor and pray that you’ll find it as meaningful and challenging as I did. For show notes or more information please visit our article at The Well. "I was already an extremely empathetic person, but this took it to a new level." Since writer and activist Taylor Schumann, author of forthcoming title ‘When Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough: A Shooting Survivor's Journey into the Realities of Gun Violence,' was shot as a social worker in 2013 during a school shooting, she's had to stand up for herself and others who find themselves victims of gun violence. Coming from conservative small-town Virginia, it wasn't easy to become an activist for gun reform—but for Schumann, it's all about her faith. "For me, being more like Jesus is opposing things that are not in line with his vision for us as people on earth—and I cannot picture Jesus walking on the earth carrying an AR-15 down the street." In this episode of the Disrupters, Taylor Schumann and Esau McCaulley discuss the continuing trauma, difficult church spaces, and racial tensions surrounding gun violence.
