When our friend Taylor released her first book, she just knew we had to talk to her on the podcast. Taylor is bright and brave, and she trusts God with what is good and what is hard. We just know that her story of hope and healing will leave you encouraged. Taylor Schumann is a wife, a mom, an author, and an activist. She's the author of an incredible new book, When Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough: A Shooting Survivor's Journey Into the Realities of Gun Violence. In 2013, Taylor was injured in a shooting, and now, she's using that pain and trauma for the good of others and the glory of God. We cannot recommend this book enough - it's available now wherever books are sold. In this episode, we're talking about hearing stories that are different than your own and finding God in the growing. We pray this episode encourages you to listen to the stories you hear and to tell the stories that only you can tell. We pray that you would pray first, then take action — through advocacy, through asking questions, and through however God leads you to make a move. We pray you find hope in Taylor's mission and that you would know God better because of her words. God is mighty in you, sister.

Today's guest is Taylor Schumann. Taylor Schumann is an author and activist, writing our swords into plowshares, our apathy into action, and the space between us into common ground. Preorder her book today! Her book is called "When Thoughts are Prayers aren't Enough." A few words by Taylor. Since I can remember, I've been writing. Since I can remember, people have been telling me I could write, and thankfully somewhere along the way I started believing them. Writing has gotten me through a lot of seasons of life: my college days, engagement & marriage, and the aftermath of being wounded in and surviving a school shooting. These days I am taking care of toddler and trying to find space to write in the cracks of this new life. I've learned a lot the past few years. I've learned about trauma & grief. I've learned about the ways that the body stores trauma and memories and how PTSD and anxiety can take over a life. I've learned what it's like to walk in contradicting emotions— grateful to be alive, yet struggling with the pain of living; feeling hopeless, yet knowing new mercies come as surely as the sun. I have experienced deep suffering, the kind that makes you wonder how all those cracks you feel could ever possibly be glued back together again. And yet, through all of it, I have known the joy that is found in feeling God's guiding hand as you take one step after the one before it, trusting that you'll one day find healing and redemption. So I'd like to take you all on this walk with me, if you're up for it of course. We're going to talk about both the good things and the hard things and how they aren't mutually exclusive. We'll talk about things that may make us a little uncomfortable sometimes, but that's only because we're trying to grow. We'll go slow and steady and take some breaks here and there. Don't worry about catching up, I'll meet you where you are - Taylor The Winter Faith Podcast creates conversations on God, grief, and emotional growth. Birthed by Andrew Frazier in 2017. Listen in as Women in the Academy and Professions associate Caroline Triscik interviews author Taylor Schumann. “Thinking about things is good, praying about things is good, but those aren’t where we end. That’s where we start.” — Taylor Schumann We’ve all heard the phrase, “My thoughts and prayers are with [fill in the blank for the most recent community affected by gun violence].” It’s been spoken by leaders in our country and leaders in our churches time and again as we continue to wait for change. In her upcoming book from InterVarsity Press, When Thoughts and Prayers Aren’t Enough: A Shooting Survivor’s Journey into the Realities of Gun Violence, writer and activist Taylor Schumann invites us to consider how to have our thoughts and prayers be not the end, but the starting point for action as people called by God to love our neighbors. Candidly sharing about her own journey of surviving a shooting while working at a college in Christiansburg, Virginia, Taylor allows us to witness the story of how gun violence has impacted her life and faith. In our conversation in this podcast episode, she offers more of her experience toward healing and also encourages us to join her in working toward a cultural shift regarding our country’s relationship with guns. I am so grateful for my conversation with Taylor and pray that you’ll find it as meaningful and challenging as I did. For show notes or more information please visit our article at The Well. "I was already an extremely empathetic person, but this took it to a new level." Since writer and activist Taylor Schumann, author of forthcoming title ‘When Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough: A Shooting Survivor's Journey into the Realities of Gun Violence,' was shot as a social worker in 2013 during a school shooting, she's had to stand up for herself and others who find themselves victims of gun violence. Coming from conservative small-town Virginia, it wasn't easy to become an activist for gun reform—but for Schumann, it's all about her faith. "For me, being more like Jesus is opposing things that are not in line with his vision for us as people on earth—and I cannot picture Jesus walking on the earth carrying an AR-15 down the street." In this episode of the Disrupters, Taylor Schumann and Esau McCaulley discuss the continuing trauma, difficult church spaces, and racial tensions surrounding gun violence.
