Description: Today's guest, Shannon Watts, has come to be known as a formidable force in the world. As the founder of Moms Demand Action, the largest grassroots movement against gun violence formed after the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy in 2012, her activism has mobilized millions of moms to successfully pass over 500 gun safety laws. As Amy poignantly stated, Shannon's work “has legitimately made a tangible impact on the safety of my kids in their classrooms”, demonstrating the profound significance of Shannon's contributions. Watts has since shifted her time and attention to empowering women, whom she credits as the real changemakers in any movement. She has founded the Firestarter School, a platform designed to help women reclaim their power and has a forthcoming book, Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, releasing in the summer of 2025, which explores the necessary elements needed to ignite a fire in your life and pursue your passion and purpose. Thought-provoking Quotes: When you get involved in something like activism, it helps you realize that you have all of this untapped power. And it does give you the audacity to become a firestarter, to prioritize your desires over your obligations. – Shannon Watts Right out of college, I married my college sweetheart at 23-years-old. By the time I was 29, I had three children. I have a job I don't love. By my mid-thirties, I realized, this is not the person I would have chosen to be. I was having a difficult time acknowledging that I was living a life that was not true to me. – Shannon Watts So many women keep collecting new fuel, acquiring new skills, waiting for the other pieces to come together. And we're prepared when the opportunity presents itself. – Amy Hardin Society shoulders women with so many burdens so she doesn't have room to explore her desires. If you're going to claim space, raise your voice, you are going to get blowback. The direct proportion of how much you can grow your fire corresponds to how much blowback you're willing to withstand. – Shannon Watts Remind yourself of your wins everyday, whether they're your wins or wins for what you want to see in the world. Give yourself hope and affirmation. – Shannon Watts Fighting for your safety and your rights is a form of self-care and a form of protection for other people. – Shannon Watts Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Camino Made (B.T. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Mehdi Hasan, founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief of the new media company Zeteo, to discuss the biggest stories of the week and the newest Zeteo documentary entitled "Israel's Reel Extremism". Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matt Strackbein, better known as The Letterhack, and friend of the show Harvey Kaye, to discuss the comic strip they've collaborated on entitled The 'New Economic Bill of Rights' Comic Strip: A Vision for 2024 and Beyond, available on Common Dreams. First, they run through updates on Harris' widening path to victory, her economic agenda, Israeli settler rampages in the West Bank, Trump's campaign, Latin American leaders' call for Venezuela to rerun elections, Eric Adams' corruption, JD Vance's unfavorability, ceasefire talks, and polio in Gaza, also parsing through the reality behind Trump's attempt to refute his relationship to Project 2025. Mehdi Hasan then joins, diving right into Zeteo's recent work with Basement Films documenting the on-the-ground reality of the Israeli military's proud inhumanity as they carry out an ethnic cleansing in Gaza, and tackling the US political establishment's active refusal to acknowledge this, obscuring their support for this genocide in abstract ideas of “shared values” and “self-defense,” despite the monstrosities that permeate the public consciousness every day. Expanding on this, Hasan, Sam, and Emma watch Miriam Edelson's most recent exultation of Donald Trump's Zionism, looking at how the pro-Israel lobby, much like Oil and Gas executives and the Gun Lobby, bought their way to the forefront of his agenda, before touching on the developing conversation around a ceasefire vs. an arms embargo vs. conditioned, aid, and unpack the potential quagmire of Biden's commitment to Zionist imperial expansion and how it may effect the candidacy of Kamala Harris. Wrapping up, Mehdi, Sam, and Emma bask in the victory of Biden's dropout, assess the still-precarious state of the 2024 election, and discuss what the Walz pick means for Harris' candidacy. Matt Strackbein and Harvey Kaye then join, diving right into the background of the ‘old' Economic Bill of Rights, a New Deal agenda by FDR to bring the old Bill of Rights into a new era, and how this agenda, despite not succeeding, influenced the strategy and agenda of the Democratic Party over the following decades. Stepping into the modern era, Strackbein and Kaye explore the project of making Kaye's work into a comic, the development of Letterhack's relationship with Kaye (among other classic MR guests), the future of their work together, and where we can find it! And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma let Trump entertain them for a bit as they watch him rant about how immigrants get 110% of new jobs, forewarn of the threat of Kamala Harris' communisms, and put down wounded veterans in favor of his Zionist mega-donor. Elephant Graveyard puts Joe Rogan's new master-baiting special in the dirt, and Nancy Mace misunderstands what it means to take part in a racism panel, plus, your IMs! When you see a need, what do you do? Do you jump in and try to solve the problem? Or do you think about it for a while and workshop all the options and scenarios in your head before deciding whether to take action or not? Both ways can be valid, needed, and valuable. And both have their pitfalls. When we jump in to solve a need or problem, we can end up on a path to a crash course in humble pie and hard learnings on the go that can often do harm to others. Yet thoughtful consideration can often lead to failing to take action and falling into complacency. Or even worse, you tap out all together because you feel like your voice, your vote, your time, or your resources will not make a difference. But we can't stop caring or tap out. The stakes are too high.My guest today challenges this complacency–especially right now when so much is at stake here in the United States. Are you ready to challenge long-held beliefs? Brace yourself as we take a hard look at the deeply ingrained myths of gun violence, with Devin Hughes, the founder and president of GVPedia, a nonprofit that specializes in gun violence research. Together we unpack and challenge the notion that defensive gun use is widespread and beneficial to society, trace back the origins of the myth "an armed society is a polite society" to the science fiction from which it came, and we dissect the inherent lethality of guns and the dangers of using this flawed narrative to shape public opinion and policy. This week we revisit our interview with Shannon Watts, the founder and a full-time volunteer with the nation's largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence, Moms Demand Action. We looked at the major career events in Shannon's life, starting from the fateful day, December 14th, 2012 when the heartbreaking and tragic school shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Shannon was moved to reach out via a small Facebook post to other moms who were also outraged by the tragedy and the rest is history. With nearly 10 million supporters and a chapter in every state, Moms Demand Action and its partner, Everytown for Gun Safety, have stopped the NRA's priority legislation in statehouses roughly 90% of the time, and passed hundreds of gun safety laws across the country, changed corporate policies and educated Americans about secure gun storage. This grassroots movement helped break through the logjam in Congress and pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first gun safety bill in 26 years. Shannon is also active in recruiting and training women to run for office at all levels of the political spectrum. She was named one of Glamour's 2022 Women of the Year and her book, Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World, was released in May of 2019. Shannon's story reminds us that one person can make a huge difference in tackling what seems like insurmountable problems. Tell everyone if they want to make their voices heard about gun safety to text 64433 or go to the Moms Demand Action website (momsdemandaction.org) for ways to get in touch with your representatives. #momsdemandaction #shannonwatts #astrologyreading #astrologypodcast #careerpodcast #chartyourcareer #everytownforgunsafety

Former ESPN commentator Keith Olbermann responded to Monday's Michigan State University attack by urging blue states to declare “economic civil war” on the red states where gun companies and Republican Party thrive. Olbermann complained about what he sees as the state of affairs, tweeting these words, “We are owned by guns. “We are OWNED by guns. Only one thing will change that. We must have Economic Civil War. Blue States must financially starve the Red States, the Gun Lobby, the GOP, the Death Lobby, and the crooked judiciary into submission.” Blue states declaring civil war on red states over guns? EPISODE 134: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: We are owned by guns, and our only way out is Economic Civil War. Why does this supposedly sophisticated nation abide the ritual sacrifice of our children to insane gun owners? Because it makes other people millions of dollars. And when we cross a milestone where one of the Michigan State student-survivors is also a Sandy Hook survivor and at least three of them are also Oxford High student-survivors, we must attack the Gun Lobby, the Death Lobby, the Republican Death Party, and the Red States that harbor these terrorists with the only weapon they fear: Money. The Blue States keep the Red Ones from going bankrupt tomorrow and starving by next week. Let's use it. We must force our Blue State governments to stop contributing money to the Federal Government unless the Red States meet our demands about guns, the disproportionate House and Senate that codifies it, and the bought-and-sold Supreme Court that protects it. The Red States survive on State-to-State Socialism and you know how they hate Socialism. And the constitutional basis for an Economic Civil War? Why, the 2nd Amendment. After all, we are trying to protect "the security of a free State," aren't we? The gun lobby has been working for decades to drown out reputable research on guns and gun violence by funding disinformation. Devin L. Hughes, the co-founder and president of GVPedia, a non-profit organization that provides access to the largest publicly available gun study database and actively fights against misinformation about gun violence, knows this better than anyone. This week, Devin joins JJ and Kelly to discuss the “firehose of falsehood” — how groups like the NRA have effectively used disinformation to flood the research landscape with inaccuracies to change the narrative and ultimately achieve success in the courts and legislatures — and the outsized impact that flood of disinformation continues to have. Devin also shares strategies for promoting truth in effort to prevent gun violence, as well as how to separate reality from disinformation. Heidi and Ellen had the absolute honor and privilege to interview Shannon Watts, the founder and a full-time volunteer with the nation's largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence, Moms Demand Action. Together, they looked at the major career events in Shannon's life, starting from the fateful day, December 14th, 2012 when the heartbreaking and tragic school shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas remind us that evil is alive and well. Why did a troubled eighteen year old enter an elementary school with assault weapons and open fire leaving 19 children and 2 adults dead? When tragedy strikes people are quick point their finger to God. They ask why a loving God would allow such terrible events to occur. In this episode of Finish Strong, Brian, Terry and Dan give a very thorough explanation as to why evil exists and how suffering can ultimately be turned into good. They also point out that justice delayed is not justice denied.Exile's ReturnLearning Resources Available: http://exilesreturn.blogListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyFearless Faith Websiteffaith.orgTo leave a review - Open Finish Strong on the Apple Podcast app and scroll down until you see "Ratings & Reviews". The gun lobby only wants the best for their biases. They don't want their gun taken away so they're going to cheer on, even the most outrageous of bills. Politicians are actually thinking about militarizing schools and the amount of resources you need to do that is not even doable. Join Bill Stierle as he and Tom give their perspective on the tragic event that happened in Texas. Gun laws and policies need to change and it's up to the politics to do that. Exactly 17,199 deaths that have happened this year were through gun shootings. Something needs to change.Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! https://billstierle.com/podcast/

[00:30] Another Mass School Shooting (25 minutes)Yesterday morning at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, an 18-year-old man murdered 19 children and two adults. “I still don't really understand what motivates people to do something like this,” said Fox News host Tucker Carlson on his show last night. My father has often spoken about the cause of these mass murders. In August of 2019, he explained: “The cause of our violent and bloody crimes is that as a society we have rejected God's law!” [25:10] ‘The Gun Lobby' (29 minutes)In rapid response to yesterday's school shooting, Joe Biden and Barack Obama spoke and tweeted about the “gun lobby” and “common-sense gun laws.” Tucker Carlson noted that partisan politics are “the only thing that animates [Joe Biden].” Will stricter gun laws solve our school shootings?
